Lab Manual to Accompany Electronics for Computer Technology
ASIN: 0827353405 |
Book Description
This book introduces basic electronics and the behavior of passive components, circuit analysis and systematic troubleshooting. The analytical methods used are strongly based on Ohm's and Kirchoff's Laws. Mathematics are used for analysis, but only after a solid, intuitive understanding of circuit or device operation has been established. With a heavy emphasis on critical thinking over rote memorization, and the coverage of state of the art technology, this book truly prepares readers to use and apply the knowledge they acquire.
Customer Reviews:
Good only for beginners.......2006-03-11
This book is in a very detailed form explaining in simple english with colourful diagrams. It deals with resistors, capacitors and inductors and the way they are connected to form RC,RL and RLC circuits. It also throws some light on kirchoff's current and voltage law, but doesnt deal anything with network theorems which help you in simplifying the circuit. This book is basically for beginners and not for someone who is looking indepth knowledge on circuit theory.

Thorough and Understandable.......2003-02-22
A very readable book; ideal for learning elementary electronics either in school or on one's own. This is a text for use in the first course of an Electronics Technician program. It is well-written and has very few errors. Hazen succeeds in making things understandable on an intuitive level (where other authors, e.g. Floyd, seem to assume a year of college physics for the background understanding of more abstract concepts). The pub date of 1990 should not put you off, because the fundamentals really have not changed. What has changed in books which have gone through more regular updating are the graphics, which are fancier, and the prices, which are proportionately higher (funny how the same hard to follow explanations are repeated from edition to edition by other authors -- a weakness not improved by pretty graphics). This book also comes in at just under 650 total pages (supplementary material and index are paginated seperately) where a competing book weighs (heavily) in at 1008 total. Which one would you rather carry around for a year? Few 2 year tech programs will use all of the material in the 1kp volume. This book can help open the doors to something more advanced, such as the excellent _The Art of Electronics_ by Horowitz and Hill.
Outstanding DC/AC text for Vocational and Technical Schools!.......1996-05-25
Fundamentals of DC and AC Circuits - Hazen has done it again with a winning book targeted exactly right for the Vocational and Technical School markets. This book is the very definition of adjectives such as readable, understandable, practical, applied, and complete. Many students say this is one of the few textbooks they were able to read and actually understand. All parts of the book and available ancillaries were written by Hazen, providing the all-important continuity that students need and expect. This is a definite buy for anyone wanting to learn about electricity, either on their own or in a formal classroom

Not bad, but not great.......2007-07-28
I loved Leah Rewolinski's send-up of the Star Trek universe when I was in high school. I recently came across the books again and tried re-reading them for the first time in over a decade. Still kinda funny, but it seems clear in retrospect this first book was adapted from a failed screenplay -- there are a plethora of sight gags and lines that would be funny visually, but not so much in a book. It's interesting mainly as a curiosity for real Trek fans. If you find it cheap at a used book sale it'd be worth giving a look.
Fantastic fun for Trekies.......2006-05-29
I loved reading this book... all 5 or 6 times i've re-read it over the years. I get something new out of it each time as i have gotten older as well as gotten to be a bigger Trekie.... however, i can also see where some people who are not Star Trek fans would miss a lot of it and not get it
A Laugh Riot.......2005-10-06
Many of my fellow Trekkies take our hobby far, far too seriously. We forget that Star Trek is for fun.
This lightens you up with 100% non-malicious giggles.
If you love any or all of the Star Trek series, buy this.
If someone you love loves Star Trek too well, give them this as a gift.
For Trekkies with a sense of humor.......2003-10-16
I borrowed this book from a friend, and was hooked! I'm buying the rest, I've read the first and second, and I really get into this series. You have to like parodies and be open minded to get into this sort of thing, but this new twist on an old classic can really take you places!
Quick read, much laughter.......2002-06-19
For Trekkies who don't get offended at the mocking of their favourite show easily - this book is for you. Managing to poke fun at absolutely everything in the Star Trek universe, this book isn't exactly fine literature, but will make you laugh as Smirk and Jean-Lucy Ricardo collide in an attempt to handle the Cellulites. It's the first in a series of Star Wreck books, all as completely unserious and insane as this one.

A superlative collection, reflecting the same wide variety of songs that you d hear at any Doc Watson concert. In addition to words, melody, and chord names, more than half the book is filled with guitar transcriptions and standard notation.

Book Description
Sound Identities offers sustained reflection on the sociocultural implications of youth consumption of popular music such as rap, heavy metal, calypso, and salsa. In Sound Identities, contributors pursue these themes throughout: across the terrains of the American nation; across the global dynamics of postcolonial music history; and ultimately back into the micropolitics of the pedagogy of musical affect in the classroom. Collectively the authors insist that we see music as operating within the context of a plurality of techno, ideo, ethno, finance, and media scapes--flows and logics of globalization that fragment, rework, and reintegrate human experience in the progress of music within the circuits of production, distribution, and consumption (Appadurai, 1996). The eighteen essays in this volume foreground a wide array of theoretical and empirical research that looks at the dynamic role that music plays at the level of the everyday lives of today's school youth. Sound Identities is divided into four sections: "Music in the Nation," "Music in the Postcolony", "Music in the Contested Metropolis", and "The Pedagogy of the Musical Affect."

Superfluous; Not Enough Info on the Cast/Series.......2003-03-23
"Twin Peaks: Access Guide to the Town" opens with a puzzling, rather humorous letter from Mayor Milford (isn't he always?), which gives the pace to the rest of this tongue-in-cheek, pseudo-guide of Twin Peaks, Washington. There is some fun stuff in here, like mini bios and mug shots of the more relevant cast members (but why did the waitress from the Great Northern get such a large bio?), town maps, and even the jukebox selections at the Double R Diner, plus some recipes for any Twin Peaker's diet: cherry pie, coffee, and doughnuts.
However, this book is absolutely brimming with useless facts, like an excerpt from Andrew Packard's will, a ten-page section on Packard Sawmill (oh, thrills), Washington State history, first explorers, Native American tribes, flora, fauna, geology, weather, and a bizarre advertisement for Tim and Tom's Taxi-dermy (one part blind taxi driver; one part taxidermist). Even if you condensed the more important stuff, it would never reach the current 112 pages, but less than 1/4 of that, if that much.
I wouldn't consider this book necessary reading, even if you are a Twin Peaks fan; but if you love to collect Twin Peaks stuff (like I do), then you might consider buying this book. Even so, Twin Peaks fans looking for info on the series will more than likely be disappointed, because this book reads more like a boring tourist guide or junior high history textbook than a TV tie-in. I'd recommend checking out "Welcome to Twin Peaks: A Complete Guide to Who's Who and What's What" and/or "Twin Peaks: Behind the Scenes" instead.
A map, some clues, and some damn fine coffee.......1999-02-10
What would a third season of this great television show provided? This book provides the clues as well as other interesting tidbits, including a drawing of the Owl Cave petroglyph and other oddities. Some entries are sketchy a best, but this is a must have for any fan of the little town with a popualtion of 51,201
Book Description
In the beginning there was dial-up, and it was slow; then came broadband in the form of cable, which redefined how we access the internet, share information, and communicate with each other online. Hacking the Cable Modem goes inside the device that makes Internet via cable possible and, along the way, reveals secrets of many popular cable modems, including products from Motorola, RCA, WebSTAR, D-Link and more.
Inside Hacking The Cable Modem, you'll learn:
the history of cable modem hacking
how a cable modem works
the importance of firmware (including multiple ways to install new firmware)
how to unblock network ports and unlock hidden features
how to hack and modify your cable modem
what uncapping is and how it makes cable modems upload and download faster
Written for people at all skill levels, the book features step-by-step tutorials with easy to follow diagrams, source code examples, hardware schematics, links to software (exclusive to this book!), and previously unreleased cable modem hacks.
Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book, but don't try this at home!.......2007-07-05
I think it's well written, informative, and a great resource if you want to hack into your modem.
But...
1) You will get caught if you uncap your modem. The companies that provide cable modem service can trace unchecked bandwidth, and they'll ban you for life from their service. Uncapping will backfire on you. This has been in the news a lot lately, with stories of people getting caught doing this. It hardly seems worth it to me.
2) There is really no other reason (besides uncapping it) to hack your modem unless you just like tinkering with electronics. If that's what you're after, get the book. For most of us, we wanted to get faster speed, but since that's going to get your busted really quick, why waste your time?
3) Doesn't cover all modems, esp the newer ones (that's to be expected), so be cautious since the hacking methods may not transfer to a newer model (like mine).
Real title should be "How to become a thief"!.......2007-02-09
I find it really disgusting that books like this are out there under the guise of "free speech". This is a how-to book whose sole purpose is to teach you how to commit a crime! That's right - hacking your cable modem is a crime! In most states, a felony. It's called Theft of Services, and carries some rather stiff penalties. I used to work for a cable Internet provider in their security department, and I can tell you that I have personally watched people hauled away in handcuffs for following the directions given to them by this author on his website (did he mention that hacked modems are NOT undetectable?).
Bottom line - regardless of the respective legalities, it's stealing. It costs the cable companies money to provide bandwidth. The more bandwidth they need to provide, the more the cost to them, so they have to charge for more bandwidth. Cable is also a shared bandwidth technology. If you are stealing bandwidth, this is bandwidth the company is not allotting for - who do you think loses then? Your neighbors. All of a sudden, the broadband connection they ARE paying for slows to a crawl.
This book is another example of a really sad state of affairs today - the fact that more people every day join the morally bankrupt who believe that right and wrong do not matter. All that matters is whether or not something benefits them.
The best!.......2007-02-06
I have found it to be perfect. It explains everything in an easy to uderstand fashion. In fact I have that copy of LinuxJournal here, and that's why I bought my copy.
It's the curious and serious hacker who will best benefit from this extensive, well-detailed coverage........2006-12-11
Cable modem owners who want to do more than see it placidly sit alongside a computer will want HACKING THE CABLE MODEM: WHAT CABLE COMPANIES DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW. What is there to know about the cable modem? Plenty, according to underground hacker DerEngel, who began hacking cable modems five years ago. Secrets of many popular cable modem products include step-by-step tutorials with source code examples, diagrams, and even schematics - something usually absent from hacker's guides - to survey files, applications, and how to unblock network ports, unlock hidden features, and modify a cable modem system. While it's touted for all users at all skills levels, obviously it's the curious and serious hacker who will best benefit from this extensive, well-detailed coverage.

A great book on cable modem details.......2006-12-11
Usually the modems used for high speed connections to the internet will remain the black boxes sitting on the shelf between your cable and PC or home network. Those wanting to do or know more should take a look at this book. This is a "how" as well as a "how to" book. However, for the most part, his hacks are beyond the capabilities of the average cable modem subscriber. It examines the technology employed by the cable industry as well as details for specific products. The list of cable modems presented is extensive but, because this is a static book, obviously not exhaustive as this is a list in constant flux. Still, the collection is impressive, as is the detail allotted to each.
Cable modems sometimes provide a web server interface for configuration purposes. This book looks under the hood even if there is no user-configurable interface. It presents the procedures for doing this as well as tweaks and tricks that can be used to change a modem's configuration and capabilities. The book is concise and detailed. There are sections on the physical components and how to get at them without destroying the case or the components. There is probably the most lucid and short description I have read of how buffer overflows work, and there are explicit instructions on how to change speed settings and port controls. Your mileage will vary and it is possible to turn your modem into something that has the equivalent usefulness of a brick. Still, it makes the job much easier if you plan on trying to "adjust" your modem.
The book is also useful as a practical example of reverse engineering. Few books attempt to do this. This book does so by example and a rather practical one at that. Developers needing to interface to other black boxes in their design may be able to take some of the tips and tricks and apply them in other circumstances.
The author explicitly states that he does not condone stealing bandwidth from cable providers. He argues that system administrators need to know how to configure cable modems to effectively manage their Internet connectivity. However, possibly the most valuable contribution the author has made to the world of security is to create a manual that the cable operators and cable modem manufacturers can use to harden their devices against malicious attacks. For people interested in either application, this is a worthwhile book. The following is the table of contents:
Chapter 1: A History of Cable Modem Hacking
