        Book Description

Wages have always been a major expense for businesses. This fascinating book studies the impact of spiralling wage demands in a cotton factory in Ghent during the 19th century and the efforts of management to reduce this cost through investment in new technology and stricter employment policies. The workers' responses to wage cutting are also considered.

The importance of this study lies in its unique collection of wage data -- more than 200 pay books and 100 ledgers from the Voortman cotton factory -- which show, in great detail, the hourly, daily and yearly wages for all categories of workers between 1835-1913. Various aspects of wages are addressed including: changing living and working conditions; wages of women and children in relation to the 'family wage economy'; wage comparison between workers at Voortman and workers in other industries and regions; productivity, purchasing power and industrial relations.

        Book Description

Here is the first comprehensive analysis of insect reproductive behavior to employ a modern evolutionary perspective. As such it represents a marriage of two disciplines—entomology and modern evolutionary theory—which have recently made great strides, but in partial isolation from each other. By reviewing all of insect reproductive behavior from an evolutionary viewpoint, Thornhill and Alcock make a powerful case for the importance of sexual selection. In doing so they show the riches to be gained from an integration of theory and example.

"[The Evolution of Insect Mating Systems] brings to a vertebrate-biased literature a well-documented and persuasive demonstration of the importance of insects for generation and testing of theory . . . organizes an immense and diverse literature on insect reproductive behavior into a logical framework that will allow more efficient and effective exploration of both insect behavior and sexual selection theory. Thornhill and Alcock demonstrate the utiltity of evolutionary (selectionist) thinking for organizing and explaining diverse and complex patterns of behavior . . . As a result, their books goes well beyond a review and synthesis of tghe literature of insect behavior . . . The Evolution of Insect Mating Systems will make its mark as one of the more important contributions to behavioral ecology, evolutionary theory, and entomology."—Science

4 out of 5 stars Great book, lousy printing.......2002-02-26

Everything Bill Perez says is true. This book is a classic in entomology. I couldn't put it down when I read the library copy so I ordered one for myself.
BEWARE! The older edition has some great photos. The new 2001 edition is very poorly printed. Many of the photos are inscrutable. The printing is clear but the graphics are quite poor. I was upset to find that, for a very expensive book, I wasn't getting what I had expected.

5 out of 5 stars The Exquisite Horror of Alien Beauty.......2000-07-16

When you use your imagination and envision insect evolution as a single, huge and ancient phenomenon--a monstrous morphing blossom endlessly ramifying through an infinite-dimensional phenotype space--you begin to understand it as a fierce and indomitable force of nature. And while many of its freakish aspects are standard fare in biology textbooks and nature documentaries--never failing to cause our vertebrate mandibles to gape in horror--the mating schemes of insects are seldom dwelt upon in presentations to layfolk. While this fat volume is not specifically aimed at the casually interested layperson, it is well within the grasp of the interested non-biologist--and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in insects or evolution. First, it is a thorough review of the evolutionary issues of insect sex. Unlike many scientific "reviews" which are highly skewed towards the author's own work, this book displays the authors' almost omniscient acquaintance with everyone's contributions to the field. But this book is not a taxonomy--every example of insect mating strategy is presented within an evolutionary context, and used to illustrate or nuance some adaptive principle or tradeoff. And if you thought insect defense, feeding, and social habits were weird--be prepared for an extreme excursion through what insect evolution is capable of--from "traumatic insemination" (where the male, circumventing the female's sperm-sequestering genitalia, rips through her side to deposit directly in her abdomen[!]); to parasitic flies homing in on noisy crickets to spray them with a cloud of slowly lethal maggots (illustrating the costs shouldered by conspicuously advertising males); to grossly immature male fig wasps, emerging extra early to inseminate virgin females before they have even awakened from their brood chambers; to the whimsical surrealism of insect genital morphology. Of course, not everything is nightmarish--there are the beautiful aerial acrobatic contests of territorial male butterflies; the complex game-theoretic calculus of nuptial gifts, the guarding of females, and female mate choice; the almost comical orthopteran [grasshopper/cricket/katydid] Kama Sutra on p. 312 (I need this on a poster or T-shirt!). And to see all this (copiously illustrated, by the way), not as individual wonders held up to amaze, but as part of an illumination of basic evolutionary principles is pure scientific elegance. Awesome.

          Book Description

Insects and arachnids display the most impressive diversity of mating and social behavior among all animals. This book investigates sexual competition in these groups, and the variety of ways in which males and females pursue, persuade, manipulate, control and help one another, enabling us to gain a better understanding of how conflicts and confluences of interest evolve together. Each chapter provides a comprehensive review of mating systems in particular insect and arachnid groups, discusses intrinsic and extrinsic factors responsible for observed mating strategies, and suggests fruitful avenues for further research. The book culminates in a synthesis, reviewing the data in terms of the theory of sexual conflict. This broad-based book will be of immense value to students and researchers interested in reproductive strategies, behavioral ecology, entomology and arachnology.

If you're a devoted fan of The Larry Sanders Show--the HBO program that wrapped up its award-filled run in May 1998--you've already got a copy. However, it was nice to find that this book, written by Sanders's comic alter ego Garry Shandling (assisted by the über-ghostwriter David Rensin), stands on its own as an ironic, tongue-deeply-in-cheek look at talk-showdom. Here are a few samples:

Here is a photo of Jennie Garth from Beverly Hill 90210. I had sex with her a dozen times, but she never reciprocated. Her excuse was, "I like men."

Unbeknownst to most everyone except those of you who regularly read those trashy tabloids--and that would be all of you--I have suffered through many personal tragedies: an unhappy and abusive childhood, two divorces, many empty love affairs, a venereal disease that nearly took my right leg, feuds, substance dependencies, a palimony suit from my mother, who said, "You live with me for twenty years and move out just like that? This will cost you," and worst of all, the horror of being rear-ended backstage by one of Siegfried and Roy's big white leopards.

Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host is an enjoyable tour through stardom with a truly sleazy Hollywood character. Anybody who relishes celebrity bios will get the joke and engage in delicious snickers of recognition. Larry Sanders is dead, long live Larry Sanders! --Michael Gerber

              Book Description

With the wit and charm and wit that have made him one of America's most beloved, and now most sorely missed, television personalities, Larry Sanders tells here the story behind the man -- Larry -- from his emotionally barren beginnings in Mound, Minnesota, to his ten-year run as the man millions went to bed with every night. (He had a very big bed.) Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host is a Hollywood autobiography like no other because it reveals all -- the loves and losses, the pain and joy, the shrinks and doctors -- and it is uproariously funny. Larry Sanders has written a book that will have the same ten-year run that his show did.

Larry Sanders is no ordinary man, and this book will show America and the world how very different he is. Fueled by an enormous need to be loved and gifted with a talent beyond even his own, Sanders has risen to the top of his field -- and dropped -- while retaining all of his dignity and modesty. As he says on the first page of his story, "I'm famous. Actually, I'm very, very, very famous." Sanders's story is laced with the names (and some of the faces) of the thousands of celebrities who have sought his attention for a decade -- and Sanders tells the world what he thinks of all of them, even if it hurts his own feelings.

Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host is a Hollywood tell-all that will forever change the nature of this kind of book. While Geraldo Rivera used his sexual exploits to shamelessly promote his book, Sanders uses his conquests of thousands of women to illustrate his compassion and grace. "If it sells, it sells," Sanders says. "There was never a hidden agenda." While Roseanne used her book to promote her many personalities, Sanders's book shows how a straight-shooter can not only survive but thrive in Hollywood. Most of all, Sanders, in truthfully disclosing all aspects of his life and those of people he has never met, hopes to heal and entertain. Sanders has written a wonderfully hilarious book that will make some of his fans wish he were back.

This is not the best of autobiographies. But nevertheless it was a very funny book. The story about how his mother slept with Redd Foxx and Tito Jackson was a hoot. He's no Ernest Hemmingway but if want to read a very funny book buy it.

2 out of 5 stars A few laughs and mercifully its over quickly.......2003-03-12

This is a strange genre - an autobiography of a fictional character. Add to this that the fictional character is Larry Sanders, a paranoid, insecure, and egotistical host of a late night talk show! Fortunately, the large print face, copious white space and 82 pages of pictures contribute to making this a quick read. The humor would be the sad type of laughing at some obnoxious, insensitive bore, except we are saved from feeling bad about this by the fact that the object of the joke is fictional. This is supposed to make laughing at him acceptable. If you can get into the premise there are plenty of funny jokes.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2001-10-27

It had me laughing and chuckling out loud on the train, on my way, to and from work for a few days. When I got to the last page, I wished there was more.

5 out of 5 stars Confessions Of a Late Night Talk Show Host: A Book's Book.......2001-10-05

I thought Larry Sanders "Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host" was just a terrific work. I've read a number of books and neither of them were even close to being as good as this one. Reading Larry's life story was like getting to know him all over again and it was very exciting to learn that Larry has so much in common with the common man. It's so easy to relate to Larry on so many different levels and some that aren't level at all. For instance, Larry reveals that he's slept with a number of different women...

Anyone who fails to grasp the humor in this book, should take a long look in the mirror and ask themselves this question, "Are you looking at me?" That's the thing about Larry Sanders, he can look in the mirror without having to ask that question. In fact, he doesn't even have to look in a mirror to not ask that question. Some people will never understand that and I'll never understand that.

I just hope in this politically correct atmosphere that this book will be taken at face value. In Larry Sanders case, it's worth at least half that amount and I'm proud to stick two thumbs up in approval and delight.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Book.......2007-05-28

This book is excellent both for the student and instructor. It is well written and easy to follow. Each program has it's own session filled with exercises, quizs, reviews, etc. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is learning software programs or need a refresher course.

5 out of 5 stars DDC Learning Materials Continue The Tradition Of Excellence.......2005-09-15

DDC Learning Microsoft Office XP is an excelent book for use by individuals who wish to learn without attending formal class sessions or enrolling in an online course. Of course, the book is also excellent for students enrolled in Secondary Education classes or Adult Education classes. The books published by DDC provide guides to use either menu commands or keyboard commands. Electronic files are provided for all lessons to limit the amount of keyboarding required so that the student concentrates on learning. I use the materials for my personal learning when I wish to quickly get up and running with a software application.

For teachers, solution files and other materials are available. Over a period of several years, I observed both students and teachers successfully using DDC materails. I have yet to find a teacher who used these materials that did not reorder DDC material for subsequent classes. While there are a variety of good materials available, my personal opinion is that DDC materials continue to be one of the best available both for individual use and classroom use.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book from Beginners to Advanced Office.......2005-02-10

I'm an instructor for computer school where we teach Office at various levels - and even the most advanced students of mine really like this book.

The examples are great and straight to the point, also - if you do not know how to do something - you can actually find under the procedures quickly and easily.

On the downside - it does not have many expert topics as VBA (and not much for Macros) - but the topics it does cover are great. Even if you have used office for years - in this book you will find new COOL things you never knew about.

Covers Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint --> Tons of practice!!
