            3 out of 5 stars NOT a third edition.......2005-06-21

If you own the second edition, published by 2.13.61 in the mid-90s, be aware that this is an exact reprint. I believe the only new material is a 1.5-page preface, and there is a different cover design (the new art is a painting based on the photo on the cover of the second edition). Redoubt misleads in calling this a 3rd edition. Unless you're sick of dirtying the pages of your second edition and want a brand-new copy, you don't need this. I rate this 5 stars for content and 1 for the false labeling.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE.......2005-07-16

Aside from being the first and only book to provide a useful aesthetic definiton of rock and roll, aside from the fact that this book builds a wonderful canon of the music, aside from the fact that the author manages to demolish just about every received opinion generated by rock critics for good -- aside from all of this, Mr. Carducci actually managed to transform me from a life-long left winger to a right-leaning libertarian with just an offhand, tossed-out sentence. When discussing the rock critical establishment as a Left cabal, appropriating the music to further a discredited political agenda at the expense of Art, he says (and I paraphrase) that the Left traditionally uses those under them on the ladder as a cudgel against those above them, rarely actually caring for or helping their constituency (and usually doing some harm; look at the welfare state); I immediately had a flash of self-recognition (and recognition -- I never met a Leftist who didn't suffer from this sort of bad faith.) So, if you ever read this, Joe, thanks for opening my eyes.
            The book's damn funny too.

4 out of 5 stars Infuriatingly and compulsively argued--true punk.......2004-07-07

I agree with other reviewers' comments. I read this after Michael Azerrad's "Our Band Could Be Your Life," and Carducci's insider perspective plays off A's chapters on SST bands well. What chaps my hide is C's haughty inclusion of an LA Times article criticizing Black Flag's refusal to intervene when the moshers pounded on the innocent bystanders. C. acts as if the band had no responsibility for the brutality some of its fans perpetrated against other fans. C. thinks that the music matters not its context, and to me, as somebody who was there, that's b.s. The two are inseparable and you don't have to be a PC straight-edge Dischord disciple to agree. C's taking the easy, if provocatively punkish, way out here, just as gangsta rap's apologists do.

That out of the way, I do welcome any tome that celebrates both The Fall and Hawkwind, and his stream-of-consciousness rants on all sorts of po-mo critically reviled 70s music does mesh with what happened as SST devolved into a hair-metal crudge label! Where would Queens of the Stone Age, Velvet Revolver, and all that Seattle sludge have heard that it was ok to listen to Zep and Ozzy?

And, truth be told, Carducci's spot on when it comes to many of his ravings, even if Lester Bangs, Richard Meltzer, Chuck Eddy and Chuck Klosterman have all howled the same cry. Much as some of this book in its calculated slumming gets my goat, other chunks soothe my soul, and make me feel as superior as you do to what passes for street cred, as we get angrier and crustier compared to/about those darned kids. Heck, my sons now realize what a cool record collection their geek dad has, and passing along C. to them for expanding their horizons, where the unfashionable joins the unlistenable, continues to further the underground resistance, when real punks don't go to Hot Topic chain stores or don leather and mohawks to prove their commodified (non?)conformity. It's an attitude, as C. points out--not the puerile suburban tantrums that stifled so much creativity in the 80s, as his label's own slump then demonstrated irrefutably.

            5 out of 5 stars So Now Joe's Collectible!.......2003-10-15

Ironic that Amazon would actually piggyback narcotics offers next to a book which uses "narcotic" to describe pop evil. But as Carducci suggests, both pop music and narcotics appeal way beyond their legitimate purposes. So pop some oxycotin and turn on some pop, or do the right thing and rock out.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll all Night (and all day).......2003-05-05

This book is impressive, and not only for the deep knowledge of rock that Carducci displays. The opening chapters describing what the "real" sounds of rock are should be required reading for anyone interested in forming a band. The scope of this book is unrivalled and the selections for the most influential bands will raise more than a few eyebrows (No where else will you see James "Blood" Ulmer mentioned in the same vein as Sabbath). Carducci rightly praises the "Black" bands (Sabbath and Flag) as the most influential in their respective genre's, but it may come as a surprise to many that Carducci attributes (perhaps correctly) the original "wall of sound" approach to Eddie Cochrane. While this book doesn't cover heavy metal and it's sub-genres very completely (see Ian Christe's Sound of the Beast for that), it wasn't meant to (see Title). In addition, this is one of the few books that credits (rightly) the Ramones for their widespread influence (early Black Flag and the Misfits to name two of the most well-known). In addition to the depth of knowledge displayed, Carducci will have you rolling in laughter more than once. If all the above is not enough, the appendices with original poster art and one of the funniest Ray Pettibon paintings (Give me librium or give me meth....) are worth the price of the book alone. Buy it and then buy some essential music!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2001-06-07

This is the first book I read that spoke about rock music intelligently and at the same time it was not the elitist slobber most critical views of popular culture resort to (making us suffer). It ain't policticlly correct--but rock shouldn't be that way either and sadly today--it is--for the most part. After I read this book I incoorporated it in to most of my college research papers. Book Description

Movies made for television were in their infancy when ABC came up with a novel idea: a weekly series of films made exclusively for the small screen. The ABC Movie of the Week became a great success and a cultural touchstone for a generation of Americans.

More than 200 films in the series are reviewed, including such well-remembered titles as Duel, Tribes, The Six Million Dollar Man, Go Ask Alice, Brian's Song, The Night Stalker, Bad Ronald, Starsky and Hutch, Trilogy of Terror, That Certain Summer, Killdozer, and many more. In addition, choice bits of trivia about the actors and films are sprinkled throughout the book.

With a Foreword by Denise Nickerson (of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) and commentary by David Hedison (The Fly, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea).

5 out of 5 stars Where are all these movies?.......2007-04-28

This is an excellent subject and the book is fine... it's just too short! Longer reviews would be nice but there is a bigger problem... finding these movies! "The Night Stalker/Night Strangler", "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", "Trilogy of Terror", "Tribes", "Bad Ronald"... okay, these are out there but the majority ov these films don't even come up on Amazon's movie database or any other purchasing outlet! If your like me you'll wanna track 'em all down (even the cheese) and it's going to be hard. I collect sleaze, obscure classics and junk from the around the world but movies made in my own country for the mainstream (good ones if you can believe it) remain to be unearthed as ov this writing. Ironically, a few ov the titles pop up in the dollar DVD bins... grab 'em while they last.

5 out of 5 stars A real trip down memory lane..........2006-07-24

Growing up during the seventies, my mom's favorite programs were these ABC Movies of the Week. I often wound up watching the movies with her, if they were somewhat to my liking (surprisingly, there were quite a few horror/thriller varieties). A while back, my mom and I started to discuss some of those old movies, and we got them a bit confused. I found this book online, and it's been a great help. We can read a synopsis or summary, it's a case of, "Oh yeah, I remember THAT one!" My mom particularly loves the book, it really brings back a lot of memories for her.

It's interesting to note how many ABC TV series got their starts as pilot movies run on the ABC Movie of the Week-- The Six Million Dollar Man, Starsky and Hutch, The Rookies, etc.

The format and presentation is well-laid out; with a history and year-by-year listing, and air dates and a summary/synopsis of each movie. The only thing that could "punch it up" would be more graphics-- perhaps a still or shot from selected movies could help. After all, the TV movies were a visual medium.

5 out of 5 stars Oh the Memories!.......2005-09-03

Being the rabid TV Movie nut I am, this book is a godsend. A short, concise guide to some of my favorite titles from that golden era of TVMs, "The ABC Movie of the Week Companion" also includes some interesting facts about the program, like salaries and ratings, as well as a fun introduction by the lovely Denise Nickerson (who DIDN'T have a crush on Scott Jacoby in the 70s?!?). And I thought I was the only one who remembered "Isn't It Shocking?"!!! A must for nostalgia buffs...

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Funny Trip Down Memory Lane for Movie Fans.......2005-08-24

I've been waiting for this book (as, I'm sure, were many others!). I used to watch the ABC Movie of the Week every Tuesday and Wednesday -- it was must-see TV in our house -- and I remember some of them so vividly it's scary (like Karen Black and that horrible killer doll). Since very few of these flicks have been released on video or DVD, this is the next best thing: an entertaining, often very funny, look back at almost all the movies in the series, with lots of trivia thrown in for good measure. The author has done all movie fans a service by getting the stats on these films down in print. A must for any movie-lover's personal library!

            Book Description

Successfully manage Web content to achieve a competitive edge
Using the content management strategy that she developed for companies such as Nortel, Motorola, Cisco, and others, Hackos walks readers through the stages of effective Web content management. She shows how to establish a content strategy based on what type of content a user needs, the platforms to which it should be delivered, and the types of content necessary for the organization. Readers will learn how to develop and incorporate an information model into their Web site design as well as how to transform their organization's processes to ensure dynamic content delivery. They'll also find tips on how to take advantage of XML.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of great information, but very technical.......2005-05-03

Personally, because I am a beginner at content management, this book seemed a little too technical for me. It is meant to teach someone the process of content management, but somehow it still seems a bit high-level. In any case, the content itself is a good indicator of how the process works. Here are some highlights:

            * It covers the processes necessary to analyze, create, and manage content, as well as present it on the web.
            * It includes strategies for separating presentation from content, such as how to analyze documents to break them up into logical units.
            * It shows how to create an information model (a schema used for defining the structure of the data) and defining content units (logical units in which content is stored); it discusses creating content in that data model using XML.
            * It includes creating content plans that define how data will be organized and presented to users for both static and dynamic sites.
            * It focuses on the concept of single source publishing (publishing the same content in multiple ways and formats).
            * It talks about how to staff a project with advanced content creation experts.
            * It touches upon advanced concepts such as using topic maps to define advanced presentation.

If you are just starting out, this book may be too much for your first stab at learning the material. However, this is a good 2nd book, once the initial idea has been understood.

3 out of 5 stars Provides a good start, but............2003-03-14

At first reading, this book was good, but I later found myself confused about the processes Hackos describes. The first chapter is strong in that it provides an overview of the five phases of a content management project, complete with lists of deliverables. The book includes a number of process checklists in the appendices.

When I see a book that lays out a process structure in the beginning, I expect the table of contents to follow that structure. This book fails to do that. It can be difficult in the first reading to know what phase of the process is described in any particular chapter. The last two phases of development--the pilot project and the roll out--are not described outside the introductory chapter.

Since the content management field is apparently devoid of a conventional vernacular, authors get to invent their own terms for things. I had to read several chapters many times to understand what Hackos means by "information type" and "content unit." It was also difficult to see where metadata fits into the picture. Her information model shows an information repository containing "modules of content", such as reports or manuals. Each module of content may contain one or more "information types", such as letters or recipes. Each information type is constructed of "content units", which can be recipe ingredients or procedure steps. But, you start by defining "dimensions", which become retrieval metadata for the information types.

A dimension is essentially an enumerated data type with a set of discrete values. Once you define the dimensions, you can then define information types and, at the lowest level, content units. These dimensions are translated into metadata attached to "modules of content". This is what confuses me. As described in the book the metadata is attached to the highest level of document in the repository, but not the lowest level of content unit. Apparently, the sole function of metadata advocated here is to aid user-level searching and retrieval, and not to support authoring workflow. I find this a significant shortcoming.

            In summary:
Strengths: Strong focus on the end user, case studies, process not overly detailed, a chapter on making a business case, appendices full of checklists, & a good introduction.

Weaknesses: Book doesn't follow process flow, the jargon is difficult to grasp, reuse mechanisms are not well covered, uses a weak metadata model, and really only details the first three phases of a five-phase process.

Recommendation: A number of people I work with like this book, so maybe I'm just cranky. I would check out the comtech-serv.com website where Hackos lays out the process for you and provides some detail. You should be able to get a feel for her style and process there.

4 out of 5 stars an extremely helpful book - deceptively simple in style.......2003-01-30

This book is a great introduction to how smart design of content and its delivery can facilitate its reuse in an organization. The author has a lot of experience and lays out strategy and advice in a very straightforward manner without jargon. Her examples are simple and nicely revealed and formatted. She always has the customer in mind. Throughout the book, one always has the sense of a person behind the deliveries obtaining benefit (this is so often missing, which is why so many of these type of endeavors fail). The book reveals the soup-to-nuts considerations for anyone wanting to create and manage an effective information delivery project.

            1 out of 5 stars bad advice.......2002-05-14

It gives a good approach how to find the necessary meta-data for your content management system.
But it has nothing to do with modeling.

In fact it gives in certain areas very bad advice.

            One example.
For every content unit you will indicate for which product model this information is applicable.

Now if you have 1000 information units that are reused for a new computer model D, you need to add this computer model to
the meta-data of 1000 information units.
The same if a model is taken out of the market.
This is not maintainable. I repeat this is not maintainable.

Good solutions model the relationships between components and in which products they are used
using PDM software, ERP software or in the traditional RDBMS sense and information units have a pointer to this external information.

I also do not see anything on:
            - modeling of relationships between attributes
            - modeling of relationships between the values of attributes.
E.G. food can have an ethnicity (italian, mexican, chinese, irish, ...)
These could be classified or grouped as european, asian, ...
            No word on this.

Even the XML syntax used is not correct, I'm afraid, since these seem to be empty elements.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic book for dynamic content.......2002-03-26

Covers a broad range of issues, tools, technologies, and concepts. We are all new to some aspect of this emerging topic, and this book provides a point-of-entry for the new as well as experienced content manager.

Particularly noteworthy (at least to me) is the chapter on making a business case for content mgmt, which is increasingly important for technical communicators.
