Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars confusing to the layman, i cant speak for the pros, but amateurs stay away!.......2005-09-01

i found this book obtuse and very hard to read. if youre not an advanced electrician i would start somewhere else first as this title spends very little time on the basic mechanics of electronics and is mostly full of 'helpful case histories" which i found pretty much useless. the publishers should take the title and rewrite the entire contents instead of adding on to an esoteric book written 20 years ago in the most confusing venacular ive ever attempted to read. thumbs down.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing, old info, Not very helpful.......2005-03-10

I do have this book and it is a disappointment. It list some problems you may have and some steps to try. But if your problem is not listed in the examples your kind of stuck. Trying to list the problems and steps to take that can come up with the millions of consumer electronics devices is not going to work. I don't know what is, but this book doesn't really do what the title says. I have some other H.Davidson books and they are not that helpfull. There seems to be a bag of tricks you can try when repairing things. i.e. ESR meter, flowcharts, curver tracer, overheating chip, call the manufacture, etc. But when those don't work I think you have to study how the circuit works and understand what is happening and what happens when certain parts fail. This can take a long time. Maybe there is a better system, but it is not in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Useful Information.......2004-08-23

I recommend this book as a good reference, but it helps if you aren't a novice. Sometimes schematics aren't available and you have to learn how to improvise. A person bitten by the electronics bug typically endures hours of frustration and failure before gaining enough experience to troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment. This book should guide you in the right direction and hopefully save you some time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Aid in Troubleshooting.......2004-07-13

Well I don't know why Amazon let's reviews go through that are obviously not appropriate as the last one is. This book deserves the highest rating for a book in this class. I do not own this book yet but will soon. I have reviewed it in book stores and found it to be a valuable reference text. It provides basic typical schematics for the most often found circuits in consumer electronics and provides a clear and detailed narration on how to troublshoot problems. I can't wait to get my personal copy and put it on my reference shelf.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Witty and charming!.......2005-01-07

I found this book to be very charming. The author shines when describing the physical angst of midlife. Her humor is gentle and a bit sappy, but very heartfelt. The essay style was a bit inconsistent at times, but still, an easy read. I was disappointed at the overall Christian tone of this book, which I did not expect nor want, and felt it was kind of preachy.

A better, more hilariously humorous read is Julie Donner Andersen's "Parentally Insane: Insights From The Edge..of Midlife!", which covers the gamut of midlife pains and joys of raising children (and babies!) in midlife, physical changes, and midlife marriage.

        4 out of 5 stars Hey girlfriend, let's talk!.......2004-03-29

It's all about knowing you're not the only one! Thanks for this chatty, funny book about the change -- it's all attitude, all the time. Doesn't tell how to replace the hormones, just how to deal with not having them -- but there are other "replacement" books. Caron is a blessing, no matter what your religion.

        4 out of 5 stars I am a guy.......2003-11-07

It's great to finaly understand my wife! I am a guy, I don't read much, but I enjoyed the witty humor of Caron Loveless. This book will realy help guys who have wives going through this. Come on be a MAN!

        5 out of 5 stars I'm Not Alone and I Will Survive!!!.......2003-05-15

I actually host a book club, so I read alot! This was a great, quick read, but one I will refer to quite often. Caron Loveless is an excellent writer. I got the feeling she is close to God and really sought His counsel about this phase of life. I laughed out loud and cried a lot too. I especially liked her journal entry to herself at age 40ty. Wow! I wish my head was on that straight. It was beautiful! It amazed me how she was able to make you feel the good and the unpleasant throughout the book. You really felt like you were sitting there in one of the chat groups. I am telling all my friends about this book and insisting that they buy it. It's so down to earth with all that you might go through, yet very educational. Caron, you did a great job and I can't wait to read more of your books!

        5 out of 5 stars Someone Understands!!!.......2003-04-30

I have to admit that I am not the worlds greatest reader, however, the ease of gliding from cover to cover with Loveless' openness was a breeze! I was either laughing or crying throughout the book! As I started to read, I noticed I was relating so well to the author, that it felt like we were two girlfriends sitting down for a cup of afternoon tea. I also shared each chapter of the book with whomever was around, whether that be friends, family or complete strangers overseas. I have purchased several copies of the book for friends and currently am looking for my copy which I have probably given away to someone. The book has helped me in this critical time of my life from a mental, emotional and spiritual point of view. Thank you Caron for your sincerity in tackling this difficult topic! Sure do look forward to our next "tea" time together!

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Confrontational artists.......2002-09-25

This is quite a voluminous collection of interviews with unusual writing and artwork by the featured artists and musicians. As such it is an ambitious attempt to link all of these underground performers together and provides a comprehensive introduction to the most prominent confrontational artists of the eighties. It includes most of the New York No Wave movement (Michael Gira, Lydia Lunch, Sonic Youth, Swans) but reaches wider to also feature similar artists and groups from the UK (Marc Almond, Cabaret Voltaire, Chris & Cosey, The Fall, Psychic TV, Mark Stewart) and Germany (Einstürzende Neubauten). It is noticeable that a large number of these musicians were considered "industrial" and are also found in Andrea Juno and V. Vale's "Industrial Culture Handbook." My favorite band, Swans, features in a very informative interview and founder Michael Gira has some coprophiliac pieces of prose scattered throughout the book. There is also a chapter on COUM Transmissions that relates to Psychic TV and Cosey Fanni Tutti of Chris & Cosey. The black and white illustrations include portraits of most of the artists and the book ends with five beautiful esoteric montages by Genesis P. Orridge. Together with the aforementioned Industrial Culture Handbook, Tape Delay is an indispensable source for the history of the real alternative culture of the eighties. My one complaint is the lack of an index; it would have made the book more accessible and useful for cross-referencing.

        4 out of 5 stars The mood.......2002-04-30

Tape Delay has a mixed quality of interviews. Most are good, the bad ones are either too short, or contain rather pointless or poorly thought out questions. Still, badly phrased or thoughtout questions are minimal, and the author manages to draw out the collective mood of these closely or faintly related artists. For example, many of them are interested in the possibilities of technological or chemical advances like psychoactives, subliminal messages, multi-media effects on psychology, sound and light waves beyond perception, and the interaction between audience and artist in a live context. How these impact on politics and the sense of self is a major theme in this collection. Many of the artists are also concerned with radical forms of spirituality, psychology or philosophy like those of Aliester Crowley, William Blake, Timothy Leary, or Friedrich Nietzsche. The book is especially good at drawing out the musical geneaology of some of the major bands, how groups like Coil, Chris and Cosey and Current 93 came from Psychic TV, who in turn developed from Throbbing Gristle. Neverthless, these mutual influences and history could have been explored more. Another good touch to the book is artwork enclosed by some of the musicians. So if you want to hear Genesis P-Orridge's theory of how TV will give you cancer, find out who Diamanda Galas perfect man is, or wonder why Nick Cave hates his audience, this should interest you.

          Book Description

Tradiciones Nuevomexicanas is the first comprehensive overview of the folk arts of New Mexico from the sixteenth century to the present. Both religious and secular art are covered, and the author discusses festivals, music, and dance; theater, poetry, and storytelling; and foodways and the healing arts. The book begins with a useful overview of New Mexico's history and includes specialized chronologies, glossaries, bibliographies, videographies, discographies, and a list of recommended readings. Drawing on the expertise of dozens of noted scholars, recognized experts, and living artists, it distills the scholarly works and detailed studies found in monographs and single-subject books to create a narrative that is accessible to the general reader.

In a state where the Nuevomexicano culture is under pressure to survive, especially in urban areas, readers will find this book critical in promoting pride and understanding in one's heritage among Nuevomexicano readers, and in promoting intercultural understanding and tolerance among non-Hispano readers. No student, scholar, or collector of the folk art for which New Mexico is known can do without this essential book.

This beautifully illustrated overview of the folk arts of New Mexico from the sixteenth century to the present covers both religious and secular arts including festivals, music, dance, and the visual arts.

The West Wing a show for losers????
I bet you don't even understand half of what they say in there, that's probably what's happening...

The book, as the series, is absolutely fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Another win for 'The West Wing.'.......2004-08-18

"The West Wing Seasons 3 & 4" is a must for fans of this show. With eight scripts accumulated from the third and fourth seasons, not to mention black and white photos from the set, the biggest fan of the show will be in paradise. If the pace of the show is too fast for you, reading it at your own speed will clarify what went on in the episode. If you own "The West Wing Script Book" then you must get this with it. I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Very good once again...........2004-01-26

If you've read the first TWW script book (also very good), you know that this one has a very high reputation to uphold, one it delivers on wonderfully. It features:

Isaac and Ishmael - The post September 11th episode (Sorkin very
clearly explains also why he felt it had to be done)

Bartlet For America - Leo's hearing related to the MS

Posse Comitatus - Bartlet mulls over killing Sharref

20 Hours in America I and II - Toby, Josh and Donna get lost in Indiana and mull over what makes a president.

Holy Night - Toby is visited by his father, former employee of Murder Inc.

Commencement - The first daughter is kidnapped right after graduation

25- After Commencement, Bartlet relinquishes power (Sorkin's last episode)
          ---
Volumes could be written on the elequence of Aaron Sorkin, and these episodes serve as 8 prime examples. The book includes many scenes cut or shortened in the aired episodes, allowing even more Sorkin goodness then you knew existed. In the introductions, Sorkin talks frankly about his drug arrest, the Isaac and Ishmael contreversy and Rob Lowe's departure from the show. The intros are full of the same sardonic self-deprecating, even sometimes serious words we've come to expect from Aaron Sorkin. A definate must have for the West Wing fan, the budding scriptwriter, the writing fan, and just the public at large.

In GUI Bloopers, consultant Jeff Johnson uses 550+ pages to illustrate common pitfalls in user interface design, the all-important iceberg tip that end users confuse with applications and that developers confuse with end users. Reporting on 82 incidents of bad design, Johnson manages to cover the essential point of his message: software designers should think of their user interfaces from the user's point of view. Not profound, but profoundly overlooked in most low-end to mid-range development efforts. His codification of GUI design in eight predictable principles will help GUI newbies realize that the customer must be pleased with the product. Of course, the customer doesn't always understand what he or she wants. Hence, GUI development is iterative. When the customer is not at hand, a surrogate will do, so usability testing is essential.

The bloopers include mistakes in window design, labeling consistency, visual/grammatical parallel construction, coherence of look and feel, and clarity. Most perceptively, Johnson observes that CPU speed in the development group hides many design mistakes. Moreover, context-scoping, already a subtle problem in software design, must be implemented in GUI design. Input error handling is the most psychologically sensitive of all GUI design characteristics. User error messages can easily be too vague or too specific, and diagnostic error messages should be user-manageable, if not actually user-interpretable.

Like the Hollywood outtakes that gave us the "blooper," the entertainment quotient here is measured in mistakes, not successes. Teaching by counter example rather than by example at an estimated ratio of three to one, Johnson panders to our invertebrate instinct to measure our own successes by someone else's failure. To his credit, he recognizes that user interfaces include pedestrian texts (like his) as well as graphical interfaces for computer applications. His self-referential style gives the book an egocentric slant, but he is both priest and practitioner: he submitted a draft to usability testers and reports the results in an appendix. One criticism was that there were too many negative examples. Hmmm.

Thanks to other tester comments, GUI Bloopers is a browsable book, allowing the few nuggets of wisdom to be located. For the most part, the book's value can be captured by reading the seven-page table of contents carefully. --Peter Leopold

          Book Description

GUI Bloopers looks at user interface design bloopers from commercial software, Web sites, and information appliances, explaining how intelligent, well-intentioned professionals made these dreadful mistakes--and how you can avoid them. While equipping you with all the theory needed to learn from these examples, GUI expert Jeff Johnson also presents the reality of interface design in an entertaining, anecdotal, and instructive way.

This is an excellent, well-illustrated resource for anyone whose work touches on usability issues, including software engineers, Web site designers, managers of development processes, QA professionals, and usability professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Designers & Developers.......2007-09-11

If you are a designer who has to explain to developers what they are doing wrong, get this book (or maybe the next edition, out soon). I loved this book for how well it explained every bad interface design blooper I had ever seen at that point & helped me understand why developers created many of these problems. It helped me explain to developers why there were better solutions & how to design them. It also contains an excellent introduction to user-centered design. It's a very well organized and valuable reference for interface designers & a great gift for any open-minded developer interested in good UI design. I'm looking forward to his next edition.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get started on UI design.......2006-09-07

This was my first book on user interface design, and it was a great choice. It gives good information on principles and also provides specific usable information for how to use controls, etc. I found the organization of the book easy to use and enjoyed reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, still useful.......2005-09-28

The author of this book does a very good job of describing and illustrating common GUI design mistakes. He has categorized the problems in broad topics such as "GUI Component Bloopers" and "Interaction Bloopers", then gives concrete examples of the bloopers that occur within each broad topic. The individual bloopers are well illustrated, and examples of better approaches are given.

Even though the applications used in the book are from the nineties, they are still very applicable, since the advice given frequently transcends the tools used to build the screens. It is applicable to web applications as well.

I read through this book once, and now use it as a reference.

          1 out of 5 stars Too old.......2005-07-25

Don't buy this book, it refers to applications written in early '90. Today it is completely a different story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text for my GUI programming class.......2005-07-09

I am a professor of computer science who offers a two-semester, senior capstone project experience in GUI programming. I have taught this course using a variety of languages and tools, and I have always found that the programming gets in the way of the principles. I have long sought a book that focuses just on the principles and around which I could sequence my lectures. GUI Bloopers fits that requirement like a glove. I use this as the primary text in my classes and supplement it with various books that supply the information needed to implement actual programs in Java and Swing. (We look at .NET, too, but the main programming environment at this time is Java.)

Contrary to some other reviewers, I find GUI Bloopers very enjoyable to read. In addition, I find that it is not at all too elementary for my students, even the first few chapters. It's amazing how many senior computer science majors don't really understand, for example, the difference between radio buttons and checkboxes, even though they use them all the time. One can't take such understanding for granted. Familiarity with a component is not the same as true knowledge of how that component is intended to be used and what users expect to happen when they interact with it. Johnson's constant reminders to test user interfaces on real users, and his discussion of the various levels of usability testing in simple terms, are invaluable lessons. The illustrations and tales from the author's consulting practice bring the principles down to earth and drive home their points effectively.

I highly recommend GUI Bloopers as a college text.
