Book Description
The papers in this book deal with general issues which arise in relation to the development of tourism. While economics is the main focus of many of the essays included in this volume, nearly all are multidisciplinary in nature. Given the multidimensional nature of tourism development, this makes for a more comprehensive coverage of the subject than could otherwise be achieved. This volume should, therefore, appeal to those who would like to take a holistic approach to the subject of tourism development, whether they be policy-makers, members of the tourist industry or academics

Book Description
As the industry environment transforms from a completely regulated setting to a broader, deregulated marketplace, new market participants must understand planning and operations of power systems to effectively participate in markets. This industry overview provides a description of utility operations and traditional planning, and then explains asset management, investment analysis, and risk management within the context of a market environment. Written to provide a broad, working knowledge of the industry, Electric Power Planning for Regulated and Deregulated Markets:
- Includes descriptions of generation and transmission network equipment
- Provides an overview of the regulatory framework, system design and systems operations for ensuring reliable delivery of power
- Presents system planning across different time horizons with the objective of minimizing power production costs
- Explains the principles and architecture of a market environment coupling operational imperatives with financial transactions
- Addresses approaches of various participants, including power producers, retailers, and integrated energy companies toward bidding in day ahead markets, managing risks in forward markets, portfolio development and investment analysis
- Provides numerous examples addressing cost minimization, price forecasting, contract valuation, portfolio risk measurement and others
- Examines past news events and explains what went wrong at Three Mile Island, the Northeast blackout of 2003, and the California energy crisis
This is an ideal reference for professionals in the public and private power service sectors such as engineers, lawyers, systems specialists, economists, financial analysts, policy analysts, and applied mathematicians.
Book Description
During the last decade, Latin American countries have reformed infrastructure services through private sector participation to enhance internal efficiency and competition to increase consumer welfare. Competition Policy in Regulated Industries offers conceptual and practical approaches to help such emerging economies identify competition problems in infrastructure sectors and find legal and structural solutions.
Infrastructure services have evolved from being publicly owned monopolies into entities in which private participation prevails, complemented by competition and regulation. However, even though competition is pivotal to public service reform, a high degree of vertical and horizontal concentration still pervades the industrial structure of many Latin American countries. Furthermore, mergers and acquisitions in an increasingly global economy, without appropriate legislation to promote competition and restrain market control, have often led to reduced levels of competition.

Description:
This paper describes and considers the effectiveness of the concurrency arrangements between the UK Office of Fair Trading and the sector regulators. It concludes that there have been several benefits, such as the regulators' specialised expertise, the absence of turf wars and the ability to move incrementally to the greater use of competition powers in the transition from monopoly to competition in regulated sectors. The bureaucratic and administrative burdens have been negligible, and the lessons learnt will be valuable in the development of European policy.

Book Description
The UK has pioneered the introduction of competition into previously monopolistic utility industries. Competition has been introduced progressively, starting with BT, and continuing with the gas and electricity industries, where it is to be completed during 1998. In water, competition has so far been restricted to new developments, and it is said that it will be phased in once the initial franchises expire. These radical policy innovations have been controversial, and raise significant generic problems concerned with market design, regulation, corporate strategy and income distribution. The lessons from the UK provide an essential input into liberalization throughout the world, as well as helping to shape the transitional arrangements already in place in the UK. This volume brings together independent experts with the specialist regulators to provide a comprehensive analysis of the issues. The common themes are drawn together in the introduction. The volume will be essential reading for utility companies, regulators, politicians and policy advisors.

Book Description
Expanding Competition in Regulated Industries reviews the changing regulatory environment, notably incentive regulation and competition in regulated industries. Some of the major changes in electricity, gas, and telephone utilities allow for competition in local service through unbundling. This book is of interest to researchers, utility managers, regulatory commissions, and the Federal Government.

Description:
In this paper we apply the mainstream theory of regulatory economics to the industry of municipal waste management (MWM) and discuss its potential for further liberalization and competition. We argue that opportunities for developing market-based solutions are indeed present, at least in principle: most stages are suitable for private-sector involvement and satisfy the theoretical requirements for introducing competition in its various forms. On the other hand, this development is slowed down by a number of factors arising from environmental policy, some of which have been justified in the past by the need to boost the supply of disposal facilities and maintain public control over the system. Though not fully incompatible with more competition, many of these factors are still valid today. However, while some observers seem to believe that competitive tendering is the best option for increasing market potential, we believe this is not the case, especially as far as vertically-integrated MWM is concerned. Other strategies, including competition in the market and regulated monopoly, seem more promising.

Description:
This paper looks at one particular aspect of the application of concurrency-the analysis of profitability. It warns of the danger that the standards of assessment employed in utility price setting will be carried over from ex ante regulation to settings where it is inappropriate, such as the ex post analysis of competitive markets. Utility regulation profitability standards are inevitably static but if these are employed in a competitive setting the wrong signals and incentives will be set. The results will be inefficient levels of entry into existing partially developed markets and insufficient investment in risky developing markets. This may be more costly than failing to account properly for dynamics in ex ante regulation.

Description:
This paper examines the application of general competition policy standards to utilities through the normal phases of market definition, market power assessment, and the analysis and regulation of conduct. It finds that where competition is established general standards are as relevant in utility settings as in any other. Indeed, given a tendency towards intervention and micro-management, the value of a commitment to this framework is potentially substantial. Although general competition policy is not well suited to dealing with persistent problems of monopoly, the standards it embodies are useful in determining when the nature of intervention in markets with historically entrenched positions needs to change.

Buyer beware.......2000-06-04
You should know that there is NOTHING printed in this book, it's totally blank. It is not obvious from the listing that it is. While I admit this IS somewhat funny, I didn't need to spend 3.99 plus shipping to get the joke. It would make a humorous shower gift though.

More than 20 years after its initial publication, Mystery Train remains one of the smartest, most provocative books ever written about rock-and-roll. Marcus puts his subjects--which include Robert Johnson, Elvis Presley, The Band, Randy Newman, and Sly Stone--into their proper context, which is the culture-at-large. He makes you understand why these musicians matter, and what they've contributed to the American imagination. In his introduction, Marcus confesses that he's no longer "capable of mulling over Elvis without thinking about Herman Melville"--to the benefit, I might add, of both parties.
Customer Reviews:
Rock and Roll Poetry.......2007-03-25
This book is an amazing look into the history and impact of rock and roll on pop culture. Greil Marcus writes about this artists and songs as a poet who has been deeply affected by this music. The lyrics seem to impact the very roots of his soul and diversly shape his world and view of America. This book is a must for any fan of rock and roll music or anyone interested on the impact rock and roll has had on American culture in general. Highly recommended.
Don't believe the hype.......2007-02-02
Uh, I'm not sure I agree a hundred percent with your detective work, there, Greil.
If he truly wanted to present and comprehensive view of what his subtitle purports, that is, American myths archetypes and how they inform and are presented by Rock and Roll, why is the scope of this book so narrow? The artists he focuses on are a motley crew. Elvis, Robert Johnson sure- but Randy Newman? The Band, but not Dylan? Harmonica Frank, but no Chuck Berry? Berry's oeuvre itself is a perfect microcosm of 20th century American Mythos. Speaking of myth, why is Pilgram's Progress invoked as a metaphor for The Band, but Faust isn't referenced at all in the Robert Johnson chapter. America is nothing if not Faustian. This book is 40 percent Rock-Geek trivia, and 60 percent pure ponderous speculation. Marcus occasionally drifts into a fugue and wanders far away from his (musical) subject, several times in the Elvis section whereupon he suddenly remembers what he was supposed to be writing about and tries vainly to shoehorn all of his speculations together. I think Marcus is a fine writer (we would not entertain his notions for a second if he wasn't), and this book certainly has its moments, but on the whole it does not nearly live up to its hype. He has done better, in The Old, Weird America, dealing with the same themes and sticking to one musical subject (Dylan's Basement Tapes).
I will never read anything by this author again!.......2006-10-05
I was SO excited about getting this in the mail to start reading, I had just read "This Wheels on Fire" by Levon Helm (which is AMAZING) and wanted to read more about that kind of music and read a critics take on it all and well...it was awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was pretentious and cliche...all of it. I cannot understand why this book is supposed to be so great. He makes all of these assumptions about what these musicians bodies of work are really about or are supposed to represent but even to someone who was not alive during the time period, it is obvious B.S.! Marcus tries to explain that The Band's whole body of work is some sort of metaphor...that is about a "worried man"...that their work is a story that they have made up to represent their fears and their vices. If you want to know what "the weight" is about, read Levon Helm's book which is honest, touching, inspiring AND informative.
Dancing About Architecture, Yay!.......2005-11-02
This was one of the first music criticism books I ever read. Sometime since I read someone scoffingly say, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." Well yes, this is true, and this is what makes Greil Marcus so great -- his writing his half dancing, half architecture. Even though the TONE of his writing makes a foray into claiming authority, he never loses his subjectivity. You always have the feeling that this is just another guy talking about music, except that he's incredibly smart and knowledgeable about music, literature and culture. I've heard some people complain about his choices for subjects here, that Robert Johnson does not deserve to be singled out, and that Dylan should have his own chapter, or even his own volume. But this book doesn't pretend to pick the greatest artists of all time and write about their greatest hits; there's dozens of other books for that. Read those books first, and then come to Marcus if you want something deeper. He does something different, and his books shouldn't be judged by those standards. At the end of the day, the best thing I can say is that I wish this book included a chapter about every artist that I love, and that reading this has deepened my appreciation of every figure involved.
I'm confused on what he focuses on the most..........2005-03-07
Is it the music or the events surrounding the music? In any case, Greil Marcus' MYSTERY TRAIN is perhaps the most unusual rock criticism book in existence. I purchased this volume because of my interest in the Band (who are by far the greatest artists in the whole story). And that point makes me wonder why the Band's records weren't scrutinized and explained even more. Where else can you read about the song "Across the Great Divide" and then tell people you know what it's about? I love the chapter on the Band, although I am not a fan of Marcus' writing, and I wish that he would have cleaned up his word choices and focused on the Band days instead of the Hawks' days (and some people can't see that artistic growth?). Anyway, anyone who says no one has heard of these artists needs serious medical attention. If anyone hasn't heard of the Band, I recommend that the get their head back into the real world. To call the Band's music siginificant and worthwhile is the understatement of the century. However, I never felt that Elvis did much for music (well, he didn't do much for me), and if you really want to get confused read the chapter on Sly Stone. Who the heck is Stagger Lee and why is he mentioned here? Did Marcus see WOODSTOCK? I think he spends too much time comparing things with classic authors from days gone by and he even draws paralells between old movies. That is fine with me, and I can certainly see the way music influences movies and vice versa, but a lot of that seems to be overblown. I didn't know if I was reading about Randy Newman or Raymond Chandler. He devotes a surprising amount of time to the Kinks, and while I find some of their material interesting, their place as one of the greatest bands in history is probably in question. I really don't like the words that Marcus uses to describe musical ideas that he hears, nor do I care for his admitting to having a perverted Elvis dream and his declaration of Ray Davies' homosexuality and his sensitivity towards murder and violence. If you want to, you can get confused. I am enthused by pop culture but particularly the music, and I love the sixties and would love to write about that decade myself, and I have purchased Levon Helm's THIS WHEELS ON FIRE, and have been fascinated by THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMPANION, WAITING FOR THE SUN, and I even bought the films EASY RIDER, DON'T LOOK BACK, and WOODSTOCK. Yet somehow, MYSTERY TRAIN doesn't seem to fit either in the forties or in the seventies, so I really don't know how to label it--but I suppose I am just grateful for the Band pages, but mind you I wasn't terribly impressed with those or Marcus' all-too-brief run down of a song called "The Rumor". At least he acknowledges it in detail later on, but what is his point in doing so?

"Probably the best book ever written about rock." --Rolling Stone.
Customer Reviews:
The light continues to shine.......2004-01-24
i have the hardback version of this book. This magnificent book came along in 1997 when "Guiding Light" was celebrating it's then 60th Anniversary. This month marks the show's 67th Anniversary {it having began on radio in January 1937 as a 15 minute sermon from various reverends from the Little Church in Five Points}. The radio show expanded to traditional serial melodrama by 1948 with the introduction of the German immigrant Bauer clan, a family that's STILL a part of the show to this very day, plus a host of other families. The book talks in-depth about each and every storyline that had a major impact or is at least memorable to fans. Admittedly, the first generation of fans who recall when the show was on radio are either no longer with us or are in their 80s or 90s by now. And so, this book, as i see it, was also designed to highlight the radio years for the contemporary fans of today who might've started watching in the mid '80s or the early '90s and afterward. The show moved to TV in June 1952 (continuing on radio until 1956). By now the Bauers were the focal point and the storylines were written to revolve around the Bauers and the conflicts they had with each other and the community. Bert was a social climber at first but she out-grew it by the early '60s after she had a pap smear, one of the first storylines in a soap opera to deal with such topics; Bill was a womanizer and an alchoholic; Papa Frederich was the German immigrant patriarch; and as the decade grew, Bill and Bert's son Ed became a doctor and an alcoholic while brother Mike became a womanizing lawyer. The book really gets "juicy" when the '70s section rolls around. 1971 was the debut of Michael Zazlow as Roger Thorpe, the scheming corporate ladder climber who was always being over-shadowed by nemesis Ed Bauer. And so, the '70s were dominated by the quadrangle of Roger Thorpe/Holly Norris/Ed Bauer/Peggy Fletcher. Storylines like that, plus the 1977 arrival of the wealthy yet sinister Spaulding clan would prove to be the show's success, causing ANOTHER very popular triangle of Alan Spaulding/Elizabeth Spaulding/Mike Bauer. The book gets vague in the mid '80s section because i recall things that the book leaves out: like 1986's return of Alan Spaulding. The book says Alan made his return with help from Baron von Halkein...which is true. But the book leaves out Alan's missing years (1984-1986) and never lets the reader know that Alan had been living life as 'Gregory Samuels' in San Rios after having been shot and presumed dead by the FBI, who were hot on his trail in early 1984. Alan had managed to seize control of several emerald mines and use an alias to avoid detection. If fans see this review they'll now know about Alan's missing years. Apart from that bit of history left out of the book, i have no complaints. The back pages of the book give histories of the families that were currently on the show: Bauer, Spaulding, Lewis, Reardon, Chamberlain, and Cooper. There are two tributes to the two most popular characters: Roger Thorpe and Reva Shane. Charita Bauer, the actress who played Bertha "Bert" Bauer from 1949-1984, is also given high praise. All of the awards from the industry to fan-voted are also shown. There's even a section where favorite couples are highlighted: Phillip and Beth; Mike and Elizabeth; Rick and Abigail; etc. Jerry ver Dorn gives the introduction and he holds the record for second longest running cast-member. He's played attorney Ross Marler since 1979. The record holder is Charita Bauer, of course, with 35 years as Bert. The other person with the most consecutive years behind Charita's 35 and Jerry's 25, is Tina Sloan...she's played Nurse Lillian Raines since 1983, this is her 21st year on the show. This book is dated, of course. A lot has happened on the show since late 1996/early 1997. seek out back issues of Soap Opera Digest for re-caps of action post 1996. This book is a must for all fans of the show both young and old. Until someone comes along with a potential 70th Anniversary book in 2007, this 60th Anniversary is an excellant introduction to the show.
Definitive Scrapbook for GL fans.......2003-07-28
Hopefully, there will be future update editions of this wonderful missive on the history of daytime's oldest soap. Not just for fans, either!
A Must for Guiding Light fans.......2002-10-03
Great book! Lots of information about GL. I enjoyed reading what happened in the episodes before I was an avid watcher.
GL FAN.......1999-06-21
I have been a huge fan of GL for a few yrs now..the only thing that sux about this book is that all the great gl stars have left.. wendy moniz as dinah marler and cynthia watros as annie dutton will greatly be missed..
it is a great show...but the WRITING DESPERATELY NEEDS to improve...but the memories from 1990-1997 were truly spectacular...finally we see THE LIGHT!
Perfect for any Guiding Light Fanatic.......1999-04-28
What an awesome way to celebrate the longest running show in broadcast history. Sixty years is really a long time, and this is the perfect way to enjoy all those special moments with the Bauers, Marlers, Chamberlains, Spauldings, Lewis, Reardons, Thorpes. Look through the romances of Reva and the schemes of Roger. Look through the most spectacular love Stories ever told on daytime TV. This is perfect for any die-hard Guiding Light fan.
I personally enjoyed this book, because I have only been a fan of the TV series for about 5 years now and since reading this book, I feel like I was actually there when the show started on the radio.
Book Description
This book presents a thorough introduction to the Microchip PIC® microcontroller family, including all of the PIC programming and interfacing for all the peripheral functions. A step-by-step approach to PIC assembly language programming is presented, with tutorials that demonstrate how to use such inherent development tools such as the Integrated Development Environment MPLAB, PIC18 C compiler, the ICD2 in-circuit debugger, and several demo boards. Comprehensive coverage spans the topics of interrupts, timer functions, parallel I/O ports, various serial communications such as USART, SPI, I2C, CAN, A/D converters, and external memory expansion.
Customer Reviews:
A very thorough overview of the PIC microcontroller.......2007-03-12
Having a background in software development (C/C++), having written a lot of assembly language in the distant past, and being familiar with processor architecture, I found the book to be straightforward and useful to me. I was able to make rapid progress through the text, sometimes skipping ahead to sections to find just what I needed. Plenty of useful source code in both asm and C as well. The professor who wrote this put together what seems like a very clean, easy to understand text (where "easy" may depend on your background - I found it easy). It is true that you can probably find much of the information in the processor specification PDF file available from Microchip or in other online sources, yet I found it very convenient to have it all available in one organized textbook. I do recommend the book for others wishing to learn more about the PIC18.
A bit difficult to read, but very detailed........2005-09-26
This book goes from basics to advanced topics, and includes sections on both assembly and C programming. It contains everything I needed to know except how to control stepper motors. This is strange because in his companion book on the MC68HC12 16 bit microcontroller he gives a very good section on stepper motors.
If you use the Allegro 3967 you don't need to use the microcontroller to drive them, just to provide on/off, speed and direction information. The 3967 does all the difficult work.
The style is a bit academic, as though it is being submitted for peer review, so he tends to overwrite things. It does not make for easy reading. I found I had to read some parts 3 times over.
I suppose any fact-filled book is not going to be an easy read.
It is worth sticking at it. He really knows his stuff, John Kirby
The best PIC18 book available........2005-09-02
I have virtually all of the major PIC books available and this
one is, by far, the best PIC18 book on the market. That may be
because it is written as a textbook by an obviously experienced
academic as well a microprocessor engineer. Each chapter follows
a natural progression from the basics of instruction set, tool
use such as MPLAB, assembly, C programming, and
on to the details of the PIC18 architecture.
Its clear organization makes it equally useful as a reference
and may be dipped into for solutions to many PIC issues such as
I2C, timer and A/D use and interfacing details for many applications.
For the earlier PIC16, the best reference is "The Quintessential PIC Microcontroller"
by Sid Katzen for many of the same reasons.
Buy these two books and you have both the PIC16 and PIC18 covered.
it's not an introduction in fact it's advanced Software & Hardware Interfacing.......2005-07-20
the name of this book is not matching with it's contents unfortunatley i found it very complecated and confusing and very hard to understand,it seems to me the only way to understand it is to read some other books related to the PIC microcontroller
the name of this book is missleading
