Not Good for Introducing the Subject.......2007-10-01
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I'm not really that dim either. I thought I was the only one that didn't understand how they get from the example problems to the end-of-chapter problems until I read several reviews from others who had the same problem.
My instructor keeps telling everyone that has problems in the class, "Wait until you get to Digital Fundamentals - that will really give you trouble." Hmm, I've had DF and earned an A. Yes, I had to study and work hard at it, but at least I was able to understand getting from point A to point D!
At this juncture it is either get out while I can, without a grade penalty, or hope that I can catch up by going thru other books. I have ordered other books, but will be trying this class again next semester. I wish I had known at the beginning of the semester that I would need further texts to fill in the blanks!
Lab Manual.......2007-08-25
Is there a reason that the experiments that are suppose to accompany the 11ed book are based off the 10ed book?
John@home.com.......2003-07-09
First of all, this is the best introductory book I have ever read. Boylestadt does an excellent job of getting to the point on the subjects he talks about. The tools he explains in network theorems are very good for the ones who wish to bone up on their skills. You might want to have some other books that explain the subject a little simpler, but you have to work any way to get at that knowledge level. This is a good class room book where one is in a group and can communicate the thoughts they have leaned from the book.
This book is not about devices such as transistors and diodes but its about how accurately you can analyze the circuit. On top of that every mistake he makes in one edition,he corrects it in another edition. So you can guess that this book is pretty good. You don't necessarily have to have a TI-86,but it makes the work flow pretty easily. You need to know what an integrand sign means but for the most part it is a very readable book.
Boylestadt has books out on devices, too. If it's like this book
you know its very knowledgable.
A student who is using this book for Circuits Analysis.......2002-03-11
Hello to everyone who reads my review of this book. First of all for those of you who will need a TI-86 calculator which this book calls for, dont worry about because doesnt even tell you how to use it for certain applications such as Super Mesh, Method Analysis and so on. I had to go to a student who was in a College Algebra class to learn how to use this calculator for this book! Second my professor shows better examples on solve the problems in the book which the book makes it so confusing. You have to ask the professor to show several examples to learn what the book is covering. I would suggest to professors and the Director/Chairman as a student, look for a book that you can use in the class other than this where students can learn from and not become so confused over the material to where almost every student in the class has to ask the professor several questions about the topic and meet with him one on one. I am speaking for other students by the way. I am also helping the professors also. Get a book that students can learn from instead of a one on one discusssion with the professor. Some thing else other than this book! Thanks for your time reading my review. ~Scott~
Lack of communication, needs more depth in examples........2002-03-04
This book has a very clear, "lack of communication". The book is fine for the basics but the problem exercises do not involve the basics. The author explains problems from the beginning but goes straight to the end with the problem exercises. There needs to be more depth between the examples and the problems. This book is fine for some one who already knows it. But,if you don't and want to get confused and frustrated, then I recommend this book. If you are unfortunate and are forced to use this book, I would look for an outside source for reference. Beware!!! My question to the author is: Why are you keeping the middle a secret. This stuff is not as hard as the author makes it. To sum this up, the author says here is an elementary example now I want you to solve this advanced problem. Students need more examples with more depth. This book may be titled as introductory but it sure is geared for the more advanced. Thanks, but no thanks.

Book Description
This textbook provides a thorough and systematic introduction to designing digital circuits. The author is the leading programming language designer of our time and in this book, based on a course for 2nd-year students at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, he aims to close the gap between hardware and software design. He encourages the student to put the theory to work in exercises that include lab work culminating in the design of a simple yet complete computer. The lab work is based on a workstation equipped with a single field programmable gate array chip and software tools for entering, editing, and analyzing designs. This text is a modern introduction to designing circuits using state-of-the-art technology and a concise, easy to master hardware description language (Lola)
Customer Reviews:
Best book of its kind.......2005-06-23
This is an unusual little book that addresses a specific need: the first introduction to hardware how and why for someone who's already a competent programmer. That audience has very different needs than those of electrical engineering students learning logic design, but I know of no other book intended for that audience.
The pace is brisk. It starts at the level of bipolar transistors, and shows the differences between a CMOS and TTL totem pole. Before page 100, the student has seen combinational logic, registers, RAM and ROM, and the Lola hardware design language, and is designing a CPU. By the time the book ends, the student has seen bit-slice controllers, microprocessors and IO systems, and the inner workings of a UART.
This is not idle play. 99% of all processors these days do not run Windows or Unix. Instead, they're inside of sewing machines, fuel injectors, implanted defibrillators, and anti-lock brakes. Schools do little, if anything at all, to prepare students for working in an environment where software and hardware are interchangeable. In those worlds, a programmer is often called upon to specify and debug hardware, at least as one member of a mixed development team. They may even need to understand how to create logic circuits that perform computing tasks. Silicon Graphics and Cray have both released main-stream processors that have programmable logic strapped onto their CPUs, and someone has to make that logic work.
Because of its unique direction, this book skips nearly all of what a "logic design" book would address. There is no Karnaugh mapping, state minimization, or mention of logic hazards (though the student does get a look at some kinds of transient glitches). There is bare mention of asynchronous design, a bugbear of logic design students and now relegated to narrow niches. There are, however, schematics and part lists for a CPU built from MSI logc, for a microprocessor-based computer, and for the gate-array logic design of a small CPU.
An EE might poo-poo this book as "logic lite," because it doesn't teach all that manly circuit stuff. Well, it wasn't meant to. The student who studies this book carefully, however, will be ready to deal with ground bounce, spec sheets, and a wide range of problems from the analog level on up.
Wirth's dense but readable book is my choice for a programmer's first look inside the hardware. I just wish there were an edition newer than the 1995 printing.

An unusual approach towards circuit design and HDLs.......1998-11-25
When this book appeared in 1995, I had a look at it, but I did not buy it. Why not ?
Wirth describes the basics of modern circuit design without going too much into the electrical details. After a short look at transistors (bipolar and FET) he goes to gates (NAND/NOR/NOT) and shows how to create building blocks like multiplexers, ROM and RAM with them. This presentation culminates in the description of a simple microprocessor core. But it looked a bit too elementary at first sight.
Nevertheless, 3 years later I bought the book, started reading it and still enjoy reading it. Why this change of view ? What I overlooked at first sight was the HDL that Wirth introduces after the presentation of the building blocks in chapter 7. This language is called Lola (Logic Language) and is much simpler than VHDL, Verilog and even simpler than Abel. Lola looks a bit like the other languages Wirth created (Pascal, Modula, Oberon). In the second half of the book, he uses this language to specify his processor design and some peripherals (like a UART). These readable and concise designs together with the unique approach to circuit design are the main reasons why I can recommend this book.
Warning: If you want to learn a HDL that is widely accepted in the industry, learn VHDL, Verilog or Abel. Lola is the outgrowth of an academic project and will not enable you to earn much money in the industry. But I like it and the book.

Book Description
Musician, composer, producer: Brian Eno is unique in contemporary music. Best known in recent years for producing U2's sensational albums, Eno began his career as a synthesizer player for Roxy Music. He has since released many solo albums, both rock and ambient, written music for film and television soundtracks, and collaborated with David Bowie, David Byrne, Robert Fripp, and classical and experimental composers. His pioneering ambient sound has been enormously influential, and without him today's rock would have a decidedly different sound. Drawing on Eno's own words to examine his influences and ideas, this book-featuring a new afterword and an updated discography and bibliography-will long remain provocative and definitive.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-05-10
This book is full of information.
Eno's views on music and art are interesting and brilliant. Quotations from Eno himself are in this book in great numbers.
If you love Eno's music, read this book. Highly recommended.
For musican who are also Eno fans.......2006-03-16
The information provided in this book is very thorough. The author outlines each album song by song. The writing, however is somewhat dry. It is delightful to read Eno's own words through out the book. Eno has a wonderful view on music as art which is rarely covered in most music publications. Overall, it is a must for any Brian Eno fan who is also a musician or artist.
If you're interested in Eno, you might want to know..........2006-02-18
Sorry, I haven't read it yet. But I thought potential buyers might want to know that this book and the same author's book on Robert Fripp are both available for free download from the author's web site. An act of generosity that certainly deserves five stars.
insightful treatment of the mystique-shrouded Eno.......2001-05-25
Eno has long since attained quasi-mythical status in hip circles. Considered a, if not The, "Father of Ambient," he is a paragon for the all-black-wearing conceptual art school crowd. What most interests me as a sociologist is how Eno's reputation came about, when, he admits himself, he is responsible for "no breakthroughs" (pp. 172-173), and is more important as an influence than someone whose records many people actually listen to. (For instance, I doubt if too many people in chill rooms at raves listen to Eno -- more likely it's the Orb, or FSOL, or the many others influenced by Terry Riley, Eno and others.)
The thing is, I have been around long enough to remember Eno as the androgynous keyboard player for Roxy Music, and so I've seen him move from '70s prog-rock to Father of Ambient. Nice move! It seems to me that his position is based on 2 very different things: 1) fame by association, based on his collaborations and production of Bowie, the Talking Heads and U2, and 2) his late '70s move toward "ambient" on recordings such as MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS and ON LAND. Two crucial influences on Eno are Satie, who started an anti-romantic movement in music, and Cage, who saw himself as an "inventor" in the field of music, with no particular musical aptitude. Eno, likewise, strikes a minimalist posture in opposition to the excess of '70s prog-rock (ie, ELP, Yes), and a cool posture in opposition to the hot, angry punk movement. Anti-heroic and detached.
So it seems to me that Eno has managed to succeed in an unusual way by working in the interstices between genres, and by refusing to be pigeonholed by any tendency. He has been in the right place at the right time, for instance, attaching himself to the Talking Heads and thus transitioning from the '70s to the '80s in style, and has known the right people. He keeps moving, keeps experimenting, and maintains tension between multiple positions. For instance, he minimizes emotion compared to much conventional pop, but tries to maintain a "seductive" prettiness (p. 174) compared to the dry formalism of the avant-garde. He's avant-garde, but also a populist! A fascinating element that Tamm reveals is Eno's technical proficiency, and deliberate use of mechanical "glitches" to produce unique sounds.
Tamm apparently wrote this originally as a Ph.D thesis -- I wonder how many dissertations there are by now on Eno? At least as edited for DaCapo, it is an excellent work of musical scholarship. In particular, Tamm does a superb job of using direct quotes from Eno to make his main points. If you're at all interested in Eno, Tamm's book is well worth reading.
Good examination of Eno's public life.......2000-07-16
Since very little is known of Eno's private life, this book takes a pretty good and professional look at his composing life, starting with Roxy Music and up to about 1990. The most interesting aspects are the clear explanations of Eno's techniques and concepts. I found many of the ideas and thoughts applicable to other art forms, and am using some of the ideas for work of my own now. Be warned that the book does assume the reader has a certain level of understanding of music theory and contemporary music, but there is still much to enjoy if you are a newcomer to these ideas.

Praise for Dan Kwong:
"Somehow, Kwong has held onto his sense of childlike wonder about the cosmos, and that awe informs his free-wheeling and uproarious performance."
-Asian Week
"He weaves striking, multi-focus stage pictures around simple monologues about his Chinese and Japanese grandfathers, ironic accounts of his own childhood, and litanies of the trials facing Asian American males."
-L.A. Times
"Saturated with high-spirited enthusiasm . . . a refreshingly forthright approach to his often dark material."
-Chicago Tribune
"Kwong's humor is warm and loving . . . it stems from a delightfully twisted taste for the absurdity of human behavior. . . . Be prepared to laugh, to be moved, and to fall in love with a performer."
-L.A. Reader
Dan Kwong's performances delve into the complexities of growing up as a working-class Chinese-Japanese-American male in L.A., land of Hollywood and Disney. Kwong's remarkable performances, a potent array of multimedia effects and athletic physicalization, investigate questions of identity and the intersecting effects of race, culture, class, gender, and sexuality. From Inner Worlds to Outer Space brings together Kwong's scripts with illuminating commentary by critic Robert Vorlicky. The book includes interviews that reveal Kwong's personal and artistic influences, his evolution as an artist, and his philosophical and technical approach to art-making.

Customer Reviews:
Gary Talks About Gary.......2006-08-20
Sorry Gary but this is not what I wanted. A "how-to" book it's not. This book skims over the industry and is mostly all "Gary" and his wonderful past. Okay, I concede, he's had a excellent career and I'd enjoy reading his bio but I did not intend to get it out of this book! I think Gary owes me a free VO session!
How to Make a Million Dollars with Your Book Sales..........2005-12-27
This book is padded with a lot of anecdotes--including a liberal amount of name-dropping--from Gary Owens' career. (And it's only a little over 200 pages at that.) If you look forward to reading some of his reminiscences (which admittedly can be amusing at times), then you might enjoy this book. But if you are hoping for much in-depth discussion or expert advice about the voiceover business, it's best to look elsewhere.
It's a shame, really--with Owens' experience and long career, he should have been able to produce a much better "how to" manual than this collection of self-indulgent musings. Although, it seems by his own narrative he came by most of his jobs through serendipity or knowing other people in show business, so maybe he just didn't have that much practical advice to impart to modern voice acting students. Anyway, he should have written a much different book, or at least given this one a title more indicative of the actual contents.
Absolutely wonderful book - thanks for sharing the memories!.......2005-03-09
This is one of the most illuminating and funny books I've read in years. As someone who makes a living with my voice, it's a pleasure to read the musings and goings-on from a true classic pioneer, Gary Owens, revealed in this masterpiece of literary shenanigans.
Upbeat, immensely readable, and very useful with tips and insights from one of the greats (who has a terrific sense of humor!), this was both uplifting and educational ... and really really fun - thanks Gary!
GREAT VOICE- GREAT LAUGHS!.......2005-01-21
Do you still precede a mention of a city with the words
"beautiful downtown"? Are you a fan of goofy cartoon superheroes?
If so, you're a Gary Owens fan, and this book is for you whether you actually want a broadcast career or not. That's because Gary Owens is one of the greatest voice artists ever, and a most erudite, witty fellow to boot. Most of us outside L.A. know him from his work on "Laugh-In" and cartoon characters like "Roger Ramjet" and "Space Ghost". But Gary does it all- deejay, video game narrator, Hollywood emcee, sportscaster (of sorts), promo/
ad voiceovers- and has been at it since high school. Best of all, his booming voice is perfect for the bad (and good) puns, double-entendres and Groucho-esque wisecracks he's graced the airwaves with for nearly half a century. This book is Gary's tour of the unique voice-work field, packed with great Hollywood anecdotes and inside poop about how to handle the mike. Did I mention he's very witty, too? If you have any interest in radio, voice-overs, great comedy, Hollywood, cartoons, bloopers, classic humorists- did I leave anything out?- or you'd just like to learn about it with a most personable and clever guide, don't miss the one and only Gary Owens- whose voice has been somewhere in my brain for over 30 years. Come to think of it, a CD/DVD of Gary's greatest bits and characters would be very welcome, too!
The master shares his secrets.......2004-08-31
What could be better than an educational book that is hysterical? Gary Owens has accomplished this with his great new book. Not only do you learn the tricks of the trade from one of the greatest voices in the business, but also you'll laugh out loud doing it.
Gary tells the real story of how to break into the voice over business with expert advice. This one book can tell you everything you need.
In addition, you get to experience the star power Gary has accomplished in his career. This book contains stories and pictures about every major star in Hollywood. From Bob Hope to David Letterman, Bill Cosby to Lucille Ball, Gary has worked with them all. Plus, you'll get great insights into the groundbreaking comedy "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In".
Gary Owens has taken us inside the many ways using your voice can make millions. Now, let's see what I have learned.
Place hand over my ear and repeat "Live from Beautiful downtown Burbank! It's Gary Owens great new book". You'll love it!
Book Description
Over 95% of computers around the world are running at least one Microsoft product. Microsoft Windows Software Update Service is designed to provide patches and updates to every one of these computers.
The book will begin by describing the feature set of WSUS, and the benefits it provides to system administrators. Next, the reader will learn the steps that must be taken to configure their servers and workstations to make the compatible with WSUS. A special section then follows to help readers migrate from Microsofts earlier update service, Software Update Service (SUS) to WSUS. The next chapters will then address the particular needs and complexities of managing WSUS on an enterprise network. Although WSUS is designed to streamline the update process, this service can still be a challenge for administrators to use effectively. To address these issues, the next chapters deal specifically with common problems that occur and the reader is provides with invaluable troubleshooting information. One of the other primary objectives of WSUS is to improve the overall security of Windows networks by ensuring that all systems have the most recent security updates and patches. To help achieve this goal, the next sections cover securing WSUS itself, so that critical security patches are always applied and cannot be compromised by malicious hackers.
* Only book available on Microsoft's brand new, Windows Server Update Services
* Employs Syngress' proven "How to Cheat" methodology providing readers with everything they need and nothing they don't
* WSUS works with every Microsoft product, meaning any system administrator running a Windows-based network is a potential customer for this book

WSUS Review.......2006-03-17
This book gave me other technical knowledge that Microsoft did not include in their online set up of WSUS.
Pleasantly surprised..........2006-01-13
I have to admit, when I first saw the title on the shelf at my local bookstore, I laughed thinking "Why does WSUS need an entire book dedicated to it?" I picked it up and started flipping through it because I was curious.
I actually ended up sitting down and reading through some of it and was surprised about how many features and configuration options I wasnt aware of! Well done.
