Book Description
For dozens of developing countries, the financial upheavals of the 1980s have set back economic development by a decade or more. Poverty in those countries has intensified as they struggle under the burden of an enormous external debt. In 1988, more than six years after the onset of the crisis, almost all the debtor countries were still unable to borrow in the international capital markets on normal terms. Moreover, the world financial system has been disrupted by the prospect of widespread defaults on those debts. Because of the urgency of the present crisis, and because similar crises have recurred intermittently for at least 175 years, it is important to understand the fundamental features of the international macroeconomy and global financial markets that have contributed to this repeated instability.
This project on developing country debt, undertaken by the National Bureau of Economic Research, provides a detailed analysis of the ongoing developing country debt crisis. The project focuses on the middle-income developing countries, particularly those in Latin America and East Asia, although many lessons of the study should apply as well to other, poorer debtor countries. The project analyzes the crisis from two perspectives, that of the international financial system as a whole (volume 1) and that of individual debtor countries (volumes 2 and 3).
This second volume contains lengthy and detailed case studies of four Latin American nations—Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Mexico—providing a wealth of comparative data and new statistics on the general economic development of each nation. The authors explore the various factors that contributed to the debt crisis in each country and analyze how the crisis was managed once it had taken hold. Trenchant economic analyses are enchanced by assessments of the stark political realities behind the policy choices facing each nation.

This book was a wonderful read - it gave me insights to different cultures and I felt like an insider on the streets of Paris and New York. I would be sure to look up some of these if I ever had the chance to visit these cities. Also loved the inside look at airlines operations. The weaving together of distant lives is a reminder that the world is continually becoming a smaller place and, despite distances,the impact we all have on one another.

I think this book is a work of art in itself. It is detailed with not just specs of the television series but a wonderful bio of Mervyn Peake, along with many of his original drawings. The lovely photos, anecdotal accounts, notes, scene and costume info, etc. are really interesting. Trust me, if you love the BBC series, this hefty book is the perfect companion!
A Lavish Re-visitation of the BBC Adaptation.......2001-08-19
I have the U.K Edition of this title, and bought it on the spot after a cursury perusal of it's pages. Anyone who enjoys costume, set decoration and knowing more about what goes into a film's production would enjoy this book. Plus, there is a very thorough section with backround and biographical information on the author; Mervyn Peake, containing a great deal of information I had no idea about concerning him, his life and his work. This section alone is worth the cost of the book, as it gives unique insight into the man who created the world of Gormenghast.
The pictures are clear, with many costume details. There are also pictures of Mervyn Peake and his family, as well as some of his artwork. Absolutley fascinating. If you enjoyed the BBC Adaptation, or merely enjoyed it's aesthetics, you will enjoy this.
Perfect Companion to the Series.......2001-07-09
A great many of those who have just finished viewing the Gormenghast miniseries will undergo serious withdrawal symptoms. This book, compiled by the producer of the miniseries, will provide another fix of this highly addictive delight. The large-format paperback presents a balanced mix of cast interviews, excerpts from Peake's novels, costume details, production and direction methods, and design philosophies. It is heavily illustrated in color. If you join me in believing Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("Steerpike") to be the most gorgeous and talented creature yet to appear on this planet, buy two copies of this book. You're going to need one to cut up and hang on your walls!

This book was very informative and helpful and I would recommend it to others who have handhelds and don't know its full potential. I am not very "follow the directions" literate but the book was easy to follow and step by step for the dummies in all of us!

Not a bad book but the Axim is pretty self explanatory without it. It may come in handy if you want to use yours for a GPS or want to add something cool to the CF slot like a camera. Other than that, I probably could have learned just as much surfing the Web for other users.
Axim X51V Second Edition.......2006-03-15
xim Handheld Second Edition. I thought it was a hardcopy of the Axim X51V manual that dell no longer offers so I ordered it form amazon. Well, this Second Edition was not really a manual but a hard copy of what the Axim X51V can do. It is a very nice book but since the Axim is very new to me I needed a manual of everything I could do with the axim including on how to accurately work the wireless capability. I enjoyed reading this handheld second edition and it did help me a lot in understanding the axim. But, of course it was not a true manual that is very murch needed but not offered anymore by dell because people would loose their manuals and want replacement manuals that are probably expensive to reproduce since the manual would be so large. In closing I do believe as the Dell Axim Handheld Second Edition book goes it is very nice but still it does not in detail train a person in "How to Do Everything" like a Axim X51v manual would do it you could still buy one. Without more detailed information about the operating system and its methods, this book is a useless waste of time. I threw it in the trash after 15 minutes.

This book does not offer what I was looking for, namely some in-depth information on the Axim PDA. There is a lengthy chapter devoted to the stupid games you can play on this device. But I was hoping to learn how (if at all possible) you can create a shortcut to rotate the display. Or how to always have Word and Excel start up at a predefined zoom level. Instead the book tells you how to play BallBreaker.

Exactly what I was hoping for..........2003-12-28
I ordered this book in July when I got my Axim X5. It was delayed in printing and I did not receive it until December. By the time it came, I think I had pretty much given up my dream of using my Axim instead of paper. But I started reading the book,and found so much useful information in it...I feel like I have a new "toy" all over again.
I'm pretty savvy with Microsoft Office on the desktop, but there was just so much that I wouldn't have figured out without the book -- or it would have taken me a long time. I would recommend reading it like a novel, and putting it down to test what you think you understand. When I did that, I found that maybe I had skimmed the paragraph, and did not know exactly how to do it.
After spending one day engrossed with this book...I think I can put the old paper Franklin away for 2004. It inspired me to test what I read, transfer files from my desktop, scan documents to transfer to my Axim, and feel comfortable to carry my Axim with me...and know that I will have everything I need. Also, I understand why the things that are done are done, so I am less likely to do something out of ignorance that is dangerous to my system or my data.
I am no Pocket PC wizard, so I found this extremely helpful. If you are already an expert, I'm not sure it will be so enlightening, but I'd imagine you would still get useful tidbits from it. If you are a newbie...you're going to love it! Just...try not not skim, you'll miss something, and test every new thing you read. You'll be amazed at what you learn.
Worth the time and money.......2003-12-20
I found this book to be extremely helpful. My Dell Axim X5 was becoming more of a bookend than a tool, and after the money I spent on it, it was a shame. With this book I learned about much more that I can do with it and now am a much more satisfied Axim customer!
An okay book.......2003-12-19
The book has some very good highlights and covers the entire range of the Dell Axim. It is up to date, covering the latest pocket pc from Dell as well as the older models. However, the book is not a "how-to" reference that I thought it was. It will tell you what is available, but not how to use it. The book does not go into detail on using the Dell Axim, but refers to web sites for further information. This is not what I bought the book for. If you are looking for specific information on using the Dell Axim, this is not the place to find it.
