Description:
This study formalizes and empirically tests the conjecture that the discovery of large silver reserves in its American colonies during the 1540s triggered in Spain a case of Dutch disease, diverting factors of production to non-traded goods industries and undermining the Spanish comparative advantages in the Early Modern Age. I develop an open-economy model to mimic the economic conditions in Imperial Spain. I then present new consumption weights built from primary sources, which I combine with existing price data to produce price indexes for traded and non-traded goods; these are then used to test the implications of the model in a Markov-switching regression framework. I identify a strong and persistent increase in the relative price of non-traded goods coinciding with the silver discoveries, lasting for almost three decades and reversing itself only after the 1575 and 1579 crown bankruptcies.

A much more readable book on the struggle to design a working, sustainable, environmentally sensitive tourism policy than many other books out there. Focuses on popular "adventure tourism" areas that are being hit by greater and greater tourism numbers today. Highlights the sometimes missed problems that tourists pose those often developing areas. Could have been a little heavier on the evidence and facts. Good integration of personal experience and flavor of the countries visited.

I am especially impressed by the innovative comments made on the Lockean theory on property by the author. While many philosophers have categorized the Lockean liberal theory as individualistic, the author has successfully enlightened us to reconsider Locke's theory. Through the critical analysis on Locke, the author concludes with two important points. First, Locke was not successful to justify private ownership by the notion of equality in the State of Nature. Secondly, based on the discovery that Locke failed to justify private property, the author put forward that the Lockean theory, though at the first glance be classified as individualist, "Locke's service as an apostle of individualism was merely part of his service as an apostle of collectivism." (p.318)

Hollywood Noir presents a detailed narrative of a period of complicated and intense labor strife in the film industry before and during World War Two. The author offers meticulously researched history of racketeering and intimidation as rival unions strove for exclusive bargaining rights for the many crafts and trades required to make movies. Actors and extras are in the fray as well.

Readers will recognize many of the biggest names of that era, movie stars, studio heads, columnists, and union bosses as well as many of lesser fame who played parts in the extended drama.

The volume contains gripping history, facsinating biographical material, excellent photographs, and an extensive bibliography.

Oh, yes! Mr. Olsen offers editorial comments and opinion regarding his featured actor, Ronald Reagan. Read the book. You'll be informed and entertained, whatever your view may be of the former president.

This book restores my faith in humor of a darker nature. It will not help you lose weight unless you are laughing so hard you are too sore to eat, or are too depressed because you look like the fabulously full figured model (could she be the author?). It's not exactly politically correct, and it's not for the faint of heart, which is why I love it. Buy it. Enjoy it. Eat it. Give it to a friend with a sick sense of humor.

This is how I learned to play guitar..........2007-02-27

Seriously, if you want to learn how to play rock music, buy these books (volume 1 and 2) and practice learning the rhythms and leads and solos. It's challenging stuff for sure, but there's a wide variety of styles and such. I recommend learning all of Patience to start, then move on to harder songs. I learned so much from learning songs and parts of songs from this by striving to play it note for note. Theres a ton of guitar playing on all these songs so it should keep you occupied for a long time.

If your advanced and just want to learn GNR songs then its just as good. Everything is easy to read, the print size etc. is perfect and everything is accurate as far as I can tell. Get both of these books and you have the blueprints for learning to play rock music.

Slash is definately my favorite guitarist and to me there's none better when it comes to playing with heart and soul and technique to match. If youre serious about self teaching yourself rock guitar definately give these books a try, it will be very rewarding.

Volume 1 - don't miss.......2001-08-19

Includes songs like Break Down, Civil War, Don't Cry, Knocking on Heaven's door and more - just fun to play. A must have for all those who play the guitar or Guns n roses fans. Don't forget to buy volume 2. Doesn't have the songs from: 'The Spaghetti Incident?' though, maybe it's better this way because that album wasn't too good.

I love how every single song is in this two book set (Complete I and Complete II). It's very thorough and it has every signal note from every Slash solo. But, it is a bit advanced (for me too) and a lot of it is pretty complex. Good thick tab book though.

I first encountered Ben Long in 1989 in Raleigh, North Carolinawhen I was working on a television profile of his friend and fellowfresco painter, Charles Kapsner. Ben sat, somewhat reluctantly, I thought, for an interview, and regaled us with tales of their days in Florence. I later joined his circle of associates attending the dedication of the St. Peter's fresco in Charlotte. The sense of inspiration was palpable in the church that evening, Ben's generous and deep nature infusing this great monument to the sacred; later, at a bistro down the street, he stiffed me for a bottle of Wild Horse Pinot Noir. How could one not be charmed by this study in contrasts?

By 1990 I had been drawn into his circle, videotaping work at Ben's Paris studio on his next project: the massive fresco triptych which adorns the Bank of America lobby in Charlotte I briefly met Richard Maschal when this book came out, and I found him describing the same man of brilliant mastery, intense commitment and provocative nonsense that I came to know over the span of three years. As painting proceeded at what was then called NationsBank Corporate Center, captains of industry replaced the church hierarchy, and Ben's subject matter moved into secular themes. But the dichotomy of patron and painter remained the same, as Richard so aptly compared to that of Michelangelo and Pope Julius II. At one point Ben's work was halted while Charlotte Powers that Be decided that they understood Ben's desire to make a strong statement about regional heritage, but could not countenance a certain larger-than-life image contained within the center fresco: that of a KKK member smoking a joint. After an enlightening meeting with local African-American leaders Ben gracefully found a way to alter his composition, but at no expense to his vision.

Ben has moved onto other equally challenging commissions, but it is the St. Peter's fresco, and its story as related by Richard Maschal, that places Ben Long as a maestro at the fore of an American renaissance of this ancient technique, the genuine article, just beginning to hit his stride.

the best book by a great dad!.......1999-03-15

Being the author's daughter, I was surprised to find it listed when I took a search on my last name. I was equally surprised to see such a great review!

Aside from my obvious inclinations, this really is a great book. Witty, culturally far-reaching, honest, and wonderfully crafted, it is a fascinating portrait of a man who surely mirrors the tempestuous Michaelangelo. Ben Long is a fabulously challenging man, angry, intelligent, even sexy. Read this book and learn about art, religious tradition, and the creative landscape of America ...

ancient technique (fresco) meets modern America.......1998-03-31

I dipped into this book because I'm interested in Italy and wanted to learn a little about fresco technique (but I wanted to learn it painlessly, which for me means tucked inside a narrative instead of laid out in a textbook). But I found that I stayed with the whole story, genuinely interested in the personalities and the outcome of the project, a religious fresco executed in Charlotte, North Carolina in the late 1980s.

Clearly Ben Long is a difficult albeit talented man, but just as clearly he seems willing to do what he must to keep fresco alive. We read stories of earlier musicians and artists (Mozart and Renaissance painter Lorenzo Lotto come immediately to mind) who produce a work and present it, uncertain the agreed-upon compensation will be forthcoming or that there will be any at all. Much of Long's work has followed the same pattern: slow, steady execution of a religious fresco, in Italy or the United States, followed by a small "purse" from a grateful priest. The North Carolina project followed by the author in this book was, by design, more lucrative and more modern, but the negotiating, the arguments, the temporary withholding of final compensation, the frayed nerves, the eager acolytes working just for the experience--all of it could have happened 400 years ago. And just when you're starting to realize this, the author deftly segues into the relationship between Pope Julius II and Michelangelo during the frescoing of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

It's refreshing to see such a quiet subject get such careful, journalistic treatment. There are no fireworks here, just a well-told story of interest to those with a fascination with the making of art, with Italy, with fresco in particular, and with the intersection of history and modern times.

As a first time TV show co-producer, I wanted a simple approach on learning the basics of TV directing and producing. This book has given me everything I needed to start understanding the technical aspects of the business. Now I can express my ideas more clearly to the show director and the crew, and even though this is not my primary career this book has made easier my introduction in the business.

Easy to read and broad in its focus.......2001-11-30

First and perhaps most important, this book is easy to read. It doesn't talk about technical things, but instead goes right to the heart of the matter: what you have to know if you're going to direct or produce a program. It also covers a broad range of shows--almost every format except sports and game shows. For the most part it describes multiple camera television directing, but that's used as a basis for understanding single camera TV. And there are chapters in which single camera television plays a significant role, most notably when Cury goes into documentary and PSA directing. I particularly liked the "who's who" at the facility, which covers the functions of those who work in television--from the executive producer to talent.

I found the Treo manual very helpful and much more detailed than the owners manual. The tips I discovered were more than worth the price of the book. I recommend it to all Treo owners!

Treo 700P Second Edition.......2007-01-08

This book covers the things that should have been covered by the manuals that come with the Treo. Well illustrated and clearly written, but there is no real "extra" material inside. It does cover some of the accessories and software available from the secondary market however.
I guess I was hoping for some of the tricks and hacks that I've seen on the web to be collected into this book.
If you are new to the Treo and Palm OS, this is still a good resource to learn with.

Even when you thought you knew it all... there's more!.......2004-07-14

I'll admit it. I'm an early adapter. I try (sometimes unsuccessfully) to wait at least a month before buying the latest toy. I think I managed 3 weeks with my Treo600. So by the time I got this book, I'd had it a good 8 months and I honestly thought I'd figured out all the tricks. Wrongo!

I first skipped here and there - actually, I first looked for my name. [Disclaimer, there is a little sidebar about my using my Treo for mobblogging - the authors posted a request for examples of interesting Treo use and I submitted it. My sidebar is one of the very many from real people who provide great examples.]

But, soon, I gave up and just read the thing from cover to cover. I would read a tip, whip out my Treo and give it a try and go on to the next one. I love learning new stuff.

But, I think the person who is a bit anxious about trying new things and/or a little afraid of their new Treo600 is the person who really really needs this book. It is very easy to follow. Very friendly. Very informative. And a great reference.
