4 out of 5 stars Better information than I expected.......2002-08-11

Ok, so this book wasn't a life changer; but it did in providing me with useful information. The book begins by warning you that it can be easily dated, because programs come and go. I think as long as you maintain that reference, a lot of information can be gathered.

3 out of 5 stars Re-title this book!.......2000-07-02

This book should have been titled "You're Certifiable....Job Opportunities IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA". I thought it was a fabulous book, but truly, it's not much use if you don't live on the West Coast.

5 out of 5 stars For someone looking for a personally fulfilling career.......1999-08-09

I bought this book for the 21 year old daughter of a friend. She had dropped out of college, complaining that nothing there really interested her. I discovered this book while browsing amazon.com, ordered it, and decided it was perfect for her. After she looked through it, she decided to apply for a school that taught animal massage (she's been crazy about animals since she was a child). She completed the program and is now happily working at a local kennel offering massages to companion animals.

The book lists about 700 other alternative career programs, covering 10 other areas ranging from crafts, arts, outdoors interests, healing, etc. The programs are described succinctly and information is provided on how to follow up. In the beginning of the book, the authors provide a nice introduction to the whole concept of alternative careers (how to find what interests someone, etc.)

Really, it would be a worthwile gift for someone who is looking for a way to make a living that is a little "different", but personally gratifying.

    5 out of 5 stars Why Che's Guerrillas Lost.......2001-11-21

Did the capture and execution of Che Guevarra prove that the military actions he led in Bolivia in 1966-67 were doomed to failure?

This interview with Bolivian participant Rodolfo Saldaña reveals the opposite. His captivating description of how fertile the ground was in Bolivia and throughout South America for revolution includes the mass support and financial aid given to the guerrillas by tin miners, peasants, and students. He explains how the U.S. backed the military junta, and the real reasons for the defeat.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth About Che's Last Struggle.......2001-10-09

In this firsthand account, Bolivian tin miner and revolutionary militant Rodolfo Saldan~a explains how the
guerilla lead by Che Guevara - which Saldan~a helped lead the support network for --was rooted in the
revolutionary upsurge of workers' , students' and farmers' struggles in the mid-late '60s in Bolivia and the
mass movements against dictatorship and Yanqui Imperial domination in the neighboring countries of Peru
and Argentina . As he explains from first-hand experience, Che's efforts were not isolated, driven by
desire for martyrdom, or sabotaged by Fidel Castro, as so many of Che's ' biographers' have claimed.
Excellent preface and introduction by Cuban General Harry Villegas and Pathfinder Press' Mary-Alice
Waters place the lessons of Che's final efforts in the context of the struggles of workers, farmers and youth
of today against capitalism and the Yanqui Empire.

5 out of 5 stars Che Guerrilla & the struggles of Bolivian Workers & Peasants.......2001-09-08

Saldana's fits Che Guevara guerrilla struggle in Bolivia oin 1966 and 1967 into the context of workers struggles that had been shaking that country since the 1940s. He shows how Bolivian revolutionists, workers, students, and peasants welcomed Che's struggle and how the class struggle in that country advanced by Che's struggle. At the country's biggest tin mines, entire unions pledged one day's salary to support Che. Saldana, a founder and leader of the Bolivian Communist Party until he broke with them to work with Che's guerrilla, shows how the Bolivian CP sabotaged Che's struggle. With economic and social conditions in Bolivia and other parts of Latin America much worse than they were in the 1960s, this book should be read as a manual for future upsurges of struggle by workers and peasants in Bolivia and throughout the Americas.

5 out of 5 stars Be like Che.......2001-06-25

Kudos to the Pathfinder editors for finding Saldaña and recording his story before he died. Saldaña describes the day-to-day life of revolutionary organizers among workers and peasants in Bolivia in the early 1960s. The book gave me a deeper appreciation for the revolutionary possibilities that existed in Bolivia, which in turn led to Che opening the guerrilla front there in 1966.

3 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected.......2007-09-26

I bought this book as an aniversary gift for my boyfriend, who is also a cat lover.

I expected a cute, funny book. I thought that we would read it together and laugh and enjoy the evening.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

We started off reading the first series of letters outloud. I read those written by the female cat, and he the ones written by the male cat.

By the end of the series of letters I was in tears. It was really sad. Depressing, even. Not to give spoilers, but I wasn't expecting any tragic deaths in this book. I love cats, I don't want to read or think about them dying if I don't have to. It isn't a pleasant topic.

My boyfriend skimmed through the book, trying to find a series that had a happy ending. The one that he did still involved a lot of tragedy. I decided to put the book down for good after that.

I don't want to insult the author. That would be unfair. The book is very well written. It was clever and creative idea. The stories do have depth and you do care about the cats quite a bit. Everything about how this book was written indicated to me that the author is very talented.

However, it was not what I was looking for. I had a misconception that this book would be happy and less of a downer.

I am writing this review primarily so that someone else doesn't mistake this book for having a different "mood" to it like I did.

    5 out of 5 stars Too cute.......2007-05-27

Ever now and then I like to explore a cute books, that's a fun read. Cat love letters are the exhange of love letters between cats. It's interesting, and cute, and leaves you smiling.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2002-06-12

I got this book when I was ten and I thought it was so funny. The artwork is great too, the way they draw up the letters to look like real stationary is fabulous. I still have this book. I love it. Any cat lover would love it too.

Hollywood isn't all about the “A-list” Â- internationally famous actors and directors, highly paid writers, powerful producers. No, it's also about the failures, the inhabitants of the periphery, the bottom layers of the entertainment pyramid. That's the role Nicholas Kolya reluctantly played for the last decade. Follow his struggle at the margins of the entertainment industry, a nether region inhabited by washed-up game show hosts and once-perky child stars, professional “monkey” writers and drug-addicted talent agents. From the crummy sets of direct-to-video puppet movies to pitch meetings at major studios, laugh at his failures as he reaches, and reaches, and reaches, for that elusive golden ring Â- Hollywood success.

      Book Description

The show runner is the television producer who commands a show's moment-to-moment, day-to-day details. The show runner hires and supervises the staff, decides what will be included in each show, coordinates the casting of each segment, makes sure that a show adheres to its budget, and oversees a production's flow of activities in conjunction with other producers, staff members, technical crews, and post-production personnel.

The only book to deal with the subject, this lively, wide-ranging, informative book covers all aspects of show running variety and talk shows for television. Filled with examples from actual television shows, it covers

      • making, pitching, and selling a pilot show; • production development; • a show runner's duties and weekly schedule; • working with other members of a production's staff and crew; • producing a season of shows,

Along the way, it also defines the roles played by the many producers whose credits we see on the screen (line producer, field producer, executive producer, etc.) and their interactions with the all-important show runner.

Additionally, SHOW RUNNER covers show running as a career, discussing the hard realities and many pleasures of the job, including selling oneself, finding work, negotiating for a percentage of a show's profits, and more.

      Dear Professor Clements:
I just wanted to thank you for the eternally-helpful advice and wisdom that you impart in Show Runner. I'm new to being a talk show creator but I feel much better prepared for the struggle ahead after having read (and re-read x3) your book. By struggle, I mean to learn how to do the job well.

My talk show is my first piece to be registered with the WGA and its development is going really well. Since I've been having many "firsts" as creator, I've been keeping a slow but steady pace with it. Should the powers-that-be give me a shot to show run my own show (I know now, after having read your book, that I won't be giving myself this job), you can be sure that I'll be having your book in arms reach even then as a constant reference.

      Many thanks again.

5 out of 5 stars SHOW RUNNER Shows How to Succeed in TV!.......2005-01-19

Steve Clements' SHOW RUNNER is two books in one--part primer about how to produce variety and talk shows for television, and it's also a tell-all memoir. The voice of years of experience in Hollywood came through loud and clear in his conversational style. Clements dishes the dirt while giving solid lessons, sometimes even with charts, about television production.

They say, "Those who can--do. And those who can't--teach." From what I read, Steve Clements does both very well. His book tells about years of experience as a top television producer, and his background as a professor comes through in a well written text that's never boring.

I learned the answer to what Clements referred to as the eternal question: What does a producer do? I found out there are many kinds of producers with varying duties -line producers, segment producers, field producers and more.

I would recommend SHOW RUNNER to anyone who is considering a career in television production or to people who want to find out the inside stories about television in Hollywood. It's a fun and informative read!

Currently, computer users must navigate a sea of guidebooks, frequently asked questions (FAQs), and wizards to perform a task such as searching the Web or creating a spreadsheet. While Donald Norman acknowledges that the personal computer allows for "flexibility and power," he also makes its limitations perfectly clear. "The personal computer is perhaps the most frustrating technology ever," he writes. "It should be quiet, invisible, unobtrusive." His vision is that of the "information appliance," digital tools created to answer our specific needs, yet interconnected to allow communication between devices.

His solution? "Design the tool to fit so well that the tool becomes a part of the task." He proposes using the PC as the infrastructure for devices hidden in walls, in car dashboards, and held in the palm of the hand. A word of caution: some of Norman's zealotry leads to a certain creepiness (global positioning body implants) and goofiness (electric-power-generating plants in shoes). His message, though, is reasonably situated in the concept that the tools should bend to fit us and our goals: we sit down to write, not to word process; to balance bank accounts, not to fill in cells on a spreadsheet. In evenly measuring out the future of humanity's technological needs--and the limitations of the PC's current incarnation--Norman presents a formidable argument for a renaissance of the information appliance. --Jennifer Buckendorff

      Book Description

Technologies have a life cycle, says Donald Norman, and companies and their products must change as they pass from youth to maturity. Alas, the computer industry thinks it is still in its rebellious teenage years, exulting in technical complexity. Customers want change. They are ready for products that offer convenience, ease of use, and pleasure. The technology should be invisible, hidden from sight.

In this book, Norman shows why the computer is so difficult to use and why this complexity is fundamental to its nature. The only answer, says Norman, is to start over again, to develop information appliances that fit people's needs and lives. To do this companies must change the way they develop products. They need to start with an understanding of people: user needs first, technology last--the opposite of how things are done now. Companies need a human-centered development process, even if it means reorganizing the entire company. This book shows how.

3 out of 5 stars The Case for Information Appliances.......2004-09-17

The content strives to support the design of information appliances due to the complexity of the computer coupled with creeping featurism. Human centered design must be used to overcome the increasing complexity.

Chapters 7 (Being Analog) and 8 (Why is Everything So Difficult to Use) are reminiscent of Things that Make Us Smart and The Design of Everyday Things also by Norman.

Chapters 9 and 10 focus on human centered development by defining it as a process and then describing 'immutable principles' that should apply. Six disciplines of user experience are identified.

As I progressed through the book, I had to continually return to the cover and back pages, rereading the title and description to remind myself of what the book is about. Read the two referenced books first!

chance to pick up "The Invisible Computer" I had high hopes.
Unfortunately, this work didn't provide the same insight and
focus as his previous books such as "The Design of Everyday
      Things".

Throughout the work Norman draws upon "Crossing the Chasm"
and "Inside the Tornado: Marketing Strategies from Silicon
Valley's Cutting Edge" [both by Geoffrey Moore]. Also
heavily emphasized are the ideas put forth by "The

Innovator's Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms
to Fail." All of these books are interesting--but I wanted
      something from Norman himself.

Chapter 7, "Being Analog", was more in line with what I had
come to expect from Norman. He ends this chapter with this:
"Alas, most of today's machines, especially the computer,
force people to use them on their own terms, terms that are
antithetical to the way people work and think. The result is
frustration, an increase in the rate of error (usually
blamed on the user--human error--instead of on faulty
design), and a general turning away from technology. Will
the interaction between people and machines be done
correctly in the future? Might schools of computer science
start teaching the human-centered approach that is necessary
to reverse the trend? I don't see why not." That's what I'm
looking for! If only the rest of the book had followed that
      passion.

Instead focusing on human factors and man-machine

interface issues, Norman wanders discussing substitutable
goods vs. nonsubstitutable goods, a rehash of why software
is hard to write (and the mythical man month), and even some
embarrassing admissions now that he'd spent some time outside
academia and worked a bit in industry: "Time, or rather the
lack of it, I was starting to learn, is one of the greatest
barriers to quality". As my young nieces would say to me,
      "duh!"

Finally, although written in the late 1990's with the

paperback edition published in 1998, I found the text to
already be a bit dated. You don't realize how quickly the
computer industry moves until you find a book frozen in time
      like this one.

My recommendation is to read Norman's other works and the
works he recommends here (Crossing the Chasm, Inside the
Tornado, and Innovator's Dilemma). Finally, I recommend
"Machine Beauty" by David Gelernter. It provides more
passion and keener insights than this work--and is generally
      more fun to read!

4 out of 5 stars A good read, although difficult to accept his major thesis.......2002-01-30

This book covers in detail the role technology has pervasively interrupted our lives by intruding into everyday living. His major point is that we should have small, independent devices that do one task and one task well, rather than a general-purpose computer to do many tasks. Personally as a technologist I disagree with his major assumptions and points and found the book and some of it's major themes troubling.

An example is the way children interact with computers compared to senior citizens. When a child grows up with something is becomes natural. Most children who have access to a computer at an early stage find it as natural as using a video/DVD player, television or CD player. If the technology is introduced at an early stage it become part of the natural language of the child. Normal disagrees with this, and I think although he is a well researched observer that this is one failing of the book.

It wasn't until I reached the last quarter of the book that I could start to agree with his ideas and see the point he was trying to make. That is that some devices work as an appliance. The examples of the TiVo (which we don't have here in Australia) seem best to fit the example. They do one thing, and do it well. Network Computers are the other example, where the complexity of the device is hidden from the user (although he still feels uncomfortable with NC's as they are still "computers".)

Norman's style of writing made me think I had skipped back a few pages every now and then as he often will repeat himself in greater detail over points he thinks are important.

If you're a technologist you should read it. But don't take it as gospel. Although Normal is correct in some of his point, you need to use your own experience and environment to understand the points he is trying to make, rather than accepting them carte blanch.

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas... if lacking in firm foundations.......2001-08-20

While this book generally manages to be a good read for those developing both the management technique behind the software and the software itself, it spends a great deal of time looking at problems and fails to offer any real solutions. Norman is a great writer, and the ideas set out are important - just lacking completion.
