The 1990s saw lower- and middle-income countries throughout the world come under pressure to open their domestic markets to international trade and investment. Despite the progressive implementation of market-friendly policies, many emerging market countries experienced financial market volatility, exchange rate collapse, and slumps in output. These problems profoundly affected two of the world's largest middle-income industrialized countries—Brazil and South Korea. Despite superficial similarities, prior to the onset of crisis both countries had very different models of industrialization and had adopted contrasting approaches to trade and market reform.

An Excellent resource of U.S. history and capitalism.......2006-04-06

This is one of a few well-known authors who actually offers a solution to our current Capitalist system. There are many great scholars out there like Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky, but few write with such a passion and charisma as Jack Barnes. This is a MUST READ for any College student and professor of the genre. Anyone who wants to understand our capitalist system needs to get a hold of this book. If you have any intellectual curiosity buy this book. IT'S A MUST!

The reviewer who calls himself "Jim Cannon's Ghost" says that "there are many outstanding and intelligent Marxist writers out there, but Barnes is not one of them." Interestingly he doesn't manage to name even one of these. And while calling it "the worst sort of pseudo-Marxist nonsense." he offers no specific criticisms. One has to wonder if he has even read the book.
This is essential reading for anyone trying to understand the world today; the trade wars, shooting wars, the ongoing economic crisis, and the continuing shift to the right of bourgeois politics.
Is "globalization" really the problem, or are we still in the same era described by Lenin in Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism? Can you fight against U.S. wars by claiming that "peace is patriotic"? Are the unions dead, or is there ongoing resistance?

This is the worst sort of pseudo-Marxist nonsense; there are many outstanding and intelligent Marxist writers out there, but Barnes is not one of them. I find it sad to see that Pathfinder books, which many years ago produced a lot of worthwhile literature, is now devoted to the musings of the senile leader of a bizarre sect (i.e., Barnes). So, in short, save your money (Pathfinder's books are over-priced anyway) - and don't bother with all the so-called reviewers (members of Barnes' group) who give his book 5 stars!

This book is simply great. The rich, colorful photographs brings the guitars to life. There's plenty of information for the reader without being overwhelmed. Any guitarist would do well to purchase this book at least to have a snapshot of the wonderful world of guitar history.

A nice insight into luthiers, but not all that comprehensive.......2007-03-13

Though I like the book, the highlights are more about the luthiers and not so much on the quality of the guitars they make. The book is layed out in a chronological order, and focuses on just one luthier and guitar per year.. This is confusing, as many luthiers produce guitars across 40,50 even 60 years. So, this approach doesn't really work for me.

The book could have benefited from a comparison of major achievements introduced by each luthier, and focused on broad comparisons of different guitars. It instead focuses on the personalities of the luthiers.

If the reason you want to purchase the book is to help you find a concert guitar, this book will provide a good reference to the major luthiers operating today. However, if you are looking to find distinguishing features about the guitars, you will be hard pressed to do so, as the book provides just a few tidbits of information in that regard.

Not what it claims.......2007-02-20

For people interested in a detailed discussion of different types of guitar it may be just the ticket, but I was looking for something more general. There is precious little information about players, composers, repertoire, etc.
This book is for people interested in the construction of guitars and it's not really a "History of the Classical Guitar" as I understand the expression.
It's all very well for Amazon to say we can have a refund. What they don't tell you is that you have to post it back to America - and it's a large and heavy book!

Read this book before you buy a classical guitar.......2005-08-29

A mouthwatering book for any amateur classical guitarist. Large paperback format with fold-out double pages to enable full length illustrations of historic classical guitars. The book is in the form of a series of essays by several writers on the early development of the guitar, on guitar construction, and detailed chapters on the leading guitar makers from Antonio Torres to the present day. These are illustrated by watercolour sketches of the luthiers (guitar makers) and of the guitars. There are text boxes about the leading classical guitarists and their (changing) guitar preferences over the years, and even details about which guitars were used on which records or CD's - Julian Bream played two Bouchets on "Popular Classics for the Spanish Guitar" (one was stolen from the trunk of his car), a Rubio on "Twentieth Century Guitar" and on more recent discs a Romanillos.
Recommended background reading for any student about to buy an expensive instrument. Apart from anything else it unravels the intricacies of the Ramirez dynasty!

Incredible Book.......2002-08-22

If you are a lover of guitars, specifically classical guitars, you owe it to yourself to purchase this book. There is nothing else like it. Great photography, details on some of the best guitars from some of the best makers...Romanillos, Smallman, Bernabe...They are all here. Inclusively, the book covers players (Williams, Bream, Segovia) as well as an in depth look at wood and the guitar market today. Great stuff and at ..., an incredible bargain.

This is an intriguing concept for a book of photo interviews. But then, award-winning documentary photographer Jana Marcus has always been drawn to the fringe; And one of her earlier collections was entitled Midnight in Manhattan: A Decade of Subcultures and the Alternative Scene. In the Shadow of the Vampire, her first book, assembles portraits of and interviews with the devotees and disciples of the Queen of Vampirism herself, Anne Rice. And who are these people? Office administrators, translators, shop owners, students, and the more flamboyant (blood drinkers, S&M'ers, role-playing gamers).

"Her books allow people to think about their place in society and identify their feelings through her characters' exploration of unconventional lifestyles," she opines. "It is extraordinary how many people I've spoken to who had never read a book before they read an Anne Rice novel." Ever think of Anne Rice as an inadvertent champion of literacy? As may be expected, the reflections are a mixture of the banal and the more thought-provoking. The phenomenon of Anne Rice's celebrity is after all--well, phenomenal. The enormity of her appeal has given birth to the annual Gathering of The Coven Ball in New Orleans, movies, an Anne Rice tour company, a perfume line, a Lestat wine, and T-shirts emblazoned with an MRI of Rice's brain. i am in this book as well and would like to say that the demographic that it covers is indeed accurate and diverse. i attended anne's booksigning for "violin" just minutes after i attended my own at britton trice's store. anne herself asked if our intentions were pure by participating in this conglomeration, and i assured her that we were sincere indeed. she read and embraced the book, and that's all the proof i need. it was a pleasure being involved with jana and the others back in '96 and '97; truly an experience that i will forever cherish.

I was there........2005-08-26

This book features stories and photography of people and events around the 1995 Memnoch Ball that Anne hosted at a home she used to own called St. Elizabeth's, a former orphange and one of the settings of Memnoch the Devil. I was an ARVLFC fan club member and volunteer worker at that party and I must say that this book is a good representation of the people you would have run across there but more importantly it is a window to a place in time that burned brightly and served its purpose in creating good memories. This book and its photographs take me back to those magical moments like any good photo album should. Perhaps you just had to be there to appreciate all the stories this book has to offer but it is definitely worth the read. The fan club and the big parties officially ended in 2000 but we have been having a more intimate Ball in New Orleans every Halloween weekend since 2002 known as Les Temps des Vampires and the Vampire Lestat Ball. Through this event we keep a little of the spirit seen in this wonderful book alive.

A fascinating read!.......2002-11-13

This book gives an interesting glance into the world of Anne Rice fans; however, it may either affirm or disprove the notion that her fans are "weirdos." The book features college students, accountants, writers, exotic dancers, make-up artists, etc. While it features intriguing people from all walks of life, I don't believe it's an entirely accurate view of her fans, and I feel that the book still tries to perpetuate a certain fan stereotype, as though reading Anne Rice makes you estranged from the rest of society.

As a previous reviewer noted, Anne Rice is mainstream. Admitting you are a fan is not a taboo like declaring you are a dominatrix. There are fans who never made it to the ARVLFC balls when they were still going on; there are fans who have no interest in exploring New Orleans outside of the books; and there are fans who detest "Goth" culture but still devour every single book Rice releases. It would have been a far more representative book had it featured a larger diversity of fans. I have met prudes who are uneasy watching kissing scenes on television, yet they read the books over and over again without flinching. Now, if that isn't a testament of Rice's enormous talent and gift, I don't know what is.

However, the book is still wonderfully constructed. The photographs are nothing short of superb, the fan accounts a delight to read, and one really does walk away feeling that maybe those stereotypes are wrong.

Excellent portrayal of a cross section of Anne Rice Fans.......1997-12-18

Jana Marcus did Anne Rice fans a favor by putting this book together. She showed us that we are "normal" (even if the rest of society/literary world doesn't appreciate Anne Rice and her writings.) When the average reader thinks of Anne Rice fans, s/he has the image that the fans pagans, eccentrics and just plain weird. (Usually these are folks that only know the author by her reputation only.) In the Shadow of the Vampire dispells this myth is dispelled. In one book, Jana Marcus has been able to show there is a large cross section of society that calls itself "Anne Rice fans." These fans DO NOT fit neatly into a mold as others would prefer, rather they make their OWN mold. I know, I'm in the book.

Only the Wierdos..........1997-12-05

I am a die hard Anne Rice fan, and an insurance executive. To pick up a book that purports to be written about her fans, and see only the bloodsuckers, goths and sub/doms was not a real picture of who her fans are.

Anne Rice's fans are moms and dads, teenagers, and goths. Her fans probably represent every single type of person in the world. She receives fan mail from Catholic priests, as well as those who want to become immortal. Doctors, lawyers and waitresses read Sleeping Beauty. Anne Rice has become mainstream - her work is not on the fringe of anything and neither are most of her fans.

So, my opinion was that the fans that were interviewed and published in the book attempted to put limits on a woman's work whose appeal is absolutely limitless.

This book covers some new and interesting topics in interactive digital multimedia industry, such as Digital TV, Metadata, Digital Broadcast, Digital Rights Management, Ambient Multimedia, and so on. This book provides you a broad and comprehensive view about the current multimedia application and service industry. It's the first book I have ever seen to cover so many key words and state-of-art technologies in this field. It's really a useful book for both beginners and advanced readers.

Besides the key words above, the book also covers many critical standards, from MPEG-2/4/7/21 to DVB/MHP. However, the author efficiently combined the standards, theories and practical examples, explains these profound things in a extremely simple way, which prevents you from tedious and difficult studying of these standards.

The authors focused on both the technologies and the applications. The vivid examples, and the coherent technology clue, make the reader easily get involved into the scenarios in this book. DTV and metadata.......2004-10-16

One way to determine the level of growth of a research field is to assess the availability of relevant conferences, journals and books. In particular, the latter is a good measure of the maturity of the field, since they provide an overview of a critical mass of published work. In the interactive TV field, there been more than a few conferences and special issues in journals, but books are still scarce. So, it was a pleasant surprise to discover the book "Digital Interactive TV and Metadata", which was written by a very active team of researchers from the Digital Media Institute at the Tampere University of Technology, in Finland.

The first part of the book (Theory) begins with a short overview of DTV standards and the respective applications types that are enabled by this basic set of industry standards. Next, the book surveys the fields of Web, multimedia, DTV, in order to provide an extensive overview of metadata standards, which is the core focus of this work. Having laid the background theory, the authors present the "Digital Broadcast Item Model", which they have helped define, in the context of the MPEG21 standard. The first part of the book closes with a discussion of the implementation requirements for metadata in DTV systems.

The second part of the book (Application) begins with an interdisciplinary analysis of DTV in the fields of business strategy, consumer behaviour and narrative, all of which are put in a metadata context at the end of the chapter. Next, the authors describe the application of metadata in several DTV fields, such as digital rights management, production, interactive TV content, and personalization. The book closes with a discussion of a few innovative applications and future scenarios for DTV.

Overall, it is a rather accessible technical book for DTV and metadata. It is suitable for researchers and developers of DTV systems. In a field that is in constant growth it would have run the risk of missing recent developments, but the book is coupled with a web site that offers additional and up-to-date information (http://www.digitalbroadcastitem.tv/). Moreover, the website offers complementary slides, handouts and exercises that can be used for teaching a DTV and metadata module in university programs.
