    Book Description

This is the first sustained comparative examination of the importance of media attention on the provision of economic assistance, suggesting that the news media is an important medium for policy makers to gauge potential domestic political pressures and thus the need to be responsive and even anticipatory in addressing problems real or perceived. Particular attention is paid to the responsiveness of bureaucracies, long held to among the most insulated institutions of government. Cross-national in scope, this book looks at the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Japan, facilitating a nuanced understanding of the interaction of international and domestic politics as mediated by the media.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Brecher wrote: "A rigorous analysis of foreign aid".......2004-04-06

(From Michael Brecher's review on the back cover) "This is an ambitious--and successful--attempt at theoretical integration, with a valuable empirical component. Basing their analysis on the domestic political imperatives model of foreign policy decision-making and the principal-agent model (agency theory), Van Belle, Rioux and Potter dissect, with laudable rigor, key strands of the politics of foreign aid. Their comparative analysis of overseas development aid (ODA) programs by the five largest developed donor states adds an instructive case study dimension. And they have used their rich, genuinely comparable data to generate important findings. As such, this book goes far beyond the typical one-dimensional studies of the role of the news media and the media-bureaucracy nexus in decision-making relating to foreign aid."

      Book Description

The twentieth century brought industrialization to Texas cities. For Mexican workers in the state, this meant worsening economic conditions, widespread discrimination, and an indifferent or at times hostile Anglo labor movement. Faced with such challenges, Mexicans often looked to each other or toward Mexico for support and inspiration in building a largely autonomous, occasionally trans-border labor movement. In this first book-length examination of the earliest organized efforts by Mexican-origin workers in Texas, Emilio Zamora challenges the usual, stereotypical depiction of Mexican workers as passive and hard to organize. Instead, working within the framework of the "new labor history", he looks beyond the conventional focus on trade unionism and collective bargaining to encompass the broader social experiences and culture of Mexicans as a national minority and a repressed segment of the working class. Through extensive use of Spanish-language archives in Mexico and the United States, Zamora examines workers' independent organizations - including mutual aid societies and cooperatives that functioned as unions - as well as spontaneous informal actions, including strikes, by Texas Mexican workers. He portrays the gradual yet increasing integration of those organizations into the mainstream labor movement and examines labor solidarity across ethnic lines. In addition, he discusses the special role Mexican labor played in bridging labor struggles across the international border and in challenging racial exclusion on the job in the predominantly Anglo labor federations and in the broader institutional life of South Texas. Although the early efforts at inter-ethnic unity failed tomaterialize fully, Zamora concludes, they nevertheless provided a legacy that tells much about the minority position of the Mexican community, the impressive organizing activity and bid for incorporation of Mexican workers, and the ambivalent response by organized and unorganiz

        Book Description

As part of a bilateral commitment to focus on winning World War II, over 100,000 contracts were signed between 1943 and 1945 to recruit and transport Mexican workers to the United States for employment on the railroads. A little-known companion to the widely criticized agricultural bracero program, the railroad bracero program corresponded in its implementation more closely to the original intent of both governments than did its agricultural counterpart. In spite of pressure from the railroad industry to continue the program indefinitely, the U.S. government was adamant about terminating it on schedule and returning the workers to Mexico. The railroad bracero program still stands as the only historical example of a binational migration agreement between the two countries that was executed and concluded in the spirit of the original negotiations. The abuses commonly associated with the agricultural program were controlled in the railroad program by the organization of international committees wherein the Mexican government could, and did, force the U.S. government to be accountable for the plight of railroad braceros. The Tracks North is the only book-length study devoted to the railroad bracero program. Barbara Driscoll examines the program and its place in the long history of U.S.-Mexican relations. In so doing, she uses a wealth of materials seldom used by investigators of the bracero program, and also provides a clearer picture of the internal workings of the bracero program in Mexico than any other study produced to date.

The man's name is Willie Kocurek. If you have never met him, then you have missed out on an opportunity to know a true "Austin Icon". Of his many mantras, "Where there's a Willie, there's a way", speaks volumes of his success. This book is an entertaining glimpse into what has made the man what he is today. I know Willie - and thanks to this book, I now know the way!

A piece of Willie Kocurek's lovable stories to take home with you! I have heard Willie speak and his book comes to life with his wonderful stories! I could actually see him as a child stomping the sauerkraut!

Thanks, Willie, for sharing your life and your wisdom with us. We should all strive to be like you!

The people at the bookstore are probably still talking about the nut who danced around the featured books table last night. I couldn't help it... I was completely caught off guard by the title staring at me: "The Wit and Wisdom of Willie Kocurek."

My little celebration dance concluded, I snatched up the book and ran to the counter, never bothering to look at the price. It wouldn't have mattered.

Too excited to drive home, I read the first several chapters in the parking lot, then drove home and finished it. I'll probably reread it every year or two from now on. In my humble opinion, no library is complete without one of these little beauties in it. Everyone needs to know Willie Kocurek.

The story of the morning that I met Willie by accident has become the favorite chapter of many readers of my own New York Times bestseller, Secret Formulas of The Wizard of Ads. (Chapter 75: A Bright Red Bow Tie)

Willie Kocurek is one of those rare people that you should go out of your way to get to know. Buy this book and you'll carry the pearls of Willie's humor, audacity, wit and wisdom in your heart for the rest of your life... a bargain at any price.

From Pietro Aaron to Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Don Randel compiles 1,013 pages of thumbnail sketches describing the life and music of 5,500 individuals who figure significantly in the world of music. Intended for "the musically inclined, the curious, the informed, and the expert," this is a beautiful, intelligent, and comprehensive volume that wants only its companion, The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, to feel complete.

            Book Description

An incomparable guide to the thousands of characters, from humble artisan to lofty genius, who people the unfolding history of music, this volume brings together all the pertinent biographical information about composers, performers, music theorists, and instrument makers from the days of praise chants to the bop and pop of today. A long-awaited companion to The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, and compiled with the same meticulous scholarship and delight in detail, this biographical dictionary emphasizes classical and art music, but also gives ample attention to jazz and blues, rock and pop, and hymns and showtunes across the ages--with unusual care devoted to coverage of the twentieth century.

That the Belgian composer Jean Absil was professor of fugue at the Brussels Conservatory is a little-known fact. And few are aware that Roy Acuff began his country-and-western career in medicine shows. The writings of the seventeenth-century organist Jakob Adlung may be obscure, while Theodor Adorno's are widely read and studied. But they can all be found in the A's, along with 218 more entries, from Herb Alpert and the Andrews Sisters to Carl Friedrich Abel and Emanuel Ax. And this is only the beginning.

Here then is the information you need about 5500 figures in the world of music--the major, the minor, the famous, the nearly forgotten, from Bach and Beethoven to Irving Berlin, Benny Goodman, and Bruce Springsteen--capsule summaries of the lives and careers behind the music enjoyed in every era. The volume is enlivened with illustrations, some revelations in themselves.

A compendium that no music lover should be without, this rich volume, along with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, constitutes the standard reference work for the musically inclined, the curious, the informed, and the expert.

5 out of 5 stars The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music (Harvard University Press Reference Library).......2005-09-21

A great companion to the Harvard Dictionary of Music. Well written, comprehensive, and surprisingly complete for a sigle volume dictionary. Highly recommended for any serious musician or teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Inexpensive.......1999-09-09

One word. Wow! This book, combined with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, makes a great resource for serious musicians, amateurs, and students alike. The near 6000 entries make this reference the best for its price. I've used the Baker on several occasions. While the Baker is certainly more comprehensive, a glance at its price (~$90) is enough to make one think twice. The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music, with its bargain price, is a must buy. Couple it with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music (which is the same price as the Biographical Dictionary), and you will have an unbeatable musical resource at your disposal. If you are REALLY tight on budget, then perhaps you may want to check out the Oxford Dictionary of Music. It accomplishes in 1 volume (and ~$34 compared to the Harvards' $54 combined) what the Harvard Dictionaries do in 2, though (understandably) to a much lesser extent. Nevertheless, the Harvard music references are still great buys, especially if you have a little extra cash to expend.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent refereence........1998-02-01

Written by over 70 top musicologists, this splendid reference focuses on composers but also includes a generous selection of performers, theorists, and instrument makers, of all eras and genres, in nearly 6,000 entries.
Biographical details are of course provided, with a brief professional resume, (with longer entries for composers of greater significance), an accounting of major works, and a discerning bibliography where appropriate. The authors mention lifestyle issues when they bear heavily on the career of the subject (e.g., Chet Baker's heroin addiction), but the emphasis is on music, as it should be.
Coverage runs from Edouard Lalo to Little Richard, Johann Friedrich Fasch to Johnny Rotten, so whatever the musical taste, this dictionary will be useful. Highly recommended for music lovers of all persuasions.

                Book Description

In the last ten years, television has reinvented itself in numerous ways. The demise of the U.S. three-network system, the rise of multi-channel cable and global satellite delivery, changes in regulation policies and ownership rules, technological innovations in screen design, and the development of digital systems like TiVo have combined to transform the practice we call watching tv. If tv refers to the technologies, program forms, government policies, and practices of looking associated with the medium in its classic public service and three-network age, it appears that we are now entering a new phase of television. Exploring these changes, the essays in this collection consider the future of television in the United States and Europe and the scholarship and activism focused on it.

With historical, critical, and speculative essays by some of the leading television and media scholars, Television after TV examines both commercial and public service traditions and evaluates their dual (and some say merging) fates in our global, digital culture of convergence. The essays explore a broad range of topics, including contemporary programming and advertising strategies, the use of television and the Internet among diasporic and minority populations, the innovations of new technologies like TiVo, the rise of program forms from reality tv to lifestyle programs, television’s changing role in public places and at home, the Internet’s use as a means of social activism, and television’s role in education and the arts. In dialogue with previous media theorists and historians, the contributors collectively rethink the goals of media scholarship, pointing toward new ways of accounting for television’s past, present, and future.

                5 out of 5 stars High-level scholarship.......2006-04-18

"Television After TV: Essays on a Medium in Transition" by Lynn Spigel and Jan Olsson (Editors) is a scholarly collection of essays about TV culture, technology, industry, and culture. Professionals who have studied these issues in depth offer insightful analysis and criticism, and offer a range of opinions on what the future may hold. Through its consistently high-level scholarship, the book also offers the next generation of media abalysts many outstanding examples to emulate as well as suggestions on how the field of study might remain relevant.

The book is divided into four sections.

Part One is "Industry, Programs and Production Contexts". John Caldwell discusses the post-Fordist media industry's shift to producing branded content and TV's increasingly strategic relationship with the Web. Charlotte Brunsdon surveys Britain's lifestyle programs to find the social good of inclusiveness partly offset by more aggressive displays of consumerism and spectacle. Jeffrey Sconce convincingly argues that TV narratives have grown more sophisticated over time as conjecture, mythology and self-relexivity have conspired to enrich texts that in turn cultivate ever more demanding audiences. William Boddy recounts the history of interactive technologies and suggests that if the past is a guide, new technologies will merely serve to enhance the TV experience but will not revolutionize it. Lisa Parks deflates microcasting as embodied by the Oxygen network as representing a corporate scheme to more efficently market to profitable niche audiences and encourages social progressives to fight for greater TV self-expression.

Part Two is "Technology, Society and Cultural Form". William Uricchio explores how changing technologies have threatened broadcaster's control of programming flow and predicts a general shift from broadcasting to narrowcasting. Anna McCarthy's fascinating field study about TV in public spaces ultimately discovers that viewing practices are defined by capitalism's exploitation of waiting time created by differentials in power relations. Jostein Gripsrud contends that broadcasting will persist because it continues to serve elite interests in distributing cultural values and anticipates that interactive technologies will only marginally effect viewer behaviors. Anna Everett's case study of the Million Woman March touches on issues of technological self-empowerment and the mainstream media's increased reticence to cover significant social issues and events in depth.

Part Three is "Electronic Nations, Then and Now". Michael Curtin discusses the history of media production to show how national broadcasting was crucial to U.S. capitalist development in the post-World War II era but has more recently entered into an era of uneasy international competition and cooperation between East (Hong Kong) and West (Hollywood). David Morley contemplates TV's role in reinforcing the nation state and the manner in which audiences experience dis-placement through media images. Pena Ovalle analyzes the Pocho.com website's satirical treatment of popular media imagery in order to debate issues effecting the Chicano/a community and its struggle for cultural identity.

Part Four is "Television Teachers". Lynn Spigel recalls how MoMA's anxieties with consumer culture, feminity and domesticity doomed its programming attempts in the 1950s that sought to bridge the gap between hibrow art patrons and lowbrow TV audiences. John Hartley reminds us of the important role TV played in sharing differential experiences and struggles (such as the Civil Rights and Feminist movements) and contends that TV today has become a more democratic medium. Julie D'Acci proposes a new cultural studies model that stresses audience discourses and interdisciplinary study as the keys to yielding meaningful insight and analysis.

I highly recommend this sophisticated book to everyone interested in TV studies.

5 out of 5 stars Comphrensive, but not for beginners.......2004-07-29

This book is a very comprehensive manual on the use of Outlook 2002, and is great if you are well versed with Windows, Internet Protocols, and computers. It includes detailed discussions of setting up Outlook for MS Exchange Server (which allows multiple users to access Outlook data at the same time).

If you're a novice, however, you may find the information in the book overwhelming and confusing. This book may well be too much information for the casual individual user. If you are a casual user who will use Outlook only to keep track of your calendar and your date book, you may want to buy a simpler book that just focuses on what you need to know in order to use Outlook.

5 out of 5 stars Read cover-to-cover and it is a worthwhile read.......2002-01-05

The book does an excellent job describing how outlook works at the right level of detail. There are lots of screen shots where they provide value. The text does an excellent job talking about WHAT outlook does and HOW you can do things with outlook. It provides TIPS on how to do things and how people combine features of outlook in ways that I did not know were possible!

I set out to learn how Outlook works. I decided that Outlook is a valuable productivity aid and that the "trial and error" method of learning it was not how I wanted to learn it. I found this book recommended on a web site, bought and read the book (cover-to-cover). I now feel I know what outlook can do, and how to do it.

And no. I do not know the author or have anything to gain from this review.

5 out of 5 stars The book to have!.......2001-09-07

This book is by far one of the best I've seen on Outlook. It is geared to intermediate to advanced users and covers all the major topics in good detail. I found the chapters on integrating Outlook and Exchange Server particularly useful. There are a lot of great tips on configuring public folders and using advanced features that aren't covered in most of the other books. There is also a nice introduction to programming Outlook applications. If you are an experienced Outlook user or want to get up to speed on managing Outlook installations for Exchange Server, this is the book to have.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference material.......2001-07-20

Some books give you workbook like examples to do. Some times that approach works best, but for me, I just want to read about how the software works, and apply it to the work I am doing. This is not a step-by-step book where you do exercises, which for my needs is good. This book includes a CD of the whole book, plus other things. Overall, I have found this book able to address my techncial questions in depth, the CD is worth the price alone.
