    Book Description

This book uses household survey data from five Central Asian countries to analyze the important consequences of, and elements that constitute, the creation of a market economy. The countries studied - Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan - had taken minimal action towards creating a market economy before the dissolution of the USSR in late 1991. From similar initial conditions they have pursued different post-independence economic strategies, making them ideal candidates for comparative analysis.

The pivotal question concerns the determination of living standards. Who gained and who lost from the transition to a market economy? Which characteristics are rewarded in a new market economy? How do national policies and other systematic factors affect these outcomes? The authors also address other important issues that have emerged during transition debates: the position of women and the role of small businesses. The book analyzes the gender issue in the narrow, but significant, sense of what happened to women in the labor market and examines the characteristics of households with non-farm businesses.

This book will prove invaluable to academics and researchers of Asian studies and particularly those with an interest in economic development and labor economics within the region.

Consequences Of Creating A Market Economy: Evidence From Household Surveys In Central Asia collects household survey data from five Central Asian countries - Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - each put forth some effort toward creating a market economy before the breakup of the USSR in late 1991. Each nation began with similar conditions, yet pursued a different economic strategy after receiving independence. The resulting data concerning living standards, winners and losers in the transition to a market economy, the influence of national policies and other systemic factors, women's issues in the new labor market, and much more helps paint a revealing picture of the economic challenges facing struggling nations today. Evaluations of the statistical data do have a high level of complexity and involve calculus; Conseq-uences Of Creating A Market Economy is unquestionably meant for advanced students and scholars. A revealing, insightful text, highly recommended.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) create jobs, spread technological progress, and contribute to economic and social well-being, while stimulating entrepreneurship. Their contribution to the economy is sometimes facilitated by government action. This report looks at how governments stimulate SME activity by looking at four aspects of that activity: financing the economic and regulatory environment developing management capabilities and increased access to markets. This edition of this annual report examines in particular stimulation of SMEs in OECD's new countries in Central Europe.

        Book Description

Now into its fourth edition, this perennial bestseller has been updated and revised to coincide with the band's 2004 World Tour. Kraftwerk's influence and place in the annals of music history is ever growing. This is the first, and still the best, biography.

Appearing in B-format for the first time, Bussy has included information about Kraftwerk's first new album in 16 years.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too Much Paranoia.......2007-01-31

There will probably never be a definitive biography of Kraftwerk, due to the growing reluctance over the years of Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider-Esleben to say anything about the band and the placement of seemingly formidable roadblocks in front of probing journalists (and former band members).

Pascal Bussy comes as close as any writer in this book, which was originally published in 1993 and has been updated several times. What Bussy has is a huge jigsaw puzzle of information and facts culled from many sources - including Hutter and Schneider-Esleben when they did grant interviews in the early years - and puts the story together to bring the three elements in the sub-title together.

Particularly interesting is the history of the German music scene of the 1960s and 1970s, since no band or musician is in a vacuum when it comes to the early influences that launches a professional career.

Though the 2004 world tour was an artistic success, Bussy hints at what a possible "tour" could look like in the future. It truly may be more fun to compute.

Kraftwerk: Man, Machine and Music, may leave some readers wanting more tangible information, especially about the technical/experimental work done inside Kling Klang studio to achieve the band's sound & music. But until Hutter and Schneider-Esleben say more than the repetitive blips heard on Kraftwerk's official web site, Bussy's biography will remain the best observation at a legendary and mysterious group.

5 out of 5 stars Great Insight Into Kraftwerk !.......2006-11-26

Pascal Bussy brilliantly probes and lauds the rigid and creative worldview of Kraftwerk's brain, namely, Ralf Hutter. He is extremely aloof while also being a source of goodwill. Bussy unveils that the dynamic Ralf Hutter is an environmentalist, vegetarian and indomitable biker. This book is a great biography about a very secretive and influential band. Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream are Germany's paramount bands.Ralf Hutter and Edgar Froese are equally multitalented and magnificent.

        5 out of 5 stars Insight.......2006-11-15

A real insight into the 'Kraftwerk'!
No wonder that the band has not allowed this book to be published in German in Germany, there are way to many secrets into their way of life and work revealed here.
The book deals with the history of the band in realtion to Germanys history and why Kraftwerk have become the icon in Electronic Music today.
If you want to know more about the people behind the robots, read this book....

4 out of 5 stars Brisk, efficient biography.......2005-09-29

A "must" if you are at all interested in the band. My only criticism would be that it doesn't really dig that deep - but, as mentioned in other reviews, and by Bussy himself, this is due to the lack of information coming from the band themselves rather than a lack of effort and research. This aside, a fascinating look into the Kraftwerk world. I thoroughly enjoyed it - highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Seclusion is not so secluded, anymore.......2004-09-05

Kraftwerk may be one of the few popular bands in the world who have retained a mysterious aura around them. Although it is becoming evident now, thanks partly to Pascal Bussy's work under review here, that this image was engineered by them as a kind of Kraftwerk ethos and band creed, it is also one of their hallmarks-that they did not sell out to the media and popularity contests, retaining their uniqueness while still influencing hordes of bands since the mid-1970s, when they first sprang into prominence in Germany and beyond. The founding members of the band, Messrs Ralf Huetter and Florian Schneider, rarely give interviews to this day, are very isolated and private individuals; in recent years, Kraftwerk as a band has churned out close to nothing in terms of releases, leaving widening gaps between their releases. Before their amazing 1974 LP and single "Autobahn," they played a unique brand of "krautrock" music that they have since disowned-their three LPs from this period are still not officially available on CD, and they don't play songs from this era in their concerts.

In August 2003, this status-quo changed momentarily, when Kraftwerk released an all-new LP entitled Tour de France Soundtracks, though anyone remotely familiar with their releases would have found that this LP basically echoed what they had released back in 1983 as a single, of the same title and cover artwork! Indeed, the song "Tour de France," tucked into the back of the LP, was a re-recording and remixing of the same "Tour de France" song released in 1983. They toured; one begs to ask the question of whether or not there will be more from Kraftwerk after this or not; their last LP before this came out in 1991, with no light shed on what went on for twelve long years.

Bussy's biography of the band was first published in 1993; it was subsequently revised in 2001, and another 2004 edition is in the offing. It is a revealing and fascinating portrait of what Bussy terms "one of the most fascinatingly beguiling and influential music groups of all time" (p. 12). It traces the origins of Kraftwerk, not only with its founding members, but also in the musical scene of Germany in the late 1960s and early `70s; hence, it is also an interesting piece of cultural history. The history of Kraftwerk itself is also traced, mostly in the context of their LP releases (of which there are eleven, not including singles). Bussy has succeeded in essentially restoring (or disclosing, depending on your viewpoint) the humanity behind the "Man Machines" or "Robots" from Düsseldorf.

His biography, understandably, remains limited by Kraftwerk's own self-secrecy, so the reader seeking to find juicy details of their working methods in the Kling Klang studio, or what really happened to the planned 1983 Technopop LP and its relationship to the 1986 Electric Café LP, for example, will not glean much because Huetter and Schneider have not exactly been forthright about such things. Details about their personalities had to be pieced together through second-hand testimony, which is always a little shaky for accuracy. It was up to Bussy to investigate such things on his own; indeed, in the Preface to the 2001 edition, he compared his efforts to a police investigation, where one clue would somehow turn up more clues to piece the Kraftwerk enigma together. It appears that the most social and open band member was Karl Bartos, who left in 1990, give or take, frustrated by the slow pace of music-making stemming from his day job. An aside: one should check out Bartos' solo work under his band name Electric Music, and also his self-named 2003 solo release.

Bussy, despite these shortcomings, has succeeded in spotlighting Kraftwerk. His writing is also excellent, so there is no fear of reading a dry, turgid account. Like Kraftwerk's music, Bussy's biography shall definitely shine on. Every fan should take the time to read this book.

          Book Description

Entertainers were the first group of successful women to capture the public eye, taking to the stage in vaudeville and film and redefining their place in society. June Sochen introduces the white, African American, and Latina women who danced on Broadway, fell on bananas in silent films, and wisecracked in smoky clubs, as well as the modern icons of today's movies and popular music.

Sochen considers such women as Mae West, Bette Davis, Shirley Temple, Pam Grier, Lucille Ball, and Mary Tyler Moore to discover what show business did for them and what they did for the world of entertainment. She places each woman within the context of her time and talks about her relationship with dominant female stereotypes.

In examining how they worked within or transformed particular genres and how their personal and public lives affected their careers, From Mae to Madonna casts the spotlight on a series of remarkable women and their dramatic effect on America's popular culture.

          Book Description

On television he was just a cop doing his job. But Jack Webb, in his low-key tough-guy approach in portraying Los Angeles police sergeant, Joe Friday, became an American cult hero. Today, Dragnet continues to appear on cable and syndicated television as a result of Jack Webb's single-minded determination and his unflagging attention to detail. His non-stop work ethic produced some of television's greatest moments, but it also took a devastating toll on his personal and professional relationships.

This authorized biography recalls how Webb grew up in poverty but was able to use his creative talents to find success in high school and in the Army Air Corps. After being discharged, Webb found a position as a local radio announcer in San Francisco and was recruited to do the voice of a hard-boiled San Francisco detective for a weekly program. The popularity of Pat Novak for Hire led to other radio jobs in the forties, culminating in Jack's creation of Dragnet. The success of Dragnet came from its accurate depiction of the life of a regular policeman, with stories based on files found in the Los Angeles Police Department archives.

When television's popularity increased Webb successfully transitioned the Dragnet series to the small screen and experienced unprecedented popularity. Webb would go on to produce great television classics such as Adam-12 and Emergency. When he passed away in 1982, he had left behind a television legacy of gritty realism that lives on today.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Facts, Ma'am.......2004-07-15

Please tell the authors that I really enjoyed their book. Thank you so much for writing about one of my favorite TV detectives. It's very interesting. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Just the facts, little critical analysis.......2002-01-10

As an authorized biography, and one written in collaboration (before her death) with Webb's daughter, it's not surprising that this volume is both informative of the minutiae of Webb's life and is almost completely uncritical of the man, his working methods, his relationships, and his works.

More annoying is the very poor organization. Facts are presented with little relationship to each other, and very little of a negative or human nature is passed along. Chronology is more or less tossed out the window. Particular works are referred to out of order, and rarely is much detail given about the shows themselves, or Webb's creative choices. Anecdotes are chock-a-block with each other, with paragraphs inserted, apparently at random, of laundry lists of Webb's cars, or his favorite foods.

Excessive space is given to mini-biographies of some of the major players in Webb's life -- and contributors to the book. Do we really need to know the genesis of Bobby Troup's "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" in a biography of Jack Webb?

The book's notes and bibliography are extensive, and it's clear the authors had good access to any number of important people. I only wish they had done a better job of giving us a better organized work, and had taken a more analytical approach to Webb and his work, rather than a 280-page press release of his life.

          5 out of 5 stars The humanity, triumphs, & foibles behind a well-known figure.......2001-08-16

In his famous role as Joe Friday on the syndicated television series Dragnet, as well as later TV classics Adam-12 and Emergency, Jack Webb has become a beloved figure to more than one generations. This authorized biography, for which author Dan Moyer spent years working with Webb's daughter Stacy to research her father's life, describes Jack Webb's life from a hard childhood to an early radio career and finally stardom. Revealing Jack Webb as an artist personality whose passion for his craft sometimes caused problems in his relationship, Just The Facts, Ma'am: The Authorized Biography Of Jack Webb shows the humanity, triumphs, and foibles behind a well-known cult figure.

5 out of 5 stars Great book of TV Legend.......2001-07-23

As one of Jack Webb's Mark VII and "Adam-12" producers, I want to applaud the authors for writing, "Just the Facts, Ma'am. The Authorized Biography of Jack Webb." The book, among many subjects, includes interesting information about Webb's talented and beautiful first wife Julie London and her second husband, jazz great Bobby Troup. The book brought other treasured memories back to me, such as my being the best man at Webb's marriage to the beautiful Jackie Loughery, Miss USA and the leading lady in Webb's film, "The D.I." Webb's daughter Stacy greatly contributed to this book and I was pleased to assist and advise the authors in the completion of this work. Much attention is given to Jack's radio days, and his TV "Dragnet," "Adam-12," "Emergency," and many other Mark VII projects many persons know little about. The book covers all of Webb's movies, and offers personal and unknown insights about Jack Webb. Numerous photographs were generously offered by Jack's closet family members and friends. They along with the story documentation, and chronology of Webb's life enhance this much needed biography of one of Hollywood's most innovative film pioneers. I highly recommend this authorized biography, and accurate book about my friend and television legend-Jack Webb. "Just the Fact's, Ma'am" is an enjoyable and enlightening read.

3 out of 5 stars The Man behind the badge.......2001-06-04

A fairly well written biography of one of Americas most loved and alsomost parodied TV cops. A good insight into the man behind the myth with lots of photographs. Things may not always be phrased just right in the book but you will come away with a greater understanding of Webb the man and perhaps even a greater appreciation of his work. For Webb fans a definite read.

3 out of 5 stars Almost the same book as "Professional Palm OS programming".......2007-01-09

Perhaps this was my bad planning but I purchased this book after having already purchased the "Professional Palm OS programming" book by the same author. Don't get me wrong, I assume any book by the same author will contain some of the same information but this book duplicated more than HALF of the same material from the other book. I was hoping to read something new to cover what the other book didn't but instead I found myself reading the same thing.

Let this be a lesson to those who pay closer attention to what they purchase. This book is helpful but not any more helpful than the other book "Professional Palm OS programming". I guess I'll just have to use the Palm example programs to learn the remainder of what I need to know.

Maybe I'll write my own book some day. Yeah.. I guess that might not happen any time soon (or until I take a class in school or something).

4 out of 5 stars Good choice for learing Palm OS.......2005-10-16

Well organized, understandable, and has a good index. Associated web site also useful.

          4 out of 5 stars a must read for programming a palm.......2005-05-01

This is a "must read" for people programming or interested in programming apps for the palm.

          BUT:

a.- Does not cover Palm Developer Suite (Eclipse).
b.- It covers the Codewarrior and AFAIK this is not available anymore (at least for now) from Metrowerks.
c.- Even if it says "covers palm os 5" you will also need to read all the newest info from Palm to get a real feeling of "what's new" with OS 5.

Again, I insist, is a MUST READ, but it will not be your only reference.

1 star goes down because of what I mentioned before.
4 stars go up because of I did NOT mention. This is a really great reference for Palm OS Programming.

          5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2004-12-03

I've been a programmer for 10 years but was new to the Palm OS development environment when I bought this book. It shaved weeks off of my development time. While there is a huge amount of free Palm OS development information online, the online information is geared towards those that are already experienced in the field. There is a paucity of comprehensive, introductory information. This book serves that function excellently. Each topic is introduced in a very understandable manner, while also being discussed in great depth. When embarking on a new area of Palm Programming, this is a great place to start.

Regarding the review beating up this book for lacking more examples and reference information, this type of information is amply supplied by PalmSource.com, user groups, and other sources, all for free and all in digital format. PalmSource.com alone released several reference volumes in searchable PDF format that are a great compliment. It would be a waste of paper to put it in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Should be on your bookshelf,.......2004-01-13

Along with "Palm OS Programming: The Developers' Guide", this is a must have addition to your bookshelf if you wish to be proficient in devloping Palm applications. It is more up to date than the other book; but is complemtary to it. With the two books together, all aspects of Palm programming for the serious developer are handled. But beware, this is not a trivial beginners book.
