Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?
In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.
Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.
Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

Book Description
This book comprehensively examines the performance of Bangladeshi agriculture in light of the most recent thinking on economic development and the environment. It both analyzes the experience during the last five decades and discusses the major issues and challenges with special emphasis on the prospects for sustainable agricultural development in the future.
The authors emphasize the importance of distributional aspects of environmental change and development in relation to employment and poverty and also focus on gender issues - often ignored in traditional theory.
Many of the issues that arise in Bangladesh in connection with the agricultural-development nexus are not unique to the country. Parallels exist elsewhere in the developing world and as such Bangladesh is useful as an example from which to draw conclusions about much of the developing world. Environment and Agriculture in a Developing Economy will therefore be of particular interest to developmental and environmental economists as well as international organizations and NGOs committed to environment and development issues.

Book Description
Today, the public sector in Africa, like in much of the rest of the world, is perceived as having led to inefficiency, waste, indifference and corruption in the provision of public services generally. The power supply sector is now experiencing a process of restructuring and reform, including privatization. The contributors to this volume, who are themselves involved in the policy process in their own countries, examine how far this movement towards restructuring and reform has proceeded in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Based on empirical research, the authors have generated policy options and scenarios that are bound to be of vital interest to policy makers and implementers throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
Book Description
This encyclopedia is designed to provide mandolin players with a wide variety of chords in different voicings. This book is intended as both a starting point of learning chord voicings and patterns, as well as a dictionary of common mandolin chords. Each key section includes the first position scale for that key, as well as the chord formula and notes for each chord. If you want to learn to be a bluegrass rhythm player it helps to have a guide or 'map' to take you through the initial learning stage. This book provides a small but powerful set of starter chords used in this style of music. Once these chords are learned, you'll be able to jam with other musicians in no time. These are the same chords used by greats like Bill Monroe, Doyle Lawson, David Grisman and hundreds of other bluegrass players in this genre. While there are only a few chords presented in the "map" section, they form the foundation of bluegrass mandolin and with them you can play literally thousands of songs in every key. Chords are presented by key.
Customer Reviews:
An indespensible reference tool.......2007-06-05
An excellent resource for the novice player (like myself) for both mandolin and violin chords, scales, and more. I highly recommend this book, especially for those who, like myself, play sliding scales on the guitar but need a quick reference to sliding scales on mandolin for blues, bluegrass and jazz. You can also apply the information directly to the violin, if you're like me who's trying to learn both instruments. Also, check out Mel Bay's Mandolin Scales and Studies for scale tablatures.
Very helpful.......2006-07-25
An excellent volume at a good price. It has a logical layout and provides much needed information for a beginner like myself or a more advanced player. There are a few fingering forms not included, however, and that's why I gave it four stars.
Could be the only mandolin chord book you'll ever need.......2005-01-06
I've been playing about two years and I refer to this book often. It has just about every chord you will ever need (and many that you will never need).
I like that it shows different inversions of chords in different positions. It helps you find a chord form in the current position you are playing in.
Also includes helpful tips on movable chords.

Customer Reviews:
Way out of date.......2007-02-16
This is way out of date, and has a lot of uninteresting information apparently used to fill out what otherwise would be a short book. Still, the old episodes are the best ones. I like having a list of them. Also, they provide the scoop on such disasterous cast decisions involving George Dzunda (he left and was a nightmare to work with), Dann Florek and Chris Noth.
Excellent Information!.......2007-02-13
L&O is my favorite show. I've seen every episode several times. This book helped me to understand more about the characters, and about the episodes. I'm impressed with it.
Still interesting, but it does need an update.......2006-12-17
The authors couldn't have known it when it was written, but they managed to write the definitive behind the scenes look at Law and Order when it was at its best, which was the first nine seasons. Shortly after this book was written, Steven Hill left the show as seasoned D.A. Adam Schiff, and a series of bad casting choices began to degrade the show's quality.
Particularly interesting are how all of the cast changes happened, including the actors' stories on how they found out and their reactions versus the reasonings of the show's producers. For example, Richard Brooks, who played ADA Robinette during the show's first three seasons, said he found out he had been ousted via a message on his answering machine and was very perplexed by the decision. The producers said that the reason for getting rid of Brooks was that he and Moriarty did not get along at all. We also learn that originally Chris Noth thought that the addition of the character of Lenny Briscoe, perhaps the most beloved character in Law and Order history, was a mistake because Briscoe and Logan were too much alike and could practically finish each other's sentences. Eventually the producers came to the same decision as Noth - and fired Noth. At the time this book was published this was still perhaps the most controversial personnel move made by the show. There is also the behind-the-scenes story of Michael Moriarty's resignation, which includes a bizarre if not paranoid letter from Moriarty in which he says that he believed Janet Reno and the federal government were wanting to censor the show.
Another chapter I really liked was on the challenges of filming on location in New York City. The California crew members are always afraid of New York traffic interfering with the logistics of filming, when in fact traffic can be more unpredictable in California. There were some occasional problems with crime - in 1992 a mugger trying to evade police hid under Paul Sorvino's trailer. Another time, someone shot a policeman down the street from where filming was taking place, with the gunshots clearly audible to the cast and crew. Also, S. Epatha Merkerson says she gets annoyed at all of the graffiti that NYPD Blue put up on the walls when they did filming, since that is more of an L.A. than a New York thing, by her estimation.
All in all, I found this book an interesting read, even though it is several years old. Perhaps a second edition will be in order after the show is over, once the cast, crew, and producers can be honest about some of the mistakes that have been made over the years since this book was published, particularly in the area of casting decisions.
Entertaining, useful and sadly dated........2006-02-11
A great little book covering both the territory of a behind the scenes book and an episode guide.
It starts off dealing with the genesis of the series, and quite a bit of detail behind the first four years of the series. Details of why certain cast members left or were fired are covered, and some of the stories are quite entertaining.
It does have a heavy bias towards the first four years of the series, giving the later seasons short coverage.
It also only covers up through the seventh season (now the series is in it's 16th year).
The episode guide is a good analysis, and better than most of the same age. Although it is nothing as good as the guides you get out of Keith Topping.
All in all, worth it for the measly price I paid for it used. At a new cover price, given it's age, probably not.
The Ultimate Fan Guide.......2001-10-22
I am, without a doubt, THE BIGGEST "Law & Order" fan. I've seen every episode at least three times and I can tell you about all the actors and characters. I thought I knew everything there was to know about the show until I was given this book for a birthday gift. That's when I REALLY started learning about my favorite television show. Aside from the actor/character profiles, pictures, and run-down of all the villians, there's also the ever helpful episode guide that gives you a rundown of every episode ever aired! What more could you possibly ask for? Well, how about all the juicy gossip that went on behind the scenes. All the backstabbing, fighting, and quarrelling amoung the stars and the show's producers/writers are aired out for everyone to read. There's also some really nice cast/actor pictures for your enjoyment. I took deep interest in the Chris Noth pictures (he's such a doll!).
I totally recommend this book if, like me, you're a fan and you want to know EVERYTHING about the show. This book is a must-have for the ultimate "Law & Order" fan!

Customer Reviews:
Yes, useful for sybase starter.......2002-06-11
As an Oracle DBA, I simply want to find something to start, like Oracle's online Concept book or handful of other books out there. But there isn't anything in Sybase documentations nor many choices of books: DBA guide written like ref manual, replication guide however is OK to start. This book at least can get me started as one piece, more systematically, not one bit here and the other bit there. Although it is skin deep and probably should call Sybase Administrator 202, I still find it very useful to start with. Output and query results really helps me sit and read through the book, focuing, not having to type while you read
Very Useful.......2002-04-10
Unlike the other reviews I have read, I found the book to be useful and informative. Some of the newer features (eg, dbccdb) are covered in some detail while others are not. To be fair, the book isn't supposed to be just about brand new 12.5 features, rather an administration guide to 12.5. The difference may appear small, but it is large enough to commend the authors on a job well done.
The book does cover database administration of Sybase very well. My one complaint is that some of the formatting of figures is off, which might lead a newer DBA to be confused over some of the results. Nevertheless, I have found it an excellent reference manual, as well as a teaching tool, having discovered some things about ASE that I was not aware of. While online manuals are good, there's nothing better than having a book in front of you to read from cover to cover.
Beginner and Worthless Book.......2002-03-01
The problem with Sybase is you have to wait 5 or 6 years before a book is released unlike Oracle which releases books every month or so. After years of waiting we get this worthless book
There is nothing meaty in this book. The author did a much better job in the Sybase 11 book.
Read the Sybase manuals since that's your only source unfortunately because no publisher is excited about Sybase :-(
Good for starters, but not detailed.......2002-01-18
The book is good for starters/beginners who want to learn about sybase administartion, but it doesnt hightlight the new features or even explain/elaborate in detail the enhanced features on sybase 12.5 admin. For e.g., Configuration parameters are just listed and not explained. I had expected a lot from this long awaited book. Only wish the P&T book be good.
