An honest book from a smart man.......2007-07-09

This book is so honest, that at time it was painfull for me to listen to (I've got an audio version). The realization that I also sometimes want to escape the truth shocked me.

The book contains a lot of things you probably have heard - and not once, BUT Gene makes an old wisdom sound very convincing. He uses logic, facts, statistics and examples to make you re-think your beliefs.

He may sound cynical, but I think he really is a man who uses his brain.

I loved the audio-version - Gene is a charismatic narrator and I listend to the whole 4+ hours of audio in one sitting.

Is Gene sometimes wrong? Maybe. But everybody or almost everybody is.

But not everybody is as honest as Gene.

"If people tell you they don't want more money, they are a) lying, b) insane" - says Gene. It is true. But a lot of people lie about this even to themselves.

The book really made me look at life differently. I now see a "rebel" rock stars like Trent Reznor (a Kiss fan buy the way) or Marilyn Manson in different light - as businesspeople who spend their time earning money by selling their stuff to people, a lot of whom don't know how to spend their time.

It also made me really look at time and money and re-think the value of these resources.

I strongly recommend this book. And even you don't like some or all of Gene's OPINIONS, you still will probably find his ADVICE valid and useful. It works, baby.

Gene does dr.Phil??.......2007-05-25

No... this is not a politically 'correct' book. Its a bottom line type of book. It is refreshing in this era to have things like Money, Marriage, Sex and Business laid out as bluntly as Gene does here. even if you are familiar with these concepts, Gene's way of explaining is unique. Very cocky and very proud. Gotta love it..
There are some Kiss thoughts mixed in for balance and to get Kiss $$, but it is more or less just a mans view on life as we know it. There are good suggestions along with some ideas that you may have never thought of.. A good purchase for the modern man. I dig it.

What a fun character Gene Simmons is *g*, this book is definitely entertaining - he is so full of himself but maybe that's part of his success, he believes in himself at all times (and if he doesn't, he sure doesn't show it) - regardless, enjoy the amusing ride in Gene's world. You have to take him with a grain of salt though or he'll brush you the wrong way. Definitely not a book for narrow minded people, they might have a heart attack reading it ;p. He appears to be a natural in everything he does and when things don't work out, he takes it as "lesson learned" and moves on to the next quest, nothing seems to get him down. As for his "unmarried" state, the man is only brutally honest, this might be tough to swallow for some ladies out there. I don't know what the ladies see in him (unbelievable record there my boy) but he DOES have a good voice and I have the feeling that he can be a very smooth talker if he wants to be (listened to an interview I've found online on NPR). I would give this book 5 stars for the pure entertainment value of it but it IS to repetitious, that's my only complaint. He talks about things and then there are pages sandwiched in between with graphics and it's basically the same content again. Still, I do recommend reading it, it's highly amusing!

The Holocaust is considered a singularly atrocious event in human history, and many people have studied its causes. Yet few questions have been asked about the ways in which West Germans have "forgotten," unlearned, or reconstructed the racial beliefs at the core of the Nazi state in order to build a democratic society. I started watching Dark Shadows when it first appeared on TV and am stil an avid fan. This book allows die-hard fans with a look at what we followed so closely many years ago. Barnabas was my personal favorite so this book is right up my alley.

A Book for All Soap and Showbiz Fans .......2004-10-21

Mr. Hamrick, who apparently knows many of the celebrities he writes about here, has fashioned a wonderful amalgam of trivia and scholarship. His research into the reel and real lives of the characters and cast of the landmark soap Dark Shadows brings the reader not only into the world of Collinwood, but closer to the people who inhabited it and made the fantastic seem real. Highly recommended for all fans of soaps and pop culture.

There are numerous DS books on the market,almost always told from the point of view of a select few who appeared on the show and relate tales heavy on sunshine and roses. While these voices are important, they only provide one dimension. Mr. Hamrick, who has appeared at many of the conventions, is first and foremost a curious fan and thus approaches his writing with that mindset,adding a much needed balance to the scales without the usual rehash. If you can find Hamrick's comprehensive, yet rare 'Collectors Guide', grab this essential title also.

As someone who only recently "discovered" Dark Shadows in re-runs and who has become a newly devoted fan(atic), I found Mr. Hamrick's book an absolutely wonderful source of information regarding the actors and trivia surrounding the show. It was an essential resource to allow me to access information that even long time fans of the show might not know.

Not Quite Enough.......2006-06-21

The book doesn't cover all the topics I had on the exam, and what it does cover it does without much depth. That's OK, I know how to use BOL. I never used the practice question in the book so I can't speak to those. You can get by with this book for the exam if you have some practical experience (imagine that!), use the BOL and most importantly (for me at least), a good practice exam.

Good, but not enought.......2006-05-30

This book explain difficult concepts in a easy way. It is very well organized but lacks of in depth coverage; most T-SQL commands are just covered briefly with no examples at all (Sybex book has more Exercises). I suggest to buy this one with Sybex 70-228 study guide or any other study guide of your choice. This one alone (if you have no previous experience with SQL 2000) will guide you to "failed" screen message when you reach the end of the test.

Needs Some Error Checking.......2003-12-04

There are too many mistakes in this book. You have to read fairly carefully to not get caught by them. For example, one of the "Prep Test" questions for chapter 14 is, "How do you create a temporary backup device?". In the answers it refers the reader to the "Performing Backups" section, which does not contain the specific answer that they're looking for. This is one example out of many where the text does not prepare you at all for a question.

There are also quite a few outright errors in the Prep Tests and Answers sections.

The book in general is quite informative, I'm only rating it this low because of the poor quality of the questions and answers -- it's as if they were added as an afterthought. I'm using this to prepare for 70-228, and now I wish I had a better book.

Excellent Study Guide for 70-228.......2003-08-27

This book is the first I've read from the "Dummies" series and it provided a solid foundation for exam 70-228. It's a practical guide for working through and understanding the objectives for the exam. If you have little or no experience with SQL Server, the hands-on exercises will quickly get you on track with SQL administration. I read this book, worked through the exercises and studied the Transcenders to pass the exam.

Too many mistakes were made both in the context and CD-ROMs. Why don't they spend more time on quality control and stopping waste our time ?
