How to Keep Your Vcr Alive: Vcr Repairs Anyone Can Do
ASIN: 075069940X |
Book Description
The labor costs of even a minor VCR repair are very high, and warranties typically only cover the first 90 days of ownership. The first four chapters of this practical guide allow do-it-yourselfers to take charge of maintaining and repairing their own VCRs for optimum performance. Basic VCR and recording principles are explained so you can gain a better understanding of how your machine operates.
Advanced troubleshooting techniques covered in the later chapters allow technicians and advanced hobbyists to make more complex repairs and adjustments. Basic troubleshooting guidelines and flow charts aid in diagnosis, including chassis and mechanical failures.
VCR Troubleshooting & Repair, focuses on preventative maintenance. Basic electronics principles are presented as they relate to VCR performance.

Starts good then jumps to warp...over my head.......2002-09-05
Starts out with easy to read introduction with block diagrams. The next chapter goes into troubleshooting equipment and tools which was good. Beginning with the chapter on maintenance, it tries to show the parts that need to be lubricated and cleaned. With "Determining the Problem" chapter, the amateur is left behind in favor of the seasoned technician, introducing acromnyms and VCR model numbers without explaination. From there on, it gets worse with full schematic diagrams guaranteed to have beginners running to the service center. The pictures are in black and white and hard to make out (quality equal to a photo copier) left me disappointed. The following chapters goes in to problems with each section of the vcr ending with case studies of classic problems likely to be encoutered by techs. I a have background in digital and audio electronics but haven't work in video electronics (TV) since 1981. I thought this book with it's 180 pgs and medium text would get me up to speed on the state of the art. Unforuntately it failed for me. I gave it 2 stars since it could help seasoned service techs with better a better background on the subject then myself. I'm opting for a text book.

A MUST READ FOR ANY STAT TREK FAN!!!.......2001-03-11
What Star Trek fan would not love a story with characters such as Captian Jean-Lucy Ricardo and Conselour Dee Troit. The best parody of Star Trek I have ever seen. Great attention to even the smallest detail of Trek lore. This ranks up there with Spaceballs in the parody department. If you love Star Trek this is the book for you!

Book Description
This new edition of the ultimate reference book for blues lovers by renowned music authority Robert Santelli contains more than 650 entries profiling every important blues artist-from Bessie Smith to Koko Taylor, Charlie Patton to Robert Cray, Blind Willie McTell to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Each biographical sketch is concise and informative, going beyond basic biographical data and discographies to include a discussion of the artist's style, musical contribution, and "essential listening"-the recordings you must go to if you want to hear that person's best work. Existing entries have been completely updated, and fifty new entries have been added. This one-of-a-kind, richly informative guide will be a beloved and much-used reference for blues aficionados and new listeners alike for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, new edition needed.......2005-11-07
This is a great biographical guide to blues musicians and their careers, but it's time for an updated edition. The book contains 600+ entries with fairly detailed bio info in each, with musicians ranging from Bessie Smith to Robert Cray, and even including crossover groups like the Yardbirds. But the book predates the CD era somewhat, with the "essential listening" section for each musician lacking in CD listings. For some, this is a major omission (I'm thinking of the 1,000 or so Document CDs that could have been accessed with so many of the pre-war musicians).
Books like this often impel people to go through them to note who was left out as well as who made it in. Some of the earlier female blues singers who recorded many important sides in the 1920s seem under represented: Viola McCoy, Josie Miles, Monette Moore, and Merlene Johnson (The Yas Yas Girl) were all left out, though each recorded dozens of sides. Of course, artists who have come on the scene since 1993, when the book was published, are not included either (Keb Mo, Jerry Ricks, and Corey Harris to name just three come to mind). No book, obviously, that is documenting an on-going subject will ever be complete, but this one is valuable enough to warrant a revised edition. Hopefully one is in the planning stages. In the meantime, this is (along with Harris's BLUES WHO'S WHO, which also needs updating) an important reference book for lovers of the blues. A must-have book.
Definitive, but not definitive..........2000-08-02
This is a great book to have in your collection if you're a fan of blues music and history. By far, it's not the ONLY book out there. There are a number of notable artists this book is missing. Hopefully, future editions of this book will begin to fill some of the gaps. That being said, this is a very good reference just the same.
A good referance to accompany other reading or listening........1998-08-24
The information provided in the biographical encyclopaedia is a good referance when reading other publications on the "Blues" or listening to recordings by a performer with whome you may not be familiar. Whilst the referances are not complete, it is nevertheless a source of sound information on numerous blues performers from the 1890's to the present. (I found I had a number of recordings in my collection made in the 1920's and 1930's by individuals not referenced in the book.)
The book is a very good "handbook" to have by your side when you want to learn or simply recap on some details of an individual whose story you may be absorbing either through reading or listening.

Comprehensive, highly recommended for any fan of the blues.......1996-05-26
I recently picked up a copy of "The Big Book of Blues"
by Robert Santelli at the Delta Blues Museum bookstore
in Clarksdale Mississippi. Billed as "a biographical
encyclopedia with more than 600 entries covering
classic blues, country and urban blues, rhythm and
blues, and blues rock", the author has achieved his
daunting goal of creating a definitive reference for
both the uninitiated and the true blues aficionado.
Rather than a dry, vital statistics only type of approach,
Robert Santelli's comprehensive reference presents
a brief vignette of each artist's career and their
influences, along with in depth discussion and
subjective observations on their style of playing
and songwriting.
The entry for Robert Johnson is a great example of the
folksy storytelling style employed by the author. It tells of
Johnson's illegitimate birth in 1911 and his untimely death
from poisoning by a jealous husband in 1938, and covers
all the significant highlights of his short career including
details of the infamous "crossroads" myth.
The author also includes "essential listening" for each
artist. These lists of recordings are not complete
discographies as found in some references, compilation
of which would take years for such a diverse group
of artists whose recordings appear on the most
obscure labels imaginable. Instead, the "essential
listening" references cover the artist's major works
and significant career milestones, and represent the
best examples of the artist's style.
From world renowned performers such as B. B. King and
John Lee Hooker to more obscure local club players
like Cripple Clarence Lofton, the author covers a lot
of ground and has done extensive research into the
lives and times of nearly every artist who ever played
the blues. The author's extensive knowledge and
resourcefulness is clearly evident in this informative,
entertaining, and well researched volume, which
appears to be a true "labor of love". I highly
recommend this book
Book Description
This engaging introduction to Japan's burgeoning beauty culture investigates a wide range of phenomenon--aesthetic salons, dieting products, male beauty activities, and beauty language--to find out why Japanese women and men are paying so much attention to their bodies. Laura Miller uses social science and popular culture sources to connect breast enhancements, eyelid surgery, body hair removal, nipple bleaching, and other beauty work to larger issues of gender ideology, the culturally-constructed nature of beauty ideals, and the globalization of beauty technologies and standards. Her sophisticated treatment of this timely topic suggests that new body aesthetics are not forms of "deracializiation" but rather innovative experimentation with identity management. While recognizing that these beauty activities are potentially a form of resistance, Miller also considers the commodification of beauty, exploring how new ideals and technologies are tying consumers even more firmly to an ever-expanding beauty industry. By considering beauty in a Japanese context, Miller challenges widespread assumptions about the universality and naturalness of beauty standards.
Customer Reviews:
Gender studies with a sense of humor.......2007-07-14
It seems to be de rigueur for the introduction or first chapter of any cultural studies book to be a catalogue of theoretical approaches, with the author strictly delineating which ones she or he will adopt in the remainder of the book, and gravely acknowledging some other academic for "bring[ing] to our attention the existence of multiple centers and peripheries," etc. The first chapter of this book follows the same formula, but the mood and interest level brighten up as soon as these preliminaries are out of the way. Even though the author makes a number of serious points about, among other things, the "construction" of gender in Japan, she does so with a light touch and a sense of fun.
The book's focus is on how Japanese, especially in the 20-30-y.o. generation, conceive of and modify their bodies, especially through "beauty work" and "esute" (aesthtic) salons. The author convincingly shows that certain beauty practices long interpreted (in the West) as attempts to look more Western or specifically American (e.g. adding a fold to the eyelids using tape or surgery, lightening the skin, and dying hair blond(ish)) actually have a more Japanese meaning.(She also makes a good point by asking why is it that when a Japanese dyes her hair blonde we assume she wants to look American, but when an American kid pierces his nose or wears dreadlocks we say he's showing creativity or multicultural tolerance?) The book also helped me to accept (though not necessarily to understand) that the rock-stars and other overly smooth, tousle-haired guys I'd perceived to be androgynous "girly-man" types are perceived as manly by many young Japanese women.
Throughout, the author provides entertaining descriptions of various esute experiences that she herself, a middle-aged "hairy foreigner", underwent, and of the chicanery of salon owners (which knows no international boundaries). She also has a lot of affection for the extravagant product names (e.g. Shiseido Proudia Face Escort Super Fix UV) and fads (the Karaoke Diet, the Manicure Diet, etc.) that differ from their Western counterparts only by degree, rather than kind. My only regret is that she didn't include more pictures; the book has over 30 illustrations, but she describes many more images and names various celebrities of bygone eras, all of which (or whom) it would have been helpful to see. Nonetheless, you don't need to have a lot of prior knowledge about Japan to get both insight and enjoyment from this book.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for stay at home moms.......2006-08-02
i think this is a great warning to women who give their whole life away to their husbands and leave nothing for themselves.
I feel bad that Jen's mom would reveal too many intimite details of her life. Nancy shouldn't have revealed as much as she did and I get the impression that she hid a lot of facts
from us. I feel for Jen and I like her even more now because of the book. Her mom did a good job of portraying jen in a good light and i do hope they can reconcile. I've heard that they have. I also hope that Jen can help her mom financially, since it is hard to be a full time mom and that rat ex of hers left her with hardly anything.
From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir.......2005-07-04
Nancy Aniston is a very bitter woman. Her memoir is written with such condescension about her family and friends that one wonders if her psycho bable camaflages her self centered personality. It is clear she is jealous of her daughter's celebrity status and wants the world to know how responsible she was for Jennifers talent, only to be rejecterd by Jennifer in favor of hangers on and Jonnie come- late-lies. (lies?, that's interesting how that spilled out.)) The memoir is revenge against Jenifer, and is ugly and in bad taste.
Bleeding Heart.......2005-05-03
This is one of the most trite books I have ever picked up to read. The entire story is that of a desperate woman trying to understand why her famous daughter no longer desires a relationship with her...well it is obvious! She sold her out once during a television interview and in her attempt to rekindle the relationship she sold her out again by writing this trashy novel.
Throughout the book she attempts to appear deep, when really her writing comes off worse than a beginning writing course at a community college.
This book is a serious waste of time and money, and frankly if I were Jennifer Aniston I wouldn't bother with a mother like that either.
an overpaid tv star, who must believe her own publicity.......2004-03-07
I just finished this book, and I can't believe the reviews I've seen here. Did I read the same book as the rest of you? It seemed to me to be a thoughtful, sincere effort to understand the sad estrangement from her only daughter. One television interview warrants 8YEARS OF SILENCE? Give me a break!!! While the actors on Friends are certainly talented, no one deserves that kind of money! Her mother did without all those years, supported her, emotionally and otherwise, and this is how she is treated? I don't think the mother is self-centered, egotistical or borderline, at all. It sounds to me more like you're describing her daughter. I'm a firm believer of "Karma", and I really believe this will come back around to haunt Jennifer. I would give anything to have my wonderful mother here to talk to. I think Nancy Aniston has done a courageous job of "getting on with her life". I totally recommend this book. Karol Santiago
in need of a talented therapist.........2004-02-08
The book should have been titled, "me, me ,me"...I can only hope that Jennifer Aniston continues to nurture and be nurtured by her relationships with the people in her life that love her..I found the book to be very sad and in a sense, a cry for help..

Customer Reviews:
Excellent SAP PM resource.......2007-01-18
I've been an SAP PM analyst/configurator for 3 years and I found this book an excellent resource on the IMG for PM. Ian brings in some great new ideas on how each img item can be used and also points out important integration points. I also own SAP R/3 Plant Maintenance by Stengl and Ematinger and that book is a great resource on the business process. So combined the 2 books are all you need in your SAP PM library.
Good reference.......2006-08-27
This is a good reference for all into SAP Plant Maintenance. I believe it is one of the better books around on its topic.
An Excellent Book for SAP PM Consultants & End Users.......2004-12-14
As a long time SAP Plant Maintenance and Materials Management consultant, I have read or looked through most of the SAP Plant Maintenance related books (and of course have looked at the on-line help provided by SAP for different screens, transactions, and fields on a regular basis). This is by far the best book on SAP Plant Maintenance, not only from a consultant's perspective, but also for all super-users and to some extent the end-users of the Plant Maintenance module.
Here are some of the reasons why I found this book extremely well written, helpful, informative, and an enjoyable read:
* This book is focussed on providing a good understanding of the configuration required to implement SAP Plant Maintenance. The author has not only identified PM specific configuration elements, but also talks about what configuration to touch and which one to leave alone based on his past experiences. This type of information is obviously not available in online help provided by SAP.
* This book clearly explains not only how to setup the PM module, but also what impacts some of the settings have on downstream transactions within or outside the Plant Maintenance module. Therefore, it gives a very good overview (and in some cases, a lot of detail) around the integration points of the PM module with other SAP modules.
* The title of this book is a bit misleading. It may lead you to believe that it only discusses Configuration of the Plant Maintenance module, but about one-third of the book is focussed on describing Plant Maintenance related master data, business processes, and reporting in SAP. This section should be very useful to all super-users and end-users as it is easy to read and understand, and cites real-life examples and business processes to explain complex SAP PM elements.
I have personally used this book as a reference material when making presentations to clients, configuring their systems, or even in developing training materials around the SAP Plant Maintenance module. I therefore recommend this book highly to anyone involved with implementing SAP PM, or trouble-shooting/using the PM module, or just interested in expanding their knowledge of different SAP modules. A Must-Read book for anyone interested in SAP Plant Maintenance module!
