This book was recommended by the National Restaurant Association for their cost control course. I thought it was easy to read and clear. I would recommend it. The author, Jack Miller, was from St. Louis, where he was Head of the restaurant program at St. Louis Community College...

Interestingly enough, in a course which claims to instruct students in making wise spending choices and detailed accounts of managing expenses, I found that this required text refuted such theories. I was forced to buy this book, and feel that the content and the overall ineptitude of the quality, only re-inforced a few of the book's points, which were not so informative. It reminded me that I wasted so much time and money on something that served no useful purpose. I guess it would be like ordering a multitude of food products that would never have any use in a specific operation. For this reason, it taught very valuable lessons. I believe, however, they could have been learned by spending this money on something more useful. Very poorly written, and often inaccurate. Not at all helpful in trying to apply this information in a real life setting. Perhaps, actually visiting a restaurant or working in one might provide the authors a little more insight.

Since the onset of globalisation, protective labour legislation has been deeply eroded throughout the industrialised world. In its place we have a plethora of new employment phenomena such as flexible work time, temporary work services, decentralisation of collective bargaining, private fee-charging employment placement services -- a wide variety of arrangements in which employers and individual workers reach mutual agreement with little or no reliance on legal norms of government regulation. What are the dimensions and implications of this trend? And how should we go about ensuring the continuing effectiveness of labour law as an instrument of social ordering? These important questions drew a group of prominent labour law scholars from eight major developed countries to the Fifth Japan Institute of Labour (JIL) Comparative Labour Law Seminar in Tokyo in November 1998. Each participant presented papers and engaged in group discussion on the following topics: + changes in labour market regulations, such as abolition of state-monopolised employment placement services and deregulation of fixed-term contracts; + trends in individual labour relations, such as working hour flexibilisation and expansion of derogation toward individual consent; and + developments in collective labour relations, such as the movements from centralised bargaining to company- or plant-level bargaining and from trade unions to works councils. This book is one of the finest art books I've ever purchased. The printing is excellent, the art is the best collection of the Clayton Brothers work that I've seen. The reading is insightful and well thought out. Even if you have never seen the Rob or Christian's work you still need this book.

This is one of the funniest books on the market right now. It will have you laughing and wondering if the contents were a part of the author's life or if he just has a vivid imagination. Needless to say, it is very descriptive and the things the main character gets into are just too wild. This book was a blast to read and if you would like your funny bone tickled, get it, you'll be glad you did.

"A Day in the Life of Rob" is one of the funniest, craziest books out there. Rob starts off his day waking up and falls in the shower. lol. Then can't find nothing to eat in his apartment in Chicago. Leaves his apartment and falls back slightly denting the door after he locks it. Then on his way to work some of the craziest, funniest, sexiest things happen. A must read! Truely one of a kind masterpiece that will have you raise your eyebrows and laugh!

This is what's so attractive about this good looking book. It is not the usual biography colored by the writer's vision and philosophy trying to rewrite history. Fred Friendly's memoir Due to Circumstances Beyond Our Control... (1967) remains important for its fundamental truths and warnings about the role of television in American society. Anyone who cares about journalism, about important national issues and the way the media addresses them, must read this book.

It has been said that Friendly and Edward R. Murrow invented television journalism; certainly their program See It Now set a standard for journalistic courage and principle that in many ways has rarely been equaled. After it was replaced by quiz shows that earned higher ratings, Friendly went on to produce other important news programming and, ultimately, became president of CBS News. He resigned in 1966 in protest when the network decided to run I Love Lucy reruns rather than Senate hearings on Vietnam, calling that decision "the most important act of my life."

The book closes with an impassioned plea for the creation of a commercial-free public television network that would be free from such pressures; Friendly was later involved in PBS public affairs programming. What he understood is that the use of the public airwaves is a privilege, not a right, and that it comes with serious responsibilities. As he wrote, "Each time that the FCC grants a radio or television license, those to whom it is awarded walk out with a medallion symbolizing service to all the people their station can reach ... commercial television has the resources and professional talent to do all the things that television should be doing, but because of its stockholders, it does not feel that it can often afford to appeal to excellence." The issues that concerned him are still crucial to television journalism today.

Monumental Inroads to Ethical Broadcasting.......2005-11-06

This occupational memoir traces Fred Friendly's sixteen years with Columbia Broadcasting System where he spearheaded the production of hundreds of public service programs and documentaries. With Ed Murrow he brought series like See It Now and CBS Reports to light.

He resigned in 1966, his last two years serving as president of the news division. He saw the direction of what he was steadfastly accomplishing regarding the organization's responsible handling of the news be summarily emasculated in just several days. The power to decide what was newsworthy was now relegated to a pawn (Schnieder) who was not versed in international events, but heavily influenced by pure profits and the advice of the new efficiency experts. A firm and cold decision by this pawn to air a fifth rerun of an I Love Lucy episode (followed by an eigth rerun of The Real McCoys) over the extremely pertinent testimony of Ambassador George Kennan in the Vietnam Hearings was more than Fred could bear. His principles wouldn't allow it. Every news executive pleaded at the time to air Kennan, but to no avail.

This book is beautifully written and very engaging. It includes Fred's letter of resignation. It is a masterpiece of literature.

This book, or Fred's life, could easily be made into a movie. It has all of the captivating elements of the best dramas. It might appropriately be called "The Big Switch" (which is how the New York Times described the control of the air time).

Fred Friendly is an American hero. He remained determined in his pursuit of journalistic excellence and is responsible for a six hundred round table discussion - 83 that appeared on PBS that featured moderators like Harvard Law School's Arthur Miller. These were the Columbia University Seminars on Media and Society... dubbed the Fred Friendly Seminars. The panels included a wide array of top names in all branches government and business.

I will end by quoting Mr. Friendly in his later life:

"Our purpose is not to make up anybody's mind, but to open minds, your mind, and to make the agony of decision-making so intense that you can escape only by thinking."

This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn more about Cisco Routers. It covers networking basics at the beginning of the book, so its not totally above a beginners head; but it also includes step by step advanced configuration.

I always have this book on our shelf for myself or any of our employees at Imagine WiFi LLC to refer to when working with Cisco Routers.

Easy reading for new users, some technical errors.......2003-09-20

This book will introduce you to the basics of LAN/WAN and Cisco router technology. You should not use this book as a single source for the CCNA test. This book is best suited for, as Chris Brenton says in his own review; "the individuals who needs to get up to speed quickly on deploying and managing Cisco routers." There are some technical errors and no errata as yet so watch out for them.

Excellent reference.......2002-05-22

If you want real world knowledge buy this book. This is not a CCNA "how to pass the test" book; this is an "everyday usable" book. It helped me much more with my work than the Lammle CCNA guide. Very helpful for day to day operations.

Great book for those with some Cisco knowledge.......2001-06-03

Mastering Cisco Routers is a great book for understanding many aspects of Cisco routers not typically covered by CCNA books. The author has great information on how to secure your router, usefull information on creating access lists to block standard DoS attacks, and some great information on VPNs. The book also covers TFTP, Syslog, and SNMP setup for both the router, and UNIX and Windows hosts. The last 2 chapters present very useful scenarios for both large and small networks. The only things that were lacking was the chapters on routing (doesn't really go into any detail on setting up routing protocols), and the chapter on LAN protocols which barely touches on IPX, AppleTalk, and NetBEUI. Overall, if you already have a decent understanding of the Cisco IOS, and want to get some knowledge outside of the normal CCNA type information, this is the book for you.

This is a very good book for anyone willing to understand Cisco routing (CCNA/CCNP).Of course some people may find it "the poorest book ever written on Cisco Routing";It all depends on how you read books and what you are expecting from it.This book is an easy to understand way to handle complexity.
