Book Description
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been facing considerable economic challenges. Left behind by the industrial revolution, overly dependent on oil resources, and on the fringes of the globalization process, a number of MENA countries have embarked on structural reforms to overcome economic stagnation, mounting unemployment, and increasing poverty. At the same time, there is growing awareness worldwide that the knowledge revolution offers new opportunities for growth resulting from the availability of information and communication technologies and from the advent of a new form of global economic development rooted in the concept of the knowledge economy, which is based on the creation, acquisition, distribution, and use of knowledge.
This book, developed from papers prepared for a World Bank sponsored conference, assesses the challenges confronting the region's countries and analyzes their readiness for the knowledge economy based on a set of indicators. It provides quantitative analysis to help benchmark the countries against worldwide knowledge economy trends, identifies key implementation issues, and presents relevant policy experiences. The basic policy elements that underpin a strategy to prepare for a knowledge-based economy are discussed, including: the renovation of education systems, the creation of a climate conducive to innovation, and the development of an efficient telecommunications infrastructure as the foundation of a new era. The formulation of national visions and strategies is also discussed. Examples from the region and other parts of the world illustrate the chapters. A set of data that makes it possible to benchmark and position countries' readiness for the knowledge economy is presented in an appendix.

Customer Reviews:
Essential!!!.......2004-12-11
Jazz music in their creators' own words. A fine job by Shapiro and Hentoff. Hentoff tends to be opinionated, but here he's just a compiler.
Excellent Book!!!!.......2001-12-24
I first read this book at The University of Michigan over twenty years ago, and gave my copy away to a friend over 15 years ago, who...to my surprise (!)...was married to a drummer for a very famous Jazz musician mention in this book!,...and I now just ordered a copy for my library...and to read over... and over again....
Excellent "quotes" from some of the most influential players in original American music history!!!
A 'must have' for anyone seriously interested in the origins of Jazz, it roots, it's movement up the Missippi to Chicago...And it's told from the people who not only played it...but also lived it!
If you finished reading this review, then this book is probably for you!!!
A very good reed!
A Great history of American Music.......2000-08-11
This is a great book! It is the story of Jazz, as told by the men and women that made it. What more could you ask for! For the serious Jazz fan or for anyone interested in music history this book is a must. Why read what critics and journalist have to say when you can get it, 'straight from the horses' mouth'.
Jazz Pioneers Tell Their Own Story.......2000-03-25
This is a great introduction to Jazz History for anyone just becoming interested in the subject. Anyone who has been into jazz for some time who hasn't read "Hear Me Talkin' To Ya" yet is missing a real treat. This is full of facinating information, and is a great read.
The book is wonderfull and colorfull look at the origins and development of jazz music from New Orleans at the start of the 1900s to the start of BeBop in New York mid-century. As the full title states, this is "The Story of Jazz As Told By The Men [and Women] who Made It". This is a compilation of excerpts from interviews, letters, autobiographies, and articles with jazz musicians, both greats and less well known musicians who have good stories to tell. Louis Armstrong, Bunk Johnson, Sidney Bechet, Danny Barker, Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton, Mary Lou Williams, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Milt Hinton, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, and many others have their say.
Highly recomended!

Book Description
Eating on the run has a long history in America, but it was the automobile that created a whole new category of dining: "fast food." In the final volume of their "Gas, Food, Lodging" trilogy, John Jakle and Keith Sculle contemplate the origins, architecture, and commercial growth of fast food restaurants from White Castle to McDonald's.
Illustrated with 217 maps, postcards, photographs, and drawings, Fast Food makes clear that the story of these unpretentious restaurants is the story of modern American culture. The first roadside eateries popularized once-unfamiliar foods -- hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, milkshakes, burritos -- that are now basic to the American diet. By the 1950s, drive-ins and diners had become icons of rebellion where teenagers sought freedom from adult authority. Like the gas station and the motel, the roadside restaurant is an essential part of the modern American landscape -- where intentional sameness of design "welcomes" every interstate driver.
Customer Reviews:
As dry as a fast food hamburger.......2001-03-04
This could best be described as a detailed history of chain-restaurants (not just fast food). It opens with a history of 'quick-service' eating establishments in the US, taking the reader through the history of tea rooms, roadside stands, diners, and other more recent permutations. Most of the book is devoted to histories of chain-restaurant companies, which amount to something less than riveting reading. The authors have thoroughly researched the history of every restaurant chain in painstaking detail, but rarely are these written in a way that makes for a gripping story. An exception is the Indiana-based 'Snappy Service' chain (closed in 1983), which is described in a way that brings its entrepreneur to life. The last chapter describes the pattern of chain restaurants that evolved in Springfield, Illinois. The book is profusely illustrated with well over a hundred photos and dozens of maps. One glaring error appears in a series of five maps (pp. 154-157) analyzing McDonald's domination of rival chains, in which the ratio of McDonald's to competitors was inverted.
An Easy Read.......2000-07-14
I liked it so much I brought a copy for a friend of mine. It tells you EVERYTHING you could ever want to know anout fast food in America.
The book will provide you with more fast food trivia than even the nerdiest person in the world would ever want to hear.
A great coffee table book.
Authoritative, but not light reading.......2000-05-12
I enjoyed this book much more than the previous reviewer, but he has a point. FAST FOOD, like the other titles in the "Road and American Culture" series, should not be confused with the typical book on "roadside Americana": it's not a lighthearted, heavily illustrated volume designed to evoke nostalgic memories. If that's what you want, search for titles written by John Margolies or Michael Karl Witzel, or published by Chronicle Books.
This is a serious examination of casual dining in America, from the lunch wagons which once served urban laborers through the chains which now cluster near every exit along the Interstate. Taken on its own terms, the book is a success, assembling more information (well-annotated, with an excellent bibliography) than any previous title on the topic. Just be sure you know what you're getting into!
unreadable.......2000-02-06
What could be more entertaining than a book about fast-food? What could be more fun than reading the history of Wendy's and Long john Silver, of hamburgers and hotdogs? Unfortunately the writers of 'Fast food' have a very bad case of sociologist's jargon. Most of the book is as exciting and as readable as a management study and many a paragraph goes beyond the comprehension of this reader, even though he graduated in literature. Moreover the writers do not bother to hide their cultured disdain for the food they write about. So notwithstanding the many interesting facts and observations in this book, in the end there is very little to enjoy.

A Vivid and Authentic Account of Autism.......2007-08-19
Jim McDonnell was actually one of my mother's favorite professors at Carleton, when she attended in the early 70s. This connection is probably why my family owns a copy of News from the Border. Now I am glad that I found this book and had the opportunity to read it.
Coincidentally, I too was diagnosed with high-functioning autism. After reading Jane McDonnell's memoir, I was reminded of many of my own childhood experiences and struggles. From speech difficulties to obsessive-compulsiveness, there are certainly some similarities between Paul and I. Also, I really related to Paul's Afterward, particularly some of his worries about the external world and the future.
Perhaps more interestingly, Jane described some very stark differences between Paul's childhood and mine. To begin with, Paul was trapped in a "borderland," because both psychology and pedagogy failed to appropriately define autism. I was given very aggressive (and effective) treatment for Autism at an early age. Although Paul is extremely bright and probably born with a less severe form of autism than myself, the lack of early developmental intervention caused him to struggle much more during adolescence. In fact, I am currently attending Carleton College, while Paul had substantial difficulties with work even in high school. Furthermore, Paul's family was dysfunctional and was a significant source of distress for Paul. If I had been in the same situation as Paul, I probably would not have been able to cope with the complex social interactions (issues) of the family.
Overall, News from the Border is a vivid and authentic account of a mother's relationship with her autistic son. I think that Jane not only used excellent prose, but wrote a narrative that is honest and sufficiently self-critical (she DOES mention that alcoholism and drug use may have contributed to Paul and Kate's disabilities). In my opinion, the book is a bit better at documenting the dynamics of a (dysfunctional) family that includes an autistic child, rather than the effects of autism itself. For a book that is simply about autism, I would recommend Thinking in Pictures or Send in the Idiots, which are both written by actual autistics. I would also caution people to remember that much has changed in the psychiatric community since the publishing of this book. Still, I strongly recommend News from the Border and dearly wish that it was put back into print.
Good for toilet paper........2002-08-29
I'm a young adult with Aspergers Syndrome and I find it silly how Kate McDonnel gives herself so much credit for helping Paul succede when during his most critical years of development she was a depressed drunk. Curious how she never mentions her possibly drinking during pregnancy to contributing to Paul's Autism and Kate's Cerebral Paulsey. If that wasn't bad enough she and her husband due to their cultural/gender prejudices encourage Kate to be confident, secure and independent while making Paul needy and dependent by forcing him to go to the "special kids camp" and making him feel even worse. The psycholigists at the hospital were right to see Paul as passive agressive because later on in a relationship he threatened to kill himself if his girlfriend left him. This is classic P/A behavior, overprotective, overbearing mothers combined with abusive often absent fathers. Right now I'm very active in what I call the "Alpha" community, Alpha meaning (autistic, asperger, add/adhd). That one lady was right how the only reason Paul got so far was due to himself and his friend Allen. I myself came from a dysfunctional family but I overcame it. What Jane and Paul McDonnel have done to Paul is child abuse of a severe magnitude, if anyone out there wants to learn more about High Functioning Autism or Aspergers, please do not buy this book and continue lining this sick, pathological couple's wallets.
Amazing.......2001-12-11
I read this book for the first time in a psychology class I was taking. When my teacher first handed me the book, I looked at it a few times before realizing this was written by one of my childhood friends mom's. At the time, I was very unaware of the situation with Paul. I was in awe of Jane and her ability to write this book. This had to have been a very hard thing for her to do.
After reading this book, I had a better understanding of Paul, as well as a much better understanding of autism.
Amazing.......2001-12-11
I read this book for the first time in a psychology class I was taking. When my teacher first handed me the book, I looked at the cover a few times before realizing that this book was written by one of my childhood friends moms. I grew up around this family and at the time I was very unaware of what the situation was with Paul. I was incredibly impressed with Jane's ability to write this book. I know this had to be a very hard thing for her to start.
After reading this book, not only did I understand Paul's situation, but I had a great understanding of autism.
The best book on Autism I've read........2001-11-05
I was loaned a copy of this book along with dozens of other books once my son was diagnosed. I put this book at the bottom of the heap because I was sure I would "cure" him with dietary interventions etc. I was sure I didn't want to be depressed by what I was sure would be a sorrowful experience.
After a few months I was going through my desk and saw the book, felt ready to read it - McDonnell's book has eased my fears. My experiences with my son mirror some of hers - but mostly she gave me a human view or perhaps a humane view of autism.
I feel that after reading her book and Paul's afterword that I am more patient and can understand more of what it is like to be in my son's mind. I hope Paul continues to do well in life - I enjoyed being able to have a glimpse into his life.
The writing itself is wonderful prose - to be expected from an English professor I suppose - describes a real life situation without promising a cure. As a parent of a "High functioning" son, I found it to be a terrific escape from all the promises, and pressure in most books out there.
Heart warming, sensitive and honest. Get a hold of a copy! You will not regret it.
