Beyond good governance.......2003-06-20

There is not a single African country that did not attempt public sector reforms in the 1990s. Governments no longer see themselves as sole suppliers of social services, frequently opting for partnerships with the private sector. Efficiency and choice have entered the language of the planning and implementation units of Africa's line ministries, while privatization is no longer the controversial subject it was a decade ago. There have also been moves towards more open and democratic governments.
This book looks at the extent to which reforms undertaken in Sub-Saharan Africa in recent years have enhanced institutional capacities across the breadth of government. To what extent have reforms been internalized and defended by governments? The authors also look specifically at the impact of public sector reforms on these economies and pose the question whether `ownership' can be attained when countries continue to be heavily dependent on external support.
The volume is presented in three parts. The first focuses on the issue of reform ownership; on the issues of governance, the political economy of reform ownership, and the contradictions inherent in using aid as an instrument for enhancing domestic reform ownership. Part two examines the nature of incentives in the African civil service and the reforms undertaken in recent years to raise public sector efficiency in Africa. The third part discusses issues related to institutional capabilities in Africa and how they have been affected by the reforms undertaken in the 1990s, including privatization and movement towards political pluralism.
Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa has undertaken research on many African countries and published widely on issues related to growth, economic adjustment, and poverty reduction. Formerly an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, he is now attached to the IMF's Independent Evaluation Office in Washington, DC. During 2000-1, he directed the project on Institutional Capabilities, Reform Ownership and Development in sub-Saharan Africa at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER) in Helsinki.

Essential reference.......2001-10-02

This is the descendant of the Guinness chart books and contains, for the first time ever, singles and albums (and EPs from a separate chart) together in one volume. Each artist has his/her/their singles, EPs, and albums listed in chronological order along with label, chart debut date, peak, and weeks on chart. Each re-entry onto the chart is noted separately. The index of titles is comprehensive and there is, of course, a chronological recap of number ones. Trivia fanatics will miss the pages of chart oddities that appeared at the back of the Guinness books, but that's a small quibble, since much chart trivia has been stuffed into the main listings (notes under the chart titles, etc.). An essential reference.

Are the authors lazy or dishonest?.......2001-07-04

This book is so filled with mistakes that it boggles the mind. Who did the fact checking? The authors claim that the modern Christian right got most of their ideas from Hitler! The authors are either totally ignorant of American history or so biased that they will not be honest. This book is easily the most incorrect and biased account I have ever read. While I share their dislike for the Right wing, their exagerations only make things worse. It could have been an interesting book, but they tried to stretch things too far.

A book that attacks the Right but ignores the Left Extremist.......1999-09-28

The book gives an adequate view of Right Wing Radicals and rightly warns us about some views not consistent in a Freedom System of free speech. However, it ignores its own bias and failure to research where much of the disinformation and racial tensions and even bombings came from leftists extremists as outline in a book that details KGB Files in The Sword and the Shield. In the end, I have concluded that this book is nothing more than an attempt to counter conservative Democrats and moderate Republicans agenda meant for a responsible and reliable middle americans. The extremes seldom are right anytime and this books only attacks one side so the book itself is an extreme attack exactly what they are trying to stop, prevent or make people think. I think it is a sham for this reason along with many reviews whom I respect but question.

The myth of the liberal media.......1999-09-14

Though the authors occasionally overstate their case, this book serves as a useful counterbalance to the extreme right-wing commentators that have popped up on the radio. While these commentators set up a mythic "liberal media" as a strawman, the fact is that the media has become increasingly conservative over the past two decades. This book adds a much-needed sense of balance to the Limbaughs and Schlessingers who try to claim the center for their right-wing agenda.

It's about time!.......1999-09-13

For far too long, the loudmouths and bullies of radical right-wing talk radio have dominated the political dialog in this country. The "liberal" left has been disenfranchised to a point of powerlessness. The result is the complete control of all media by a few mega-corporations, which ironically limits the exercise of individual rights and free speech. The only real problem with this book is that it may be too little too late. The response by the demagogues of the right proves the point- their intolerance of any point of view but their own. Keith and Hilliard have done us a great service- a must-read for any and all who still care about free speech.

Excellent Intro to the 'World' of Radio.......2006-02-24

As an former DJ, I've wondered about the state of radio in this day and age. Michael Keith has done an excellent job of capturing it with this book. Mr Keith does a great job of describing radio's history, from its humble beginnings to today's world of culture of deregulation and consolidation, as well as also describing all the various departments and jobs within a station. I wish there'd been a book like this around when I was an announcer.

There are chapters devoted to programming (and various formats), sales, news, and research (always important facets that folk don't always think about), promotion, commercial production, even one on engineering (let us never forget the job the sometimes underappreciated engineers perform).

If you want to get into radio broadcasting or (like me) have an interest in the field and where it's headed you need to get this book.

The coverage of this topic is complete and then some in this edition. You want to know about radio? This incomparable book will tell you all you need to know. First rate.

Great Introduction to Radio.......2003-11-15

If you want to know what the radio industry is all about read this book. It is written by a veteran in the field who has published extensively on the subject, presented research at conferences, and worked in the radio business before entering academe. Dr. Keith knows the business.

He traces trends and provides historical perspective on how things came to be as they are. Station managers would find this to be a useful resource manual. There are all kinds of subjects covered that they would face on a daily basis.

I recommend this book. I've used it in teaching at the university level over the years. Student feedback has been positive.

Interested in Radio? You Need This.......2000-08-03

I had a slight interest in radio before enrolling in a class at the University of Southern California. One day, I went to the bookstore to get my course books early and picked this one up. It's a true eye-opener and such a good reference text. If you have any desire to learn about radio in any facet at all, pick this one up - you won't regret it.

HANDS ON HOME STUDY.......2006-12-03

Back in 98 I took a datanetworking course and the author, Dave Prowse, was my instructor. This course concentrated on hands on skills. Wiring, network design and building, server installations, troubleshooting, the knowledge needed to do the job. This book brings Daves hands on approach home and is a good companion for anyone considering a home network lab.

I've just passed my CompTIA Network+ certification using this book and other sources.

David Prowse's Network+ Lab Manual provides some great exercises, providing real experience required for understanding the topics covered by the Network+ exam.

The book also gives clear and concise summaries of all the important areas of the exam, including the OSI model; Commonly used TCP/IP ports and network cabling types.

Great Book! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone taking the Network+ certification.

Passed the exam, book helped me a lot!.......2006-02-10

Just passed the Net+ exam. I found this book through a link on the website www.technicalblog.com. While going through the labs in the book, I did have a few questions about some of the step by step instructions. They were answered quickly by the author on the above website. I also got some valuable information from other moderators on the sites bulletin board.
I didn't really understand VPNs until going through the labs in this book. The questions (while I wish there was more) were very helpful as well.

Great Book.......2005-11-15

I actually took the Net + Class with David Prowse this past year, the class was very amazing and then when I was studying for the test, his new book came out and it was like putting the finishing touches for me. It answered all my questions and got me ready for the test. I passed the test easily, thanks to Dave's teachings and his book.

If you want to pass the test, you must study first and then practice everything on a real network, this book can be a great help when you try to actually do what you learn in class.

Excellent resource.......2005-10-05

This book is by far the best cert book I have ever read. It's extremely informative and presents the information in a manner that is easy to understand and learn. Mr Prowse goes so far as to offer up his techblog for assistance with any issues you may come across while reading the text and and doing the labs. Also, he is extremely helpful and responsive when you do need a questions answered.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to prepare for the Network+ exam.
