      Book Description

Ronald Dore's inquiring mind, rigorous reasoning and comparative methodology have greatly enhanced our understanding of Japan. His insights from Japan have been deployed to generate fresh perspectives on Britain and other industrialized and developing countries. This careful selection of writings reflects his underlying concern with what light the study of Japan sheds on theoretical generalizations about how societies evolve and how economies work.

Social Evolution, Economic Development and Culture brings together Ronald Dore's key writings for the first time, making accessible his work across a wide range of social science disciplines. It produces a distinctive perspective with four interlinking themes - technology-driven social evolution, late development, culture and polemics. These are highly topical in the current context of rapid technological innovation and socio-economic change, globalization and accompanying policy choices.

The book provides a rich empirical and conceptual source for those interested in technology, socio-economic evolution and culture, and the ways in which they interact. Researchers, teachers and students in the fields of evolutionary economics, economic development, comparative education, institutional economics, political economy and economic and classical sociology (as well as Japanese studies) will find this volume invaluable reading.

5 out of 5 stars Important Perspectives on New Realities.......2002-01-24

In the Foreword, Rosabeth Moss Kanter observes that today, "women must rely on themselves rather than on institutions to create careers. They must be entrepreneurs who make their own opportunities -- either within or outside of a major corporation -- or professionals with portable career assets -- skills and reputations that can be applied anywhere.....While the message of this book -- that women are caught in the midst of unprecedented social and economic changes -- will not come as a surprise to women who cope with these upheavals daily, the advice and solutions within can help women grapple with vast changes in their organizations." Then in the Introduction, Nancy A. Nichols asserts that "the very first thing that a woman must learn to manage is her femininity. From the moment she enters the work force until the day she leaves the corporate arena, she is judged not just as a manager on the job, but as a woman in the job." For that reason, women find themselves in a "double bind": those who act like a man are forced to act like a man are forced to act in a "sexually dissonant way"; those who act in a "feminine" manner risk being perceived as ineffective, "or worse yet, getting trampled on the way to the top."

The material is carefully organized within four Parts: Breaking the Double Bind, Fitting In or Fighting Back, The Balancing Act, and Tales from the Front. To her great credit, Nichols has selected a diversity of perspectives. One of the book's greatest strengths is the variety of real-world situations ("tales from the front" case studies) which illustrate key points. One of the most informative sections is Eliza G.C. Collins' interview with Lore Heap who (literally) launched Vector Graphics on her kitchen table with a $6,000 investment and built it into a $25-million company. As Heap explains, "I'm not a feminist....I feel that most women gain acceptance from peers, male or female, by proving integrity and intelligence -- not by talking about job discrimination and all sorts of other complaints. I just don't have time for that." I highly recommend this book to women either in business now or preparing for a business career. Also to the men with whom they will associate. Finally, to the parents, grandparents and other older relatives of young men and young women (especially those now enrolled in colleges and university degree programs) who also need to understand "the changing facts of work life." Hopefully, those who read and then re-read this important book will help to ensure that changes yet to occur are of substantial benefit to everyone, regardless of age or gender.

                    Book Description

Women are changing work; the work force, the work place, the way we think of work, and how we work, according to this powerful new book which documents the experiences of over 200 women in jobs traditionally held by men. Patricia Lunneborg, retired professor of psychology, documents how the workplace is improved by greater numbers of women. She interviews women doctors, lawyers, engineers, landscape architects, brokers, state legislators, police, firefighters, carpenters, and electricians. The result is a stimulating and invigorating account of how women are not only contributing to the work force but are changing the very concept of work. In this book the women speak for themselves. They talk at length about how they approach their jobs differently than men and what strengths, as women, they are able to bring to their work. Lunneborg, using these interviews and a thorough review of the feminist literature, offers insight into how women are changing male-dominated work in four major ways: in service orientation to clients, with a nurturant approach to coworkers, through an insistence upon a balanced lifestyle of work and home, and by using power differently than men in managing others. Sure to be a controversial addition to the literature on work and working, Women Changing Work explains the differences between how men and women approach their jobs as early sex-role socialization. Thus, because women learn to be service-oriented, nurturant, balanced, and egalitarian, men can learn to be also. Indeed in the book's conclusion, Lunneborg offers documentation of how men have changed to be more like women in their work values, attitudes, and behaviors. Not just a book for the student or professional, Women Changing Work has a potent message for all working men and women.

                      Book Description

Can a sports franchise "blackmail" a city into getting what it wants -- a new stadium, say, or favorable leasing terms -- by threatening to relocate? In 1982, the owners of the Chicago White Sox pledged to keep the team in Chicago if the city approved a $5-million tax-exempt bond to finance construction of luxury suites at Comiskey Park. The city council approved it. A few years later, when Comiskey Park was in need of renovation, the owners threatened to move the team to Florida unless a new stadium was built. A site was chosen near the old stadium, property condemned, residents evicted, and a new stadium built. "We had to make threats," the owners said. "If we didn't have the threat of moving, we wouldn't have gotten the deal."

"Sports is not a dominant industry in any city," writes Charles Euchner, "yet it receives the kind of attention one might expect to be lavished on major producers and employers." In Playing the Field, Euchner looks at why sports attracts this kind of attention and what that says about the urban political process. Examining the relationships between Los Angeles and the Raiders, Baltimore and the Colts and the Orioles, and Chicago and the White Sox, Euchner argues that, in the absence of public standards for equitable arbitration between cities and teams, the sports industry has the ability to steer negotiations in a way that leaves cities vulnerable.

According to Euchner, this greater leverage of sports franchises is due, at least in part, to their overall economic insignificance. Since the demands of a franchise do not directly affect many interest groups, opponents of stadium projects have difficulty developing coalitions to oppose them. The result is that civic leaders tend to succumb to the blackmail tactics of professional sports, rather than developing and supporting sound economic policies.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A scholarly & comprehensive review of the subject........1999-03-12

"Playing the Field" is a well-written, scholarly work (Euchner is a professor of political science) which examines, as its subtitle succinctly states, "why sports teams move and cities fight to keep them." Euchner's work seems especially relevant now, in the wake of recent moves by teams in the NFL and NHL and the mind-numbing escalation in franchise values (over $500 million dollars for the expansion Cleveland Browns). "Playing the Field" charts the reasons for the growth of this phenomena, first focusing on the political and economic interrelationship of teams and cities, and also examining the unusual nature of the pro sports "industry". The book also presents "case studies" of three cities' experience with the movement of teams: Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Chicago.

Euchner, however, does not merely limit the book to observations and explanation of "why teams move and why cities fight to keep them". Euchner presents an interesting argument that cities negotiate from a re-active (rather than pro-active) approach that puts them at an inherent disadvantage; in sports parlance, they are always "playing defense". Within the case studies, he points to how the course of events may have been changed had the cities/states "played offense". This include everything from the NFL suing the Raiders for breach of contract before the Raiders filed the anti-trust suit against the NFL, the State of Maryland suing the NFL instead of suing Robert Irsay after the Colts' move, and the city of Chicago "playing hardball" with the White Sox rather than capitulating to their demands. Although the notion of "playing offense" in relocation negotiations appears to be his main answer for cities facing team relocation battles, Euchner also recommends several other solutions: congressional action, coalition building and collective agreements (treaties) between cities, and the formation of rival leagues.

This book would serve as an excellent resource and enlightening reading for city planners, public officials, students of political science, history, and urban studies, and the intellectual sports fan who is interested in the business behind the game. The book, however, does beg for an update. In particular, an examination of Baltimore's failed attempt to gain an NFL expansion franchise in 1993 and subsequent luring of the Cleveland Browns would make for a an appropriate addendum, as would Los Angeles' loss of both the Rams and Raiders in 1995.

This is the story of Maria Callas, who transformed herself from a chubby, painfully shy girl into a magnificent celebrated soprano, the likes of which we've yet to see again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent biography. Read it when it first "came out!".......2007-09-10

The number one recall I have about this book still haunts me to this day... her abortion. Onasis giving her the choice, him or the child.
                        Haunting. Horrible.
Above all, this book was a major "undertaking" for the author which she executed superbly! What a story! What a book!

                        5 out of 5 stars a page-turner.......2006-08-05

(To the reviewer before me: Now we're two.)

I have not read any other biography on Callas, but I listen to her avidly (her La Wally aria is particularly addictive) and have her Tosca performance on DVD as well as the documentary Maria Callas: Life and Art. But Callas's music alone has always made me wonder about her. Such deeply mined emotions in her singing, such ferocity, such purity, such power. How does she get all these in her performances? Where does she mine them? Zefirelli has compared her to Michelangelo, Bernstein has called her the greatest artist in the world. This book answers these questions and explains why. I have to say that it is a compulsive page-turner, even now in the twenty-first century where opera is no longer mainstream. There's always something interesting in each page. At the same time the biographer doesn't belabor a particular episode or detail in Maria's life as to make it boring or overly dramatized. And Arianna Stassinopoulos is no Kitty Kelly: everything seems very well-researched and reliable.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Biography I've Ever Read.......2006-01-29

I can't believe no one has reviewed this book...so although I have never written one before here goes....
Critics say that this is the best book on the intensely private yet captivating Maria Callas. I'll go farther than that and say that it is the best biography I have personally EVER read and I am a huge fan of biographies. Yet, I can't quite put my finger on why its so good. Maybe its because Arianna Stassinopoulos shows a profound empathy for the diva or perhaps it's because she interviewed practically every living person who knew her. Maria Callas, the love interest of Aristotle Onassis who later dropped her for Jacqueline Kennedy, and of course the greatest dramatic opera singer who ever lived, is brought to life right in front of you in this fantastic, well ..... just read this book. You'll love it as much as I do.

If you have a free-spirited friend who jumps from place to place, relying on the kindnesses of friends and the availability of their couches--slip this book into his or her suitcase next time you meet.

Published by Manic D Press, whose other titles include The Underground Guide to San Francisco and Signs of Life: Channel-Surfing Through '90s Culture, this book features chapters written by different authors from Manic D Press's stable. Chapters range from the extremely practical "Sofa Surfing with HIV" by Justin Chin to the more philosophical "Slack Attack"--a reflection on the sofa-surfing lifestyle by Wammo (yes, that's his name). The writers, though not exactly household names, know their stuff. They'll tell you what to pack, how to ingratiate yourself with your host (make sure your feet don't stink, for example), and how to live in your car if you have to.

This slim volume brims with helpful advice for the "modern gypsy," but its lively, opinionated voice will keep even more traditional travelers entertained. --Rebecca Agiewich

4 out of 5 stars How to be a slacker without being a hustler.......2006-05-01

Your adventures are bound to put you in situations never encountered before, this is the perfect book to give you a heads up in staying safe and sane throughout every couch surfing expedition. The chapters are peppered with quick humorous anecdotes with lots of attitude. One big focus of the book is insuring a future couch reservation with your current host. This is achieved through consideration for your host. Tips include a lot of common courtesy but also some things I wouldn't have thought of on my own. The parts I found most informative were handling a buggy house and the safety issues. Roaches hang out in dark, warm, seldom used ovens so when you turn on the oven to bake your host brownies as a thank you for the couch, it could end up looking like a scene from a Stephen King novel with all the critters bailing onto the floor and up the counters. As for safety, don't tell strangers more than they need to know; predators prey off polite people. I did drop one star because there was no advice on broaching the "can I crash" question, or who may be more likely to say yes. But other than that it was a fun book to read and it conveniently fit perfectly into my purse. Traveling is one of life's best ways to gain perspective on the world and if you can do it on the cheap all's the better.

5 out of 5 stars A "Steal This Book" for the next generation.......1999-01-12

Everything you need to know when surfing the sofa circuit. From knowing when to leave your current crash, to how to thank your hosts. Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down. Make no mistake, this book gives the good, the bad, and the ugly of the sofa surfer life stlye. This book tells you everything you need to know. From what to pack, to how to take care of O.P.P (other people's pets), to how to get free food on the road. I would like to write more on the greatness of this book, but I need to go pack my bags and hit the open road. See you there!

5 out of 5 stars A "Steal This Book" for the next generation.......1999-01-06

Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down! If you have little to no money, but still want to be able to see the world, this is your bible. Everything is here, from the perils of going Greyhound, to knowing when to leave the house you are crashing at, to helpful advice to help avoid the cops, a list of items that you MUST have with you when you travel, 10 jobs that are easy to get and quit, and much much more. My favorite part envolved then ins and outs of camping in your car. Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Made me want to read Crime and Punishment.......2007-06-26

My boyfriend bought this book for me 22 years ago and it has followed me around through seven changes of address. I can honestly say that but for this book, I don't think I would have read Crime and Punishment or The Grapes of Wrath. I wanted to be sure I was getting all the jokes. It was funny in 1984 and it is still funny.

5 out of 5 stars Save the Beave!.......2006-02-27

To save the Cleavers from the network axe, past and contemporary literary giants pour forth their own "episodes" for the Beave and crew. Everyone's character --including Eddie Haskell--gets fleshed out in ways you'll never see on Nickelodeon. Personal favorites include Tennessee William's turn on Miss Landers and June. Brilliant and absurdly funny blend of high prose and Americana 50's schmaltz. Made me laugh out loud at every read.

5 out of 5 stars "And Thus Spake Beaver".......2000-02-03

In an attempt to save "Leave It To Beaver" from going off the air in 1963, famous authors submit scripts hoping their influence will persuade the network from dumping the show. Scripts include "Lady Cleaver's Beaver" by D. H. Lawrence, "Beavermorphosis" by Franz Kafka (where Theodore actually transforms into a giant beaver), and my personal favorite "And Thus Spake Beaver" by Nietzche ... "And Beaver descended alone from the house encountering no one, and all at once there stood before him Larry Mondello who bit into an apple. And thus spake Beaver unto Larry Mondello, 'Shared cookies make a friend, not getting in trouble together', and he punched Larry Mondello in the stomach." If you love the Beave and love Literary Parodies, you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest books ever.......1999-01-13

Wow -- it's nice to see that there are other people out there who have read this book and loved it as much as I did. I bought the book when it first came out in 1985 and I was in college. I almost peed my pants reading it in the bookstore, so I figured I'd better buy it before they threw me out. I still have it on my shelf, and it's provided countless hours of amusement ever since. About the only books I would consider funnier than this one are George Ade's "Fables in Slang" and "More Fables in Slang", which are sadly almost unknown today. They should really reprint this, because it's as hilarious today as it was almost 15 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Wally, why is our book out of print?.......1998-09-23

When I first read the Dostoevsky episode ("Hey, Wally, do you think it's OK to kill an old lady?" "I don't know, Beav. We haven't gotten that far in civics."), I was in convulsions. This is the funniest book in the history of Western Civilization, even funnier than "The Lazlo Letters," and that's saying something. That it is out of print is some kind of culture crime.

                                      Book Description

Providing an advanced treatment of Windows XP Embedded, this guide allows engineers to use their own development and target computer systems as they work through the book. Included are instructions for installing the development tools, building a first XP Embedded operating system, downloading it to the target device, and running the newly created OS from the target. Also provided are insights on developing Windows XP Embedded images. In addition, key differences between Windows XP Embedded and NT Embedded, its immediate predecessor, are covered, as are recent updates to the operating system. All of the development tools are covered, including embedded features such as headless operation, booting from CD-ROM, and remote access and administration. An advanced topics section provides detailed instruction on subjects such as boot-time reduction, booting from flash memory devices, multiprocessor systems, and dual video systems.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Supports XPE SP2 - New Toolkit Available.......2005-02-26

I have been asked a few times already about this book and support for XPE SP2. Windows XP Embedded advanced is still a good starting point for those getting started with XP Embedded SP2. All the XPe development basics are in this book, and the steps are good for SP1 and SP2. There is a new toolkit (Windows XP Embedded Supplemental Toolkit) available that covers the new SP2 features and other topics such as EWF API .NET programming, USB Flash boot, security, HORM, etc. There are a few new tools that also help with development. 5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-09-08

I purchased this book after spending days trying to find information about Embedded XP on the web, before reading this book I was struggling to get a working XPe image. The book arrived and by the next day I had the image booting and running.

If you need to create images as I did that run on Flash memory then this book is a requirement. Everything is explained in a detailed way and the common error message section has saved me hours of work trying to find out what is wrong.

Having been a programmer for 20 years or so, I have a solid background regarding computers, and computing systems. However when faced with using XPe, it was a matter of learning the development studio and tools ASAP. This book did just that. Within 6 hours of recieving the book, I had my first XPe OS in the target system running. This book is a "hands-on" adventure that reads well; it's not too simple that it doesn't get you where you need to be, yet not so techi intense that it puts your to sleep. My complements to Mr. Liming on a job well done!
