Book Description
A decade after the implementation of the initial wave of economic reforms in India, the process of transforming the country into a fully developed market economy continues. A hallmark of the globalized economy is its ability to sustain competitive efficiency which, in turn, can lead to enhanced growth. This important new book gauges how far India has been successful in achieving this goal by implementing the correct economic reform measures.
There is a severe lack of solid analytical evidence or rigorous scientific studies on the success of India's economic reforms. The expert authors attempt to redress this imbalance with a thorough analysis of key aspects of the state of the Indian economy since 1991. Keeping poverty reduction as the major objective, they comprehensively discuss and identify further reform measures which are vital in the monetary, fiscal and agriculture sectors in order to maintain and improve the momentum of growth. When compared with East Asian countries including China, India's lack-luster growth performance indicates that the task of reform is far from over. The authors argue that India needs to pursue its reform process much more vigorously at both the central and state levels in order to achieve its full growth potential.
Providing a comprehensive assessment of the impact of economic reforms in India, this book will appeal to policymakers, researchers and students with an interest in developing economies. Political scientists as well as economists in the fields of liberalization and international development will also find this an engaging and enlightening volume.

Book Description
Work is at the core of human existence: it is sustenance, security, survival. Through work we find fulfillment, dignity, and affiliation; conversely, we risk criticism and dissatisfaction and, at worst, degradation and alienation. Not surprisingly, the story of laborwhich comprises passionate struggles and triumphs as well as dehumanizing forceshas figured largely in the arts.
_At Work: The Art of California Labor_ delivers a powerful examination of labor history in California since the turn of the twentieth century. This is a visual journey that follows early events and conditions, from the rise of statewide organized labor to the changing demographics of the wartime workforce; from the zenith of the California Labor School to the farm workers' movement; from the disenfranchisement of workers in the service economy to the potent effects of globalization felt at the end of the twentieth century. This compilation of images provides a heady insight into one of the most fundamental components of our daily lives and shows how our collective identity has evolved over time.

With all respect you have gotten misinformation on Easttom.......2000-04-04
Sherman E. Easttom, the camp committee chairman at the Weedpatch Camp in the era around the first half of 1936, was introduced to John Steinbeck at The Arvin Sanitary Camp by Tom Collins.Numerous biographers have said Steinbeck used the family of Sherman E. Easttom as the model for the Joad Family as portrayed in the Steinbeck Novel THE GRAPES OF WRATH, 1939. What Ms.Loftis misrepresented in her book was that Sherman E. Easttom wrote a letter to Paul Taylor, in regards to the democratic camper goverment which was set up by either the Farm Security Administration or its predecessor agency which planned and built the first two Sanitary Units in 1935 the first in Marysville, CA and the second in Arvin, CA. Ms. Loftis, erroneously claims to have referenced a source she found somewhere in the National Archives, to the effect that Sherman E. Easttom wrote a letter to Paul Taylor, a higher up at the Farm Security Administration headquarters in San Fancisco,CA. Being the grandson of Sherman E. Easttom, it is common knowledge in the Easttom Family that Sherman E. Easttom could not read or write and was color blind.I do not slight Anne Loftis for using my grandfather's name, however I do mind the misinformation that is being disseminated by writers who have the occasion to run across Sherman E. Easttom's role in the writing by Steinbeck of THE GRAPES OF WRATH,1939. Ms. Loftis corroborated with the well known Steinbeck biographer, Jackson J. Benson in 1980 on a piece JOHN STEINBECK AND FARM LABOR UNIONIZATION; THE BACKGROUND OF IN DUIOUS BATTLE, by Benson and Anne Loftis, American Literature, 52 (May 1980): 194-223. Mr Benson also published his well reviewed book, THE TRUE ADVENTURES OF JOHN STEINBECK, WRITER (New York: Viking, 1984; London: Heinemann, 1984).In this book which which has been heralded as the definitive "authorized biography" of John Steinbeck as it was indeed cleared by the Steinbeck Family and thus offered Benson an entree into the secretive life of Steinbeck and his friends. Benson disseminated misinformation about Sherman E. Easttom and went further to name Easttom's son, namely, Sammie F. Eastton, (note there was variation in the family as to the exact spelling of the surname) as a "...fugitve from the law and hiding out in Lamont." Benson and Anne Loftis engaged in the same type of name dropping in the writing of ,THE BACKGROUND OF "IN DUBIOUS BATTLE". I would remind one that the use of the word "fugitive" connotes a fleeing from or flight from justice. My Uncle whom Benson claimed was the model for Tom Joad was only 17 years old in the summer of 1936 when the talks between Sherman E. Easttom and John Steinbeck took place. My Uncle could not have been a "fugitive" in any common understanding of the use of the word , because he was a juvenile at the time Benson claims he was a "...fugitive from the law". Again I bear no ill will to any of the Steinbeck researchers, but only wish to bring forward the factual account according to the Easttom Family.

Sources and Superb Illustrations.......2002-09-26
The "Blood of Noble Men" is a day by day account of the Alamo's 13 days told through the sources. Notice, I didn't say primary sources, since most (not all) information on the battle was written or reported afterward or second hand, sometimes long afterward, when it became apparent that the fall of the Alamo was becoming a defining, almost semi-religious event. It is extremely handy to have these sources arranged in a day by day series.
The illustrations are more than well researched, they are unique. No coonskin capped Davy bashing in Mexican heads with Ol' Betsy appears, but attempts at realism of a high order do appear. The equipment and uniform pages are better than Osprey's and the illustration of the Alamo takes into account all the drawings of the fort/mission in a synthesis that makes previous efforts look simplistic. Be warned however that all illustrations are in black and white and the descriptions provide color and context.
The book has a steep price, in my opinion. If you can afford it, buy it. If not, get your local library to get a copy.
Well worth the price.......2002-07-19
Knowing Alan Huffines personally, I can testify to his devotion to the topic. The Alamo is surrounded with myths, controversy and contradiction, and Alan takes each one head on. More often than not, many books about the seige focus on the Anglo defenders and ignore or even belittle the Mexican troops, but not so here. Having spent many years digging into the Mexican sources, I can appreciate what Huffines went through to get his facts. I'd rate this book among the "must haves".
I dis-agree with Gary Zaboly on a number of his sketches. Its unlikely that the Mexican rifle companies used the waist belt and powder horns like the British 95th as he shows. His drawings of the Baker rifle and the accountriments are a bit awkward. One sketch looks like it was done in a hurry and has problems with perspective. Still, he has done some outstanding work. Historians will probably never agree on the facts, but they will always 'Remember'.
good book with awsome drawings.......2002-03-07
dosen't really give you the authors view of the battle of the alamo, it's more a view from the people who were there. Mrs. Dickenson and De La Pena for example. still a good book with some pretty cool drawings.
An engrossing chronicle with extraordinary illustrations.......2001-11-14
Of all the books I have read about the Alamo battle, "The Blood of Noble Men" is the one which I find most engrossing. Alan Huffines' book derives its excitement from two sources: the words of the men (and women) who were actually there, and the vivid drawings by Gary Zaboly. Huffines gives us a day-by-day chronicle of the siege and fall of the Alamo which is constructed almost entirely from excerpts from first-hand accounts by Texians and Mexicans, soldiers and civilians. After a brief introduction to each chapter devoted to a single day's events, the participants speak for themselves. Sometimes the excerpts are only a sentence long, sometimes several paragraphs. Occasionally, multiple accounts from the same witness are given. What emerges is a fascinating picture of what happened, albeit a picture often with multiple conflicting layers. Disagreement among sources must be expected. Different persons will often come away from the same incident with wildly varying perceptions of what actually occurred. And the passage of time and inaccurate reporting will add their own distortions.
Through all of this, Huffines lets us read what the sources had to say and allows us to form our own ultimate judgments about their reliability, although in footnotes he does provide background for source authenticity (or the lack of it) and to problems of accuracy - this is one book where the reader should definitely not skip the footnotes. Because these accounts are drawn from both sides of the conflict, a good balance is achieved in telling a story which has often been reduced to a simple fairy tale of good versus evil.
Complementing these primary sources are the Gary Zaboly illustrations. Each chapter is accompanied by a large aerial view of San Antonio, with a numbered key to the points of interest relative to the action described. More dramatic are the drawings of various incidents mentioned in the text, realistic images of the people and place, based upon careful research. Combined with the participants' words, these pictures give a real "you are there" feeling to the book.
Although other books, such as J.R. Edmondson's "The Alamo Story", may better provide a larger context for the events of March, 1836, none of them in my opinion matches Huffines' work in making those events come alive.
conflicting analysis.......2001-03-28
This is a great starter book until you read the notation "foreword by Stephen Hardin". That immediately puts the reader on notice that there is a revisionsist attempt afoot. Thank goodness Mr. Huffines has tried to stay within historical bounds. He departs occasionaly by giving too much credit to conflicting Mexican sources and flagellating the like if they come from the Texian camp. The book has great illustrations but sadly comes up very short when it comes to the maps of the Alamo and old San Antonio. Why make the Alamo the central focal point and then when the book is bound you can not see the reference points because of the middle page bindery. It renders the illustrations worthless and frustrating. Like Hardin he lends credit to a mythical Texian reenforcement that has no record of ever having been made and tends to discredit his efforts. The factual record is great to have but the authors analysis lends itself to the revisionsist treatment that Texans everywhere have had to endure in the politically correct climate that prevails in academia today. I feel that had Huffines stuck to his original intent and left Hardin out of his research he would have come up with a much more balanced and accurate rendition of the gallant siege of those noble martyrs..
Book Description
Electronic $ Experimental Music is a second edition of a well-known text on the history of electronic music. Holmes' original book, first published in 1985, was a good beginner's introduction both to the theories of electronic sound and sound production and to the history of some of the earliest experiments in instrument building and composition.
Customer Reviews:
Broad approach.......2005-09-30
This book covers a large scope of musicians and technicians who were involved in electronic and electric music from the early 1900's to the present day. It is written in a fairly comprihensive style and centres upon the impacts that technology has had upon c20 music. A facinating read. Highly recommended for broad insights into the intentions of most electronic composers. I was rather happy to see a brief section on DJ Olive actually - this shows that Homles does not merely wish to stick to mentioning composers that the masses often only know by name. Splendid stuff. Couldn't find much wrong with it really. Take a preview of the contents page for yourself for a general idea.
this book is great.......2005-08-04
this book is an incredible study of electronic music. holmes discusses the history of electronic instruments, from the beginning, including the pre-theramin era, and finishing with some information regarding current electronic and experimental music.
although some sections of this book are a little dry, i feel the author did an acceptable job of conveying the excitement and freshness of the early electronic era. the section which discusses the creation of the soundtrack for the movie "forbidden planet" is just excellent. in fact, i purchased the movie (from amazon), so that i could hear the "strange" electronic tones which constitute the soundtrack.
being primarily interested in analog synthesizers, this book opened my eyes to an entirely new world of unpitched music experiments and compositions. in fact, a section is included on stockhausen, who was a heavy inspiration for the german band kraftwerk.
yes, i recommend this book, as a great amount of information is contained therein. in addition to mere data, this book really got me thinking about electronics and electronic music; specifically, the impact of analog synthesis on modern musical society.
Book Description
Electronic and Experimental Music details the history of electronic music throughout the world, and the people who created it. From the theory of sound production to key composers and instrument designers, this is a complete introduction to the genre from its early roots to the present technological explosion.
Key features to this revision include added pedagogy designed to make the book increasingly classroom-friendly, listening guides to illustrate important works of electronic music, and significant new coverage on the work of African American and women artists in the field of electronic music--two long neglected aspects of this genre.

A Random Note.......2006-12-28
When the experiments described in this book were conducted (mid 1950s), Hiller and Isaacson were both at the University of Illinois in Urbana--Hiller in the music school and Isaacson in the math department. Hiller had a PhD in chemistry and was hired initially by the chemistry department before receiving a graduate degree in music and migrating to the music faculty. He later moved to the music school at SUNY in Buffalo where he founded a program in computer music which still survives.
Hiller was aware of both Shannon's work in information theory and contemporary RCA attempts to synthesize musical sounds directly. Regardless of whether music was synthesized or produced by a conventional string quartet, Hiller's experiments were directed at how effectively one could translate traditional musicological rules of thumb about melody, harmony and counterpoint to programmed "constraints" on random sequences of pitch and rhythm. In plain speech, "Can one specify rules (program a computer) so that the resulting melody and harmony sounds like Bach (Mozart, Stravinsky . . . ) even though based on a random number generator?" The answer, though a bit surprising at first, is yes.
This is the first book about using a computer for musical composition. At the time, Hiller's agenda seemed radical to many in academic music circles. It remained so for thirty years--until roughly the last ten years of his life--when the Macintosh and MIDI made computers an accepted tool for both composers and performers.
The book is not an easy read. The computing tools then available were primitive, and because an attempt to use them for musical composition was so novel, the authors included extensive background material and justifications for their experimental agenda. Finally, both musicians and engineers comprised the intended audience, groups whose technical expertise hardly overlaps at all.

This treatise discusses the revolutionary work done on the Illiac computer at University of Illinois during the 1950's. A computing machine, programmed to compose music? The results, one piece played by string quartet, sound unmistakingly American. A rare book indeed, but essential for any computer musician's library.

Book Description
A one-of-a-kind analysis of ocean cruising!
In Ocean Travel and Cruising: A Cultural Analysis, noted author Arthur Asa Berger turns his critical eye to the phenomenon of ocean cruising. This academically solid yet reader-friendly book brings a multidisciplinary cultural studies approach to the subject, examining ocean cruising from economic, semiotic, sociological, psychoanalytic, and marketing perspectives, and offering insights not provided by the more traditional sociological approaches to the subject. You'll explore cruise demographics, the relationship between cruising and gender, the sociology of dining on cruise ships, hedonism and pleasure seeking, the "compulsion to cruise," consolidation in the industry, the exploitation of workers on cruise ships, and a great deal more.
Here's a section-by-section rundown of what's in store for you and your students in this one-of-a-kind new text:
"The Economics of Cruising" examines cruise categories, industry consolidation, worker exploitation, and ways that cruise lines make money aside from ticket sales. This section also compares the costs of cruises vs. land-based vacations and fills you in on the typical weekly food and beverage consumption of the Carnival line's complement of ships, which sheds light on how a cruise line can, for a mere $10, provide a food array that would cost a restaurant or hotel $33 to $40.
"Signs at SeaThe Semiotics of Cruising" provides you with a quick primer on semiotics and then discusses the cruise ship as a sign system and then breaks the system down to its component parts, discussing dining rooms, cabins/staterooms, dress codes, spatiality, luxury signifiers, the perceived elitism of the cruise experience, the role of photography, and more.
"A Sociological Analysis of Cruising" explores cruise demographics and their meaning, time budgeting on cruises, the sociology of dining, new trends in cruising, and the meaning of gender in relation to ocean cruising.
A particularly intriguing chapter is "A Psychoanalytic Interpretation of Cruising." Beginning with a look at the compulsion to cruise, this section explores cruising's relationship with the unconscious, the paradise myth, hedonism and pleasure seeking, the desire for unconditional love, psychological regression, and more.
In "Selling Smooth Sailing: Advertising and Marketing Cruises," you'll examine print advertisements from eight major cruise lines, look at what they have in common and what the differences are between the messages each cruise line hopes to convey via the style and content of their ads and brochures.
"Cruising (on) the Internet" looks at the intersection of the information superhighway with the world of cruising. You'll learn about the cruise lines' own Web sites, travel agency sites, Internet sites designed to rate and review cruises and cruise ships, and more.
"Notes from a Cruise Journal" shares the author's on-site reflections and impressions of a weeklong cruise from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and back.
Written in accessible, jargon-free language that will appeal to students at all levels, Ocean Travel and Cruising: A Cultural Analysis is the most recent of a very small selection of scholarly studies of ocean cruising available in English. Make it a part of your cultural studies, leisure studies, sociology, travel/tourism/hospitality, popular culture, or American studies course this semester!

Where's the Magic?.......2002-07-16
I did enjoy this book, but as someone who loves the show for it's magical moments and the things that tug at your heart, it falls short. Some examples are that it does nothing to highlight Ally and John's special friendship. (How could they leave out the "Weirdest Person in the Room" comment in the guide for episode 202 "They eat horses, don't they?") Like-minded fans will know what I mean. Also, in the big episode after Billy and Ally kiss, when Billy says "I can't go another day without making love to you", the book ONLY says they plan to meet at her apartment, and then goes on to Ally's guilt hallucinations. It says NOTHING of the emotional scene at Ally's place where she tells Billy how she has imagined this moment a hundred times, and then "starts to cry." AND, the recap of my very favorite episode, "Angels and Blimps" (where Haley Joel Osment guests as the little boy with leukemia) was also fairly shallow. The book has a lot of great features, but it just didn't get me emotionally like watching the show did.
Excellent Guide!.......2001-07-07
This book offers an excellent guide to every lover of "Ally McBeal"; for those who adore this heartwarmingly, funny show-you're sure to love to curl up and remember all those great McBealistic moments!
Way behind!!!.......2000-09-25
I think that it is a great book, but it only covers the 2 first seasons. And I have been looking after a second edition, with updatet a season guide. But without any luck.
I only give it 3 stars because, it if a good book, with good design, characters, and all the other things a good book needs. But then 3th and now the 4th season is in the air, is the book worthless.
But I hope that there is coming a new edition. Because without that is the book just like a history book without the second world war, and all what's coming after that.
Not perfect, but still recommended.......2000-01-04
There seem to be a lot of rather negative reviews about this official guide, but I have to admit that I rather enjoyed it. In fact, for those of you out there who like the show but are not obsessed with it to the point of taping and scrutinising every episode, I would recommend it. Just by flipping through the pages, a lot of smiles and good memories from favourite episodes are brought back to the reader by all the text and pictures. My personal favourites out of the special features included in the guide, are: Ally's Passionometer, the ISMS, the interview with David E. Kelley and Elaine's Inventions. Of course this guide is not perfect. I have many of the same complaints as the other reviewers have already pointed out (especially the lack of a list of guest stars/cameo appearances), but all this aside, I recommend 'Ally McBeal: The Official Guide' because of all the pleasure you will receive when reading it. And I guarantee that you will find yourself returning to it over and over again.
Well Done.......1999-12-29
As a die-hard fan of all things McBeal, I enjoyed this book a great deal but thought that it did fall short in some places. It was a handy reference for the music heard on the show, but I have to agree with one of my fellow reviewers - where was a listing of guest stars? Overall, not bad (it is worth the money), but could have been a little better.

Easy to Follow.......2004-11-29
The book is great on giving people an intuitive grasp on what a B-Spline or NURB is, allowing people to look at series of points and knowing "sorta" what the curve will look like.
The only serious lacking point is it's explanation of Knot Vectors and the reason they're ordered the way they are and what the numbers in them represent. It's a tricky subject to explain though, and the author made a good effort, but really needs to explain what the numbers DO persay. (Though if you play with the source and have a good eye it eventually makes sense). Anyway, excellent book and is the reason I'm the only person in my 3D Graphics class who knows how NURBS work (teacher included... "Just download code off the internet" he says, sheesh).
Anyway, BUY! It be good!
Excellent introduction.......2003-02-20
This is a first review I am ever writing. I was looking for a book that would give a clear explanation of bsplines and nurbs in an easy and intuitive way and found this book to serve the purpose perfectly. Highly technical books skip these concepts and go into complex mathematical concepts assuming that the reader has a perfect background. This book does not assume this. Along with explanation it also gives why this particular method is beneficial and the weaknesses of it. This is also good for those who are already familiar with the subject but like to teach it to others. I wish the author could take other complicated methamatical topics and explain them also at this level clearly outlining their use in the industry like Fourier transforms, Z transform, Wavelets etc. Computer Graphics and Computer Aided Geometric Design are fields of highly sophisticated mathematics and we need books like these for every topic.
