Book Description
CD-ROM version. The technical progress of the 20th century has led to revolutionary changes in the world of commerce, which have proceeded at an increasingly fast pace since the end of the second World War. Trade has become internationalized. The container and, later, the computer have made many long-established business routines obsolete and required the creation of new ones. Today's businessmen must be equipped with a knowledge of economics, finance, law and technology in order to be able to make the right decisions.
This work is an attempt to reflect the complexity of modern commerce. Terms have been selected from a wide range of fields, including economics, finance, banking, stock-broking, customs procedures, and shipping. Account has also been taken of the fact that not all countries in the world are at the same level of development and so a number of older terms relating to customs procedures and piece-goods shipping procedures have been retained. Book Description
A smorgasbord of parody and satire of poets and poetry, it spares no targets, taking on the classics and current fads, the exquisite pangs of feigned interest at polite poetry readings, the young poet's alienation from a world that hasn't noticed his greatness, and the proliferation in literary reviews of "fresh new voices" that all sound the same. It's funny, informative and challenging. What's more, it manages to achieve the breadth of humor needed to make it accessible to readers who do not know much about English poetry, while showing a loving attention to tone and detail (especially in the parodies) that should make it required reading for poetry lovers.
One indication of its breadth of appeal are the fact that it sports rave blurbs from both Dana Gioia and Lyn Lifshin, from opposite ends of the poetry spectrum. The humor ranges from raucous (a Shakespearean sonnet beginning "Shall I compare thee to a guy named Fred?") to refined ("Leapeth frogge/And splas! heth bog --/Softe sing haiku..."), from the ridiculous (punning "Little Richard" and "literature") to the sublime ("In the good old days, most poets were consigned to oblivion. These days even oblivion won't take poets on consignment.")
The book takes the form of a mock textbook. Some of the funniest stuff is in the hundreds of footnotes, and one must not skip the poetic aphorisms and one-liners that punctuate the beginning of each chapter.

More Fun Than A Barrel Full Of Poets.......2002-05-30
If you've been out of school for a while you might be a little rusty on all the literary references that populate this book. Chock full o' parodies, Dean Blehert has more than a way with words -- he has a way with other people's words.
An entire chapter of Please Lord is devoted to how famous poets -- living and dead -- would write "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink." These writers include Sylvia Plath, Lyn Lifshin, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats and Blake.
Tongue-in-cheek, the book intersperses Blehert's own poetry with instructive "how-to" advice-poems on such topics as "how poetry is done" and "How To Be A Prestigious Mainstream Twentieth-Century Academic Poet." For example, in the chapter on the first subject, Blehert writes:
You can make any sentence poetical
by mentioning blood or bone.
For example, instead of "Yesterday
I went to the store," say "Yesterday
I went to the blood and bone store."
Instead of "The moon rose," say
"The blood moon rose" or "A bone
of moon rose" or, best, "A bone
of blood moon rose."
There is so much in this book, it will take many many readings to catch just half of its humor. Brush up on your "dead white male" poets if you want to get the rest of it.
Dean Blehert is a genius. Period........2000-06-29
Fireworks, Roman candles, fizzgigs...they're always going off in Dean Blehert's mind, all the time. When you pick up a copy of Please, Lord, Make Me a Famous Poet or At Least Less Fat, you get 402 pages of peerless wit and erudition. Blehert knows just about everything there is to know about poetry in the English language, and nearly all of his knowledge is displayed in this book, in his characteristic melange of parody, punning and reasoned discourse. Some people may dismiss Blehert as a show-off, or as merely clever. But most, I think, will respond to his expansive good humor, and to the book's undercurrent of serious, even moral, commentary on what poetry should be and do.
Think of this as the written Steve Martin in pentameter.......1999-08-09
Next time you want entertainment, forget the movies and TV. Get thee to a bookstore or Amazon. Skip past the so-called humor books, and go directly to the...gasp...poetry section. Don't be afraid. You may have a difficult time finding it, but once there, the name Dean Blehert will be prominently displayed on the bindings of several unique and hilarious books. Pick any one(s) you want, but be certain to include his latest in your trove. "Please, Lord,et.al." is not only a poet's primer, but very tasty brain candy for those who simply like to laugh. But please have a care: Blehert's books can be addicting, with no known antidote! Consider yourself warned!!!
A ROMP! Jonathan Swift and Shakespeare have a food-fight!.......1999-07-02
Having encountered Mr. Blehert's writings serveral times past in smaller scale situations, I was not sure what to expect from this extensive and even "Fat" compendium of his labors. So I looked inside....THEN I started laughing. Still laughing, I read more....and more..... and then I began to be REALLY impressed. Mr. Blehert has done ALL his homework, and even iinvented lots of extra-credit assignments. A Doctorate of Letters ultimately inevitable, once a few scholastics with a combination of humor and intelligence get to know this most Wonderfully and Creatively written thesis on "Everything you wanted to know about Poetry...... I hope that it becomes a standard text, a sort of very intelligent sweet and sour sauce to go with a survey of historical poetry, a masterful display of chameleon Style facility. Read it and laugh! Read it and be impressed! Buy it and Read it.
I'm learning more about literature by laughing.......1999-06-06
Picked up "Please, Lord..." and am reading fervently. I think I'm learning more about literature by laughing at it than I did in those vacuuous, slumber-inducing lectures in college. So I am appreciative of the fresh look at this thing called poetry which ranks up there with ice cream in my list of favorite things in the world.

Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama in 1914, he reinvented himself in the 1950s as Sun Ra, the great surrealist of jazz whose free-form performances with his Arkestra amply justified the description "'jspace music." His mystical beliefs were equally avant-garde; Yale professor John Szwed sympathetically explains some fairly far-out notions as "driven by a hunger for totality that only music could express." Szwed recovers the biographical facts Sun Ra was often at pains to obscure, without losing sight of the overriding role imagination played in this visionary life.
Book Description
Always riveting, Space Is the Place is the definitive biography of "one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz" (New York Times)--unparalleled for his purposeful outlandishness, a man who exerted a powerful influence over a vast array of artists.
Sun Ra--a/k/a Herman Poole "Sonny Blount--was born in Alabama on May 22, 1914. But like Father Divine and Elijah Muhammad, he made a lifelong effort to obscure many of the facts of his early life. After years as a rehearsal pianist for nightclub revues and in blues and swing bands, including Wynonie Harris's and Fletcher Henderson's, Sun Ra set out in the 1950s to find a way to impart his views about the galaxy, black people, and spiritual matters through the various incarnations of the Intergalactic Arkestra. His repertoire ranging from boogie-woogie, swing, and bebop to free form, fusion, and whatever, Sun Ra was above all a paragon of contradictions: profundity and vaudeville; technical pianistic virtuosity and irony; assiduous attention to arrangements and encouragement of collective improvisation; respect for tradition and celebration of the fresh.
Some might have been bemused by his Afro-Platonic neo-hermeticism; others might have laughed at his egregious excesses. But Sun Ra was at once one of the great avant-gardists of the latter half of the twentieth century and a black cultural nationalist who extended Afrocentrism from ancient Egypt to the heavens.

The Sun Shines Brightly.......2006-11-06
Sun Ra has remained one of the most misunderstood musicians of our time. And in the case of many music geniuses, Sun Ra would keep the critics and fans at arm's length, but welcome musicians into his world of philosophy and art.
Author John F. Szwed does an almost impossible task of peeling of the layers of myth and disinformation to present the real life, struggles and triumphs of Sun Ra. Szwed brilliantly weaves through the situations which shaped his life while growing up in Birmingham, Ala., the highs and exteme lows in the jazz world of Chicago and New York City & how persistence finally yielded an understanding - on various levels - from fans who also wanted to challenge the barriers erected in the music industry.
The philosophy of Sun Ra is explained and Szwed shows how it influenced every facet of his life on and off stage. I strongly believe Szwed ends any debate on how Sun Ra lived his life and what he demanded from those around him.
This must have been a very difficult undertaking for Szwed, but his outstanding research and balanced reporting yields a fantastic biography on a person we can continue to learn from.
An erudite effort for a daunting task.......2006-05-31
Frankly, Sun Ra seemed to go out of his way to make a biography pretty much impossible. Professor Szwed is to be commended for his effort, though I think at times the professor takes Ra and himself too seriously. It is a hip jazz disease that Ra played off of brilliantly and would have been amused by.
What is of value is you get some idea of the depth of this fellow, the complexity, the seriousness and simultaneous playfull nature. In being too deep or altogether dismissive of him, we missed the amazing creations.
The book confirmed my evaluation of Ra's heart and motivation. A few years prior to reading this book, I went with my family to an assembly of jazz musicians who processed, played outrageous free jazz, and did this while listening to an old woman recite Sun Ra's poetry while "dancing" and "singing" in Wichita. My young daughter was squealing with delight and loving the wild affair. The adults were being so "into it", solemn, and so serious. This book confirmed to me she was likely the only one Sun Ra would have concluded got it. He probably would have commenced to direct the band to improvise off of her squeals.
He from above probably was smiling and particularly happy that a little white girl "understood the vibrations" and would have been encouraged for the future of the earth which he was convinced would take all the races working in harmony to rescue.
equal to its subject.......2005-02-05
Great book.
If you have an interest in who Sun Ra was you ought to read this. Not a lot of musical analysis, but an extrordinary explanation of the ideas and philosophies behind it. Good job on the life as well.
I wish the highly-praised Lewis Porter Coltrane biography was a quarter as good as this.
A stunning masterpiece.......2004-05-09
This is, simply put, the greatest jazz biography I have ever read. Sun Ra is a complex and fascinating character, and Szwed's narrative more than lives up to the challenge. The most impressive thing about this book is that Szwed places Ra's, shall we say, bizarre beliefs in a context that makes him seem brilliant, lonely, compassionate, and vulnerable--in a word, human. Interwoven with the facts of Ra's life, his childhood, his musical development, his status as 60s cult icon, Szwed goes into long, fascinating digressions on the roots of Ra's beliefs--from ancient Egyptian mythology to the Bible. After reading this book, it was as if a whole world had been opened to me, and I now enjoy and appreciate Ra's art so much more. I wish I could convey how much this book moved me...it is more than the best jazz biography I have ever read, it is one of the best biographies I have ever read, period. If you are at all interested in Sun Ra, experimental jazz, or modern mythmaking, then DO NOT hesitate to pick this book up.
Fine Explanation of a Complex Phenomenon.......2002-06-11
The book is well-written and does what it sets out to do - explain who Sun Ra was and what he was doing. This is no mean feat. Sun Ra was a man of many interests and beliefs, of whom many misconceptions exist. Even most of his fans (I've been listening to Ra's music for about 10 years now) will probably learn much and gain tremendous perspective on him from this book (I certainly did).
The book's story is one of a man with artistic genius within him, who probably could have been a millionaire and musical "star" - who chose to do other things instead. Here is the unusual story of what he did and why he did it.
There is room for another book in the world on Ra's discography, that traces the patterns, forms, and themes of his vast catalogue of recorded music. There is room in the world for a book that tells the stories of the members of Ra's Arkestra. But this is not those books, this is the first logical step in studies : an explanation of Sun Ra himself. It's a difficult job very well done.

Book Description
This book suggests a bold comparative approach to broad cultural differences between Africa and Melanesia. Its theme is personhood, understood in terms of what anthropologists call embodiment. These concepts are applied to questions ranging from the meanings of spirit possession, to the logics of witchcraft and kinship relations, the use of rituals in healing, and even the impact of capitalism. Questioning common assumptions about the huge differences among these discrete areas, the contributions document surprising continuities.

Book Description
In a memorable scene in Schindler's List, viewers the world over witnessed the miracle of two Jews being wed clandestinely in the Plaszow concentration camp. Those two were Joseph and Rebecca Bau.In this memoir, filled with his stories and drawings, Joseph Bau tells of their love, finding beauty and wonder in a time of horror. Whether recounting the bombing of Krakow, is brother's daring exploits in the ghetto, the brutality of the camp, or the harsh last days at Schindler's factory, Bau balances the grimness of events with the humor, resiliency, and love that helped him transcend the unspeakable.

A chilling account of the treatment of Jews during that time.......1999-05-20
This book gives you a chill up your spine. It's pictures and accounts are amazing and specific. I would reccomend it to any one intersted in the Holocaust period.
A totally absorbing book that I will never forget........1998-09-05
This is indeed a very descriptive book of many pointless sufferings: starvation, humiliation, and torture{mental and physical}. It left a sick feeling in my stomach that such could ever happen just because Hitler wanted the perfect race. Who was he to say? These people were treated like animals. How lucky I felt to be alive and living in a democracy! The book has many sketches to give you a better picture of the horror Joseph Bau and his family had to go through. Even the cover sends chills down your spine. Once you pick it up it will be hard to put down.
Book Description
In Are You Hungry, Dear?, Doris takes her signature line from the show and makes it her own in a book that pairs hilarious episodes and dramatic turning points from her fascinating life with delicious recipes from her own card file. She shares the lessons learned in two marriages and numerous love affairs, her struggles with her own family, and her heroic efforts to build a career and raise a son on her own. Readers who love tough, feisty, judg-mental Marie Barone will see how Doris is all that and more: tough, sweet, brave, direct, and vibrant. Readers will embrace the un-for-get-table life of this very open star, and relate to the issues-like ageism in Hollywood, sex in the senior years, or her daughter-in-law's imperfect meat sauce-Doris cares about passionately.
Customer Reviews:
Genuine and funny, like Doris Roberts herself.......2007-06-11
I've never watched an episode of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, but I nevertheless found it easy to recognize Marie Barone as actress Doris Roberts describes her character. Marie Barone is someone she loves, understands, and appreciates; but she's also who the real-life Doris Roberts flatly refused to become. Although she married at 18, desperately wanted a child and eventually had one, made homes for two husbands, and raised her son, she never once let go of her dream. She became not just an actress, but a Broadway actress. And then, when television called her name, an international star. That's the role in which I learned to appreciate her work: Mildred Krebs, secretary to Remington Steele.
What makes this actress, and her autobiography, so different from those of most other stars who decide to share their life stories? I'd say it's quite simply that this woman never lost her true, genuine self to the make-believe world of her career. She's lived a full and wonderful life as Doris, and that makes her book infinitely more interesting than others in the same genre. Its final segment, in which she takes on the myths that both show business and American culture in general perpetuate about aging, is one of the funniest and yet most telling discussions of this subject that I've ever read.
An Inside Peek at Theatre and Life.......2006-06-09
Are You Hungry Dear is an easy read. Doris shares an inside peek of theatre, her early life as well as some recipes she recommends. I enjoyed reading about her childhood, complete with cold grandparents and a busy, absent mother. Her grit and determination to make a life for herself is truly inspiring.
She also shows just how very self-centered actors are, with no apologies. They crave the attention of everyone and always want the limelight. I would have loved to have read a little more about her son. I found there was not an over abundance of details about her personal life, more on the show business side of things.
Violent and Depressing.......2005-11-11
In this gritty crime novel, author Doris Roberts tries to conjour the ghosts of the pulp greats of the past. Unfortunately her characters are wooden cliches and the action turns gruesomely violent quickly. Roberts attempts at stylish atmospheric flourishes are, frankly, laughable, and the whole thing smacks of the amateurishish ramblings of a freshman creative writing student. A for effort, D- for result.
Hearty and Heart-Felt.......2003-12-29
Doris Roberts seems to be a very hearty, generally happy woman at least that's what the book conveys. A fabulous collection of her very personal memoirs and stories and advice, it's almost like having a conversation with the archetypical grandmother. But far from old-fashioned and foppish, Miss Doris is downright hilarious at times and speaks with the energy and zeal of somebody less than half her age (in fact, she puts most young people to shame when it comes to fully embracing and enjoying life). Her stories, taking place everywhere from New York theatre to Los Angeles tv to her bedroom, are all colorful and more entertaining than fiction ever could be. You can't make this stuff up! She opens herself up admirably, sharing her personal struggles and her darkest times as well as her triumphs and good days. Throughout, the conversational style of her and Danelle Morton's writing makes you feel more like you are spending time with a friend than reading a book. If you want advice from somebody who has been there before, or colorful tales from the world of entertainment, or a touching autobiography, or an endless source of laughter, or just some fabulous recipes (which the book is peppered with) then this book is for you!
Not a Must-Read for Marie Fans.......2003-09-25
I love watching Everybody Loves Raymond. I love every character on the show, including Marie. And I've read and love the books by Patricia Heaton and Ray Ramano. There was no doubt in my mind that I'd love this book too.
I'm sorry to say this, but this book has been very disappointing.
The preface is good, where she makes the comment that "when you love someone you feed them." Fun reading. I enjoyed Parts One and Two, each (only) 3 chapters long, which deal with the tv show and motherhood.
That's why I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1.
But from Part 3 on, I've had trouble picking up the book to continue. It's not that it's bad, it's just boring. Much of her career has been in theater, so most of her experiences deal with people and shows in that field. (people I've never heard of.)
I have to be honest...I have not yet finished this book. If, as I continue reading, the book gets better, I'll come back and write a new review. But as of right now, I'm not even sure I'll be able to finish the book.
I was hoping for something more like the books by Patricia Heaton and Ray Ramano. Funny, remininds me of the show, and easy to relate to. This book is nothing like theirs. If that's what you want, don't bother with this one.
If you've been a fan of Doris Roberts for some time, if you know her work and the field she's most experienced in and you can take or leave Raymond, you may enjoy this book.

Paint Shop Pro 8 for Dummies.......2007-08-18
Very disappointing.I ordered this thinking I would be able to understand PSP. I am member of several tagging sites and wanted to learn to make them myself. I guess I'll have to look for a book now called PSP for retards. This book didn't help me. I guess my next move will be classes at the senior center. It also made me feel a lot stupider than I did before.
Lacking in some important fundamentals.......2007-07-11
I've used Paint Shop Pro 8 for only a couple of months before I bought this book. I was seldom interested in using it for advanced stuff - commonly called "bells and whistles". I was only using it for simple stuff. I just wanted to know why some so-called "tools" and stuff "disappear" just when I need them, especially the Font selection and font size tool when I want to insert plain text. Two short paragraphs on page 315 do not help. And other paragraphs which mention how to use the "View" options to select various tools, palettes and such did not help either; I already knew about those. And "starting from scratch", so to speak, and following the detailed instructions on adding text, did not help either. What a waste of my money, not to mention the added aggravation.
Availability og Paint Shop Pro 5.01.......2006-07-16
I have used and get a lot of mileage out of Paint Shop Pro 5.01 .Higher versions 8.0 and 9.0 have more bells and whistles but for day to day task 5.01 is more than adequate. I am having difficulty in getting the write up for Paint Shop Pro 5.01. Like most of Paint Shop Pro 'help'. They give the bare information. Why don't they run the user through a typical Paint Shop Pro task that one encounters in the real world. Consider it the best of all the graphic programs. Also XP OS versions of Paint is excellent and use that often.
This Dummy Found It Useful :).......2004-10-24
Paint Shop Pro 8 For Dummies by David Kay helped this dummie a good bit :) . Being a "Newbie" to Paint Shop Pro 8 I was totally lost. This book starts with the basics such as downloading your pictures to the more complicated such as turning a photo into a painting. It has been a great help to me. The reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have found it lacking in the one area I purchased it for and that is simple photo editing. Several tools and techniques are not explained in detail and/or not at all. But overall if you are a novice to Paint Shop Pro 8 as I was you will find it more than beneficial.
Decent but could use some work.......2004-02-16
Ok here is what I consider the skinny. If you have not used Paint Shop Pro before, then this book can help you get started. It is not a tutorial type of book. It tries to explain how the tools are used and what does some of the settings do.
If you have used Paint Shop Pro before, then you may want it for a reference. I do not like the way that the authors dove away from some of the tools.
Unlike their opinion, I found some of the tools VERY useful in correcting photos and should be explained. For example, they do not explain the dodge/burn tools. I knew what these tools do but the authors attitude was you won't need them. That may be true for someone just wanting to use the program for quick corrections but it is used alot in retouching.
Overall, the authors did explain why some of the tools behavior which helps understand why something did not work as you had expected. I feel that this is a good beginners book if like I stated before, you are not looking for a tutorial type of book.
