An exciting and helpful work on becoming a firefighter........1998-08-02
The author clearly presents the process one must go through to become a firefighter. She offers tips on passing the written, as well as physical, exams and is very encouraging throughout. What I also enjoyed were the one page statements made by firefighters themselves at the end of each chapter in THE INSIDE TRACK. Schools are listed as well as organizations to help finance an education in this field. Professional Associations are also provided at the end of the book. If you'd like a quick and thorough look into the world of the firefighter, this is a book for you.

A classic is a classic!.......2004-07-03
Richard Reti shows the evolution of chess by analyzing games from great players from the past. In doing so, he also provides the reader with basic ideas on how to handle the opening, approach the development of pieces and confidently enter the middlegame. The contrast between the hypermoderns and classicists is also of interest and, in my opinion, a landmark in chess is represented by this book.
The biographical notes are also interesting from the chess culture point of view. I love this book and consider worth having it in my personal library. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Because of the descriptive notation...
Grab this book if you can find it!.......2002-03-22
This is a chess book that every collector should own as part of their chess library. It is one of the all-time classics. It was published by Dover and runs 436 pages in Descriptive notation. (If this book was ever republished in algebraic notation I would rate it 7 stars!!).
It basically contains a sampling of master games from many of the greatest masters of all-time; Anderssen, Morphy, Steinitz, Tarrasch, Lasker, Schlechter, Pillsbury, Maroczy, Marshall, Rubenstein, Spielmann, Nimzowitsch, Vidmar, Tartakower, Capablanca, Bogoljubow, Alekhine, Grunfeld, Euwe, Saemisch, Colle, and Torre.
Each chapter focuses on a different master in the order described above. There is a biographical sketch of each master at the beginning of each chapter as well. It focuses on a particular masters achievements and some of the unique ideas and methods that master brought to the game.
There are a total of 70 very well annotated games.
This book is not only a great games collection, but a virtual textbook on how to play the game. It thoroughly discussed many different opening systems, middle game strategies, and endgame topics.
One thing I noticed was how many combinations originating from these games are used in so many tactics books such as 1001 winning chess combinations, or combination challenge. I have used those training books in the past - and now I know that they come from real games and who played them!
This book has become very hard to find. My advice is this - if you can find this book in a used book store somewhere, don't hesitate. Grab the book, pay for it and get out of there fast before someone else finds the book. You will not regret buying this book.
I rated it "only" 4 stars for a couple of reasons - 1)it is in descriptive notation (this book makes it worthwhile learning DN if you don't already know it) 2)Reti died before all of the chapters could be finished. Some of the later chapters in the book are not as thorough and interesting as the earlier ones. Some of the biographical details are left out.
Even with the limitations mentioned above, there are few chess books as fun and instructive. Based upon the level of annotations in this book, players rated between 1,100 - 1,600 USCF would probably benefit the most. Players outside of that rating range would still enjoy playing over the games, but would not gain as much insight from the notes.
Chess, for the love of it.......2001-08-06
This book is Reti's masterpiece and I consider it one of the finest chess books ever written. Reti died, in 1929 at the age of forty, just before its publication. In it he chronicles the development of chess with sketches of the game's greatest practicioners. In doing so, he analyzes some games played by these masters.
The analysis has imperfections by today's computer aided standards, but this is not primarily an instructional book. Rather it is a work of literature wherein a great mind shares his love of chess with beautiful prose.
Those seeking instruction of high quality from a contermporary of Reti might consider Grandmaster Aron Nimzovitch's "My System". It is entertaining and a classic on positional chess. And it is written in a lively and unique style.
Not bad for its time.......2000-05-04
This is a readable book, but serious players have to take theanalysis with a touch of salt. The book will give you some idea of thedevelopment of the game. Other treatments that do this are Reti's 'New Ideas in Chess' and Euwe and Nunn's 'Development of Chess Style'. 'Masters of the Chessboard' was published circa 1930 and the raison d'etre for its publication was Reti's adverse reaction to writings of one Gutenmayer. To give one example of Reti's suspect analysis take his annotation to the immortal game (Anderson - Kieseritsky,1851), published in 'New Ideas in Chess'. This has been carefully demolished in Hubner's article 'The Immortal Game' published in the American Chess Journal (No.3). 20 pages of detailed analysis reveal the truth of the game in a way broad generalizations cannot. 'Masters of the Chessboard' won't radically improve your strength if you're already over 1500 USCF. But to reiterate, it's areadable book and charts the development of some ideas in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century
Learn chess by watching theory develop.......1998-07-24
This is one of the most interesting training books on chess I've read. This books walks you through a history of chess theory from the mid 1850's to the late 1920's, teaching you the ideas while having you go through a selection of games explaining them.
Almost all of the games are fantastic and the ideas are timeless. Reti is probably the greatest chess annotator of all time. This makes for a truly great 2nd book on chess (about the level of "My System") for the desciplined reader. It can be too easy in the book however to miss subtle points that the games bring out, and since Reti died while writing it the book never reaches the climax. A strong recommendation for a classic

A look into the unique and insularly life of a musical giant........2006-07-06
Joseph Horowitz does a great job of collecting these interviews in order to preserve the ideas and feelings of the last great link we had to the high period of 19th century pianism. You get a good look at Arrau's unusual and rather sheltered life. Horowitz reveals both the simple and the complex in Arrau's nature. A natural born aristocrat, despite facing hard times in his early years, Arrau is quite simple as a man, but as a musician he is even more complex.
A very good and accessible read. I particularly enjoyed the interviews with artists such as Garrick Ohlsson and Daniel Barenboim, among others, at the end of the book.

This book is amazing. Arrau is my favorite pianist, but even for those who aren't yet converts this book is still fascinating for allowing us glimpses into a towering, fantastic musical mind, and his deep and well thought-out ideas on musical interpretation and piano technique. Indispensible.
A must-have for piano lovers.......2004-07-14
This book should be owned by all pianophiles. Claudio Arrau was one of the great recorded pianists of all time, even though you may not always agree with his interpretations. It's the same here: Even though you probably won't agree with everything he says about music and other pianists (I personally don't), these are great insights from a pianist whose brilliant career spanned over eight decades and who had personal contact with many musical giants at the turn of the last century. Joseph Horowitz has also done a superb job discussing most of Arrau's recordings and writing biographical notes about several phases of Arrau's life. My only complaint is that the discography that used to be in the first edition (entitled "Conversations with Arrau") is not included in this new edition.
One of the greatest books about one of the greatest pianists.......2001-05-24
This is a great book. (Note: It was previously available under the title "Conversations With Arrau.") It does not shoot over the heads of the average reader, but it doesn't dumb down its subject either. Horowitz spoke for hours upon hours with the great Claudio Arrau. What emerges is the portrait of a man devoid of irony or pretense. The biographical part is fascinating--we learn what living in Berlin during the 1920s was like, for example, and while it was harsh, it was also deeply spiritual and enriching for artistic types. The sections on interpretation are interesting conversations that I wish more authors would have with more artists. Next comes a chapter where Arrau speaks openly about psychoanalysis. Then there are sections where colleagues and friends talk about Arrau, revealing their insights of his character. (Colin Davis is particularly devoted.) Finally the author gives us a complete discography and discussion of selected recordings. A must-own for piano or Arrau fans, although I understand this latest version of the book inexplicably skips the discography. Look for a used copy under the previous title instead.
Arrau on Music and Performance a winner!.......2001-05-11
Claudio Arrau was a great child prodigy, and later had a long career as a performing pianist. This book deals in a sensitive way with both the man and his music. I found Arrau, the person, a compelling individual whose virtuosity was both a gift and a challenge. Joseph Horowitz does a superb job of blending narrative with question and answer sessions with Arrau himself. I EXPECTED a nice biography, and I got that. Beyond that, I got numerous invaluable tips as a pianist about playing individual composers and technique.

This a very unique book on a unique show. It is not the usual Ken Beck and Jim Clark quote book with quotes taken directly from the show or text describing the characters or episodes. The text briefly describes each season and the rest of the book is filled with photos and quotes from the actors (many bit players), writers, producers, etc. The quotes range from talking about certain actors or scenes to behind-the-scenes tidbits and general feelings about The Andy Griffith Show. It reads like a scrapbook. Many of the photos I have not seen in any other TAGS book. There are a lot of behind-the-scenes photos. Some of my favorites show the cameramen, lights, and equipment as scenes were being filmed. There is also a cool aerial shot of the set of the Forty Acres lot in Culver City that was used for downtown Mayberry (p. 44). I also like the photos of TAGS memorabilia (TV Guide and comic book covers). The photos start with early publicity and scene shots from the pilot episode on The Danny Thomas Show and go on through all 8 seasons of TAGS, ending with photos and quotes on the spin-offs Gomer Pyle USMC, Mayberry RFD, and the 1986 reunion Return to Mayberry. Not an exhaustive list, but you get the idea. The quotes are all very positive. No bitterness in Mayberry.
My only qualm about the book is the lack of coverage of one of my favorite, and greatly unappreciated, characters Warren Ferguson. No Jack Burns quotes, I guess that is understandable. But beneath one of only three photos of him is the sarcastic caption: "Andy hires Floyd's nephew Warren Ferguson as Mayberry's new deputy, `know what I mean, huh-huh-huh?' (Please don't get him or us started)." Not keeping with the Mayberry spirit, in my opinion. Oh well, you can't have it all, I guess. The book ends with a very useful episode guide that includes a synopsis of each episode (some even include some extra tidbits or trivia) and guest characters with cast credits. It is an excellent addition to any TAGS fan's collection.
A pretty fascinating book..........2001-09-03
Lots of good pictures and stories behind the filming of the show. If you are a fan of Andy Griffith, you can't go wrong with this book.

I've never seen such a great Mayberry book before!! It has many wonderful pictures, and tons of great history. I read this straight for around 3-4 hours, and it has great memories or the actors reminiscing... Ah, well, it's worth buying for the price, this book is worth it!! Very high quality.

I recently bought this book for my grandparents. It was such a joy to sit and watch them remember back on all the episodes they had watched. If you were a fan of the Andy Grifith show this is a must buy for you
Mayberry Memories.......2001-06-10
An excellent book and well put together. You will find amazing photographs of all the characters in the cast...and then some. One of the most interesting photos, in this book, is one of an ariel view of the Mayberry Town near Culver City, California. An actual town within a town.
I have read other books and also found them interesting with regard to the Andy Griffith show, but it was great to see all the pictures and read the personal comments of the stars and the people behind the scenes.
I believe that anyone , like myself, who really loved the show will enjoy this a great deal. Well done. This was one of my all time favorites shows and this book shows a lot of the people who made it such a great series.

One of the best guides I've used.......2007-03-10
I bought this game and guide over a year ago, but I love the game, and this guide is the perfect compliment to it. I've yet to find a single mistake in this guide; the maps are flawless, the pictures are exactly what you need to see; every level and subquest is included along with strategies for all. In short, this is probably the most complete and accurate guide I've used so far for any game. Of course, you can get free tips (and even some crude ASCII maps) on the internet, so I normally wouldn't even recommend buying a retail strategy guide. But this one is definitely a worthy investment; it's just so much nicer (and prettier) to have everything you need, in lavish detail, right there in one place. So if you love this game and plan on playing it for 100's of hours like I have, you should probably get this guide. If you're only a casual fan with a passing interest in the actual game, then yeah, you probably don't need it; but for me this is la creme de la creme of strategy guides. Nice job!
