Greatest beginners book!.......2004-06-02

This is my best introductory to dc/ac electronics book out there and this beats them all. All of the other books are too complicated and missing quite a few important concepts. This book covers all of the basics and has a very nice approach for learners like me that has difficulty comprehending new material. Nice review and test questions in the back. Only main drawback is price... ouch

A very sweet book. Many of the entries made me burst out laughing. Others made me cry. The children really capture that ambivalence--that love and loathing, gratitude and irritation--we all feel towards our siblings when we're young (maybe even when we're not so young...).

This far-ranging book shows how human memory influences the organization of music. The book is divided into two parts. The first part presents basic ideas about memory and perception from cognitive psychology and, to some extent, cognitive linguistics. Topics include auditory processing, perception, and recognition. The second part describes in detail how the concepts from the first part are exemplified in music. The presentation is based on three levels of musical experience: event fusion (the formation of single musical events from acoustical vibrations in the air, on a time scale too small to exhibit rhythm), melody and rhythm, and form. The focus in the latter is on the psychological conditions necessary for making large-scale--that is, formal--boundaries clear in music rather than on traditional musical forms. The book also discusses the idea that much of the language used to describe musical structures and processes is metaphorical. It encourages readers to consider the possibility that the process of musical composition can be "a metaphorical transformation of their own experience into sound."

The book also touches on unresolved debates about psychological musical universals, information theory, and the operation of neurons. It requires no formal musical training and contains a glossary and an appendix of listening examples.

This book explores hearing and memory from a highly technological view point. It is difficult for the average person even with a college degree to follow and renders one bored after only a few pages of trying to follow the tiny details in the book.

not much to add to Sean Bennett's review, which is very cogent, but just wanted to second the high ranking--this is a book that deserves to be acknowledged and read.

An outstanding introduction to issues in music and memory........2001-06-28

Written textbook style, Snyder's Music and Memory surveys what was previously the largely disparate literature linking cognitive psychology, linguistics, music, neuroscience, and memory. Accessible to the beginner in this interdisciplinary field, Snyder takes effort to introduce musical concepts and terminology before moving to higher level analyses. However, the expert in this field will still find many interesting bits of information regarding current papers on music and memory in these introductory chapters. As the book progresses, the scale of the ideas becomes more grandiose, but Snyder manages to support his tenets about the brain and music well. The chapters are sometimes divided by topic (like rhythm, or syntactic hierarchy in music). This enormous undertaking succeeds admirably -- and even if you are not a cognitive musicologist, you will find many interesting bits of information about this book about why you remember that certain song you've heard on the radio or TV. A+++.

Fans and detractors of popular music tend to agree on one thing: popular music is a bellwether of an individual's political and cultural values. In the United States, for example, one cannot think of the counterculture apart from its music. For that reason, in virtually every country in the world, some group identifies popular music as a source of potential danger and wants to regulate it. Policing Pop looks into the many ways in which popular music and artists around the world are subjected to censorship, ranging from state control and repression to the efforts of special interest or religious groups to limit expression.

The essays collected here focus on the forms of censorship as well as specific instances of how the state and other agencies have attempted to restrict the types of music produced, recorded and performed within a culture. Several show how even unsuccessful attempts to exert the power of the state can cause artists to self-censor. Others point to material that taxes even the most liberal defenders of free speech. Taken together, these essays demonstrate that censoring agents target popular music all over the world, and they raise questions about how artists and the public can resist the narrowing of cultural expression.

Wonderful insight.......2006-06-02

Policing Pop opens with a very recent account of censorship in America, relating to our "post-9/11" world. The book goes through many great points on the censorship of music. The insight Martin Cloonan gives allows the reader to understand the current climate of music censorship here and abroad.
Unlike the other review of this book on Amazon, I do not feel this book to be "week" or weak for that matter. I would recommend this book to anyone with a love for the freedom of speech through music.

Mediocre, at best.......2004-11-25

While "Policing Pop" does provide some insight into the behind the scenes policing/censoring that occurs at record labels, overall the book is pretty week. Cloonan's "definition" of what actually constitutes policing/censorship is at best subjective. The pieces dealing with the internet and future of online music feel dated. The book attempts to tackle censorship on a global scale, but would be better served if it had focused on a single region. After reading the book you come away with a vague feeling about the nature of censorship and policing in various countries in relation to pop music. Because of this, a great deal of the conclusions are over generalized so that they apply globally. There must be better books out there.

I got this book because I was new to the area - Am I glad I did! It has lots of wonderful places to visit including nature parks that locals didn't even know existed. I have given a copy of this book to all my overseas & out of state guests and they have enjoyed exploring the wonderful area we live in. Does not contain the big theme parks - we all know where they are - but all the hidden and interesting places that are suitable for all ages. A great book!!!!

An excellent resource!.......2000-03-04

I've lived in the Tampa area for a year now, and I was under the impression that besides Busch Gardens, there wasn't much to do. Boy was I wrong! This book not only gives great attractions to see in the area, including Pasco & other counties, but it also details things like great restaurants and stores that have been here forever. (Try Pete's Famous Smoked Fish in Clearwater, if you like smoked fish. The mackeral is to die for!) If you just want to get out of the house one weekend, this is the book for you!

A nice introduction to Florida.......2007-03-22

As newcomers to Tampa, we have found the One Tank Trips series to be a simple and delightful way to learn about our area. We can pick something new every week of the year and head out with basic directions. The fees and hours are not always current, but that is to be expected with any publication that quotes such information. The sights picked for the books are always interesting and provide lots of conversational tidbits. Many of our neighbors have lived here for years and haven't seen some of the places we have visited, guided by these books.

Very Impressive!.......2006-09-06

I bought this book sight unseen hoping that it would provide some nice pictures of action poses that I could use in game art. But I am happy to say that this book proved to be much much more.

The first half of the book breaks down the human body, piece by piece, with lots of pictures and discussion in a friendly non-clinical way. Then the book goes into things like proportions and different body shapes depending on age, fitness, gender etc,. Then it goes into the "action" poses. There are stop-motion pictures of walking, running, sitting, standing, walking up and down stairs, jumping, throwing, and others.

This book is a really tremendous all-around reference for drawing/modelling/animating the human body.
