The French diction 'bible' Singing in French!.......2003-11-16
The book Singing in French has been my close friend for many years. In fact, I have just bought a new one since my first one fell apart from constant use! The information presented here is first-class with no detail left unattended. It remains (since 1979) THE major book on French diction for classical singers. Thomas Grubb explains everything in detail so clearly. He knows from experience what a singer's reaction will be and he is able to address that at the outset.Thomas Grubb is not only an expert on French diction, but also a wonderful pianist, vocal coach and an impeccable artist. This book is a must read! Grubb includes detailed repertoire for each category of voice. To singers, this is simply a French diction bible!
Please see information below........1999-10-25
This is Thomas Grubb himself supplying up-dated information on my book. It is presently available through PRENTICE HALL, Inc., 240 Frisch Court, Paramus, NJ 07652 at l-800-766-849l (FAX: 20l-909-6275). It in listed there under Macmillan Library Reference/Schirmer. And I no longer teach at the Manhattan School. Since l985 I have been on the faculty of The Juilliard School and since l984 at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.

Very inspiring, if not completely detailed.......2007-09-05
I loved this book because it has so many pictures. It is most interesting to see aspects of the rides that you might not get to view by visiting the park. The enthusiasm of this book is inspiring for anyone who is interested in theme park design. It does not get into anthing too technical, or show you what an Imagineer does from day to day on a regular basis. I would reccomend this book if you are interested in seeing Disneyland from another angle or if you want to be a theme park designer. It is a very good book if you aren't looking for technical advice, just to have fun and get excited!
Spectacular Book!!.......2007-07-11
Fabulous book!! Framable quality pages and chock FULL of amazing images. Details the making of films and has frame by frame development by the Imagineers. If the book seems a little spendy, it is. And it is worth it. Not just a coffee table book. You will page through it over and over again and find new things each time!
I admit it..........2007-04-02
...I didn't realize that Imagineering was going to be exclusively based on the Disney theme parks. I was... well, more than a little disappointed when I opened it up and looked for the many illustrations and stuff about the making of the movies, that I confess I thought would be there. The book in itself was nicely put together, and DOES look attractive, in terms of what was in there. I can clearly see why anyone would greatly enjoy it. Nevertheless, in my case it sits collecting dust on my shelf.
I blame myself: I should have looked just a little deeper in what the book was going to be about, before purchasing it. A technical explanation of the process of the theme parks' creation was... uh, boring. *laugh*
great book for the Disney fan.......2006-11-10
This is a beautiful informative book. My kids just enjoy looking at the pictures from their favorite movies and the theme parks. The accompanying stories are interesting and full of fun facts. So much is written about the imagineers it's nice to find one book that is first hand accounts and backgroundn info. If you've ever visited WDW or Disneyland this book gives you a whole new insight into what went into creating these magical places.
Any Imagineering Enthusiast Needs this Book.......2005-12-01
Anyone who has ever dreamed of being an imagineer needs this book. It has interesting construction photographs and artist renderings, however it doesn't have as much in depth and truly new information as I hoped it would. Overall, worth the money.
Book Description
She opened for jazz great Billie Holliday, clowned with Phil Silvers in Broadway's "Top Banana", shared an upper berth with Marilyn Monroe in "Some Like It Hot", flirted with Jack Lemmon in Irma "La Douce" and murdered the same man over and over again on "The Outer Limits." Her extensive TV credits include "Surfside Six," "Bonanza," "The Untouchables," "Gunsmoke," "The Big Valley," "Hart to Hart," "Batman," and "Bewitched," just to name a few.
In her dream role, Gene Roddenberry beamed her aboard the Starship Enterprise as Yeoman Janice Rand for the original "Star Trek" series. But a terrifying sexual assault on the studio lot and her lifelong feelings of emptiness and isolation would soon combine to turn her starry dream into a nightmare.
"I had a hole in my gut with the wind blowing through. I was in pain. I craved validation. And I looked for solace in alcohol, drugs and sex."
Whitney attributes this event with triggering the most lengthy and severe bout of her decades-long addiction to drugs, alcohol and sex. Clean, sober and a born again messianic Jew, Whitney recalls with frankness, warmth and humor her life-long battle to be a "good girl," and her hunger for a sense of belonging and acceptance.
"People ask if this isn't embarrassing to talk about, and well, yes, at least it was in the beginning. But I learned something very important. You're as sick as your secrets. Once a secret isn't a secret anymore, it loses its power over you."
Customer Reviews:
The Longest Recovery.......2006-09-07
It would be easy to ignore "The Longest Trek" as perhaps being the least significant of Trek biographies, but that would be a mistake. Yes, it's a biography of a minor original Trek actress who lasted only one season and in a rather "fifth wheel" role at that, but fortunately for readers the stories of Grace's pre-Trek Hollywood days are damningly interesting, while her post-Trek days are interestingly damning.
As has been noted elsewhere while the book is an autobiography, its main purpose is to serve as a mea culpa for all the disservices done to her friends, lovers, self and career due to alcoholism. But not just alcoholism - in a broader sense Grace suffers from an addictive personality, which when combined with a rather naïve outlook serves only to reinforce her problem. These issues alone could have resulted in an extremely ponderous book on recovery and religious conversion (is Grace simply trading one addiction for another?) but fortunately it's an interesting trip that probably would not have been written if not for the fact that Grace has little to lose by doing so.
Grace is not a deep thinker - she tends to stop analyzing things once she comes up with a rationale that fits the way she'd like them to be, and when it comes to her understanding of other people's motivations, of religion, of cause-and-effect... the simplest explanation is often the chosen one. One can only consider that "The Executive" was already aware that she was to be written out of the series before making his detestable (re-)casting couch pass, that the writers were never quite sure what to do with the character of Janice Rand, and that her lengthy grudge against Roddenberry for not sticking up for her is the main motivation for the rather hypocritical character-assassination chapter where Grace the Sexually Unfaithful Alcoholic Converted Jewish Atheist Turned Dry Born Again Christian lambastes Gene for being a secular humanist in an open marriage. Oh, the irony.
It's best to stop here - much more could be said, but my main thrust in writing all this is to hope that readers will not be scared off by the religious or recovery overtones and enjoy the book. I would have liked to have read more about working with the rest of the Trek cast (only Spock & Kirk receive much mention) but it's fascinating reading nonetheless.
A study in addiction.......2006-03-02
Grace Lee Whitney writes this book for "Star Trek" fans, certainly, but what she says to addicts -- and those whose lives are affected by them -- is far more powerful. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Whitney and reviewing this autobiography for The Detroit News when the book was first released. I was struck by her graciousness and kindness, but I was also struck by the gritty strength she conveys in this book. Frankly describing incidents like her hit-and-run on Grand River Avenue in Detroit, and her guarding the bathroom door of a Chicago club while the heroin-addicted Billie Holiday was getting shot-up inside, she just puts it out there, none too concerned what her cult-TV fans will think of her. You've got to appreciate that. And it's pretty clear, throughout the book, that her motives are not to make herself look good, or bad, but to shine a light on the effects of a gruesome and very common illness.
the lady deserves an editor.......2006-01-09
Grace Lee Whitney sounds like a warm, charming, witty, delightful person, and I enjoyed her cautionary tale of substance abuse in the life of a working film actress (not a "star"). In addition, it was great to read a female account of the Star Trek phenomenon NOT written by a woman hell- (or heaven!) bent on proving she is a better man than any or all the men in the known universe.
I think Ms. Whitney was mis-served by her publisher or, perhaps, her collaborator, however. Her book is choppy, repetitive, and contains some misstatements. (Was the character's name "Uhura" or "Uhuru"? How many kids does Shatner have?) A good editor or ghost writer could have limited the meandering, tightened the focus, fact-checked, and improved some of the diction without losing the author's own voice. This is not a criticism of the author (who is a professional actress, not a professional writer) but of the people who printed the book. It is insulting to literate readers to find the equivalent of the following sentence on virtually every page of this book: "I was a green kid wearing bobby sox with my high-heeled shoes, taking it all in with my youthful fascination." (p. 29) (No, I did not red-pencil the book as I read--I opened to a random page to cull that example.)
I'm writing this because Ms. Whitney has points to make about religion and the human spirit that risk getting lost beneath the bad prose. Many educated (perhaps over-educated) people who might benefit from her points will, sadly, refuse even to consider them as they are written; these are the people who know they know everything and turn down their noses on the literary efforts even of C. S. Lewis and Thomas Merton. There is definitely a sharp mind and an excellent psychologist within Grace Lee Whitney, as are shown in her analysis of Gene Rodenberry and some of her throw-away points (such as the religious nature of Star Trek to some of its fans). By her own account she is a person with a lot of energy and perseverence. She deserved the help of someone who could have produced a book that might have transcended both the "Star Trek" and the "Twelve Step" genres.
What a Trek!.......2005-03-06
Grace Lee Whitney was a large part of Star Trek in the beginning and I always wondered why she just disappeared from the series..Well, this very insightful autobiography tells you, along with other very interesting anecdotes about her involvement with the series. Yeoman Rand was an interesting character and it would have been neat to see where Grace would have taken this character if she had been allowed to continue in the role.
It's quite revealing how Grace plunged into the depths of alcoholism and other addictions and how she literally "ruined" her career in Hollywood with a bad reputation. However, it's quite inspiring to read how she pulled herself out of this hole and gradually came in touch with her religion and the realization that she needed to change her aberrant behavior and start respecting herself again..For anyone who has experienced great lows in their life, they should read this book and be inspired!
Of all the autobiographies written by former castmembers this is the one that is most heartbreaking..however it does have a happy ending! For all you Trekkies out there this is a must read!!
Great book. Great story. Great lady. However. . ........2004-07-31
I'm a life-long fan of the original Trek series. I had the hugest crush on Yeoman Rand since my childhood. I've always wanted to hear Ms. Whitney's story and clear up all the rumors I heard in the 70's about the reasons she left Trek and what really happened to her afterwards. This book clears it all up. It was also interesting to hear about all the movies and celebrities she's worked with, pre & post Trek.
The thing I didn't like about this book was all the religious ranting she goes off on. I sympathize for Grace's alcoholism, but she must have really gotten brainwashed by this particular group of AA religious folks. She seems to blame herself for everything that went wrong in her life, before and after alcohol-- even getting raped! She even calls herself an alcoholic when she *stopped* drinking for 8 years in the 70's! Hell, every chapter ends with "this is what alcoholics do". It was so sad to hear her self-loathing rants. This book often sounds like it's written by a cult member. And I think it was. Especially since she claims to be a "Jewish Christian". Figure that one out.
I will never ever stop being a fan of Grace Lee Whitney's. She's an extraordinary woman. She's 73 years old now and is still a very attractive woman. But as an atheist, it was hard for me to read this book. But if you can get past the self-loathing and religious dribble, you'll enjoy it.

A friend of salespeople and customer service representatives everywhere, ACT! 2000 does a great job of managing lots of names and their associated bits of contact information. ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies realizes that most people don't want to spend their days running ACT!--they just want to know that Ruth Ann Krinklemeyer needs a follow-up call (at this number right here) on the 23rd. Because of this, the book jumps right to the simplest ways of getting contact information into an ACT! database and then getting it back out on demand. Later chapters deal with advanced database queries and Internet integration, but author Jeffrey J. Mayer has organized the first part of this book with the knowledge that most readers will spend a lot of time there.
ACT! 2000 for Windows for Dummies employs the vintage Dummies writing and organizational style, complete with explicit how-to procedures and more than a few dopey jokes. You probably know from other books whether you like the approach. Generally, it works well as straight documentation of the program's features (especially the relatively basic ones) and holds up reasonably well when you want to do something that falls outside the realm of the normal. This book gives you the grounding you need to get practically all ACT! 2000 jobs done. Ms. Krinklemeyer will get her call. --David Wall
Topics covered: Entering contacts; extracting information; defining custom fields; using list views; performing advanced queries; using the calendar and task list features; and using ACT! as an e-mail, fax, and letter-writing platform.

ACT! 2000 a must for every user........2001-12-10
ACT! 2000 the software is an excellent product and I use it 2 or three times a day. ACT! 2000 for Dummies is extremely helpful and very entertaining. I learned alot from ACT! for Dummies. The first version of ACT! for Dummies was well written and ACT! 2000 for Dummies is even better. I bought it three or four years ago when I upgraded my software to ACT! 2000 and I still keep it handy and refer to it for all my ACT questions and how too's. I have also told everyone who uses ACT! 2000 to buy their own copy and keep it close by. TG
ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies vs. Act! 2000 User's Guide.......2000-12-15
I found this manual no more helpful than the User's Guide provided with ACT! 2000. In my opinion, this "Dummies" book is written on the same level as the User's Guide, and really does not speak to the "dummy" or new user any more clearly or understandably than the ACT! 2000 User's Guide does. In fact, I found Mr. Mayer's book confusing at times and would turn to the User's Guide for clarification. I wish I had read some of the Amazon reviews before purchasing Mr. Mayer's book. Had I known what I know now, I would not have purchased ACT! 2000 For Windows For Dummies but would have saved myself time, study, and money by simply using the ACT! 2000 User's Guide.
Good for beginners.......2000-05-16
This book covers a large amount of information very quickly. As a more advanced user of ACT!, I found most of the topics too superficial. However, my users frequently find the book very helpful in assisting them with basic tasks in ACT!. I found the constant references to the author's classes and other books somewhat annoying after the first several.
An abberation in the Dummies series.......2000-05-11
I have great affection for the unfortunately-titled Dummies series. Typically they combine a very digestible series of easily read lessons, which teach rather more than the title suggests. And if I find the writing style cloying, with the mandatory joke per page, I at least give them credit for trying to ease the worried reader's misgivings.
ACT is notorious in clerical office worker circles as being a daunting bear to learn really well. The instruction manuals make one think that one could spend the same amount of time learning C++ or rocket science. Typically that's when someone like me turns to a Dummies book.
I cannot fault the book for the very complete information it provides. It does it as well, or better, than any other complete manual I've seen. What disappoints is the fact that the information here makes the subject no less daunting than any of the other complete manuals.
It becomes almost sad when the reader realizes by the middle of the second chapter, that the writer is uniquely colorless and lacking any inate sense of humor -- and his attempts at it strike one as pathetic. The easy digestibility one expects from a Dummies book is completely absent. I still felt like I'd make a better living if I spent the time learning rocket science. The Dummies books on Excel, or A+ Certification -- not lightweight subjects -- make ACT appear like the height of esoteric knowledge by comparison.
This is a very fine manual, and I learned alot from it. ...
ACT!2000 Training.......2000-05-08
ACT!2000 for Windows for Dummies was the basis of lesson plans I developed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced ACT!2000 classes. Jeff has a knack for uncomplicating a feature-rich piece of software. He literally hand carries users through the program and enables them to take advantage of the best Personal Information Manager on the market.
(Phil Ardussi is a consultant in NT4.0 installations and has been an enthusiastic ACT! user for over five years.)
