Introduced in Bolivia a little over a decade ago, social funds have become a key community-led poverty reduction tool. A departure from traditional government-sponsored approaches, social funds encourage communities and local institutions to take the lead in identifying and carrying out small-scale investments, generally in social infrastructure such as schools, health clinics, and small-scale water supply and sanitation. The social fund model has proved to be a dynamic, replicable approach, easily adapted and scaled up in diverse countries around the world. In Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia, social funds have now absorbed close to $10 billion in foreign and domestic financing. Despite their popularity, the effectiveness of social funds as a mechanism for improving welfare has remained largely unmeasured. This study is the first systematic cross-country impact evaluation of social funds using survey data and accepted evaluation methodologies. The research, carried out in Armenia, Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, and Zambia, addresses four fundamental questions: Do social funds reach poor areas and poor households? Do social funds deliver high-quality, sustainable investments? Do social funds affect living standards? How cost-efficient are social funds and the investments they finance, compared with other delivery mechanisms? Brilliant! .......2007-10-18

An excellent exposition of revolutionary syndicalist thought, quite in contradiction to statist Marxism, and infused with the spirit of the labor movement. Long before Michael Foucault, Georges Sorel pointed out that ethics are determined by the ruling class.

Those who are squeamish about Sorel's unabashed enthusiasm for class violence will remember that all societies have been ushered in with violence. The present capitalist society was created in bloody revolutions that saw the rebelling bourgeoisie cutting off the heads of their fuedal masters left right and center! America is founded on revolution. France is founded on revolution. Britain is founded on (limited) revolution.

In class terms, Sorel argues, might makes right. And, as the pragmatic bourgeois revolutionary Mao put it, power comes from the barrel of a gun.

A book that influenced our time.......2007-09-09

This a book that influenced both communism and fascism. Although it was written from the perspective of the political left, its most enthusiastic reader was probably Benito Mussolini. It shows the compatibility of certain aspects of communism and fascism. It is surprising that it is not widely studied in courses on fascism. For more books on totalitarianism I have created a Listmania list.

The book itself is not easy to read. It, however, is important to read this in order to get an understanding on underlying philosophical forces that produced modern totalitarianism.

The power of myths, the importance of choosing wisely.......2003-07-07

"Reflections on violence" was written in 1908 by Georges Sorel, and gives us a good idea of what revolutionary syndicalism was like to him. Even if this book isn't widely read, it is quite important in the history of political ideas.

"Reflections on Violence" is a little difficult to read sometimes, because it was the result of many articles that the author had written regarding many subjects. When he finally put them together he didn't rewrite them, because he believed that to be good, reading must be an exercise that implies a certain amount of work. Well, as a matter of fact he achieved that aim, but all the same the book is well worth the effort.

In "Reflections on violence" Sorel gives great importance to the idea of social myth, because according to him, myths can lead everybody's energy towards a given aim. In his opinion, there is an enormous difference between myths and utopias, due to the fact that myths don't only describe an ideal, but try to reach it. Through utopia you tear yourself from the world, with a myth you transform it (and transforming it you find yourself, because man is creative activity).

Sorel thinks that myths are not rational, and because of that they cannot be judged intellectually. One of the myths he studies is the myth of the general strike. He believed that particular myth could give the proletariat (through syndicalism) enough strenght to fight against the bourgeoisie. Sorel also affirms that violence is positive, because while force gives the workers chains, the violence directed at that force frees them.

In conclusion, I must say I liked this book. When he highlights the importance of myth, I guess he also somehow stresses the tendency human beings have to dedicate their life to an ideal, a cause. And that ideal is likely to be of the utmost importance to us, because our beliefs make us. That is the reason why it is so important to choose the right ideal, the right cause.

The problem is that Sorel doesn't measure the truth of each myth, but merely its efficacy, and by doing so opens the way for all kind of disasters. How can we expect even a little bit of rationality from social life if the ultimate end of that life cannot be evaluated rationally?. And if we cannot understand intellectually our aim (the myth), how can we realise if it is legitimate?. If you can, read this book... It'll make you think !!!

Fascinating Museum Piece.......2002-03-08

Sorel's most famous work is an interesting conflation of Marxism and XIXth century Romanticism. Like most socialist literature it idealizes the "worker" as an heroic figure standing astride history.

The book advocates syndicalism (a system in which industrial workers' unions are the vehicles of political power), but it eschews the pseudoscientific rhetoric favored by Marx and Lenin. Sorel is not particularly strong on economics, and he knows it.

What he does know is cultural history and he advocates political rebellion through violence and mythmaking. The book is essentially a broadside against Jaures and the calculative, creeping parliamentary socialism of fin de siecle France. He finds Jaures and his methods to be too meek and compromising. He characterizes parliamentarism (accurately) as a system of endless debate, dealmaking and "selling out". Sorel advocates revolutionary violence as a means to both power and the creation of a new mythic order. He correctly observes that the Jacobins were violent and bloody, yet they managed to create a mythology for the French Revolution which still held a strong cultural resonance in his day.

Direct action, mythmaking and ruthless bloodshed were the means Sorel recommended for revolution. His ideas went largely unacted upon in France, but the anarchosyndicalists of Spain took him quite seriously.

His greatest disciple however, was a young socialist named Benito Mussolini. Mussolini's Fascist movement was based upon direct action and inspired by a myth of a resurgent Roman Empire. Mussolini made explicit reference, again and again, to the importance of myth in revolutionary struggle.

Sorel inadvertently became the prophet of revolutionary Fascism.

Two asides: (a) there is no reason for corporate executives to keep this book by their bedsides - it contains nothing of economic value, and its ideology is thoroughly exhausted and devoid of contemporary relevance; (b) Sorel is one of the few French intellectuals besides Tocqueville who seemed to have a healthy respect for America and the American economic miracle.

Acceptable Violence - ?.......2000-02-14

This book, should be studies in conjunction with books on violence. It illuminates that despite today's pacifity within the labour movement, circumstances (as exist in these modern times), justify resorting to 'activism'. A reading of Sorel's expose of the machinations of Socialists, the Middle Classes, et al clearly show that in these years of 'Neo-Liberalist' ideology and the guises of Capitalism under the new cloak of 'Globalisation' ..... nothing has changed for the great swaith of working poor, dumbing down or buying off Trade Unions etc etc.

This book should be required reading of anyone who aspires to a pro-active approach to conditions surrounding work and Labour.

It would be useful for corporate executives and polticians to keep this book permanently by their bedsides.

This classic in the field of music analysis is a great source of ideas for anyone interested in serious study of Beethoven's symphonies. George Grove is one of the great musicologists of the 19th century; he is also the editor of the well-known "Dictionary of Music and Musicians."
An intermediate level of musical knowledge is necessary to appreciate the text. It is full of musical illustrations, but the terminology Grove uses is probably not too jargony for a knowledgeable lay-reader or amateur musician.
Grove also includes biographical information along with the analyses, making for a great overview of or introduction to Beethoven's symphonies.

A Classic Of Music Analysis.......2004-01-05

This is a reprint of the 3rd edition of 1898, but that fact should not deter anyone from purchasing it. It remains an excellent analysis of Beethoven's 9 symphonies. Along with copious music quotations of the symphonies, the author has integrated some history of Beethoven's historical times and quotes letters and anecdotes that reveal not only the music but the personality of this composer.

The author's knowledge of the scores of the symphonies is extraordinary. For anyone with more than a passing interest in the symphonies of Beethoven, I can't think of a better book for the money. While it is impossible to name any composer as the greatest, Beethoven must be acknowledged as one of the great architects of musical form and expression. George Grove's book underlines the genius of this composer, and is highly recommended

Good, but Could Have Been Great.......2006-08-15

Granted with a title like "How Underdog Was Born", one shouldn't expect much about Total Television's other series like "King Leonardo" and "Tennessee Tuxedo", but it's here! That's the good thing. The bad thing is that the book ends abruptly after the creation of Underdog save for a couple of paragraphs about "Commander McBragg" and "Klondike Kat". Then there's a fast forward to the aborted attempt to make new "Underdog" episodes. What isn't here is what happened after "Underdog", but I guess that could be saved for the sequel? I am glad, however, that it is written by two of the original creators of the series, so it is a first hand view of what really happened.

Total Waste of Time!.......2006-01-04

I've been an Underdog fan for years. I've always loved the dry sense of humor and great voices. Unfortunately, this book does not convey any of this. It spends more time on what the creators ate and drank while creating the series than any great insights on the creative process.

I was also extremely disappointed in the art work in the book. For a book on Underdog, there's no pictures of Underdog except for the cover. There are incredibly boring pictures of offices, restaurants and famous people like Marilyn Monroe who don't need explanation.

Don't waste your money on this one!

The Creative Process, History Lesson and Superhero Insights.......2005-01-24

I picked up this book for the simple reason I am still an Underdog fan and that it promised insight to how he got his beginnings. If you're looking for a book about the Underdog cartoon character or art, this may not be your first choice. There's a lot of great stuff about Underdog, but this accessible read goes well beyond what we saw on the screen.

First, the story is an honest and real look at the creative process - how words become ideas and ideas combine with other ideas, and then in steps the guy who's writing the checks, and some new ideas... -- until at the end, in this case, you have Underdog.

I was struck by the authors' honesty - ie: meetings in a station wagon to a sea of martini's - which helps build a sense of transparency. I really felt that these men are sharing their experience without an agenda for their ego or legacy. Note the way they handle who ended up proposing the Underdog name with a mutual quote. I found the creative process element of the book energizing as I relate to it professionally.

Now, I shouldn't be surprised that Biggers and Stover, the team that conceived Underdog on the shoulders of another creation, Tennessee Tuxedo (they would have been remise not to have included a brief history) would carefully tuck away the educational element of this book. Yet I found myself so engaged in the story of how Underdog was created that it wasn't nearly until the end of the book did I realize that I was actually learning about the early days of animated television.

Having grown up with most of those shows and experienced this period of television differently, it was an interesting perspective to see it as the birth of something so common in contemporary life. I still love animated television just as much as I still love Underdog.

Which is why I was delighted with what this book had to say about his humble beginnings. I highly recommend The Underdog Bible to any fan (Afterward) - a collection of documents Biggers and Stover used to guide the creation of the series. It includes a history of Underdog - from his beginnings in West Virginia to the death of his mother - a moving and revealing look at the character and morals in which the cartoon dog was based.

The story holds plenty of other gems as well, including the inside answer of why a frog in the famous line: "Not plane. Nor bird. Nor even frog." It's not just because it rhymes with dog, as I always was content to believe. And you'll finally learn why Underdog always spoke in rhyme. And my lurking suspicion that maybe, just maybe, Sweet Polly might not be as sweet as she seems, was, at least in part, validated.

I suppose I could just as easily give you the answers... but there's a context to all of it. That's the true beauty of this story, how all of these things converged: animation, television, the evolution of the advertising industry... and the creative process of two men that led to the birth of Underdog. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Great Book for Web Developers or Administrators.......2005-04-03

This book is great if you develop websites, especially if you maintain a webserver. I am fairly well versed on basic security measures, but there was alot of stuff in this book that I didn't know. Its not a book for someone who is looking for an in-depth detailed book about network security, but its a really good overview of web attacks and how to avoid being hit.

The book is also well written, and easy and fun to read. The writers do a good job of making the content fun and entertaining. You won't be disapointed with this book unless you are already very familiar with many different types of web attacks.

Rehash of basic web technologies.......2004-08-06

I was disappointed in what this book had to offer. I was hoping for a full text of web exploits and how to defend against them. Instead the first half of the book covers information such as languages of the web and how to read URL's. It is as if the author assumes the reader has no knowledge of web technologies and systems. I am finding this to be a common problem with network security books, they are written for readers with little real knowledge of networking, let alone network security. Surly they sell many copies because "hacking" is in the title though.
This is not the book for the serious IT professional, you would do better to look elsewhere for security insights.

If you are responsible for a web site, get this book.......2004-03-29

This no-fluff book weighs in at just under 500 pages that are guaranteed to quell any feelings of complacency you may have about the safety of your website. One of the gnawing concerns I live with is that my website will be hacked. I can't say this book made me feel better about that fear, but it brought to light a number of things to talk to my people about. Using real-world examples, it explains the kinds of openings hackers look for, and the ways they exploit those openings to do their damage. In some senses, this book is not just a warning, it is also a how-to for Internet security.

The general premise of this book is that no one is safe from attack, and if you're not already a victim, that's only a matter your good luck so far. Read this book. Study it carefully. Keep it on the nearest, most convenient bookshelf. New kinds of attacks are being developed all the time. But this book will prepare you for what's out there so far, and give you some insight into the kinds of things to watch for in the future.

This is a pretty informative book on hacking. After reading this book you will have a good overview of many different attacks and defenses. It's a great book for beginners and an entertaining read.
