From the supplier: America is benefiting from the North American Free Trade Agreement. US companies are prospering due to lower import and export tariffs and Mexico's desire to obtain US technology. Deregulation of the trucking and railroad industries have lowered shipping costs, providing greater profits for US companies. Kansas City, KS is one of several Midwestern cities benefiting from its location on Interstate Highway 35, the main transportation route between Canada and Mexico.

From the supplier: The governments of the US and Mexico had forged an agreement on coordinating and implementing environmental projects prior to the US congressional debate on the North American Free Trade Agreement. The arrangement called for the establishment of two institutions which will be tasked with managing the resources needed to confront potential environmental problems in border communities. The two institutions are the North American Development Bank and the Border Environment Cooperation Commission.

                Book Description

This detailed report on regulatory reform in Mexico outlines developments in regulation in Mexico since the 1980s and makes recommendations for further improvements in the regulatory system. Over the past 15 years, Mexico has expanded regulatory reform as a central element in a broad transformation from a inward-looking economy to an open and market-based economy.

Nevertheless, there is still much to be done: regulatory institutions and implementation capacities need to be strengthened; gaps in the current policy framework need to be corrected; regulatory transparency needs to be enhanced; more coordination between levels of government is needed; and regulations should be reviewed, particularly in such areas as bankruptcy, corporate governance, labor laws, and in such sectors as energy, water management, and education.

From the supplier: Transportation Sec Federico F. Pena expects trade between Mexico and the US to increase by about 100% by the year 2000 because of the North American Free Trade Agreement. He emphasizes the need to upgrade transportation infrastructure, specially on border communities, to accommodate the growth resulting from the accord. Unless transportation infrastructure improves, the accord may compromise the safety and environment of these border communities rather than create economic opportunities.

                          Book Description

Today's managers must deal with a wide variety of employee differences in ethnic backgrounds, values, lifestyles, and needs. This book presents a model of employee acculturation, investigating how Muslim employees adapt to U.S. national and organizational cultures
The study investigates the relationships between respondents' acculturation patterns, their degree of religiosity, degree of collective or individual orientation, the extent of perceived discrepancies between their original cultures and U.S. organizational culture, and their national origin, examining demographic variables such as age, gender, education, occupation, and number of years lived and worked in the U.S
Responses from 339 Muslims revealed that most were inclined to retain their original culture rather than adopting U.S. national culture. In contrast, most accepted U.S. organizational cultures. The analysis of the practical implications of these findings for business management highlights a number of practical strategies for coping with an increasingly multicultural workforce
(Ph.D. dissertation, University of Mississippi, 1993; revised with new preface, and index)

                          Book Description

Much more fun than having dinner with your lawyer!" -David Rosengarten, host of the food Network's Taste program.

From the McDonald's hot coffee case to the cattle ranchers' beef with Oprah Winfrey, from the old English "Assize of Bread" to current nutrition labeling laws, what we eat and how we eat are shaped as much by legal regulations as by personal taste. Barry M. Levenson, the curator of the world-famous (really!) Mount Horeb Mustard Museum and a self-proclaimed "recovering lawyer," offers in Habeas Codfish an entertaining and expert overview of the frustrating, frightening, and funny intersections of food and the law.

Discover how Mr. Peanut shaped the law of trademark infringement for the entire food industry. Consider the plight of the restaurant owner besmirched by a journalist's negative review. Find out how traditional Jewish laws of kashrut ran afoul of the First Amendment. Prison meals, butter vs. margarine, definitions of organic food, undercover ABC reporters at the Food Lion, the Massachusetts Supreme Court case that saved fish chowder, even recipes-it's all in here, so tuck in!

5 out of 5 stars This guys HATES catsup, but the book is still great.......2001-09-24

As the author writes, food is more than nutrients, It is our culture, and thus our laws reflect our cultural attitudes towards food. I picked up this fish-tale of laws by a curator of a mustard museum after I coincidentally attended a mustard festival. Levenson's book requires no pre-knowledge of the law; it provides an exciting, funny, enlightening story of food and our laws. Levenson writes that he toiled at a boring law job until he came across an exciting law case from 1924, in which a man sued a railroad and restaurant chain for requiring diners to wear dinner jackets. Now that was an interesting case (the barbaric diner lost), he thought. It got Levenson on a roll of researching and collecting food laws. The reader is the beneficiary.

The author provides stories and cases on food poisoning; the origins of the USDA FSIS, FTC and FDA; adulteration; advertising claims; and federal regulations defining peanut butter, catsup, fancy and standard ketchup. Also explored are The Delaney Clause, the labeling act, the Lanham Act, the doctrine of privity, the condom in the coke and other stories of foreign objects, fish bone choking cases, and stories about trademarks, such as the case between Planter's Mr. Peanut and Crown Nut's little peanut king. There is a whole chapter on kosher laws, state regulations, and kosher fraud. He explains why restaurant reviews can get around libel laws, why 60 Minutes was sued over an Alar story, and Oprah got in trouble with big beef. A Wisconsin resident, he tells the tale of how a state tried to stop Dairy Queen and margarine from crossing its statelines.

Hilarious synopses of cases are also included in easily readable form, including stories about the robber who left his fingerprints behind on a pack of hotdogs; the court that convicted a man of assault with an edible weapon (a salami); the man who sued a restaurant over having to pay a mandatory 15 percent tip for his party of `six or more'; the murderer who was put to death and whose last words complained that "I didn't get my SpaghettiOs" for his final meal; a 1962 case over a hard stale roll; and the Dept of Justice's prohibition (using the Clayton Act) of Mrs. Smith Pies purchase of LJ Harris Pie Company (so they couldn't get a bigger piece of the pie (market)).

Levenson also explains the law behind how Pizza Hut was able to sue Papa John's pizza over tomato sauce commercials, and why, in Liebeck vs McDonald's, a 79 year old woman, Stella, was INITIALLY awarded $2.86 million over a spilled cup of hot coffee. (She only wanted $20,000, McDonald's offered $800, and then the lawyers got involved). Buy it and read it before you take another bite!

Get In The Van by Rollins is the ultimate punk rock road book. This might, however, be the ultimate punk rock book, period. Jon Resh was a member of Spoke. You've probably never heard of them. He was a never a star. But he records in hilarious, wry, painful, and simple prose, the small victories, minor tragedies and humdrum existence of playing in a band. The pure joy of the bar E, the fumbling attempts with groupies, the hernias and cut fingers, life on the road, and all the mundanities of going deaf, and failing totally to make a living from it. Pure genius.

My son, age 15, needs to read for school and I'm constantly trying to find things that interest him. This book did it, he read it almost non-stop. He's into music and bands and this book kept his interest.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on modern underground music around.......2003-06-13

This book is a real friggin gem. Very well written (cannot say the same for most "punk" books that have surfaced recently), concise, and engaging. Though a work of non-fiction, it reads like a very modest historical account of a guy getting turned on to punk rock and how his band, friends, and life develops. Funny anecdotes, honest perspective ... Amped is about as good as it gets when analyzing a time in "punk" when punk and hardcore had gone different ways and indie rock was developing. Amped captures the spirit of many who drifted between scenes and couldn't help themselves from being underground. This paints a pefect picture.

                            5 out of 5 stars Just Fantastic.......2002-10-27

Okay, I loved this book. It's one of those books that you find that you're reading at three in the morning because you don't want to wait till tomorrow to finish it, and then you start laughing through your nose and snorting (something which you hardly ever do) cos it's such a riot, and cos Jon Resh is one of those authors... by which I mean, the kind of author who finds humor in the little things in life, and who can express himself with intelligence and wit. According to him, he was a (crummy)singer, but that's okay - cos he's a hell of a writer. I recommend Amped highly.

                            5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly amazing.......2002-07-14

I wasn't really expecting too much out of this book -- I was never a big Spoke fan, but enjoy reading about the days when I was more active in the scene than I find myself today. Once I started reading this I was immediately drawn in. Jon Resh is truly a gifted writer, turning out intelligent phrases in a down to earth and easy to read style. After reading this I had to pick up a Spoke cd just because I felt like I knew the band so well. I truely hope to see more from Mr. Resh in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Life as Art, art as Life?.......2004-01-30

Being female, it's difficult for me to appreciate the full context of why the Soprano's series is so appealing to men; but it surely is. To the extent that the series reflects the lives they lead, and hence, is the art by which they are most likely to identify with the dynamics, it must be successful due to its popularity. To the extent that it doesn't, it offers the opportunity to prevent lives from having to. Either way, it's a win-win situation since the positive and negative effects can be visualized and measured on the screen rather than through the high risk performance that people must try to live through to survive. Perhaps that is the series' peculiar appeal: safety and entertainment through scrutiny of what people could construe as dangerous territory involving dangerous people. To the extent that it measures a code of justice not often available to people on the outside, it serves to make the world a safer place because of its portrayals.

                              4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2003-04-26

I bought this for my son because he is a huge Sopranos fan. However, I snatched it away from him and had a great time reviewing the scripts.
When you watch the show, the dialogue is often lost or ignored because the viewer tends to be caught up in the action. By having a script handy, you get a chance to analyze the writing style. While the plots have a great deal to do with the show's ultimate popularity, the crisp and effective dialogue which remains true to each character's development is equally important.
If you are interested in learning how to write for tv or movies, the scripts are great to analyze.

It's a book that contains five scripts of the best show on TV. It's more than just a TV show, it's a cultural event. It captures the modern day mafia in a brilliant, clever, dramatic, and often times funny way. If You are an inspiring writer, wishing to find a good book for form, or seeking a great work to emulate, then this is the book for You...

5 out of 5 stars A quintent of final shooting scripts from three seasons.......2003-03-13

The big irony is that when you read "The Sopranos: Selected Scripts from Three Seasons" expecting to have increased respect for the writers, what you come away with is even greater respect for the actors. I like to look over scripts of favorite television shows, not just to see what was changed, deleted or added to what eventually aired, but to enjoy the stage directions, where the writers work in all sorts of fun and telling details. However, compared to most other television scripts David Chase and company do not provide a lot of extra tips (neither did Shakespeare, come to think of it). Consequently, the chief attraction here for fans of the shows ends up being the dialogue that never made it to the screen along with the introduction by Chase.

Of course the introduction is insightful, albeit relatively short, as Chase talks about the creative and casting process. I particularly liked the part when he explains the multiple strands that comprise each episode (a rule clearly violated by the "College" script, which only has two) and the process by which "Soprano" scripts are written. The results are the "final" (i.e., shooting) scripts, and why the title page of each episode lists the various revisions (blue for 1st, pink for 2nd, yellow for 3rd, etc.). Unfortunately, unlike some other script collections, there are not any notations on the pages to indicate what color they are; I admit, I am curious as to what pages make it from the first draft all the way through production.

For selecting only five scripts from the first three seasons of "The Sopranos," this collection does a nice job. You have to have the "Pilot" episode and "College" is clearly the most memorable show from the first season. "The Happy Wanderer" is another pivotal episode in the show's history and "The Knight in White Satin Armor" contains one of the biggest surprises. "Pine Barrens" represents a prime example of the comic extremes of which the show is capable. So I have no complaints given the collective results. The final comment would be that it is interesting to read hour-long television scripts without teasers and four acts; just another reason to applaud HBO's efforts in this area. So, where is the script collection for "Six Feet Under"?

I've been waiting for the screen plays to be released ever since seeing the first season of THE SOPRANOS. The only draw back is the print doesn't seem dark enough. I hope it won't fade quickly. That said, it's still a great book and would make a wonderful gift to any hardcore fan of the show. Keep your fingers crossed that other scripts will soon follow.

                              Book Description

The Book of FileMaker 6 is a complete reference to the FileMaker Pro product line, a cross-platform relational database management system for large workgroups, small businesses, and database-driven Web sites. Whether you're using FileMaker to run your office or e-Commerce Web site, or to develop commercial FileMaker applications, this complete guide shows how to create robust and dynamic database systems from the ground up.

The book introduces the FileMaker Pro development environment (and relational databases in general), but quickly progresses to in-depth discussions of advanced topics such as Web-enabling databases, integration with external applications, ODBC, XML, using plugins, professional development and project planning techniques, and much more. The CD-ROM includes hundreds of complete, ready-to-use example databases discussed in the book.

Even though this book was written for an earlier version of FileMaker, I am glad to have it in my library as a reference. It is readable and many of the principles described apply to any database, regardless of version.

The writing style won me over. I could pick a quote from nearly any section of the book, but I'll choose one from early on: "Every time you wait in line to get grocery money out of an ATM, you are waiting to access a database."

It could have been written: "Every time you get money out of an ATM, you are accessing a database." Dull! The example was made immediate by including the
"grocery money" and the "wait in line" parts of the experience.

The style includes humor, of course: "...if you had a degree in mathematics or were, yourself, a robot..." (p. 10, talking about creating unique IDs for your database).

I started at Chapter 0 and worked my way through the entire book. Even with my background, which was not that of a beginner, I learned something from nearly every page.

The most helpful chapters to me have been:
Chapter 15: Designing, Estimating, Planning, Developing, and Managing FileMaker Projects
                              Chapter 5: Developing Relational Databases
Chapter 12: FileMaker at the Center: Emulating or Integrating FileMaker Pro with Other Software (an eye-opener to me).

The chapters I refer to most often (after 15 and 5) are:
Chapter 14: FileMaker Pro Development Conventions
                              Chapter 7: ScriptMaker
Appendix A: Useful FileMaker Tips and Tricks

These are the chapters that have tattered the book.

Databases have always been difficult for me, even after 20 years in network design. FileMaker seemed to be the answer - power, clean design - everything a non-database person would love. But there is a learning curve, even with a great program like FileMaker.

Needing additional assistance, I turned to Chris' "The Book of FileMaker 6" because it was a) thick, meaning lots of information, and b) it came with a CD of examples.

After spending some time with his book, I can heartily recommend it as a "must-have" for anyone using FileMaker - beginner to pro. The book is well laid out, lacks the usual techno-jargon that crams other books and causes many reader's eyes to glaze over, and contains wonderful examples that allow even a new user to get working quickly.

Having written many articles and step guides myself, I can appreciate the work it took for Chris to put this book together. The examples, both those in the book and on CD, are useful, straightforward, and practical.

Bottom line - if you use FileMaker, you need this book...

Though it does give elaborate a bit on most ins-and-outs of Filemaker Pro 6, it doesn't go much into scrip wrtiting: a few lines, a few examples, not much 'general' syntax, and all its parameters. Anybody knows of a book that just teach you about (Filemaker Pro 6) scripts and scripwriting?

The Book of FileMaker 6 is the first book that I have asked friend to buy and Fedex for me. It's an excellent text book that I've ever had to lead me through my simple database development. Although English is not my native language, I found that the book is written in a very simple way and easily for understanding.
Another wonderful thing is that the book is covered entire feild on FileMaker 6. For example, the FileMaker Developer, FileMaker Server, FileMaker Mobile and FileMaker Pro etc. You'll find it very useful once you have it. I do looking forward to see the book of FileMaker 7 thatis going to be written by Chirs Kubica.

I've found your Book of Filemaker 6 an absolute gem in it's overall coverage of the Filemaker family. It's like having all of the Filemaker suite of products in front of you without having to spend a penny. Quite simply that means you will save hundreds of pounds by not buying the wrong product.

As someone with over 7 years experience of previous Filemaker versions the tips and tricks I learned about version 6 have saved me tens if not hundreds of hours.

Combined with an easy to read style and great organisation this book is a fantastic reference book I use again and again. One of the best value for money computer books I've ever bought.
