    Book Description

The last twenty years has seen a proliferation of the term "tourist destination". Improbable places, such as industrial cities and isolated rural environments have become legitimate places to visit. At the same time, traditional tourist destinations such as coastal resorts have declined in popularity. There is a shift from "old" to "new" tourism. These case histories examine these issues. The book is divided into three sections, dealing with political, economic and sociocultural reasons for change.

Systems of Innovation and Development confronts the challenges and opportunities of the knowledge era, focusing particularly on the new conditions for industrial and technological advancement. The distinguished contributors address many of the most significant issues including: the globalizing learning economy, the finance-dominated accumulation regime, learning and development divides, systems of innovation and local productive arrangements. They also define the conceptual and methodological instruments which can be used to analyze and understand the core issues of learning, knowledge and innovation. In doing so, they demonstrate the value of the systems of innovation approach in the design and implementation of strategic development policies which are urgently required in many countries.

This book represents a significant contribution to the debates surrounding globalization and local systems of innovation. The diverse perspectives on global and local processes combined with original insights on developing countries will be of immense value to scholars and students of economics, social science, political science, and business administration. The book will also be of interest to policymakers in governmental and non-governmental bodies, particularly international development agencies.

5 out of 5 stars "Pariah States" & Sanctions in the Middle East.......2001-09-01

This is a excellent book that is well-written and full of insight and wisdom. Tim Niblock draws on his extensive experience in the Middle East to provide an informed and accurate assessment of the political economies of Iraq, Libya, and Sudan. In the process, he presents a skillfully constructed and cogently argued assessment of the impact of sanctions on the governments and peoples of Iraq, Libya, and Sudan. He emphasizes the limited impact of sanctions regimes as a means to modify public policy in general and to create a stable international environment in particular. This book should be mandatory reading for the bureaucrats, politicians, and diplomats involved in imposing sanctions regimes around the world.

Rib Gustafson's hilarious stories of life as a Montana veterinarian cover a spacious territory. Ranging from the familiar land of newborn calves and porcupine-punctured dogs to the foreign terrain of de-scented skunks and the "Japanese quarter horses" of modern ranches, Gustafson takes readers across a realistic and downright funny range. A Montana All Creatures Great and Small, this collection of thirty-two tales is a must-read for animal doctors, animal lovers, cowboys, and those who have only imagined ranch life.

5 out of 5 stars Under the Chinook Arch.......2003-04-09

A great book! Humorous, adventurous, easy to read and hard to put down. A historical look at what a mid 20th century ranch veterinarian went through to make ends meet. It should be required reading for large animal practicioners, students or anyone who has an interest in ranch vetting.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-09-20

I found out about this book when I took a class taught by Rib's son, Sid, who is also a veterinarian.

WONDERFUL BOOK -- funny, true-- great!

            Book Description

The definitive biography of legendary punk band the Clash, and the first to draw on original interviews with the band

The only internationally successful, million-selling group to emerge from the late seventies London punk scene, the Clash set out to change the world with a potent mix of politics, iconic imagery, and blazing rock 'n' roll. It was an agenda mirrored in the Clash's music, which swiftly evolved from ferocious punk rock to incorporate reggae, ska, funk, jazz, soul, and hip-hop. Passion Is a Fashion draws on over 70 interviews with the key participants in the story-roadies, producers, friends, and fans-and conversations with the Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Topper Headon. The first book to give real insight into what went on behind the scenes during the Clash's ten-year career, it charts the Clash's picaresque progress through the days of the early punk scene and their groundbreaking Rock Against Racism gigs, to the arduous touring, to their break out in America, and the making of the classic London Calling album, all the way to the band's eventual dissolution and the sudden, sad death of frontman Joe Strummer. Gritty, compelling, and above all authoritative, Passion Is a Fashion is the biography the Clash has long deserved.

5 out of 5 stars Passion for The Clash.......2007-09-07

A great, detailed and thorough history of The greatest Punk band ever. This is a MUST READ for anyone interested in the origin of contemporary rock music. The author delves into the personal history of the band members from childhood on. Pat Gilbert obviously has a passion for The Clash as every band today should and probably does. This book is an amazing overview, easy to read and impossible to put down. I bought this for myself but my 14yr. old son "permanently borrowed" it from me, reading it like crazy(he's not fond of reading) and I couldn't be happier.
Thank you Pat Gilbert for writing this awesome book!!!!!

It really gives an insightful history of the band and really made me like them even more. If you love the clash this book is worth every cent. Buy it!!!

            5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2006-11-12

I just got it a week ago. I CANNOT put it down. Well written and a lot of great facts that I never knew about. For example: Did you know that Joe Strummer's first guitar was actually originally owned by Pete Townshend?

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive book - welcome to 1970s South London.......2006-06-02

This review applies to the 2004 hardcover edition. I knew a reasonable amount about The Clash before reading this book but the author here opened my eyes to a number of things and helped to confirm some of my ideas and reject others.

This is an academic book in the sense that any university sociology or history department type would or should respect the high standard of scholarship here - painstaking research involving interviews with a large number of band friends, business associates and childhood and youth buddies - and objective and intelligent analysis throughout. Although the research is detailed and Gilbert takes the subject matter seriously, the writing is still lively and captivating.

The book first traces the childhoods, youth days and former bands of all members individually which is fascinating and well researched. A lot of this information would be new to even the diehard fans. It's fascinating to read about and see a picture of Mick Jones' gran's 18th floor council flat in South London overlooking the Westway - where Mick "practised daily in my room" according to the song Stay Free. We also get to learn about Mick's close friend, also written about in Stay Free, who in real life did serve time for a bank robbery offence.

The art-school beginnings and the "squatting days" in early 1970s London (living in vacated houses under the Westway without paying rent) and the members' pre-Clash bands are well documented. Overall, Gilbert does an excellent job in helping the reader recreate in his/her mind the world of 1970s South London where the Clash story was played out. That is one of the book's great strengths in my opinion.

The book demolishes some punk myths, but keeps others alive. Firstly, the book demolishes the cherished idea that The Pistols and The Clash were working-class lads who met up, decided to form a band, and sing about social and political topics. There is some element of truth in that idealised view. However, the bands' respective managers, Malcolm McLaren of The Pistols and Bernie Rhodes of The Clash, clearly manufactured the bands to a certain extent based on their personal visions of what they wanted to achieve. Joe clearly understood this and was willing to co-operate with Rhodes to achieve common goals - but Mick was less supportive, being more of a traditional old-time rocker.

Gilbert clearly describes the social changes affecting Britain in the late 70s - the rise to power of the Thatcher right-wing government and the first wave of West Indian immigrants into London (and especially Brixton). We see how all band members had a genuine and sincere desire for racial harmony - they were fascinated by Jamaican reggae music and later New York hip hop. The bands' involvement in anti-racism gigs and sharing the stage with acts such as Bo Diddley and Micky Dread were extremely influential in contributing to the unity of the streets.

Another Clash myth that the book does not debunk but strengthens is their closeness to the fans and genuine warmth they felt towards the fans and vice-versa. However, the bitter infighting and bad vibes involving Joe, Mick and Paul often seemed to take the joy out of their lives and the book exposes this fully. It ultimately led to Mick's sacking at the hands of Joe, Paul and Bernie.

Other highlights are detailed descriptions of the recording sessions that led to each album and brief song-by-song descriptions (however, the focus on the actual music is fairly brief - the book is more a study of people and society).

Producer Guy Stevens' drunken chair-smashing antics during the London Calling sessions are hilariously recounted. His crazy energy probably contributed to the eclectic joy that London Calling produced. The details of the football games during the London Calling sessions are also interesting. The orange mohawked Japanese guys they met playing football in the London park - who knew every note of every Clash song (and Joe's cynical reaction to them, in contrast to the other band members) - also is humorous in my opinion.

Lastly, we are also are given a rare insight into The Clash Mark II. The three young band members who replaced Mick and Topper are all interviewed. Naturally they were dissapointed with certain aspects of the Mark II experience - but they don't seem bitter and it doesn't seem that they were treated totally badly (at least not by the band - by Bernie Rhodes maybe). In my opinion "This is England" (from 1985) ranks in The Top 3 Clash songs of all time. Good to get an insight into this less-publicised and once-denied stage of the band's existence. It almost makes me want to go out and buy Cut the [...]!!

I enjoyed my trip to the world of South London that Gilbert offered and South London became a better place I'm sure due to the huge influence of Joe, Mick, Topper and Paul. Stay free...

              5 out of 5 stars Exquisite coffee-table reference on Italy's cult auteur.......2001-11-26

This fine book is an essential library addition to any fan of the late great Sergio Leone, Italy's supremely gifted-yet oft-maligned cult director. Jammed with gorgeous color and b&w photos, informative and often humorous interviews and back stories, De Fornari has put together a fine tribute/filmography that any Leone devotee, like myself, would treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Once Upon On A Leone.......2000-12-07

Sergio Leone directed my favorite Western film - Once Upon a Time in the West with Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, Henry Fonda and Claudia Cardinale! Great behind the scenes book on the director and his many films (Once Upon A Time in America, Clint Eastwood Man with No Name Triology). Offering insight from his crew, cast and associates! Great pictures and text! And insight from the director himself. Though this price is quite steep! One of the best films books that I have read!

In a remarkable feat of reporting, without Johnson's cooperation, Pulley shows what it really takes to get ahead in America today, and in doing so provides as valuable a cultural as business history."

The first-ever in-depth look at one of the greatest business stories of our time

A true heavyweight in the star-studded world of media entertainment, Robert Johnson, the creator of Black Entertainment Television (BET), turned a revolutionary idea and a $15,000 personal loan into a multibillion-dollar empire. As one of the richest black men in America as well as its first black billionaire, Johnson's success with BET has been a social examination into both race and capitalism with his many detractors holding him to a higher standard of cultural responsibility from which his competitors are exempt. Engaging and informative, The Billion Dollar BET skillfully examines Johnson's humble origins, his dogged and inspired climb to the top, and his often controversial tenure at the helm of one of the most influential media outlets in the country. This book takes readers on a fascinating journey, beginning with Johnson's days in rural Illinois, his graduate life at Princeton University, and his role as a cable industry lobbyist on Capitol Hill. The Billion Dollar BET also details how Johnson courted media titans such as John Malone and Sumner Redstone and convinced them to play vital roles in BET's success. Readers will also learn how BET quickly spread across the country and took on far greater social significance than even Johnson ever imagined. Filled with revealing anecdotes and never-reported details of Johnson's life, his business philosophy, and the world inside BET, this story will teach readers even more about business, race, and themselves.

4 out of 5 stars BOB JOHNSON A MAN WITH ATTITUDE AND POWER.......2007-05-14

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT BET FOUNDER BOB JOHNSON. IT WAS A GLIMPSE INTO THE LIFE OF A POWERFUL MAN AND HIS RISE TO FORTUNE AND FAME. HOWEVER I WISH MR. JOHNSON WOULD WRITE HIS OWN BOOK. SO THE READER COULD HAVE A CLOSER INSIGHT TO HIS FEELINGS REGARDING THE REASONS WHY BET DIDNT DEVELOP INTO A MORE USEFUL TOOL FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY. WAS THE REASON MR. JOHNSON'S NEED FOR POWER AND MONEY FORGETTING CONTENT ?

              5 out of 5 stars Even-Handed Saga about America's Leading Black Entrepreneur.......2006-03-22

The fascinating rags-to-riches story of Robert L. Johnson, the U.S.'s first black billionaire, has all the makings of a great novel: personality, determination, opportunity, scandal, backstabbing and tremendous success. Against all odds, this child of a poor, black rural family became a media pioneer and a very wealthy man. A visionary, he started Black Entertainment Television (BET) with $15,000, four employees, and incredible energy and ambition. Judging by the amount of money he made, his success is clear, although biographer Brett Pulley says his track record in social responsibility is muddier. We recommend Pulley's remarkably even-handed, in-depth portrayal of this enigmatic, controversial, often hard-hearted mogul.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story on Robert Johnson and BET's 25-year success.......2006-03-05

I first saw Black Entertainment Television in 1984. I went, Is this really happening? Will anybody watch it? Over two decades later, more than 80 million viewers that watch it sometimes and being sold to Viacom yet keeping its integrity, it's a well-watched network. I'm still speechless that it has succeeded despite the darts thrown from media critics. I have seen its changes, good shows being taken off and replaced by something else, but it has become a better product with its programming lately. I couldn't believe that Video Soul got cancelled and they didn't let Donnie Simpson know. Robert Johnson saw the vision of this network for 25 years and he deserves a lot of the credit. He surely saved his money to become the billionnaire that he's become. BET is more than its endless showing of music videos, movies, reruns and the popular 106 and Park, it has news programs and shows that help improve the livelihood of African-Americans everywhere. And it's gone from having most shows shown in Washington, DC to studios in New York and L.A. While I miss Tavis Smiley (and he should have NEVER been taken off the network!), he's gone on to bigger and better things on another network. I'm sure that there were riffs and arguments Robert had over the direction of the network when we the public weren't looking. I don't listen to the critics who lambast the network--BET is what it is and it does interesting programming that ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX CAN'T! It shows the many sides of African Americans, positive, controversial, confrontational, good, bad, uplifting and everywhere else. A lot of people say that selling BET to Viacom made Mr. Johnson a sellout. It hasn't--it has helped BET become more accessible, even with its website and other properties. The Viacom people respected BET's incredible growth and didn't change anything to it. It has really given many Black personalities exposure with its programming, from celebrities to top leaders. Sometimes MTV's latest programming looks like BET, so the network's influence is all over the place on other cable networks! I hear BET mentioned more in conversations today than in the past, so it's a brand all its own. It's not just watched by African-Americans, but all races and nationalities. I hope that the next leaders of BET continue Robert's vision in the future. This book makes me respect Robert more and why I continue to watch BET 22 years later in 2006!

Living his passion and dreams, Johnson's story is told vicariously by journalist B. Pulley. Entrepreneurs can absorb much from the determination and success of Bob Johnson.

              5 out of 5 stars Go Getter.......2005-09-14

Brett Pulley pulls together one of the most in depths pieces ever written on a black businessman, not just any black businessman, but the man behind BET. Brett pulls all stops on getting the nitty gritty on BET from the first scandal to Bob Johnson's billion dollar deal with Viacom. Pulley reaches into the black community, along with the media world and close personal friends of Johnson to get the story of a lifetime. Robert L Johnson is an even-tempered businessman with his heart set on making a deal as cheap as possible. He started BET with a $ 15,000 loan and thus paving the way for many up and coming African American entertainment moguls. Those who know Johnson personally would say he put the E in BET, which stands for entertainment. According to this book, Bob pulled out of business deals at the last minute, because he didn't want to put up a bulk of money to front the cost of production or any thing else he felt that was considered unnecessary. But Johnson always stood by his word and made powerful decisions, as he felt necessary. From the day he met his $15,000 obligation he built his way to a billion dollar deal with media powerhouse Viacom and went on to buy the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA and the Charlotte Stings of the WNBA.

This book fits any American who understands what its like to have a dream and sit down and make the plans to achieve this dream to its fullest. The book itself allowed me to look at someone else go through the trial and tribulations of building an idea into a multibillion dollar situation it allows anyone with dreams to see hope.

              Amazon.com

At its core, Amazon.com is a great big database concerned with lots of stuff--books, of course, but also tools, clothing, films on DVD, kitchen equipment, and lots and lots (and lots) of Harry Potter paraphernalia. Want to wear an Anna Kournikova exercise brassiere while juicing celery (presumably with considerable vigor)? Amazon can help. Need a cricket bat, radar gun, dietary fiber supplement, or vibrasonic molechaser? Amazon has what you need. Which is all great, but the real value of Amazon.com isn't that these things are in the database. The real value of this site lies in the information about all that stuff--reviews, sales rankings, recommendations, and the like--and the large number of ways to access it. Amazon Hacks explains how to get the most out of Amazon.com as an ordinary customer with a Web browser and as a software developer interested in the site's considerable collection of Web Services.

In Amazon Hacks, Paul Bausch documents most of the avenues Amazon.com has opened up for exploration of the database. A lot of his coverage borders on the obvious: Sections on how to "Power-Search for Books" and "Put an Item Up for Bid at Amazon Auctions" aren't too different from Amazon's own explanatory articles. Coverage of how to add an Amazon search box to your own site, and add Amazon Associates item links to various kinds of Weblogs (including Blosxom and Moveable Type) are much handier. Bausch really shines when explaining Amazon.com's Web Services (AWS), the remotely accessible software interfaces that enables programs to search the database. He includes AWS-enabled programs in PHP, Python, and Perl. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Amazon.com as a Web surfer, Web site publisher, and software developer. Detailed coverage goes to advanced product search techniques, managing the characteristics associated with your Amazon login, selling through Amazon Auctions and zShops, and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) API for Perl, PHP, and Python.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good and very informative.......2006-09-18

I've been using Amazon for years and am an active poster of reviews. I was astounded to see just how much I didn't know about Amazon's resources and capabilities.

Even if you're not interested in programming hacks or using Amazon's API, this is still an extremely informative book for any Amazon user.

It provides excellent insight into how Amazon works and the wealth of information you can derive from Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Amazon's improving usability renders this book unnecessary.......2006-08-18

When this book was first published, it might have been somewhat relevant. However, Amazon has continuously upgraded the usability of its site to the point that where the answer to any question you might actually have about its features is now on the website, including forums where you can discuss individual books, and even a forum where users discuss the well guarded formula for ranking Amazon reviewers, which one clever person came up with via experimentation. Also, Amazon's interface and features are constantly being changed and upgraded, so that some of the specific information in this book is no longer correct. I give this book two stars only because it is well written, but I strongly advise against buying it.

              1 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2006-02-28

All of the information in the book could easily be obtained (for free!) from the Amazon Web Services website. In fact, all I learned from this book was that Amazon's online documentation was VERY complete!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2005-11-12

I can only assume that the positive reviews were written by relatives and friends of the author. This book is only useful if you are totally unable to search a database by typing in "rolling pin", and if you are interested in doing a lot of programming to accomplish simple and mostly useless tasks. As a seller on Ebay, I found nothing of use in this book, and, as a purchaser, I am capable of finding a "flashlight" without doing a lot of programming. This book is highly oversold. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars A super guide to Amazon!.......2005-07-26

This book covers a wide range of tips and tricks for using Amazon. These include at the beginning a range of advice for people who want to know more about shopping on Amazon and using the Friends and Family area and Wish Lists, but you will get a lot more out of it if you have an Amazon Associate account and Developer token with web hosting which supports the use of PHP, as many of the scripts provided only work if you're able to upload them and use them online.

I am a little puzzled that nowhere in the book is it stated that you should not direct link to Amazon's images - all the hacks around the use of images involve direct links even though it states clearly in the Associate terms of service that you should upload images to your own server rather than linking directly to images on Amazon.

Many of the tips are aimed at amazon.com but most will work on all the Amazon sites.

It's a great book and well worth keeping to hand even if you're just browsing around adding to your shopping cart and/or Wish List!
