4 out of 5 stars Creative dating tips.......2001-01-17

As a man, I probably shouldn't be writing in and voicing my opinion on this book, but I will anyways. I liked reading it. I have dated many women and have been married once. This book might not offer the answer to a lifetime of wonderful bliss, it does offer practical advise on fun and exciting things to do on your date. After reading this book and taking some of it's tips to heart, I went out on a date and we had a fun, exciting and wonderful time. My date can't wait till next weekend and I can't wait to dazzle her again, thanks to this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book offers many romantic tips that anyone can use.......2001-01-17

My sister gave me this book for my birthday and I have to say, I enjoyed reading it. The wonderful tips this book offers can be used all couple, wheather you're just starting out or if you've been dating awhile. It doesn't offer things most people don't already know, but it does serve as a reminder of what to do for fun, real fun that can be romantic, funny and sexy. I liked reading it and i'm passing it on to my younger sister now.

5 out of 5 stars this book contains good tips on romance.......2001-01-17

I read this book and although it offers no brain busting advise, it does offer practical tips that seem to be fun, sexy, and romantic. For me, it served more as a reminder of the fun and romantic things that two people can do on a date. I have been in a relationship for several years and as time goes by, you tend to get into a pattern and dating your mate is not on your priority list. This book helped me and my boyfirend get back into the swing of doing fun things and we've actually started dating each other again. I loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great, informative, creative and romantic book.......2001-01-06

I really enjoyed reading this book. It contains many creative and romatic things to do while on a date. Yes, some of these things all of us have already done, but it's still worth reading and serves as a reminder to alot of us, to go out and do fun things. I have never played darts, but after reading this book, my boyfriend and I went to a local pub, drank beer and played darts. We had lots of fun and got to see how competitive we were. We also had a picnic at night in a park. The night was pretty, the moon was full and it was very romantic. Although this book doesn't contain any brain storming ideas, it's great reading material with good romantic tips.

        3 out of 5 stars Agree.......2000-08-04

I thought these reviews must be a little harsh. Well, they are. However, this is not to say that this book is good. It is certainly average. You won't find many creative ideas here but they may prove to inspire some.

Here are some better books for creative dates. The Romantic's Guide by Michael Webb and Creative Dating by Dan Fields.

5 out of 5 stars Even If you don't like GG Allin, you will love this book!.......2007-08-08

I love GG Allin & The Murder Junkies, and I think this book does a great job of telling about how they really were. It was so entertaining, I finished reading it with out even taking a break. Its alittle on the short side, but its definately portrays GG and company as the hard hitting maniacs that they really were. Alot of thing subject matter in the book will shock and offend many people, especially the photos (pukes). Evan Cohen is no Ernst Hemmingway, but I think he did a great job as an author. This book (like the band) is not for everyone, but those looking for a taboo read, I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars what did you expect?.......2006-11-01

just like gg who i was aqqainted with like a million other people you dont get what you expect you get what you deserve lol this was a short book just like the tour i noticed some typos too it was the penguin pub not club now defunct. i caught that show it was typical of his shows now that he is dead and you can get his stuff everywhere the thrill is gone
but for all who are interested now its worth it

4 out of 5 stars Great contribution to the history of punk.......2006-05-16

Cohen's book is an account of GG Allin's last tour, a four-week van trip of music, destruction, blood, sexual perversity, violence, and, of course, defecation. Author Cohen is a nice Jewish kid who got his roadie job with GG Allin precisely because he wasn't a rabid, insane Allin fan. He stood quietly on the sideline's to videotape the band's one-of-a-kind shows. However, GG did rub his bloody head on Cohen's jacket each night after the show, Cohen crammed into tiny hotel rooms with four unwashed, unclean, bruised Murder Junkie band members on a regular basis.

Cohen's trip diary is a shock-fest, pure and simple, but an objective one. Chapters about the tour alternate with brief passages telling about Allin's childhood and rise in the music business. Dozens of photos appear throughout the book, and it includes a CD of tour recordings and interviews. All in all, vicariously living the GG Allin tour experience in text, visuals, music, and spoken word is well worth the price of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Short but Very Entertaining!.......2006-01-14

After reading this book you'll figure out why GG Allin had over ten back up bands thru out his career as a performing artist. How memorable was GG? I heard radio jock Howard Stern mention him a few times on his radio show. Definately the most outrageous performance artist to hit a stage!

5 out of 5 stars free your mind.......2004-09-15

I'm going to be honest: I was afraid to read this book. I don't assimilate disturbing imagery well and I was afraid certain details of the book might become forever lodged in my mind, haunting and confusing me. That's exactly what happened.

In support of the author I finally decided to just jump into the book, come what may. Two days after the book arrived (and after two days of placing the gruesome cover face down on my desk) I picked it up and started to read. Forty-eight hours later I feel sympathy for a man whom many might say deserved none, and that, I believe, is due to what was the loyally enmeshed and yet cautiously objective presence of author, roadie, documentarian, and honorary Murder Junkie Evan Cohen.

I read this book in three separate sittings and found myself rearranging my schedule to make time for the last thirty unread pages. No stranger to the road myself, I delighted in the memories evoked by the details of the band's tour: hard travel, long hours behind the wheel, bad food, cheap motels. Any similarity to my experiences ends abruptly there, as GG and the Murder Junkies are subjected to the equally unpredictable nature of their fans, sleazy booking agents, and horrific opening bands. They are steeped in drink, illness, women, exhaustion, country music, adrenaline, liberty, and madness. Cohen's attention to detail gives a specific, genuine, and purposeful life to all of these elements, as well as to GG himself. This book is alive, undated, a testimonial to the purity (or impurity) of the moment.

Like most anyone who saw GG Allin perform, I felt curiosity and apprehension about approaching the subject, even in book form. Now that I have read it, I see that I needn't have worried. Cohen graciously affords the reader the option of standing near the back in the safe zones, but he also expands those zones to bring you face-to-face (as he literally was) with the incomprehensible and abstract violence, the sociopathic perversion, the thrill of rage - all the intensity available via the terrified, yet unflinching, mind's eye of the author.

Evan Cohen was chosen to be one of only four other people on this fragile satellite to mark that last slash on the wall with GG Allin. In his time as a Murder Junkie he saw and experienced things most human beings never will, perhaps even shouldn't. Why it was deemed that he be the one sober witness to such undreamt-of chaos must still plague him. I submit that the answer lies within the covers of this compelling memoir.

          Book Description

The German-speaking world has spawned some of the most extreme contrasts between products of culture--the endlessly fascinating, if clichéd, Beethoven-Hitler dichotomy--and thus provokes compelling questions about culture and identity. A User's Guide to German Cultural Studies is an invitation to explore the rapidly expanding scholarship in cultural studies within the German context.
This collection brings together more than twenty-five essays from top-notch scholars and astute cultural critics who examine diverse questions in both broad outlines and specific instances. A literary scholar investigates multiculturalism in German literature; a political scientist asks which past Germans live with after reunification; a historian studies the revival of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1829; a journalist wonders how we learn to stop hating the Germans.
More than just a sampler of current work, however, the volume aims at practical applications. Through introductory and linking comments by the editors, essays by expert practitioners, and a unique section devoted to resources for teaching, the book offers a variety of new approaches to studying and teaching German culture and illustrates by example the potential of cultural studies generally.
Previous cultural studies readers have fallen short of the interdisciplinary ideal they imagined for themselves. Growing out of long-term collaboration between its editors and contributors, A User's Guide to German Cultural Studies is a model for this kind of work. The essays speak to each other because their authors have done just that. Together they take advantage of a particularly auspicious moment to reconsider crucial theoretical and pedagogical issues relating to things German.
Scott Denham is Associate Professor of German, Davidson College. Irene Kacandes is Assistant Professor of German Studies and Comparative Literature, Dartmouth College. Jonathan Petropoulos is Associate Professor of History, Loyola College in Maryland.

Forty-five classic episodes of the most entertaining writing to have gone into television anywhere. The minister of silly walks, the dead parrot, banter in a cheese shop - here is every silly, satirical skit, every snide insult, every saucy aside.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars And now for something completely different.......2007-05-07

I've seen "Monty Python's Flying Circus" so many times that I can recite long stretches of it. But those guys are always using weird accents and manic deliveries ("My neeples explode with delight!"), and sometimes they're hard to understad.

Fortunately for those times, Python fans have "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words," a series from the second half of the classic comedy skit show. These are only trascripts (a bit lacking in details), but still enormous fun and full of delightfully quotable lines ("And now my lords, my ladies... your LUPINS!").

It opes with the weird "Conquistador Coffee" sketch, in which a boss berates his employee for changing the brand's name to Conquistador Instant Leprosy. ("The tingling fresh coffee that brings you exciting new cholera, mange, dropsy, the clap, hard pad, and athlete's foot." "It was a soft sell, sir.")

And then it contains plenty of others: the cheese shop with no cheese, films with giant teeth, spam spam spam, cannibal undertakers, Njorl's it's-not-that-terrible saga, the BBC's financial troubles, the Money Programme, the pantomime horse, hairdressers climbing Everest, the war against pornography, Gumbys, Dennis Moore, kamikaze highlanders, and the golden age of ballooning ("I am so excited I can hardly wash!").

The dialogue to each one is carefully outlined, with each character identified as being played by one of the guys (like "Interviewer (JOHN)"), although we usually don't get to hear much about Terry Gilliam's mad animations. Most of these episodes are one long continuing sketch that spills from one scenario to the next, but occasionally we'll have different ones patched together.

These guys had a rare, crazy talent -- these sketches are crammed with glorious dialogue ("Drop your panties, Sir William. I cannot wait till lunchtime") and bizarre insults ("you cloth-eared heap of anteater's catarrh"). Not much description of the action in places, although in a few we get plenty of detail when it's called for (such as the weirdness convention).

The problem is that this should only be read after you've seen the series. If you don't, it all seems like a befuddling string of of stream-of-consciousness comedy numbers, full of in-jokes and surreal twists. You have a better chance of finding Ilchester in a cheese shop than understanding this without seeing the skits first.

In case you couldn't understand what Eric Idle was bibbling in one episode, or John Cleese was screaming in another, "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words Volume 2" will tell you what is going on. No time to lose!

          4 out of 5 stars Monthy Python.......2007-01-11

This item was purchased for my daughter and she absolutely loved it. It was received in good order and in a timely manner

          5 out of 5 stars The goat's done a bundle.......2004-01-14

FYI-This is the same as the review of Volume 1. There was no real sense in distinguishing the two.

As a fan of MPFC since it first aired on PBS in 1973, these two volumes sort of put a cap on a 30 year fascination with the team. Maybe like me, you've watched every Python-Marathon or taped every show, but having these scripts really is the icing on the cake.

What's striking to me is the simplicity of the scripts. When you watch the episodes, the gags seem so complicated. Then to see The Dead Parrot sketch reduced to just a few pages, you realize how brilliant those guys were in terms of compression, and in terms of acting. An added plus, for me at least, was to finally see the words and phrases that I never quite "got" because they were unique to British English. From there, I logged on to a few websites on British slang and, boy, I realized what MPFC got away with...some of it was pretty raunchy. Anyway, this is two-volume set is priceless for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars "Ah...it was the middle one.".......2002-07-28

The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words, Volume 2 is the second half of a set containing the scripts of the entire series (45 episodes). This book, volume 2, contains scripts for episode 24: "How not to be seen" through episode 45: "Party Political Broadcast". This book is more fun than an endless supply of "lupins". Both volumes make great companions to the MPFC video/dvd collection ("There you go, can't be bad.") and also unlike the DVDs, there are no edits, these are the original words. So that horrible "m" word that Graham said in episode 31: "The All England Summarize Proust Competition" is in this book. Enjoy!

Yours etc., Brigadier Mainwaring Smith Smith Smith etc., Deceased etc.

5 out of 5 stars The companion volume to Volume I is this, Volume II.......2002-03-19

          "It's satire."
"No, it isn't. This is zany madcap humour."

With that immortal exchange, nearly everything Pythonian is summed up. For those who haven't memorized every single Python skit (or for those who have and who are looking to free up some short-term memory), this book and its companion volume ("All The Words, Volume I") are must-haves. Every single word from every single bit ever done on "Monty Python's Flying Circus" is in here. It's a joy and a treasure and a non-stap laff riot.

Every Python nut is familiar with the "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" tale, the dead parrot sketch, the Ministry of Silly Walks and so on. But even beyond these justly famed classics, there is wonderfully silly stuff herein. I never realized until buying this and the companion Volume I how utterly the Python crew had mastered the gorgeously silly non-sequiter. To wit:

"Would Albert Einstein ever have hit upon the theory of relativity if he hadn't been clever?"

"Don't call me señor! I'm not a Spanish person. You must call me Mr. Biggles, or Group Captain Biggles, or Mary Biggles if I'm dressed as my wife, but never señor."

"I'm afraid we are unable to show you any more of that letter. We continue with a man with a stoat through his head."

"Were you worried when his head started to come loose?"

It just doesn't get any better than this, and being able to sit and peruse the scripts without watching the frenetic activity on the screen only goes to strengthen the generally accepted view that these guys were genius writers. As the book back states, these volumes are the winners of "the 1989 PYTHON PRIZE for their own books." ARE there higher honors than this?

The Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference has a remarkably tight focus. It's about making Oracle database management systems run optimally under various Unix operating systems, including HP-UX, Sun Solaris, and IBM AIX (there's also some specialized coverage of IRIX and DEC Unix). Author Donald Burleson assumes readers know how to get around the Unix command shell, and that they're quite familiar with Oracle database administration. To put it simply, to get the most out of this book, you should already know what you want to do, and need only to be told concisely how to do it. This book is ideal for people moving from Oracle administration under Windows to the same job under Unix.

As a byproduct of its careful focus, the book is tiny. It almost fits in a shirt pocket, and is about as thick as a standard pencil. A typical entry documents a single command (there are separate entries for different operating systems when commands differ), and includes a bit of text followed by the relevant command and a listing of typical output. Utility scripts with Oracle relevance are listed with minimal comments. This isn't traditional man-page-style Unix documentation, but rather advice on how to accomplish various Oracle goals inside Unix. Most readers will likely turn first to the index to find the entries that they need. --David Wall

Topics covered: Making Oracle database management systems run well under HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, IRIX, and DEC Unix. Ways of examining and adjusting Oracle's use of processes, memory, processor cycles, files, disk resources, and other aspects of the Unix system. Information is presented in recipes, in type-this-to-do-that format.

              Book Description

The Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference puts within easy reach the commands that Oracle database administrators need most when operating in a Unix environment. If you are an Oracle DBA moving to Unix from another environment such as Windows NT or IBM Mainframe, you know that these commands are far different from those covered in most beginning Unix books. To jump start your learning process, Don Burleson has gathered together in this succinct book the Unix commands he most often uses when managing Oracle databases. You'll be able to reach into your pocket for the answer when you need to know how to: And there's much more between these covers. If you need to get up to speed with Oracle on Unix, and quickly, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Tips and Tricks.......2005-06-29

This booklet contains a collection of shell script code snippets and other UNIX tips for the DBA. Not everything will be useful for everyone, but only the most experienced UNIX geek will fail to find one trick or the other that he did not know before. And what else is UNIX expertise if not knowledge about such little tricks?

I especially liked the sections about commands to collect performance statistics for the UNIX boxes your databases run on. You do not normally find these commands in general UNIX books (not even in the meatiest ones) and would have to turn to special UNIX admin books, which might be sort of an overkill for a mere DBA.

The book also introduces into some very basic UNIX concepts like piping commands and changing file permissions. This is superfluous as this booklet does by no means repalce a full-fledged UNIX introduction. But if you are a DBA who has already read his "UNIX for Beginners" or the like and who wants to delve a little bit deeper into HP-UX or AIX, than this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Most useful for Oracle DBAs.......2005-05-09

This is a very helpful book which provides a basic overview of using Unix running Oracle. Perhaps the best feature of this book is that the author has spent lot of time providing only the most useful and salient Unix scripts for the Oracle DBA. You will not find any unnecessary or redundant information in this book. In fact, I highly recommend all Oracle DBAs to read this book and memorize all its ideas.

Here are some of the best tips:
1)Script to kill all Oracle processes.
2)Place a SQL * Plus script in a Unix Shell Wrapper
3)Ensure that only the Oracle user can run a Unix shell script
4)Execute a SQL*Plus Script on all the instances in the enterprise.
5)Automatically delete old trace and audit files
6)Copy TNSnames.ora to all the Unix servers in the enterprise
7)Detect when Oracle is not accepting connections and send alert

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book for Unix newbies.......2004-07-28

This booklet is full of usefull Unix commands, most of them at the junior level and just a few more are complex. I used this book maybe 10 times since I bought it a couple of years ago, so I am not sure that I have utilizied my purchase well.

Still, I would recommend the book to any DBA who is new to Unix.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the UNIX Novice.......2004-05-28

Decent reference - at least pointing out some interesting options and some things to watch out for at the OS level. As mentioned in other reviews - its HP-UX oriented with nearly as much focus on AIX, but lacks detail on Solaris (and Linux).
Fairly well written - but mainly pretty simple content. Just keeps you from looking up the syntax in some cases. If you are new to UNIX its probably worth the purchase. If you are an experienced UNIX professional - find it used to make it a worth-while purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable book for Oracle dbas who are new in unix.......2002-12-12

This is a book that should be in the pocket of all Oracle dbas
beginners in unix, and specially those fighting with several
              flavors of unix.
If you are an experienced oracle dba working with Windows NT
or Open VMS and new in unix, these book can help you.
It's reading is easy ç, since the book contains the basics that an oracle dba need to know in order to begin working with unix as soon as possible.
