Remembering old roads.......2006-03-10

A short and decently written account of the Burma Shave phenomenon that had me, as a child from the 1940's, searching along the northwestern two-lane road sides for those pithy and succinct phrases which always ended in "Burma Shave". They never failed to delight and I carried several sayings with me well into adulthood. This book brings back the delight and gives a nicely written history of what it was all about.

Captivating story of one of advertising's greatest triumphs.......2000-08-05

With the low-brow humor of "whazzzzzup" and high-speed editing of MTV-style ads dominating the landscape, it's almost hard to imagine how memorable the quaint multi-sign Burma-Shave ads were. The combination of clever verse and brilliant exposition -- stretching along the wide-open road until the punch line could be delivered -- is unlike any other ad delivery in history.

Author Frank Rowsome, Jr. tells the story of the campaign's creation and life, and provides a listing of all signs from the first in1927 ("Shave the modern way / No Brush / No Lather / No Rub-in / Big Tube 35-c Drug Stores / Burma Shave") through their last in 1963 ("Our Fortune / Is Your / Shaven Face / It's Our Best / Advertising Space / Burma-Shave"). In between is an amazingly clever collection of poems, including contest winners, shorter signs for smaller displays, spin-off tooth powder and lotion jingles, and regional ads.

Great reading for those remembering the signs as well as those who just want to get a smile from some great advertising - one of the USA's most underappreciated art forms.

Best of nostalgia.......1999-03-06

I read this book twenty odd years ago, and I loved it. It brought back such fond childhood memories of my days on the farm in Belsano, PA, where a set of the signs stood soldier-like in the lower field of my grandad's farm. I heard from the grown-ups that someone paid him to put them there, and money was scarce in those days.

I was always intrigued by those signs, so when I saw the book advertised for the first time, it was a must-have for me. I cherished owning a complete set of the verses, most of which I'd never seen.

The book is well-written in that it has a lot of historical fact, loads of humor, and the story-telling holds your interest to the last page. One of those "can't put it down" types.

Somewhere in my travels, I've lost my copy and have mourned it's loss. Thanks to Internet, I will once again have my own cherished copy of "Verse by the Side of the Road."

Hard to find, easy to like........2004-03-15

This is an out-of-print book that I've been looking in used stores for for years. I finally decided to just purchase online. Glad I did. It's a fairly simple read, maybe 1-2 hours, but it sure did take me back to the show. All kinds of quotes, stories, and sayings, primarily from Chris the DJ. It also has numerous pictures of just about every cast member. Anyone might enjoy this, but fanatics of Chris and "Northern Exposure" should love it. It goes well with the soundtrack. This book can be found many places online, but for many times the original cost. Watch for the new "NE" DVD too.

Many of the witticisms and reflections herein wil tickle your fancy even if you've never seen the show. But enough of them hinge on knowing a character or remembering an episode that it'll be most appreciated by someone who's actually seen (and remembers) the series.

This book is a must for all Northern Eposure fans out there! Chris' insight into love, life and the whole karmic enchilada will give you smiles and possbily provoke some inner reflection on how you view the world.

The peculiar and personal weltanschauung of Chris Stevens.......2003-05-03

"Chris-in-the Morning: Love, Life, and the Whole Karmic Enchilada" is one of those books I would have loved to have put together. Louis Chunovic is not the "writer" of this "Northern Exposure" book, but rather has "Compiled and Edited" the proceedings, which are, of course, based on the television series created by Joshua Brand & John Falsey. The idea was to take pretty much everything said by the character of Chris Stevens (played by John Corbett), the voice and soul of the borough of Arrowhead County for everyone who loyally listens to K-BEAR's "Chris-in-the-Morning" radio show. I am not sure if every quote was actually uttered over the air, or simply in the radio station, and not on the streets of Cicely, but you get the idea. The result is that from the literal call of the wild to the complex vagaries of love to the fine art of curing a hangover, this book provides (in its own words) "a veritable aurora borealis of Chris's own recollection, speculations, dreams, and philosophies."

After an introduction that recalls how reading Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" changes his life from a budding hooligan of fifteen into an artist, this book is divided into two sections. Part I consists of Raps, Rants, and Wrenching Times. We are treated to The Chris Stevens Story, culled from his walks down memory lane, and then Chunovic tries to get thematic, with mixed results. Remember, for the most part these observations are divorced from the original context of their respective episodes. Part II is a catch-all section that offers Opinions and Observations, A-Z, which would be from Aging ("People impose all these chronological imperatives on themselves") to Zen ("See Carpentry; Mathematics; Plumbing; Technology") for those keeping track. As I said, I appreciate the attempt to present this collection of observations made by Chris Stevens as an articulated philosophical position, but this is more of a cultured and idiosyncratic weltanschauung. The key thing is that Chunovic is not trying to create consistent ontological, epistemological, or axiological positions. These are just scattered seeds of wisdom, embedded in Chris's recollections, speculations, dreams, and philosophies. Besides, the pleasure here is just getting a chance to re-read those big long speeches Chris used to unload on "Northern Exposure." The meaning, dear reader, lies not in Chris's words but in ourselves. Pick and choose as you desire.

My one minor complaint would be that the writers who came up with these great speeches and choice epithets are not credited. Allow me to rectify that with a list of all the writers who wrote on "Northern Exposure": Sybil Adelman, David Assael, Kate Boutilier, Joshua Brand, Henry Bromell, Jordan Budde, Mitchell Burgess, David Chase, Sean Clark, Denise Dobbs, Sam Egan, John Falsey, Diane Frolov, Robin Green, Barbara Hall, Karen Hall, Ellen Herman, Jessica Klein, Dennis Koenig, Jeff Melvoin, Geoffrey Neigher, Mark B. This book is a collection of quotes from our favorite DJ from Cicely, Alaska: Chris Stevens. This book is divided into categories and chapters, so it's easy to find something about a particular topic or occasion. Some of the quotes are short one-liners, and others are long passages that delve deep into the meaning of life. EASY 1-2-3 BOOK; HIDDEN PAYROLL SECRETS REVEALED.......2006-12-16

For people who just want to know how to use Quickbooks so they can get on with their business, this book is straight and to-the-point. Every page is in a 1-2-3-4-5-6 step format, which is quite easy to follow. Also, unlike some books, Show Me Quickbooks does address the Payroll function (a part of Quickbooks which Intuit--since it wants users to subscribe to its Quickbooks Payroll Service for a monthly fee--has programmed to be, without 'tweaking', initially unuseable.
To access the payroll function, you must first make sure the initial "full payroll" option is activated. Do this by clicking Edit/Preferences/Payroll & Employees/Company Preferences, and checking the "Full Payroll" option.

Next, on page 39, under the heading "Set up Payroll Deductions" the book tells you to select the "Payroll Item List" from the Lists Menu. News flash--there is no "Payroll Item List". For the benefit of others who encounter this problem...I was able to make the Payroll Items list magically appear by performing the following steps (THESE STEPS ARE NOT SHOWN IN THE BOOK):
1. Type "payroll item" in the search box.
2. From the selections available, click "adding payroll items"
3. Click "payroll setup interview"
4. Click "What if menu item isn't there"
5. Click "payroll manually"
6. Click "set my company file to use manual calculations"....and (after a dire warning that daring to proceed will alter your program forever), the program initializes the manual payroll function.
7. Voila! The Payroll List, and the ability to do your own payroll without paying for the Quickbooks Online Payroll Service magically appears in your Quickbooks 2006 program.
