Repair techniques are also illustrated throughout.
This book is an expanded and updated version of Chas Miller's classic Practical Handbook of Valve Radio Repair. Full coverage of valve amplifiers will add to its appeal to all audio enthusiasts who appreciate the sound quality of valve equipment.
A practical manual for collectors, owners, dealers and service engineers

Valve technology is a hot topic

For British Use Only.......2005-08-22
The 3-star rating reflects kind of an average between the useability for a British radiophile (probably 5 stars) and a US radiophile (probably 1 star). Though the book is well written and factual, it is written for the British radio enthusiast. Although all radios operate the same in any country, radio models, tubes (valves), test equipment and nomenclature in general are totally different in the UK than in the US. This makes it difficult to translate back and forth and I found myself trying to figure out what a particular term meant or what the equivalent US numbered tube might be. Not a quick read or reference if you're from west of "the pond."
Vintage Electronics Repairs.......2000-10-13
ISBN 0 7506 3995 4
An ever-increasing number of Electronics Engineers, born since the transistor (1955ish), are asked sooner or later to help with a "wireless" or amplifier which contains "valves", or "tubes". In spite of countless similarities, valve systems have many important differences; and advice about servicing them is hard to come by.
But at last, here is a densely-packed book of advice, spiced with humour, reminiscences, and informed opinions - but only when and where they really help.
Whilst a pedant might pick holes in some of the theory and treatment (misplaced dots and outdated units for example), the practical advice is invaluable and will save patience, fortune, and lives. (Besides, if we are working on gadgets where 4.7 m meant 4.7 megohms, better to say so. We are even told the alternative American notation.)
If you are new to Vintage Electronics you will not be baffled by 50-year-old "slang", because commonplace terms are explained. But if you have been "at it" for 50 years you will not feel patronised. You will soon find out how much you "didn't know you had forgotten."

Best Book review.......2000-04-02
This book is one of the best books that I have ever read. The jokes are good and funny, and I told all of my friends about it and now they want to buy it. You should buy it if you are looking for a good book.

Terry Piper has opened a pearl.......2007-02-13
Terry's excellent skill shines in this new concept of stardom. Her book revealed what everyone is now talking about. On the 2007 music awards Randy (American Idol Judge and music producer) is speaking out about the power of American Idol to change the way fans get to pick and choose their stars. No time in the history of the music business- except when Frank Sinatra won a contest-has a music star been show cased to the world with instant worldwide results. Randy said that in the past heads of music companies got to choose what you would here and who you would like...Now the choice falls to not only this country, but the world. This book is excellent and Terry has done an excellent job. I would suggest this to anyone...especailly a fan of Clay Aiken. I love that guy...He is Elton all over again! Plus Clay..

WHY????.......2006-08-10
This book cost more that the new CD!
Why do people try to write a book about a celibrity? To make money!! It should be against the law! Shame on you.
The Invisable Revolution: Clay Aiken.......2006-08-08
I enjoyed the book but it kept falling apart. Pages through out the book fell out. Poor publishing....
a wasted opportunity.......2006-08-08
As one of the 'fans' whose words were included in this 'carefully researched' book without my permission, I ask that anyone who does read it understand that Ms. Piper speaks with many tongues---some not her own, and others that actually are but which she doesn't claim as such. I find that suspect. I also find it disappointing that a fan took a great concept and opportunity---the unique relationship between this remarkably talented and genuine man and his diverse and loyal fanbase---and gave it a less-than-fair or thorough treatment. Just because words are printed and published does not make them worth reading. I suggest you read instead Clay's own words and story---his own discussion of his fans and his relationship with them---by choosing "Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life", written by Clay Aiken with Allison Glock (an established and respected writer). It speaks with only one 'tongue': Clay's.
Clay Aiken...Well Deserved Idol Title.......2006-06-30
Enjoyed the book....I've been along for the ride since the beginning...amazingly talented young man deserves all the love he's receiving.

Bodies: Sex, Violence, Disease, And Death In Contemporary Legend
ASIN: 1578065933 |
Book Description
In 1987 horrific tales of organ theft that had been circulating in Central and South America for years reached the international media. Soon reports came from all over the planet, rising to a crescendo in the late 1990s. Véronique Campion-Vincent describes these narratives in detail and classifies them as corresponding to three basic types: the Baby Parts Story, Eye Thieves, and Kidney Heists. She then recounts the social problems that seemed to make these awful legends plausibletrade in human organs bought from the living poor; advances in modern medicine which seemed to blur the lines between life and death; the ills of poverty in the developing world and its consequences; and human trafficking.
Campion-Vincent also explains how religious and moral authorities, political campaigners, propagandists, and the media all exploited the legends of organ theft according to their specific agendas. She reviews the explanations offered by authorities, reporters and anthropologists, and offers her own analysis using the methods of folklore, pointing out the similarities between organ theft stories and the perennial tale of the Slaughter of the Innocents. Noting the real trials of everyday life in much of the Third World and the existence of documented cases of illegal trafficking in organs, corpses, and children, Campion-Vincent does not idly dismiss these tales as just another example of urban legends run amok. Instead, she offers a nuanced analysis of the connections between traditional horror tales, modern trends, and real events to show just how complicated it can be to know the truth of any particular story.
These legends are still in use and variations remain commonplace throughout the world. Campion-Vincent notes, sadly, that the social problems that paralleled the rise of organ theft narratives are still very present today.

Goode Leisure Reading.......2006-07-22
Having watched this series as a kid, I was glad to see a companion book come onto the market. All the basic information relating to the creation of the show, as well as, an episode by episode synopsis is detailed, easy to read and provided in a logical format. For those looking for behind the scenes photos of some of K.I.T.T.'s stunts or very detailed technical information concerning how the stunts were done, consider viewing any information that may be available online. It is in this area that this book demonstrates its weaknesses. Much of the provided information could be easily created by anyone who has studied the show.
In general, this is an extremely good book for those looking for all of the basics of the show and how it came to exist. The extras listed under each episode provide some neat details to look for when watching the show. Depsite its shortcomings, would I recommend this book - YES!
Pretty good book. Great details.......2006-03-24
Other than the typo's in this book, it is good. You can learn a lot about the car, the people in the show (why did William Daniels deny credit for Kitt's voice, and why did Patricia MacPherson leave the show then come back) as well as how the show came about. Great history and details behind the scenes.
There is also a good episode guide that gives you background on each episode as well as listing episodes that were written but never filmed. I would definitely recommend this title for any Knight Rider fan.
A must have for all Knight Rider fans !.......2005-09-14
All the secrets and behind the scenes unveiled in this interesting book. You must not miss it if you love Knight Rider.
A great guide... The one and only!!!.......2004-08-03
Definitely a very useful guide for the Knight Rider series... I couldn't put the book down once I got it.. Look out for trivias from each episode from the Knight Rider tv show and find out things u never knew about Knight Rider... The only guide book out there for all the Knight Rider fanatics.. Go get it if u really love the show...
I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the pictures in the book though... The pics in the book is not coloured and some aren't very clear. Thats the downside of this book. But if u are looking for facts and info abt Knight Rider, than this book is for u...
An entertaining read with horrible pictures........2004-08-01
As a huge fan of the show when I was a child, this book sparked great interest when I found it on the amazon site, and ordered it right away. The material in the book is quite good and is a good read for any Knight Rider fan, however the black and white newsprint style pictures are horrible. In fact, the pictures reminded so much of old 1970's newspapers, but I don't think these are the kinds of memories the book hopes to bring back to loyal followers.
I rated this book rather low, not because of the content of the book, but because of the horrible quality of pictures in the book. I know that I didn't buy a picture book here, but I feel that the book would have been better off without the pics at all.

Teach yourself VISUALLY Photoshop Elements 2.0.......2005-09-18
This book had not arrived when I fled Katrina Hurricane
Excellent to start with Photoshop !.......2004-09-15
It is the first time I spend the time writing a review for a book on amazon. I decided to do it for TYV Photoshop Elements because of its excellent quality. I tried a few other Photoshop books before and couldn't go further than page 30 because text is definitely not adequate to teach you how to use a software dedicated to imaging. This book is just perfect for beginners like me who want to understand how the various functionalities of the software can be used to realize what they want. You get a double page per function, very clear and precise, easy to read and to understand. Along with this one, I bought The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 (that I have not started yet) to get into the hairy details...
Fast, Visual Guide.......2004-06-17
Photoelements 2 is a powerful, complex program that is far from intuitive to use. Abode's manual lists the functions of the program but provides little advice as to when to use each function - and this is needed.
Mr. Wooldbridge's book attempts, generally successfully, to provide a simple overview of all the key functions in PE2. The book's main asset is, as the title implies, visual - with screenshots of the different steps. For a visual program a visual guide seems logical to me (I have found the lengthy prose-based books less useful).
The downside? Basic steps are covered, but not more complex, cumulative approaches (however, it can be argued that the book doesn't claim to do this). The photographs used to illustrate each lesson are truly awful - they are simple snapshots. Not one is a worthwhile photograph. This may or may not matter to you. The author illustrates, for example, how to change colors by changing a house's driveway into a hideous, garish color. (Arguably, this might be an asset - you might feel proud that many of your photographs are considerably better than those in used in your guidebook!) When looking for a guidebook, I hope to get exposed to worthwhile artistic photographs that will inspire some creativity. You won't find art here - but you will find the basic building blocks to PE2.
Excellent way to learn Photoshop Elements 2.0.......2003-04-21
I started with the Users Guide that came with the software and couldn't make heads or tails of it- mostly verbal descriptions of visual processes. The "Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop Elements 2.0" made everything clear. It is a wonderful book and learning tool. After you read it (it's a smooth fast read) you can go back to the Users Guide (which is OK once you have a feel for the program) to pick up a few more details, or feel more comfortable with the on-line help or other, less visual, books.

Retouching and Restoration with Photoshop Elements 2.0.......2005-09-18
The book came as scheduled. Unfortunately it was left behind upon my evacuation from Katrina. I may not see it again
But I was very satisfied of your service.
Useful Introduction for beginners.......2004-07-24
I wish I had got this book immediately after purchasing Photoshop Elements 2. I know I would not have needed to buy a bunch of other books on PE2.
This books makes it easy to get familiar with the basic interface and features of PE2 and gets you up and going, gets you productive very quickly and painlessly. Photo editing is what I do most and this book is the simplest and easiest to follow.
Later on perhaps you might have to get a more advanced book, but I feel that as you practice what you learn in this book, your skills will evolve in accordance to your needs.
Lest you think this book deals only with simple basics, here I found the simplest and clearest explanations about Layers and how and when you should use them. Every page has full color graphics and hence the painless learning.
I recommend this book to anyone who is just starting with PE2. Adobe should ship this book in the box if they want users to have an easier experience with their software.
