      Book Description

`Competing Capitalisms is a superb collection of many of the most important articles of the last decade on the varieties of capitalism across regions of the industrialized world. Analytically informed, it provides the reader with insights into the sources of both stability and change while recognizing that diversity, if not divergence, is likely to continue to characterize contemporary capitalism.'

      -Peter Lange, Duke University

This authoritative collection brings together the leading contributions to the comparative study of forms of capitalism. An introductory essay presents the context in which these contributions developed, discusses the major issues raised by such comparative work, and suggests likely future developments.

Topics include: the major theoretical issues involved in analyzing different kinds of market economies; the key frameworks for comparing systems of economic organization, both historically and between societies; the analysis of the distinctive varieties of industrial capitalism that have developed in the Anglo-Saxon countries, Continental Europe and East Asia; and studies of globalization and the connections between types of market economies and varying forms of economic performance, particularly in terms of sectoral development and technical change.

The collection will be an indispensable reference source and will improve access to important papers that may not be available in many libraries.

            Book Description

Focusing on gender and the family, this erudite and innovative history reconsiders the origins of Egyptian nationalism and the revolution of 1919 by linking social changes in class and household structure to the politics of engagement with British colonial rule. Lisa Pollard deftly argues that the Egyptian state's modernizing projects in the nineteenth century reinforced ideals of monogamy and bourgeois domesticity among Egypt's elite classes and connected those ideals with political and economic success. At the same time, the British used domestic and personal practices such as polygamy, the harem, and the veiling of women to claim that the ruling classes had become corrupt and therefore to legitimize an open-ended tenure for themselves in Egypt. To rid themselves of British rule, bourgeois Egyptian nationalists constructed a familial-political culture that trained new generations of nationalists and used them to demonstrate to the British that it was time for the occupation to end. That culture was put to use in the 1919 Egyptian revolution, in which the reformed, bourgeois family was exhibited as the standard for "modern" Egypt.

              Book Description

'Janet Newman's ' Modernizing Governance' provides a comprehensive and thorough critique of contemporary public sector reforms. The book combines an impressive synthesis of theoretical perspectives with a deep understanding of the practice of public policy making and management. The contradictions within a shift to governance are clearly highlighted, and the notion of a third way is carefully deconstructed. This book is an important contribution to the literature, and will provide stimulating reading for academic researchers and students' - George Boyne, Professor of Public Sector Management, Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University

'The tale of Tony Blair and "government" is a complicated one which Janet Newman tells with insight and academic rigour….It deserves wide readership; it ought to pique the interest of all those concerned with the condition of British democracy' - David Walker, Analysis Editor and Leader Writer, The Guardian

The first comprehensive guide that explores the politics and policies of new Labour.

Has Labour's responses to the challenges and issues of the past 4 years, represented something radically different both in content and style from the Thatcher and Major years? Did it, in the language of this book, represent the emergence of a new form of governance in the UK?

              This book offers:

Critical insights into Labour's impact on:

§ the relationship between government and citizens

§ public services and their users

§ the state and civil society

Interpretations of core themes in Labour's policy agenda:

§ the Third Way and social democracy

              § modernising government

              § public service reform

              § joined-up government and partnership

§ public participation and democratic renewal

              § remaking civil society

Drawing on cultural and institutional theory, the author brings a fresh approach to the study of governance, politics and policy. She traces Labour's attempt to reinstall 'the social' in public and social policy by examining its use of the discourses of democracy, citizenship, community, social inclusion, partnership and public participation. The book analyses the implications of these new, and not so new, discourses for the practice of making and delivering policy, and the patterns of equality and diversity that they invoke. It also highlights the way in which managers, professionals and staff are responding to the new agenda, and the tensions and dilemmas produced in the process of institutional change.

4 out of 5 stars Business people can sometimes be funny if they try.......2001-10-26

Classier comedy writers like Gene Perret and Robert Orben have tried to help business people and public speakers over the past 20 years or more. If you make money with it, it is usually called "professional speaking," and there are a lot more speakers around than there are comedians. Also, the comedy in the clubs took on an angry tone, with more sex and toilet jokes than necessary. So, "OH, THAT'S WHAT YOU WRITE" could easily be surmised if people call themselves comedy writers...Business speakers can use help in being funny, and the second part of the book gives lists of jokes that may go over or may not, depending on the strength of your delivery. So, be sure to read the "Tips on Delivery" chapter. "Pitfalls of Humor" chapter makes some good points also. A comedian has more freedom to say what he pleases since if we like him, he is accepted as a buffoon from beginning to end. But in the more usual world of business, you basically have to have a serious message, which is interspersed with funny quips or stories. If you want to sell and make money, don't offend, be light. So Gene Perret has put together a useful guide for businessmen and speakers.

This book is informative. Too informative. It explains everything you ever wanted to know about MIDI and in the process explains very little. Much is due to the datedness of the examples but also the over-technical presentations.

I have a recording degree and have been working with MIDI for years and years, so I know a thing or two about MIDI, recording, etc. But this book, while highly championed for the educational landscape, tends to be one of those "assigned but never read" projects in academia. Within a few pages, the authors are extremely self-indulgent about the minutest details of hexidecimal code. It takes no time to become lost and discouraged, and completely misunderstand what MIDI is all about. The problem is, this book isn't written for programmers either. So who is the target audience? Well, everyone, really, and that's the disorganized, wandering tendency you're sifting through, as the book tries to make everyone happy. There are pages that are far too technical for all but the most geekish of programmers, and pages that are so boring and elementary for the most inexperienced of newbies. There's no clear separation as to where one is to go. Nomatter who you are, you'll be following along fine one minute, then stranded in the land of hex the next.

I find this book extremely self-satisfying and an insult to those who have a legitimate interest in truly learning the ways of MIDI. For the time it was written, it certainly left no stone unturned, but at times it drags on and on about a dead-and-buried point of non-interest, and other times it doesn't explain itself enough. It's intent is noble and unbelievable amounts of effort have gone into the world of MIDI but I can tell you one thing, if you know nothing about MIDI and really need to learn, this book will make you want to give up before you even get started. I can't think of the right demographic to recommend this to, so unfortunately I do not recommend it at all.

5 out of 5 stars A musician from Los Angeles.......2002-12-18

This is the clearest and most complete book on MIDI there is...and I've tried them all. The authors explain even the most tweaky tech stuff clearly, without repetition or ambiguity.

The book is essential because it doesn't focus on specific products--which go in and out of favor--but teaches you the capabilities of the technology itself. So whether you're shopping for a sequencer or an interface, you know what you need and how to evaluate the products out there now.

These guys have been writing about electronic music for years and they're two of the very best. They give you everything you need to work effectively with MIDI.

                      5 out of 5 stars Still a great reference........2002-04-24

Although it's showing its age, and it doesn't cover a lot of new developments like sound cards and virtual synths, this is still an extremely valuable book for anyone who wants to understand what MIDI is all about. In this age of loops, samples, and digital everything, MIDI doesn't have the high profile it used to, but it's still in almost universal use by musicians and studios -- even by people who don't know they're using it -- and a good technical understanding of it is really important. This book is still the best source around for that kind of information, so it's no surprise that dozens of college-level courses use it as a standard text. The writing is clear, concise, and often funny -- these guys are two of the best and most experienced writers in the business. You want to know about MIDI? Get this book.

                      1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2002-02-19

Totally outdated, this work teaches nothing. Rambling, disorganized and often repetitive, the authors do not know how to write at all. Totally focused on a few software titles, the Apple platform, and having no information on MIDI for internal sound cards, the book is worthless to current readers.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE reference work for MIDI users of all kinds........1998-07-12

MIDI For The Professional, now in its second edition, is the standard textbook for college-level courses in MIDI in the US and abroad. It has received rave reviews Keyboard, the Electronic Music Foundation, the IMA Newsletter, Piano & Keyboard magazine, and many other publications. For the serious MIDI user--performer, composer, programmer, multimedia author, equipment designer--there is no better source of information. Paul Lehrman is one of the best-known authors and teachers in the electronic music and pro audio fields (and is editor of Mix magazine's Web site) and Tim Tully, former editor of Electronic Musician magazine and technical editor of New Media, writes for EQ, Videography, and Pro Sound News, and plays a mean tenor.

                            Book Description

The United States has always imagined that its identity as a nation is insulated from violent interventions abroad, as if a line between domestic and foreign affairs could be neatly drawn. Yet this book argues that such a distinction, so obviously impracticable in our own global era, has been illusory at least since the war with Mexico in the mid-nineteenth century and the later wars against Spain, Cuba, and the Philippines. In this book, Amy Kaplan shows how U.S. imperialism--from "Manifest Destiny" to the "American Century"--has profoundly shaped key elements of American culture at home, and how the struggle for power over foreign peoples and places has disrupted the quest for domestic order.

The neatly ordered kitchen in Catherine Beecher's household manual may seem remote from the battlefields of Mexico in 1846, just as Mark Twain's Mississippi may seem distant from Honolulu in 1866, or W. E. B. Du Bois's reports of the East St. Louis Race Riot from the colonization of Africa in 1917. But, as this book reveals, such apparently disparate locations are cast into jarring proximity by imperial expansion. In literature, journalism, film, political speeches, and legal documents, Kaplan traces the undeniable connections between American efforts to quell anarchy abroad and the eruption of such anarchy at the heart of the empire.

4 out of 5 stars Installing the Circuits of Empire.......2003-05-03

In THE ANARCHY OF EMPIRE IN THE MAKING OF US CULTURE Ms. Kaplan has put together a number of illuminating readings of selected American texts as a way to explore the beginnings of empire, its expression in the U.S. in the mid to late 19th century. Her sources range from women's magazine's such as Harper's, works by Twain and W.E.B. du Bois, through "Birth of a Nation" to Welle's "Citizen Kane." She shows how the boundaries of empire were drawn, and how no one was were untouched by its discourse whether they recognized its contours or not.

She begins with a discussion of Mark Twain's first real assignment as a newspaperman: writing "letters" from Hawaii that were published in a San Francisco newspaper intended to promote the island to mainland businessmen and settlers. These letters and his observations later formed the basis of his first lectures and thus served as the springboard to his later career as a novelist. Twain, she notes, in his personal letters to friends and family is drawn to and repelled by the exotic, anxious to witness the rites of the dying Hawaiian people before they pass from history, and at the same time scandalized by their cultural practices, such as their lascivious dancing. Known generally now as an anti-colonialist because of an article he wrote during the Spanish American War(s), she demonstrates how he, knowingly, and with no little anxiety, early on recognized he was implicated in the colonial project. On the sea voyage to Hawaii, for instance, he comes down with a bad cold, and mordantly writes to a friend that the illness he bears may kill off a few more thousand more Hawaiians. Kaplan maintains that Twain's exposure to empire in the color line in Hawaii and the exploitation of that people, (a quite different experience from how he experienced the color line in Missouri), laid the foundation for his later perspective and production of "Huckleberry Finn" some twenty years later.

Other key readings include the first full-length films produced during the "Spanish-American War Mania" when documentary footage of U.S. soldiers was mixed with some staged battles and scripted domestic scenes drew huge audiences to the movies. She suggests that the public happily participated in the jingoistic pursuit of empire through these films, and that these productions laid the groundwork for not just the war movie genre, but the full-length film. Prior to these movies, shorts were the order of the day. She notes these films influenced the structure and visual imagery of "The Birth of a Nation" in 1915, which, if you haven't seen it recently, presents African Americans as the lords of misrule in the American South. Encapsulated in all these cultural productions are the portrayals of non-white men as stupid, power-crazed savages who in their grab at power, attempt to deflower the flower of the white womanhood, while non-white women are seen as exotic and erotically destabilizing. The Birth of a Nation casts the Klan as heroic figures who must preserve civilization through lynching, terror and mayhem. The Rough Riders were seen as masculine white heroes who swept away the decadent vestiges of a cruel empire, freeing Filipinos and Cubans who as non-whites and subjugated peoples could not understand or appreciate the boon of freedom that had been conferred upon them.

Orson Welle's "Citizen Kane," the fictionalized life of Henry Luce, is also examined as critique of the circuits of imperial power. She notes that it is one of the few films that even touches on the Spanish American War as a subject, but that this war was central to Luce's creation of his own media empire. Making the point that the yellow press grew to prominence during this era, repeating the story that Hearst started the war in Cuba to sell newspapers, she shows how the media supported the drive toward empire, and in their cultural productions assigned roles to citizens.

Her larger point is that empire is not a one way street, but rather is complex circuit through which the dreams of the imperial power are modified and altered through contact with the Other. Through her examination of W.E. DuBois, she summarizes his view that WWI was not centered in a dispute between European powers but that it grew out of Africa. By decentering the standard narrative, he rewrites the conflict as the history as growing out of the contact of Europe with Africa. This chapter nicely resonates with her introduction She relates through a Supreme Court decision how Puerto Rico was both a possession, and not a possession, holding it through law at arm's length -- a place in which it still resides, in a limbo as both dependent and quasi-independent. A similar judgment was made during the 1830s by the Supreme Court when they ruled that the Cherokee was not a nation in the strict sense, but a dependent population so that they could be uprooted and sent forth on the Trail of Tears. (See the book "1831" Year of Eclipse" by Louis Masur for the history behind that similarly ambiguous decision.

This is a thoughtful book to which full justice cannot be given in a short review. Her location of the Spanish American War as a key node in America's consolidation of its colonial aspirations is important and convincingly done. As a chapter in history, the Spanish American War(s) has always been dismissed as a minor episode, portrayed as the U.S. trying on the role of the colonizer during the colonial era's last gasp, an activity for which as a democracy it was ill suited. What Kaplan shows is that it was a rehearsal for a different kind of imperialism, the stimulation of the American middle-class through narratives of power as presented through the media, and the later colonization of the world through the globalization construct put forth under the rubric of democracy and free trade.

Hillary Duff does rock and this book does so aswell rock, i am a huge fan of Hillary Duff, and this is the best book ever written about her. It's easy to read too.

                              4 out of 5 stars It's great...........2005-08-20

There have been many biographies about Hilary Duff lately, and I must say that this one is very good. It doesn't exactly dive into the depths of her life too much (it does give you some basic autobiographical information, however), but there is a lot of great information about her movies, singing, album, and possible future. Plus, there are tons of great-looking glossy photographs that will satisfy any devoted Hilary Duff fan. The style is sophisticated and written well, but not in an annoying teenybopper-ish way. Whether you're a huge fan or just want to read more about Hilary with some good pictures, this is a fabulous book.

This book is absolutely rocks! The cover is the coolest picture I have ever seen of Hil! I wish there was a way to buy a print of the cover as a poster. I have Hilary Duff's 2005 calendar, which has some rad pictures, but this cover shot totally rules. Great book and lots of awesome photos.

4 out of 5 stars The IT Payoff Review.......2007-02-20

Easy to read book. Get's straight to the point. However, the case studies are out of date. A new, updated version is needed!

4 out of 5 stars The IT Payoff: Measuring the Buiness Value of Information Technology Investments.......2006-11-10

Practical methodogy was introduced, it provides specific templates, metrics, and tools for making funding and IT investment decisions. It should be recommended reading for IT executives and managers.

                              5 out of 5 stars The book is great however . . . . ........2005-05-07

The content appears to be good however I made the mistake of buying the digital e-book version without knowing that there is a form of protection that doesn't permit printing to paper.

The only reason I purchased it in this format was I needed it very quickly (I'm in Australia) for an assignment due this week so I can PRINT the book out, read it now and while travelling to and from work.

What a bloody shame. Amazon - why don't you highlight the above fact at least against all applicable e-books you sell so that the customer knows before he/she splurges any money instead of hiding it in a help or FAQ file. Last time I'll buy an ebook from here or anywhere where I can't print it out.

2 out of 5 stars Great articulation of issues, poor analysis of solutions.......2003-10-30

I have trouble in understanding how this book got such positive reviews. I found it to provide a very eloquent and succinct description of the issues, but nothing very insightful in terms of solution, or recommendations. The model they present is obvious to the point of uselessness, and does not offer any real help in how to evaluate investments more effectively. Specifically what is missing for me is that the authors are still tied to the world where the IT project deliverers take no responsibility for the business (financial) outcome of their work. What I'm looking for is a proposal for model of IT projects that brings the business value into the heart of the project methodology, rather than as a parallel exercise.

In summary the book is painfully academic with fleeting references to a small number of case studies. This is a book that brings nice introduction to the issues for a student, but is of no value to the practitioner. This is an important area and it deserves more.

                              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Work.......2003-07-23

Clearly written, conveys the essence of making IT worthwhile. This book makes be believe in the long term promise of IT.

I particularly like the practical applications and references to successful methods. This book provides well grounded and leading edge, yet practical, methods to improve IT returns.

Overall, this book gives a clear road to increasing the value of the IT investment. Each organization should weigh which aspects to apply in its practices.

The main method is the age-old concept of measure what you want to manage. The book builds extensively on this concept and provides clear direction.

Although the manage by facts and measure, measure, measure themes are common in business thought, the proper application to the issues in corporate IT are insightful.

The pedigree and background of the authors is impressive. Combined with their experience and demonstrated rigour, this gives the book a basis of actionable credibility.

I highly recommend this book to anyone responsible for IT outcomes and return on IT investment.
