Customer Reviews:
are you kidding?.......2004-01-09
This book blows. If you really want to know what it's like to wait table or how to effectively wait tables...go to clamchowder.biz and buy clam chowder: the server's field manual.
Don't WAIT to get it!.......2001-01-30
A friend sent me a copy of THE WAITING GAME, knowing how much I value good customer service in restaurants. I found this book to be a thorough and comprehensive review of excellent service. It was both informative and educational, but not boring at all. I recommend it to all wait staff and management alike!

A lot of the arguments passionately advanced by Meredith Bagby in Rational Exuberance: The Influence of Generation X on the New American Economy, will infuriate (or at least baffle) those not born between the years 1965 and 1976. But that's beside the point. Bagby herself is a proud member of this maturing generation, and as an economist--as well as a regular on CNN's Financial News Network--she's developed strong opinions on the fiscal future of a population that reportedly believes more strongly in the current existence of UFOs than the long-term existence of Social Security. With the help of cutting-edge compatriots like pollster Kellyanne Fitzpatrick, presidential-speech writer Jeff Shesol, Wall Street Journal reporter Steve Frank, Cybergrrl marketing maven Aliza Sherman, and a host of other successful twentysomethings, Bagby looks into the political, social, educational, and occupational leanings of her peers with an eye toward the economic impacts that they're likely to have in coming years. Her insights into Gen-X thinking on employment and entrepreneurship, ads and the media that carry them, and consumer staples such as homes, cars, clothes, food, and drink, should prove intriguing whether you're on the inside or the outside of this up-and-coming generation. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
In Rational Exuberance, renowned Gen X'er and economist Meredith Bagby examines the ways in which her generation, against the odds, is steering the economy in a new direction. Overeducated, underpaid, and carrying the burden from three previous generations of overspending, Generation X has inherited a hard reality. A few examples... *
Generation X is the first in American history projected to earn less than its parents' generation. *
For every dollar spent on children in 1997, five dollars were spent on the elderly. *
Today's Social Security system is predicted to go bankrupt by 2030--just when Gen X reaches retirement age. Often ignored, however, are Gen X's creative influences on America's economy which range from bottom-line politics to flourishing entrepreneurism. Shunning the stereotypical "slacker " or "deadbeat " persona are key players in the media, financial world, and youth politics who speak in candid interviews about what makes this generation unique. This is the most comprehensive analysis of the next generation of American go-getters and the unique world they are shaping.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful and Intriguing.......2006-01-26
Written for a general audience, Rational Exuberance provides a clear, thoughtful examination of the next generation of employees and customers and what can be done to manage and retain them as both employees and customers. Since most of your future customers, employees and competitors will come from Generation X, it is necessary to separate fact from fiction and get a more accurate view of it. Meredith Bagby believes that the dire predictions about the future of the American economy at the hands of Generation X have been overstated. The view that GenX'ers are all a bunch of slackers is untrue. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, people aged 25-35 work 3.6 percent longer each week than the national average. However, they do have a new work ethic. Unlike the Baby Boomers, GenX'ers don't measure their lives by their career status. Since many GenX'ers come from broken homes and families with two working parents, they are seeking a balance in their lives between their work and home lives.
Wake Up Call for GenXers.......2000-11-04
Meredith did a fantastic job decribing where GenXer are coming from and where we are most likely going. The fact that she is an Xer herself gives her the insight to bring us this well researched and comprehensive masterpiece. It is a must read for rising star GenXers. It provides a reality check on many of the social and political issues that we Xers have been ignoring, but will one day have to face as we resume control of the country.
The New Wave.......1999-03-20
This book describes Generation X people who will be most of your customers, competitors and leaders, especially in the High Tech. They witnessed the downzisings of the 1980s..and today they can decide the future. This book shows their enthusiasm in a wide spectrum of activities.. In one word, how they are rationally exuberant.
Our economy is not doomed.......1999-03-12
In a clear, concise, and down to earth writing style, Meredith Bagby attacks the generation-x slacker label. With countless examples, Ms. Bagby details the influence that gen-x'ers have had on the economy to-date. More importantly, Rational Exuberance provides inspiration for ever member of gen-x to make a positive impact on society.

Book Description
These essays arose out of lectures given in Oxford to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1848 revolutions in Europe. Authoritative, yet readable and colourful, they comprise judicious summaries of the existing state of knowledge, as well as new insights and unfamiliar information. The book also seeks to place the revolutionary events in their wider context: apart from chapters covering the main centres of disturbance in France, Germany, Italy, and the Habsburg lands, there are discussions of the situation in Britain and Russia, which were affected but not convulsed by the disorders elsewhere; of reactions in the United States of America; and of the symbolism of 1848 for later democratic, radical, and socialist movements. 1848 marked the first breakdown of traditional authority across much of the continent, and as such is of profound significance in the development of modern European politics as a whole.

This Elibron Classics book is a facsimile reprint of a 1908 edition by J. G. Gotta\'sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger, Stuttgart und Berlin. Zweite Auflage
Book Description
Cynthia Kaplan takes us on a hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking journey through her unique, uncensored world -- her bungled romantic encounters and unsung theatrical experiences; her gadget-obsessed father and her mother, who, if you should want to know, is fine; her pill-popping therapist, eccentric grandmothers, and fearless husband, whom she engages in an ongoing battle over which of them is the most popular person in their apartment; and, of course, her vengeful, power-hungry, one-year-old son.
Kaplan's voice is a lot like the one in our heads -- the one that most of us are only willing to listen to late at night . . . maybe while locked in a closet. What a relief it is that someone finally admits that she is afraid of nearly everything; that she is jealous even of people whose lives are on the verge of collapse; and that she has, at times, tried to pass for a gentile.
Customer Reviews:
A Kindred Spirit.......2007-09-28
I'm here to rave about this book. It's a gem! Cynthia Kaplan writes in an unpretentious style that makes you want to invite her for coffee and a good chat. I'm afraid my copy of this book is "flagged" because I couldn't put it down. I related to many of her stories, from the pain of a loved one slipping away with Alzheimer's, to the brief insanity brought on by the presence of a moth, to the experience of living with migraine, and most of all, the all-consuming love you have for your children. I'm going to read her other book (books?) and hopefully she'll write lots more.
Maybe you have to have been there?.......2007-06-05
A number of negative reviews of this book stem from what appears to be a set up. Cynthia Kaplan didn't compare herself to David Sedaris after all. When I depend on reviewers to choose books for me, I'm most often sorely disappointed. I know what I like and I had only to read the intro line, "The eyes are the windows of the head," to figure I was going to enjoy this one.
Most likely, the reason I laughed out loud as well as felt Kaplan's pain, is because I've been there. So much of what she wrote reminded me of experiences in my younger life and in fact, her book lit a spark in me to do some writing about my own early adventures.
Yes, Kaplan is self-absorbed. This is memoir! It's the self-absorption that makes the book amusing. She's able to poke fun at herself and her own foibles and experiences which is something most people find very difficult to do.
I'm not saying this is the best book ever written, but if you like to laugh, take a day trip into Kaplan's world and see what happens.
A hilarious and moving quick read.......2007-01-18
I loved this book so much that I have given it as a gift to all my friends!
Why I'm Like This.......2006-10-05
Wow, this book was excellent. I loved it as much as I loved "Running with Scissors" and that says a lot. Perhaps it's because I'm just as neurotic as she is (I've been known to fear "mountain men" from time to time), or maybe it's because this book is just extemely heartfelt and entertaining. It's totally worth a read.
I find myself quoting this book...........2006-07-06
Acutely insightful, hilarious, profound. I find myself quoting lines from this book all the time.
It's rare that a writer can make me laugh again and again just thinking of a line. "...I went out and bought myself a new hat." "...he fell asleep on the bench with a piece of toast in his hand" "this hand-holder," etc. Cynthia Kaplan is one of those rare few.
As I did with David Sedaris when I first became aware of him, and Patrick Dennis, when they re-issued Little Me, Why I'm Like This is one of those comic gems that I find myself giving as a gift to people I really like.
I hope she writes another book. Soon.

KISS The Early Years Waring Abbott.......2005-12-15
I recieved this book yesterday & I must say I am impressed! The book is the a great representation of KISS during their formative & most vibrant years together- It also takes look at the Music From The Elder time period which the band & fans alike respond with mixed feelings. KISS has always been & will remain a visual group. This being said, it is made quite clear through the pages within that the attraction to KISS music is the attitude that the band has sustained for over 3 decades as a band. The commentery from Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley is a nice touch but I do wish they would do a project like this with Peter Criss & Ace Frehley since they were there & lived it with Gene & Paul-
What is with the eyes!.......2004-10-02
I have been a Kiss fan for 25 years,so when I heard about this book I was excited. When I got it I was horrified to find all the photo's had been altered from there original prints. For some unknowen reason they decided to add ink to all of Gene Simmons eyes(blacking out his pupils)It ruined a book that very well could have been the best Kiss photo book to date.
To DIE for.......2004-07-07
This book was really amazing because of its historical and photographic conception. I was really blown away by the quality of this photo book because it makes other bands' books look puny and unimportant. Many times bands put out books that offer either too much boring writing without content or dazzling photos in empty pages. Here Kiss is the focus and the images and content is actually very exciting. It works to their visual appeal and charismatic persona. The quality of the photos is really breathtaking and juicy enough for the viewer to have a glimpse into the backstage lives of America's nuttiest band. Buy this and add it to your collection.
ONE OF TWO WORTHWHILE ROCK BOOKS JUST OUT.......2003-03-05
I have been a Kiss fan since I was a boy in the mid 1970s and what a trip down memory lane this book was. It was pretty cool to see all these pictures from the early years and hear the stories behind them. I have to admit that I was fascinated to see it all for the first time. But would I still buy a new Kiss album...probably not. It was just a little nostalgia. I recommend this one...but the better brand new rock book I've read is "LAYNE STALEY: Angry Chair" about the Alice In Chains singer who died from a little too much isolation for five years and a lot of heroin and depression.
A Must For Any True KISS Fan..........2003-02-10
If you love KISS, you'll love this book. Has many pictures that even the hardcores, like myself, have never seen. Alot of stuff from when the band first started out. When they had little money and were struggling to be the topps in NY. Many photos show the true integrity of the band.

Customer Reviews:
Final Cut Express - er eventually.......2007-04-26
Having "mastered" iMovie, I felt I was ready to go further. Final Cut Express was the only choice, however not having the time to sit down and work out every tool was frustrating. I initially purchased this book about a year ago and had not been able to pick it up until only a couple of weeks ago. I really should have done it earlier.
Learning FCE is a huge learning curve without expert guidance. Especially if you have come from the relative simple life involving iMovie. It is quite an upgrade. This book takes you through from very basic setup and OS-X principles to initial look around the interface. Reading this book on its own does not help. Following the lessons with the included media is the best way. With the media files, you can easily experiment with features. I am not going to be willing to place my footage on this system until I am 100% comfortable. But that's me. With the lessons I have experienced, they have been great and straight forward. This book is huge. I have not got to the end and with FCE HD out now, I am wondering what differences there will be, but with this book the basics will be covered and the dvd content is great at helping you ease into this brave and "FUN" new world. I found it quite relaxing diversion aswell. Recommended.
A thorough grounding that will need supplementation.......2005-12-25
Let's start with the basic, should-be-obvious premiss: the Final Cut video editing platform is NOT "iMovie Complete"...except in the sense that it is completely different. The differences between Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro are in certain capabilities -- Express is not a "dumbed-down" version of Pro, it just lacks certain capabilities. The interface is a professional non-linear editing (NLE) tool whose efficient use is not obvious at first launch, unlike iMovie.
That being said, there is a significant learning curve for anyone picking up the FInal Cut Express tool for the first time. Diana Weynand's training course is a thorough grounding in nonlinear video editing using Final Cut Express. She presumes that the reader has been given this tool and the underlying Macintosh platform as a black box, and is expected to produce a finished product from it. In my view Weynand does a superb presentation, estimating with accuracy how long each lesson will take, covering a specific set of objectives, and reinforcing skills learned in earlier lessons when appropriate. All sample materials (with the exception of one chapter where one practices video capture using one's own set-up) are provided on the DVD bound with the book. It was sometimes disconcerting to work through a lesson with the author's tone implying that the work would be carried through in the next lesson -- only to start from scratch on a different project in the next chapter. The reinforcement, however, is that each project needs to be treated as though it is on its way to final production.
Two points I noted: (1) As in a classroom course, the lessons in this book teach one how to produce the example videos, using the example material. It does not serve well as a reference for ongoing production. A second book or reference guide (perhaps one of the Visual Quickstart guides) is necessary for ongoing work. (2) Comparing this book (covering FCE) to one's experience learning iMovie with the aid of David Pogue's excellent "Missing Manual for iMovie" is completely misplaced and unhelpful. Weynand provides a grounding in a professional-level NLE suite, and sorry to say, that takes much more time and concentration than learning iMovie (which I love for certain projects).
Be Careful of Second Hand DVD's.......2005-08-02
The book looks good and but it was a few months before I settled down to start learning Final Cut Express. Unfortunately the DVD supplied with the used book was seriously corrupted so the book is virtually useless and I do not remember where I bought for return....grrrr
Well Intended but Painful.......2005-03-21
If you like to read every last detail of how to perform a task, this is the book for you. She really was complete.
Unfortunately I don't have that kind of time. I learned iMovie in half a day with the Missing Manual book.
I expected 10 hours with this book and I would be off to the races but with all the detail in the chapters, and we don't start talking about importing from DV until chapter 12? Yikes! I know this product isn't that difficult to use.
A bit of a Stinker.......2005-03-15
I have self-learned Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXpress and InDesign well enough to earn a living doing pre-press work.
I learned iMovie reading one of the "Missing Manual" books and chose Weynand's book to help me advance to Final Cut Express. Well, it didn't do the trick for me.
One review said, "The trees are clear in her manual but the forest is nowhere in sight." Frankly, I didn't know what that meant - but after wasting my "hard earned" on this book, it's crystal clear.
This is the problem with buying books via the internet. Had I looked at this book at a book store I would have put it back on the shelf!
