1 out of 5 stars Basic Book for learners.......2006-02-28

This book is alright if you don't know anything about cameras. It goes through alot of the basics that you can figure out from your owners manual. If you are looking for a good book that teaches you about shutter speeds and f-stop numbers I would look at Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson.

5 out of 5 stars Book overview.......2005-09-24

I bought the book for class. Amazon sold it to me way cheaper than my campus bookstore. I am getting a lot of use out of it, for my photography class. Great recomendation!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Balance.......2004-04-14

Easy to understand. Thorough. Artistic examples drawn from the canon of great photographers both historic and contemporary. Short enough to be affordable for beginning students; deep enough for advanced students.

The only problem with this book is that it's a little bit dated.

This book is a complete portable pack of all the infor, ation most photographers are ever likely to need. This working manual is the distillation of years of professional experience into a form which can readily be understood, both visually and verbally. It aims, quite simply, to present the essentials of photography in compact and usable form. In easy-to-follow sections, every practical aspect of indoor and outdoor photography is covered in a variety of situations, demonstrating how the best results can be achieved.

                      Book Description

In post-Soviet Russia's transition to new political and economic systems, few issues are as important as labor. Although the "worker's paradise" may have been largely imaginary, the loss of job security and benefits that has accompanied marketization could well become a catalyst for yet another political upheaval. In this timely book, Walter Connor explores how the Yeltsin government attempted to avoid this pitfall of system change.

Connor examines Russia's emergent labor politics in the critical first years of the post-Soviet period, focusing on the problems Yeltsin encountered in attempting to adopt a "corporatist" solution to the conflicts of interest that have arisen between labor, employers, and the state. With many employers still heavily dependent on the state while others are already beyond state control, the corporatist effort has been sabotaged, Connor contends, by the lack of distinct interest groups found in more mature market economies. He concludes with an analysis of what these recent developments may portend for Russian politics and government in the near term.

                        Book Description

Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis grew up in Hollywood, hustling a living with his actor father. He eventually discovered music and fell in with Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael “Flea” Balzary to form the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fired up by 1970s funk, rock, ska, and soul, the band fought, split, kissed, made up, and then fought again. This collision of singular personalities and musical genius resulted in a run of albums and reputation as a formidable live act. By the end of the 1980s, though, the band was one man down, with lead guitarist Hillel Slovak dying from a drug overdose. The struggle gave rise to 1989’s groundbreaking Mother’s Milk album. Pre-dating Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers was the first underground band to take what critics dubbed “alternative rock” into the mainstream charts. In 1991, Blood Sugar Sex Magik compounded the Chili Peppers’ success, turning its members into bona fide rock stars and plunging them headlong into a riot of drugs, sex, near-death experiences, and spiritual awakening. This book looks at the group through dozens of photographs, and examines the music and stories of one of the most original bands on the planet.

3 out of 5 stars Song Stories Anyone??.......2007-06-11

When I first got this book I was so excited to finally learn the meanings behind those amazing RHCP songs. But the book doesn't really say much about the songs that fans don't already know. So if you are looking into buying this book, I'd say you should go for it. The pictures are definitely worth it, even if the words aren't. (And yes whoever edited this book did a terrible job, because they did mis-label some of the pictures.) But other than that, any RHCP fan would enjoy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not really "giving it away"..........2007-01-13

Well when I first bought the book, I expected to find out the reasons WHY the songs were written rather than the "intense bass lines".. The title is very misleading and was not was I was anticipating...

P.S.- I did enjoy the pictures even though some of the captions were wrong

                        5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-07-02

Give it away is a perfect book for any fan looking to learn another detail about the chili peppers. I bought it for a gift for a true chili peppers fan and they loved it. It gives short blogs about each song and is really interesting. I suggest buying it since it not really expensive.

                        1 out of 5 stars A poor shoddy excuse for a book........2005-11-27

The book should be "commentary about every song" rather than "stories behind every song". The only thing worse than the "stories" behind the songs is the fact that most of the pictures have the wrong attribution (they keep referring to Cliff Martinez as Jack Irons, and one picture says "Founders - Kiedis, Flea, Slovak, Irons" yet clearly has Chad Smith and Frusciante). The only thing good about this book are the handful of great pictures.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected............2004-07-01

I realize that the RHCP didn't write this book, but I thought there might be a bit more personal insight regarding the who, what, when, where, and why the songs were written. The book's content consists primarily of magazine articles written about the RHCP over the years, followed by the author's own interpretations of the songs and HIS opinion of their quality.
It is well put together, and there are some great pictures, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price!

                          Book Description

This collection of essays contains some of the most exciting and original analyses of the Wagner operas from music critic and composer Robin Holloway, who is known for his trenchant style and impassioned thinking. These essays provide sustained, meditative, and illuminating accounts both of the masterpieces of the romantic era and of the classical tradition from which they derive. Holloway persuades listeners that music matters, that there is a real difference between good and bad, great and trivial, and sincere and sentimental, and that one's enjoyment can only be enhanced by the habit of critical study.

Paul W. Heimel has done a superb job of uncovering and relating the life and times of Eliot Ness, including the role that he and his team of "Untouchables" played in the destruction of Al Capone. Ness was a far more interesting and complex individual than the Hollywood characterizations of him. He was every bit as honest, diligent, and hard-working as his fictional counterpart, but also flawed in terribly human ways. The reader comes away with a deeper understanding of a very real, ultimately tragic human being. Heimel knows how to tell a story well and captures Ness's fascinating life without bogging the tale down in minutia. He provides clear images of Capone and a host of other characters, including FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The paranoid, delusional "G Man" was a neurotic tyrant who could not stomach Ness getting any publicity or credit, no matter how deserved, because he believed it upstaged him and his agency. Ness even merited one of Hoover's many secret files. Indeed, Ness seems to have been harmed by his own success in destroying crooked cops, politicians, and labor thugs, which inevitably made him enemies. His own inability to convert his exemplary public service into business or political success reveals him as all-too human. His final years, and the lack of any material reward for his deeds, are both moving and tragic. This is a real slice of Americana without any glamorization. Heimel deserves our gratitude for rescuing a wonderful man from both near-obscurity and horrible distortion.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that gives Ness the consideration he deserves.......2004-04-19

The second edtion uncovers more information about Ness, disputing those who dismiss his exploits in helping the Treasury Dept. smash Capone's empire. It also disputes those rumors that he was a drunk. The real man is shown here with all his humanness and surprise, he's doesn't come up short. He finally gets the consideration he deserves as a lawman.

5 out of 5 stars THE book on Ness.......2003-11-01

Eliot Ness was a legendary lawman in the twenties and thirties. But entertaining as they are, the various Untouchables movies and television shows don't paint an accurate picture of him.

And The Untouchables (by Ness and Oscar Fraley) and Four Against the Mob (by Fraley) tell part of the story, but leave a lot of detail out, including just about any unflattering pieces.

Heimel's book is the first true attempt at an unbiased look at Ness' life. And have no doubt, Eliot Ness did some amazing things in law enforcement. His time as Cleveland's Public Safety Director is more episode-filled than his Chicago days. As of 2003, there is not a better book out there on Eliot Ness.

4 out of 5 stars The character of a man..............2000-11-04

Heimel's first book was good, this one was excellent. Even if you're not a crime-fighing history buff, this chronology of Ness' life strikes an optimistic cord concerning what ultimately matters in life. Ness made plenty of mistakes in his life, but the testimony to man's efforts at doing the right thing is inspirational. He was not the person Hollywood portrayed him to be, but in some sense, he was much, much, more. This second edition is full of new information and insight. Just as you may find that the "professional" movie critics reviews didn't jibe with how you felt about a movie, you'll most likely come to the same conclusion about this book. Read it yourself. It's well worth the effort!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK ON ELIOT NESS.......1999-12-22

If you are looking for an accurate and interesting book about Eliot Ness, this book is definitely for you. As I was reading this book, it was obvious that Paul Heimel researched Eliot Ness's life in depth. Fact and fiction were separated to get an honest look at Ness's life. Also, I didn't feel that he used any exaggerations and he fairly portrayed Ness. He gave Ness credit for his accomplishments and didn't "sugar-coat" Ness's failures. Ness's human side was captured in the book. Thumbs-up to the author Paul Heimel.

"One thing was certain: someone had declared open season on Elliot Ness, and it was a damned uncomfortable feeling."-Elliot Ness

The sale or consumption of alcohol was not really the problem. The Sicilian mafia landed on American shores sometime around 1899. One of their most notorious progeny was "Scarface" Al Capone with whom Elliot Ness did battle from 1929-1931. Elliot Ness had nearly finished this true story before he died of a heart attack at age 54 in 1957. This book is not a biography of Ness's life, just an account of the two and one half years during which time he and his ten or so hand-picked federal men finally succeeded in stopping Capone in his murderous tracks. The story is mostly about raid after countless raid of breweries by Ness's "untouchables" in the Chicago area during Prohibition and the Depression years. While millions of Americans were starving, shoeless and jobless, Capone and Co. were living the high life and living it as if they were above the law itself. Or so they thought...

Ness chose his men carefully like Gideon in Judges 7; they had to be beyond reproach, content to live on a $2800/year salary and strong enough to resist the temptation of Capone's thugs constantly flaunting thousand dollar bills and diamond-studded fat, fleshy fingers under their noses. Money is powerful in its effects, yet more powerful were those like Ness and co. who, under the law were content to live by it, and who with the law put a lot of rotten, murderous apples behind federal bars. The chief problem with Capone was not just flat out lawlessness or the profligacy his rackets engendered, but corruption which had seeped into all areas of the judicial system, police force, federal agents, judges, lawyers, and other court officials; Capone had lots of money to throw around from the profits of his liquor selling illegal enterprise, and because he never somehow had to pay income taxes. That was the reason why Ness was so careful in selecting his men and also the main reason for their success in finally undoing Capone's vast network of criminals. Once, one of his men working undercover took money from one of Capone's gang, and admitted it to Ness. Ness told him to find the same man and give him back the exact dollar amount he had been given.

Elliot Ness was the coolest fed that ever lived (in my opinion). One had to be tough dealing with the mafia; they stopped at nothing to preserve their domineering hold in their cities. I think that just because Ness did not suffer physical harm from Capone and co. may lead some to think that Capone was not so bad, Ness's life was not so threatened. However, I think it just proves that he really had his wits about him and was sober to every aspect of the circumstances surrounding himself and his men; the threat and evidences of the mafia's revenge such as bullets in their enemies' heads and body parts mutilated is evidence enough to me that Elliot Ness and his "untouchables" were in a deadly battle dealing with the Mafia. Capone had hired Tony Napoli to kill him, read the book and you'll find out how Ness survived.

Exodus 23:8 And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the discerning and perverts the words of the righteous.

So much credit and legitimacy has been lauded this tale over the years that it has tended to be taken as truth.....and no further from the truth could it be. It was written very close to the end of Eliot Ness's life when he was little more than a boozy has-been who would "weave" his tales for anyone who would listen. Usually this was done in some tavern where Ness would corner some sucker for the free drinks that went with his storytelling. A writer by the name of Oscar Fraley saw the chance of big bucks and sure success by putting some of this into print and there you have the reason for this rag to even exist. The TRUE story of Al Capone and the Chicago mob of the prohibition era is MUCH better reading than this tale form some drunk's bleary imagination. Do yourself a favor.....get ahold of and READ the Capone biography by John Kobler. You will get the TRUE story of Capone's rise and fall(which has much more to do with the IRS than with Elliot Ness)and none of the "bologna" that makes up this tall tale. The true story is plenty TALL itself.

5 out of 5 stars The right man for the time.......2001-12-27

This book is one of the few accounts we have of the '20s gangster era. The book recounts Eliot Ness's experiences as the leader of a team of nine men who were assigned the job of cutting off Al Capone's main sourse of income-illgeal booze. Ness and his team were part of a two pronged attact to get Capone. While agent Frank Wilson gathered evidence to convict Capone of tax evaison, Ness and his team raided stills and breweries that provided Capone with income to bribe police and newsmen. The book recounts the selection of the team and their early failures and successes. When Ness made a raid he often informed the media to show that some lawmen were honest and as a result he has been called a glory hound. The book tells of their many raids and some insight on the Chicago mob. The book has been accused of exaggerating but much in the book has be varified and Ness WAS celebrated as a hero in the New York Times when Capone was convicted. Ness died before this book was published and is not responsible for the Eliot Ness legend. When we needed lawmen to set the example Ness did the job he was called to do, and moved on.

2 out of 5 stars Ness does tend to exaggerate a bit.......2001-11-09

I've read this book and I think that Elliot Ness did exaggerate a bit. Yes, he may have been in the team set out to capture Capone, he may even have been the group leader but in the book he does exaggerate his bravery and the risks he took. I would not recommend this book if you don't like reading lies.

                            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-09-29

Some have complained that this book is fiction. I am ashamed of the people who said that Eliot Ness was an old drunk who captured a few beer stills. They obviously didn't read the book. Eliot Ness told sportswriter Oscar Fraley that he didn't want any fiction but Fraley convinced Ness that fiction was needed. This describes the life of Eliot Ness in Chicago. One must look at this through an eye of skeptiscm. But this is truly excellent reading. Most of it is true but the estimates that Ness and Fraley made are somewhat exagerrated. But otherwise this is a story which will entice your senses and will make you so thankful you weren't a mobster in the 30's

Even if you're not a dummy, the sixth edition of The Internet for Dummies is one of the best user's guides to the Internet now available. Many so-called Internet books are nothing more than printed collections of Web addresses, but John Levine, Carol Baroudi, and Margaret Levine Young recognize that deciding to use the Internet involves financial commitments and computer-hardware decisions as much as it does looking at neat pictures. That said, don't expect to set up your own e-commerce site with this book, and don't expect to find step-by-step instructions for starting your computer. But do expect to get some good advice about picking an ISP (Internet Service Provider), protecting your privacy (and your kids), and connecting with Windows or a Mac. The authors also do an exceptional job of explaining such terms as PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) and what it is for, and they even talk about the old Unix shell account (with a Lynx text browser) for those not getting a PPP account. You'll find tips for optimizing your browser for speed, building your first Web page, managing e-mail, subscribing to mailing lists, and, yes, shopping. What is most impressive, however, is the balanced approach the authors take in evaluating Web sites (they do give some Web addresses), online services, and browser software. They offer the pros and cons and let you sort it out. They also include their own Web address so you can look for updates to the book and check on their latest favorites. --Patrick O'Kelley

                            5 out of 5 stars My review.......2002-04-19

An excellent read for the internet novice and the start of my dummies collection. You were right about TUCOWS, a good site if you can stand the cow puns. I received my very first e-mail message from your site's mail-bot.

4 out of 5 stars excellent audio introduction........2002-02-20

It is an almost 90 minutes clear audiotape recorded in 1995 describing all these terms dealing with the web, internet. It start with definition and description (www, homepage) a new way for communication, it open a network of networking. Brief details about history of development. Requirement for usage: computer, and greatly details the advantages and disadvantages of each provider. Also talk about the huge benefit such as looking for college, or even education online. On the other end talk about inappropriate content of internet and different methods for parental control, and touch on the "addicted to". Also give few details about etiquette: do not flame, SPAM.

Despite being 1995 information. But most of them will hold true and correct for many years, and I found them very informative despite being familiar with majority of them, but it was fun to get an idea about what internet was in 1996, and get helpful advices about different provider and security. I rated four stars only due to 1996, had I heard it then it deserves five stars easily.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.......2001-03-24

I have several dummies books, from how to build a PC to CCNA. I had to read this rediculous book when I worked for a very well known DSL provider on the East Coast. This book was trivial, assumes that you are completely mindless and plugs certain products and services shamelessly. Yes, I agree, Hot Bot is a pretty good search engine...but it is not the only one out there. This book has technical incosistansies throughout and is basically a really really long advertisement. Easily the worst dummies book in print, and Im not being a jerk, I love dummies books, Ron Gilster rocks, but this is absolute crap. You can honestly get more informed with a magazine.
