Book Description

A circuit simulation book that addresses PSpice for Windows! Using a careful step-by-step process, this book takes readers from a simple dc circuit with its customary current and voltage measurements, through a damped resonant circuit requiring rise time to characteristics, to a complex analog/digital circuit that demands sophisticated timing and frequency measurements. Multi-level activities, examples, and exercises allow users to draw circuits directly on the screen, exactly as they would to create initial designs. It also enables them to analyze the circuits using PSpice,—and shows the circuit displayed at a level of detail unavailable through conventional techniques. This book also includes instruction in advanced techniques such as Monte Carlo and Performance. For instruction in DC/AC and devices, operational amplifiers, digital, analog, and filter design. n.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate but poorly presented introduction to OrCAD PSPice.......2003-01-20

This is one of the few books to provide an introduction to PSpice under OrCAD. To be fair, it does cover the basics and it does so to a greater extent than might be considered necessary. If you are a practising engineer looking to get up to speed on the fundamentals of using PSpice (as I am) you will probably find the elementary content and presentation far too simplistic and unecessary. It looks as if it were aimed more at introductory electronics students, getting to grips with this software for the first time. Even allowing for this the text is weak in some areas: for example, electrical phasors are sometimes incorrectly referred to as 'physors'. Who proof-read this? They must have been asleep.

The most useful aspect of the book for new PSpice users are the hints scattered in 'Simulation Notes' throughout. These provide useful tips and hints on how to accomplish various fundamental tasks, such as changing axis settings and modifying traces.

In short, this book has some value to the new PSpice user, but is very poorly produced and overly simple for most engineering students or engineers who may need a basic PSpice reference. The presentation level is low; the whole thing is not really produced to a professional standard but looks as if it were a collection of lecture notes which got turned into a book after some very minimal editing. It's somewhat useful to learn some of the necessary PSpice tricks but falls very short when you consider how much better this topic could have been covered with a more rigorous and less dumbed-down style.

      Book Description

Servants of the State traces the halting rise of a pluralistic attitude in hiring and promotion procedures within the federal government. Ranging from the Great Depression to World War II to the early days of both the civil rights movement and the Cold War, Margaret Rung reveals how circumstances in each of these eras shaped how federal managers conceptualized merit for female and African American workers. At the same time, Rung shows how labor relations, as practiced by the nation's most prominent employer, reflected and fostered broader social and cultural debates concerning American identity in a diverse and democratic society.

Rung draws on an impressive array of sources, including previously unexamined archival materials, oral histories, and personnel manuals, as she tells how federal administrators and employees destabilized earlier patterns of discrimination based on white male privilege--only to confront new challenges engendered by personnel trends grounded in sociology and psychology. In the end, a renewed commitment to democracy and social justice in the 1930s and 1940s did not entail a complete restructuring of government labor relations policy or the merit system. By midcentury, labor segmentation based on race and gender within the federal civil service still existed, as did the tension between managers' desire to support individual initiative and their desire to remedy categorical discrimination against blacks and women.

Questions of individual merit versus group rights remain central to our discussions about the relationship between equality and pluralism. Servants of the State highlights the fluid meaning of merit by focusing on this critical concept in the public-sector workplace. By covering an area frequently ignored by historians, it adds an important historical dimension to current affirmative action debates and other issues that touch on pluralism and individual opportunity.

The O'Reilly Factor isn't just the name of Bill O'Reilly's popular talk show on the Fox News Channel anymore--it's also the title of his book, which, appropriately enough, actually reads like a TV show. The narrative rarely proceeds for more than a few paragraphs before a bold-faced "This Just In" or "Bulletin" pops up on the page and breaks the stream of thought--sort of like a commercial interruption. This provides an ideal forum for O'Reilly to sound off on any number of topics with lots of verve but not too much depth. There are breezy chapters here on money, media, religion, race, and sex, among others. O'Reilly dislikes many things, and he isn't shy about sharing his opinions: "SUVs should be immediately outlawed," he rants. Here's O'Reilly on President Clinton: "What a ridiculous waste!" Attorney General Janet Reno is a "ridiculous, incompetent woman" and President Clinton's "primary 'enabler.'"

This is not a subtle book, and its bombastic approach would be even more grating if it weren't for several flashes of self-deprecation, such as when the author shares a negative piece of viewer mail, or when he writes, "In case you haven't noticed, I'm a cocky bastard." Sometimes O'Reilly's put-downs are creative and funny: "If God has a sense of humor, as I believe he does, [Al Sharpton and David Duke] will be sharing a sauna in the netherworld. With one thermostat." And he's good at illustrating his points with outrageous details. In criticizing the bloated federal budget, for instance, he points to these shockers: $230,000 for a study of housefly sex habits, $27,000 for an analysis of why prisoners want to escape, and $100,000 to find out why Americans don't like beets. (To which he replies: "Houseflies mate when no one is looking. Prisoners don't like prison. Beets don't taste good.") O'Reilly is often considered something of a conservative, but he can also play the blue-collar populist: "The rich want us to believe that anyone can make the quantum leap from bowling league to country club by just working a little harder. That's supposed to keep us motivated and quiet." Fans of his TV show will probably appreciate this cantankerous book. --John J. Miller

"A lot of people love Bill O'Reilly, you see. Then again, a lot of people would like to punch Bill O'Reilly in the nose. The joke's on them, though. Bill O'Reilly, this brash New York guy with a brash show and a brash book, is becoming a huge media star."

           NEWSWEEK

"This book bristles with assumptions, assessments, and attitudes that will either have you bobbing your head in agreement or shaking it in disbelief. No wonder O'Reilly's ratings are rising the way the stocks once did."

4 out of 5 stars Surprisely good for a conservative analysis........2007-08-07

OK, so O'Reilly would not label himself a conservative. However, most people have lumped him into that category. I am not sure that in itself is correct. O'Reilly seems intelligent and moderate in many things a conservative would not be. For example, on gay pride, he states that he has nothing against being gay, but don't show your displeasure in goofy marches. Any sex should be kept in the bedroom. This shows the common sense of Bill O'Reilly as opposed the goofy opinions of some conservative commentators. Bill O'Reilly makes intelligent summations in this book that are hard to argue against.

This is an intelligent read for the politically minded. Although, I think O'Reilly has a big ego, his opinions are wise and bear the test of time.

3 out of 5 stars Someone's Opinion. Good or Bad, Treat it as Such........2007-06-04

"Bill O'reilly's personal view of many things affecting our society" pretty much sums this up. The topics range from raising a child to the media as it affects our society. Much of what he writes are his personal views and opinions.

Whether you believe them or not this book is good to read just to become familiar with someone's opinion who regularly reports on the topics written about. Whatever your opinion of him (good or bad) reading a book like this has it's merits either way. If you believe the opinions, you have another reference. If you don't believe the opinions, you have a contrasting viewpoint for your arguments.

What you should NOT do is buy this book hoping to form an opinion for yourself just from his opinions and suddenly agree or disagree what he says without checking into it.

        ---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
This book is someone's opinion. Treat it as such.
That being said, it is worthwhile to read and would be ideal to borrow, but worth purchasing as well.

            Book Description

Best known as the cofounder of the Irish band The Pogues, Shane MacGowan has become a cult figure on the alternative-music scene. His achingly beautiful lyrics, as well as his legendary lifestyle of excess, have earned him an avid following that packs his shows and buys his albums. One of the most unusual memoirs to come along in quite a while, A Drink with Shane MacGowan is structured as a series of interviews between MacGowan and his wife, Clarke. The singer recounts his experiences growing up on a farm in Ireland, where his family began giving him two pints of Guinness a night at the tender age of five and his father took him to hang out with bookies and drunks at the local pub. He tells of moving to London and becoming part of the London club scene in the mid-1970s, just as punk was beginning to emerge, offering a firsthand portrait of a seminal time and place in music history. MacGowan also provides his own, strongly opinionated views on The Pogues' success and the reasons for his abrupt departure from the band. As he invites us into this fascinating world, MacGowan tells many hilarious stories and riffs on a wide range of subjects, from Irish history and politics to literature, film, religion, his own substance abuse, and much more. Sometimes maddening, sometimes charming, often brilliant, and always honest, A Drink with Shane MacGowan is an enjoyable romp with a truly unique personality. PRAISE FOR SHANE MACGOWAN: "MacGowan can be a dazzling songwriter, channeling his unruliness into rambunctious tales of drinking, sporting, drinking, fighting, and drinking."--Los Angeles Times

1 out of 5 stars Shane at his worst..........2006-12-30

I love the Pogues. I love to read about music. I love to read about the creative process, especially from songwriters. And I consider Shane MacGowan to be a brilliant songwriter. This book, however, is a stream of drunken conversations about his life, his opinions, explanations that he's not really that much of a racist, bragging about his ability to bed fans, etc. The main problem, though, is that his songs boil down his experiences to the essentials, giving brilliant snapshots of certain times, places and characters. These rambling, unedited accounts almost seem like an attempt to give merit to his detractors that say he's not much more than a mouthy drunk. The DVD "If I Should Fall..." balances the two very well. This doesn't even try.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read About Rock'n'Roll's Greatest Drunk.......2006-12-28

"A Drink with Shane MacGowan" is just that. It's a series of Shane MacGowan interviews by his closest companion, girlfriend/wife of over 14 years, Victoria Mary Clarke. Arranged like a play, in 8 acts, Clarke goes into the depths of the mind of the former singer and leading force of the Pogues, Shane MacGowan over various discussions.

The book is a great read that takes you back to his childhood in Tipperary, Ireland, thru his teenage years in London and on the road as the singer of the Nipps and of the Pogues.

Shane MacGowan is a great read because he is honest about his opinions and himself. He doesn't try to please people in this book. He talks about his life from his point of view.

I found many hilarious anecdotes throughout the book such when he recalled Lisa Stansfield breaking his nose and how the Pogues lovely bassist, Cait O'Riordan knocked Matt Dillon down a flight of stairs during the shooting of a the video "Christmas in New York."

The book doesn't talk enough about the songs he wrote. Early in the book, there's a wonderful passage where he discusses the lyrics to "The Dunes."

At times, MacGowan goes off on tangents that aren't clear. But these are mainly sections where he attempts to make a distinction between traditional Irish instruments and replaced instruments (such as the accordian).

MacGowan has a very comical side in his psyche in the form of contradictions. At times, he'll come off as crass, invigorated by the very thought of violence, yet at the same time, intensely religious, but in a "Taoist/Roman Catholic" sense.

He really sheds a lot of light on his proud Irish heritage and made me reflect on my own Irishness proudly.

MacGowan's most interesting sequence in the book came from his contempt of the music industry. At one point he discussed about how pop hits were mundane and boring and blamed that because those with the power like mundane and boring music. To further illustrate his point, he compared a mundane and boring pop song to a mundane and boring murder.

That particular sequence I found hilarious. It also says something to me when it only took me three days to read this 358 page book. With a very bad flu mind you.

Anyway, if you have no one to go to a pub with. Go to the pub anyway, order lagers and read this book. Its company is as good as any great drinking moments with your best friends.

Do not read this literally. I mean, he was and may still very well be a drug addict despite his denials. I think some of his "expertise" should be read more humorously such as when he repeatedly emphasizes that "Brandy" is the worst of all drugs.

            3 out of 5 stars Kinda interesting.......2006-12-11

I love all things pogues/Shane, but this was rather dull. i would recommend it if i could get it at the library.

2 out of 5 stars Shane is interesting as always...writing is horrible.......2006-08-17

This book was a major disappointment for me, I write annoyingly. It seems the "author" had a deadline to meet and threw this trash together at the last minute, I write this time frustratingly. If you like reading an adverb at the end of every sentence this is the book for you. The author has an amazing subject to work with here and chooses to simply mail it in. I can't believe the publisher let her get away with this. If I ever meet this author I will ask for my money back quickly. I teach third grade and most of my students write better than this garbage. I wish I never bought it, I end this review disappointedly.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but where was the editor?.......2005-01-04

I received this as a gift and just read it over the holidays. Shane Macgowan is a great interview subject and his girlfriend manages to pin him down for several coherent and enlightening interviews (which is no mean feat judging from his on-camera interviews captured in the If I Should Fall from Grace film).

However, it seems that she just transcribed the spew from each session, as is, rather than attempt to organize the material into subject categories. While reading the ramblings from the mind of a drunken genius does offer some charm it also allows for sloppy overlaps and omissions. For instance, Shane is very interesting when describing what it was like to discover Punk Rock in 1976 London but just barely touches on his punk band the Nips (or Nipple Erectors). There are also a few glaring about-faces where he slags someone in one interview and then praises them in another.

This was an entertaining (if sloppy) read but some fly-by-night indie press did not put it out. I expected more from Grove Atlantic, was this material edited at all?

One more thing: I read this on an airplane and in a hotel, I would have much preferred to read it at home with my Pogues CD's on shuffle.

5 out of 5 stars An eternal flame. .......2007-08-22

A wonderful compilation of memories from a once-great soap opera. It's a necessary memory tool for Classic GH fans to remember the show before it turned into the poorly produced, poorly written mockery it is today, courtesy of current misproducer Jill Farren Phelps (better known as Dull Darren Delps) and hack writer Bob Guza Jr. (a.k.a. Mob Luza Junior Writer).
It's a fine written tribute to the late, great producer Gloria Monty, who guided GH out of the doldrums in the late 1970s. Monty's best are on parade in the scrapbook --
The love triangle of Luke, Laura and Scott.
The love triangle of Alan, Monica and Rick.
The spy adventures of Luke teamed with Robert Scorpio opposite the wicked and domineering Cassadines.
The expansion of the WSB/spy stories through the characters of Sean Donely, Anna Devane and Frisco and Felicia Jones.
The enduring loving couples that put your faith back in human nature -- Drs. Rick and Lesley Webber, Lee and Gail Baldwin, Steve and Audrey Hardy, Edward and Lila Quartermaine -- are well presented.
The great villains -- Helena Cassadine, Cesar Faison, Grant Putnam, and Heather Webber -- are in the house.
There's also a neat section of GH vets who went on to bigger and better - singer Rick Springfield (GH's Dr. Noah Drake) and Demi Moore (the soap's erstwhile newspaper reporter Jackie Templeton).
Only thing that's needed is an update of the book. The current book only goes as far as 1995. Warner should bring it up to 2002, the year GH began its rapid decline.

            Sincerely,
            J. Mosher.

This is especially great for old time fans like myself, because it reminds us of some great old scenes. It's too bad a lot of the newer actors are not in this, but it's a few years old. I love seeing this on my book shelf, proclaiming my love for GH. A great gift for the fan.

Okay, this book goes back, way back, to the beginning. LOTS of great photos and it explains the storyline as well! So if you wonder what Jason used to be like or who's related to whom...this will explain it all!

            5 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-01-06

This book I will cherish for all my life. I love looking back at the old GH to the present. It just shows you how awesome General hospital is. It has such great stories. Love stories like Brenda and Sonny, Robin and Stone, to break through stories like Allen drug addiction to Stone's AIDS Story. God this book will make you scream in glee or shead a few tears. To All- ENJOY!

            5 out of 5 stars Great Experience!.......2003-07-23

I bought this book as a gift for a friend so I can't comment on the contents but she LOVED it and is a big GH fan so I'm assuming I did well! My experience was exceptional. Got my book within a few days in mint condition as promised!

5 out of 5 stars A wonder collection of GH Memories.......2002-12-30

This book is fantastic. It's a great source of information about your favorite characters before you started watching as well as a tool for remembering who did what in past story lines. The pictures are also a great jog down memory lane. I only wish they'd come out with a more recent edition.

3 out of 5 stars Not That spectacular.......2005-04-15

The book was alright, nothing spectacular. Everything appears to be beyond the scope of the book. I got more information from a one page online article, than I got in this entire book. Yes, yes I've been using apache for quite some time; I'm not a newbie by any means. I just felt it could have been written better, and with more detail, among other things. If you need a reference of some of the things apache could do, and how to do it this book is alright, but if you're looking for a complete reference, this is not it.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book on Apache for Admins and Developers.......2004-01-12

Whether you're a System Admin or Developer, the Apache Administrator's Handbook will help you understand how to build and administer Apache, as well as help you understand how it works. I've read many books on Apache, and this is by far, one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Lots Of Good Information.......2002-08-29

Knowing little about web servers and nothing about Apache, I was looking for some detailed help installing and configuring Apache. The online docs were no help. I needed something that would explain, at a basic level, what needed to be done to get Apache going.

I found this book very helpful in setting up my server. It covered everything about installing and configuring Apache. Config files were explained in detail. Integration with perl and php were wll covered. I also found the chapters on Security and logging helpful as well.

This book is geared toward Unix servers but also contains specific information for the Win32 crowd. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars quick and dirty saves the day........2006-07-22

This book, although dated, is a must have for an apache admin.

A first time apache admin? Not so much. But if you have a general grasp, and you've read the apache documentation, this serves as a good reference. If you want to jump in and look at something really quick, it works great.

The information is fairly accurate, but the writing leaves much to be desired. If you are new to apache, you'll likely get confused if you follow this. But if you start getting some experience and want to tweak it and play around, or if something is broke, keep the book handy.

3 out of 5 stars Technically savvy, but poorly written.......2000-11-03

I don't doubt that Kabir knows what he's talking about in this book, but he's far from a great writer. While installing mod_perl, I found myself rereading the same paragraphs trying to figure out what he meant.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those wanting immediate results.......1999-10-04

I was told by an ISP administrator I would have to pay him 125.00 per hour to get my co-located server up and running on the Internet. After calling ahead and having the clerk look up some titles, I glanced through this book and had the answers I was looking for before I left the bookstore!

            5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......1999-09-02

I don't read most IDG books because they are novice oriented. This one is different! Its for the pros who need real info in real time.

            1 out of 5 stars Copy-Paste!.......1999-08-24

My mistake, I knew that this author writes pretty paethetic stuff on Apache, I still bought this one. Most of things are copy-pasted from the "Bible..." written by the author. In short, Author has no idea what he is writing.
