Make no mistake: cooking is big business. Top chefs often earn six-figure incomes, many achieve celebrity status (think Julia Child, Wolfgang Puck, or James Beard), and have the good fortune to work in a field that rewards creativity, innovation, and hard work. But great chefs are made, not born, and for many, the first step up the culinary career ladder is cooking school. Since 1989, the number of cooking programs has increased 150 percent, and the demand for cooking professionals continues to outstrip the supply. The Guide to Cooking Schools 1998 can help aspiring chefs choose exactly the right program to suit their needs and goals.
The book is divided between career/professional programs and recreational cooking schools. There are also listings for national apprenticeships, wine courses, and professional organizations; there's even an index of recommended reading. At the beginning of The Guide to Cooking Schools 1998 you'll find a brief checklist of points to consider when choosing a particular program. The actual listings, though brief, are packed with information on tuition, length of programs, student-to-teacher ratios, percentages of students who find employment, and more. This guide to culinary programs will be useful to readers considering a career in cooking as well as to those just looking for a fun vacation alternative.
Book Description
The only comprehensive, international resource of its kind, published annually and recommended by leading food and wine publications and organizations. Contains detailed descriptions of more than 1,000 schools, colleges, culinary apprenticeships, cooking vacations, wine courses, and food and wine organizations worldwide. The 417-page 2001 (13th annual) edition contains detailed descriptions of 441 career and professional programs and 637 recreational programs worldwide, 84 culinary apprenticeships, 104 wine appreciation courses, and 32 food and wine organizations. "The Bible" according to The New York Times, The Guide is recommended by The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, and every leading food publication, including Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Fine Cooking, Cooking Light, & Cook's Illustrated.

A good place to start looking.......2000-11-11
This book is a good refernce for anyone considering a culinary education, but most of the information can be found elsewhere and the information provided made it dificult to evaluate the actual quality of the school. Still, it is a good starting place and it's nice to have all this information in one place. Also, some good listings in the appendix of cost breakdown.
It's all here-and on the web........2000-05-24
This book is a useful reference tool, and not much more. Besides, nearly all the information in it is available on the web. So why pay? The book provides the standard stats on cooking schools - cost, class size, start dates - etc. But a table listing all of these data would be great.
Easy-to-use, comprehensive resource.......2000-02-13
Great reference for anyone considering a career as a chef or who wants to take a cooking vacation. Detailed, yet concise, descriptions of hundreds of programs, mostly in the U.S. & Europe. Well organized and indexed. Not much info about programs in South America, though.

Just what I was looking for!.......2001-02-20
This book is an excellent source of information for any cook looking for schools or educational programs, whether at the professional level or just for fun. Information is separated by Career/Professional Programs versus Recreational Programs and is indexed by state and country. It includes costs and contact information. Only additional piece of information I would have liked would have been assessments or recommendations on quality of the programs offered.
Book Description
This book challenges the popular thesis of a downward trend in the viability of welfare states in competitive market economies. With approaches ranging from historical case studies to cross-national analyses, the contributors explore various aspects of the relationships between welfare states, industrial relations, financial government and production systems.

I can.......2004-07-16
I can twirl my curly locks without holy rollers. I just use my index finger and twirl while I drive, fiddle my taxes, watch my favourite Tv program, listen to my Neil Diamond albums or if I'm just cutting off a length.
Its such a waste buying products that replace natures way.

Book Description
having introduced the world to LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, DMX, and Jay-Z, the label formed by hustler-incarnate Russell Simmons and A & R maverick Rick Rubin has now successfully marketed what was a ghetto phenomenon into the most pervasive youth culture of the late 20th century. This book documents the growth of Def Jam from humble origins to its current status as the pre-eminent black music label of the 80's and 90's.
Customer Reviews:
Off the hook, read this book.......2002-07-03
Alex Ogg did a superb job in his book on Russel Simmons and Rick Rubin, founders of the record label, "Def Jam". Ogg gave the men who launched the careers of Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and other stars of hip hop their props. While I found it was an insightful read, I discovered that homorous touches and memorable moments abound throughout the book. Since I am an fan of the Beastie Boys, I enjoyed the early part of the book which dealt with the rap/rock phenomenon in the 1980's, although I was a bit dissapointed that Ogg didn't delve more deeply into how Rubin got to be friends and roomates with Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock of Beastie-Boy fame.) Nevertheless, Alex Ogg, a gifted writer, knows how to put together a good Def Jam history book, and without a doubt loves hip-hop very much.
Book Description
This wide-ranging cultural history explores the expression of Bolshevik Party ideology through the lens of landscape, or, more broadly, space. Portrayed in visual images and words, the landscape played a vital role in expressing and promoting ideology in the former Soviet Union during the Stalin years, especially in the 1930s. At the time, the iconoclasm of the immediate postrevolutionary years had given way to nation building and a conscious attempt to create a new Soviet "culture." In painting, architecture, literature, cinema, and song, images of landscape were enlisted to help mold the masses into joyful, hardworking citizens of a state with a radiant, utopian future -- all under the fatherly guidance of Joseph Stalin.
From backgrounds in history, art history, literary studies, and philosophy, the contributors show how Soviet space was sanctified, coded, and "sold" as an ideological product. They explore the ways in which producers of various art forms used space to express what Katerina Clark calls "a cartography of power" -- an organization of the entire country into "a hierarchy of spheres of relative sacredness," with Moscow at the center. The theme of center versus periphery figures prominently in many of the essays, and the periphery is shown often to be paradoxically central.
Examining representations of space in objects as diverse as postage stamps, a hikers' magazine, advertisements, and the Soviet musical, the authors show how cultural producers attempted to naturalize ideological space, to make it an unquestioned part of the worldview. Whether focusing on the new or the centuries-old, whether exploring a built cityscape, a film documentary, or the painting Stalin and Voroshilov in the Kremlin, the authors offer a consistently fascinating journey through the landscape of the Soviet ideological imagination.

More substantial story than "trivia".......2005-09-25
Hyperion released this book in October 1997, and it includes the "GH" spinoff, "Port Charles." Its author, who says he's been a "GH" fan since 1978, has also written "The Soap Opera Book of Lists" and "The Soap Opera Encyclopedia." Calling it a "trivia book" would seem to reduce its relevance and substance, as it really is a wealth of behind-the-scenes info about the show. The book includes black-and-white stills from ABC scattered throughout (it's sanctioned by ABC Daytime Press). Chapters feature celebrity appearances on the show, famous fans of the show, real-life romances of the stars, real-life names of the stars and more. The book's contents are also indexed at the end. (Oh, and there ARE a few "trivia" quizzes at the end of chapters!)
For GH fans old and new alike.......2002-02-23
This book has a lot of the show history along with trivia questions. Yes, the answers are included *grin*. If you are a long time viewer, you will enjoy going back over the highlights thru the years. The trivia questions are fun to test your knowledge of the soap.
For new viewers, this is a great way to catch up on past story of your favorite characters. See why Luke and Cassadines have fueded. Learn about Laura and her mother Leslie. There are several pictures from the show, but be aware, they are black and white.
I am the list owner of a GH fan group and I use this book to give weekly questions to the list. The members love seeing who will send in the correct answer first. Some who have viewed for many years have been stumped on occassion.
If GH is your show, this book is a must. It would make a really nice gift for someone you know who is a fan, too.
General Hospitol.......2001-08-08
I heard of that abc T. V. show called, "General Hospitol."
It is a book called The Official General Hospitol Trivia Book from the hit abc T. V. show like All My Childeren & Who Wants To Be A Millionaire my favorite T. V. shows.
I will love General Hospitol that the book will remind you of the book Son of Black Beauty by author Phillis Briggs like Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen's videos Billboard Dad, How The West Was Fun, The Case of the Logical I Ranch & The Case of the Hotel Who Done it the ones that would be cool.
I'll love that book.
It would be just like Rodeo Bloopers 2 & 9 the videos.

Get Excited, Get Happy, Just Get This Book.......1997-12-31
Wow! Your pulse will race! Your palms will get sweaty! You will not be able to get this book out of your mind (not until youv'e read it cover to cover at least twice anyway). The Official General Hospital Trivia Book is your ticket to the best roller coaster ride on daytime - and without those long expensive trips to an amusement park. The Trivia Book contains all the necessities for being a true fan: on-screen tales, backstage stories, and other minutia. So rush to get your own copy (or 2 or 3) then sit back and enjoy the ride!!!

Customer Reviews:
Clearly the author's labor of love!.......2007-02-22
This book literally picks up the reader and carries them through an impressive (read: large, scary, and dangerous!) body of information incredibly effectively, smoothly, and effortlessly. You can't help, but feel empowered afterwards!
I've been away from my EE background for 15+ years working on embedded real-time software. I picked up this book six months ago in what was a very modest attempt to familiarize myself with DSP and filters only enough to carry conversations with some new ME/Controls co-workers! The book ignited my interest (mainly by giving me a jolt of confidence!) in the subject such that I've spent the last few months delving into more "formal" DSP and reviewing some college math. In fact, I wanted to write a good review months ago, but it is now that I appreciate S. W. Smith's great work even more.
The simple and friendly language of the book is apparent, but the organization of the subject matter - so carefully weaved together - is absolutely nothing like the other pedantic introductory books on DSP. In summary, while it prepares the reader for practical DSP applications, the book is nothing like some other dull cook-book, get-rich, "for-the-working-professional" books. This one has a heart!
it is NOT a book ... it's a magnificent working tool.......2007-01-15
great ! it answers the whole pattern of digital applications. It does not enter in theoretical details and gives the user an handy guide to design filters, fft's etc. .. and (only if you like) the theoretical background where to start from, at the end of the book.
Really great. Thanks to the author.
Clear and useful.......2006-12-31
I started by reading the PDF versions on Steve Smith's website. That was enough to give me the background for a recently assigned task. Steve graciously returned a few e-mails about fine points that were not clear. I ordered the paperback version with the CDROM to get a version with the most errata removed. My task included some downshifting and upshifting not covered in Smith's book. Lyons filled the gap nicely. The example code in the book is in BASIC, but is very easy to implement in other languages. I used C++ and the FFTW libraries.
Best DSP refresher course available.......2006-08-17
My 40 year old MSEE needed some refreshing on digital signal processing, FFT, FIR and IIR filters. This book read like a novel! A great addition to my EEE/Programming library. I've used it daily since it arrived for the development of real time signal processing software to be used by the amateur radio community.
All but the BASIC..........2006-08-02
I like the content of this book... but I personally find BASIC to be a horrible choice for the code examples, as I think it is difficult to conceptualize the structure of code with *LINE NUMBERS*...
I mean... c'mon... if you think that there is any chance in heck of me being able to understand the mathematics behind filter design... you should assume that I can follow some sort of function based example code...
Really... the BASIC syntax just gets in the way of the math behind the algorithms...
Okay... I'm done now.
