Book Description
The sound management of public finances is, in Williams' view, the most important factor in attaining the twin objectives of economic growth and improvement in the standard of living in small open developing economies. While looking at the challenges of public finance management in small states, with a focus on Barbados, this book suggests strategies of fiscal and microeconomic management for small economies that will permit them to ensure macroeconomic stability while promoting economic growth and development. In discussing the philosophy of public finance, it examines small size and openness, using both traditional criteria and modern perspectives of liberalized systems. It deals with the challenge of avoiding overly expansionary budgets and the need for counter cyclical policies in relation to macroeconomic objectives. This book also discusses state involvement in commercial types of enterprise and the implications for efficiency and economic growth. The Keynesian approach to fiscal spending is compared with the structuralist approach, which takes into account initial conditions and inflexibilities facing small developing economies. The government's role in financing accelerated economic development, its social responsibility, and the balancing need for fiscal discipline are also considered. The public finance performance of governments is seen as facing important challenges to its capacity to champion economic development given the increasing global perception of a mostly regulatory and stabilizing role of government.

Book Description
The experience of decades in a few pages: how microphones work, what the various types do, and how to use them in just about any musical situation.
Customer Reviews:
Just What the Title Says.......2005-06-05
This book delivers what it promises. It would be of little or no use to a recording engineer of someone who already knows a lot about recording but that is not the target audience of this little tome. The target is people who want to learn more about microphones but who know little or nothing to begin with.
The book starts off with a little bit of basic information on sound and then turns to a discussion of different types of microphones. The pros and cons of each type are briefly reviewed. This is in terms of directionality and in terms of type of recording elements. From there, the book moves on to discussion of how best to mic different situations like vocals, strings, piano and drums. My one complaint is that there is nothing on wind instruments.
One peculiarity of this book is a result of it coming from Britain. That means that some terms may not be familiar to American readers. Condenser replaces capacitor and valve replaces tube. This should not cause any problem but it may throw some people at first.
For many people, this may well be the only book ever to be needed on the subject of microphones. At the very least, it is a good introduction at an excellent price.
A Good Book for The Price.......2005-03-04
This a very informative book, especially for the price and size. It is a good book to through in your gig bag or have around for a quick reference but I would not rely on this book totally because some things are left out.

Book Description
Class, Critics, and Shakespeare is a provocative contribution to "the culture wars." It engages with an ongoing debate about literary canons, the democratization of literary study, and of higher education in general.
For a generation at least, academic readings of literary works, including those of Shakespeare, have often challenged privilege based on race, gender, and sexuality. Sharon O'Dair observes that in these same readings, class privilege has remained effectively unchallenged, despite repeated invocations of it within multiculturalism. She identifies what she sees as a structurally necessary class bias in academic literary and cultural criticism, specifically in the contemporary reception of William Shakespeare's plays.
The author builds her argument by offering readings of Shakespeare that put class at the center of the analysis--not just in Shakespeare's plays or in early modern England, but in the academy and in American society today. Individual chapters focus on The Tempest and education, Timon of Athens and capitalism, Coriolanus and political representation. Other chapters treat the politics of cultural tourism and land-use in the Pacific northwest, and analyze the politics of the academic left in the U.S. today, focusing on the debate between what has been called a "social" left and a "cultural" left.
The author's quest is to understand why an intellectual culture that values diversity and pluralism can so easily disdain and ignore the working-class people she grew up with. Her provocative and heartfelt critique of academic culture will challenge and enlighten a broad range of audiences, including those in cultural studies, American studies, literary criticism, and early modern literature.
Sharon O'Dair is Associate Professor of English, University of Alabama.

Book Description
Television history was made on April 30, 1997, when comedian Ellen DeGeneres and her sitcom alter-ego Ellen Morgan, "came out" to her close friends and 36 million viewers. This groundbreaking episode represented a significant milestone in Amerian television. For the first time, a TV series centered around a lesbian character who was portrayed by an openly gay actor. The millions of viewers who tuned in that historic night were witnesses to a new era in television. THE PRIME TIME CLOSET offers an entertaining and in-depth glimpse into homosexuality on television from the 1950s through today. Divided into four sections, each devoted to a major television genre, this unique book explores how gay men and lesbians have been depicted in over three hundred television episodes and made-for-TV films. These include medical series, police/detective shows, situation comedies and TV dramas. THE PRIME TIME CLOSET also reveals how television's treatement of homosexuality has reflected and reinforced society's ignorance about and fear of gay men and lesbians. At the same time, it celebrates programs like Ellen and Will and Grace that have broken new ground in their sensitive and enlightened approach to homosexuality and gay-related themes. This book is witty and insightful, accessible and illuminating, a look into what has become an integral part of American media culture.
Customer Reviews:
Coming Out of the Closets.......2003-06-21
Having read Stephen Capsuto's book "Alternate Channels" I was eager to read this fairly recent work by Stephen Tropiano on gay and lesbian representation on the small screen. Both books are valuable and reliable resources but I think to compare both books against each other is a little unjust to both authors. Tropiano brings to light shows and episodes that Capsuto missed or forgot to mention for one reason or another and really picks up where Capsuto's earlier work leaves off.
That being said I did have a few problems with this book.
First, Tropiano categorizes representation by genre of show. For example, early homosexual image, law and cop shows, dramas, and sitcoms. While this is a unique style that works well, it sometimes hard for the reader to grasp the social significance of a show done in the 1950's when in the next paragraph he is talking about a more recent episode and show. A chronological style would have enabled the reader to see the social connotations and historical references better, I think.
Author Tropiano does a good job of describing the episodes in detail (a little too good at times) giving the reader a full detailed summary of the individual episodes' plot with dialogue. Where I got frustrated as a reader was the fact that Tropianos goes on and on describing episode after episode; without ever giving his critical insight on why he thinks the episode(s) are significant. (Being a gay studies and popular culture critic myself this is also a familiar and dangerous trap that I have fallen into myself.)
It is nit-picky but I noticed some very oblivious typos and mis-wording and I'm usually the last person to notice such references.
Still all and all, this is highly valuable text for television and gay studies readers and scholars alike. There is no denying the depth of the research that was done here and for that I gladly applaud and say "Bravo!"
Wonderful book: Attention All Universities and Colleges.......2002-08-15
Stephen Tropiano's book is a ground breaking, scholarly book about a topic which has rarely received such meticulous attention. The book is well-written and a page turner. An enormous amount of research went into the book. Tropiano has created a definitive study of the history of homosexuality on television. One cannot help but be amazed at how powerful television was (and is) in defining how entire groups of people were seen ~ and judged. It was not too long ago that [homosexuals] were being defined as "a social problem" or "having an illness" on well-intentioned but blatantly off-based news programs and some of the first produced talk shows. I recommend this book highly to colleges, universities, and the general public.
FAAAAAABULOUS!!!!.......2002-07-06
I use the word 'faaaaabulous' for Stephen Tropiano's "The Prime Time closet" not to perpetuate a stereotypical gay word but as an homage to Tropiano's engaging, offbeat combination of camp and intelligence in presenting an incredibly accurate, exhaustive and, ultimately, extremely excellent study of the history of gays and lesbians on television. It is impressive enough that the author managed to gather hundreds of hours of television episodes and news programs (dating back to the 1950s) that featured gays and lesbians. But his analysis of where we've been, where we are and where we are going is so impressive that I'm sure it is just a matter of time before someone (hopefully Tropiano) takes this book and turns it into a historical documentary a la "The Celluloid Closet."
Tropiano fittingly pays tribute to Celluloid's author, the late Vito Russo, in the book's introduction, and then, for lack of a better word, picks up his mantle and runs with it. This is a thorough, intelligent piece of work. It's important. It's funny. It's generally readable. And, most of all, it's ACCURATE.
I'm of an age where I remember many of these episodes, yet never put them in the contextual order the author manages to. It is so clear to see that he is devoted to telling the truth about our representation - good and bad - and that he has dedicated what must have been years in order to bring this information to the general public. In fact, one of the most impressive things about this book to me is that it appeals to both gay and straight audiences, intellectuals and the general public, and men and women equally. In an age where we all seem to be ghettoized in our specific special interest groups, "Prime Time Closet" provides a bridge for all of us into the truth.
Grouping TV history by genre - medical dramas - law and order dramas - tv movies and miniseries - and comedy - was a brilliant idea because the categories really do cover most of the high (and "low") points of what is and was out there. The choice to box some episodes (a la TV Guide closeups) was hysterical as were many of Tropiano's lists towards the back of the book rating different tv episodes (check out the list of TV Variety shows rated on the Kinsey scale of most gay ("As gay as it gets," "Look Mary, a show for us," to least gay, "a touch of pink," "don't ask, don't tell." ) What I also like is that unlike so many "gay" books, Tropiano doesn't get mired in the camp. He just uses it as an occassional way to spice things up. Make no mistake about it, this is an intellectual work, and an extremely impressive one at that. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
By the way, I read a previous review of a reader chastising Tropiano for not being accurate in several places and implying the book probably has many more mistakes his "eagle" eye didn't catch. Wrong!!! Tropiano is correct in stating that the episode of "Family" (Rites of Friendship) premiered Sept. 28, 1976 because it was the opener of the season, not first aired Dec. 28, 1976 as the reviewer asserts. He also nitpicked about Tropiano leaving out minor episodes of "WKRP in Cincinnati" and "Murder She Wrote." Big deal. There are always going to be a few omissions like that in a book this large. The fact that Tropiano got about 99 and a half % of it right, is cause to be impressed and buy the book, not to take an opportunity to chastize an author that did valuable, important work. As for his criticism of Tropiano for sometimes using the term "homosexual" to refer to gay men and lesbians (he also uses the terms gays and lesbians) and likening it to calling an African American a "Negro," I don't know what to say. This author has written a compelling, authoritative survey of a subject about "homosexuality" on TV. Should he just leave out the word homosexual to be politically correct? And when did it become bad to be called a homosexual anyway??? The latter is more the sort of thing this book addresses so impressively.
PRIME TIME CLOSET.......2002-06-23
A summary from the book's author:
The Prime Time Closet takes an informative and entertaining look at the history of homosexuality on television. It examines how
TV has treated the subject of homosexuality and represented gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender characters on medical dramas,
police and detective shows, legal dramas, prime time and daytime soaps, teen dramas, made-for-TV movies, mini-series, and situation comedies. The book contains an appendix listing gay-themed episodes and characters from the mid-1950's through the present day.
Exhaustive, but many errors.......2002-06-22
Tropiano, otherwise known for his kitschy tours of imaginary tv towns, provides an exhaustive survey of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered television characters. The thematic approach makes it more engaging and readable than "Alternative Channels." But there are many errors and exclusions. The Room 222 episode "What is a Man?" aired December 3, 1971, not March 4, 1971. The Family episode "Rites of Friendship" aired December 28, 1976, not September 28, 1976. And that's just the ones I checked.
Several exclusions come immediately to mind: a stereotypical gay man named "Judy" on "Medical Center"; a gay photographer who fails to exercise interest in Jennifer on "WKRP in Cincinnati"; Robert Reed as a gay mystery writer on "Murder, She Wrote"; an auto mechanic who brings a same-sex date to a concert on "That 70's Show." Of course, no one has to include everything, but again I wonder what else the author missed.
Finally, the author frequently uses the outdated and offensive term "homosexual" in reference to gay persons. Would any writer today use the term "Negro" as a synonym for "African American"?

A Must For Your Bookshelf!.......2004-12-05
What can I say... if you do JDBC programming, you must have this book in your bookshelf. Great examples and super coverage of a very wide topic. You'll read it and continue to look back at it. Well worth the money!
an exceptionally comprehensive volume.......2003-11-11
JDBC is one of the most mature and widely used Java APIs. Even after the arrival of more recent tools and technologies like EJB's CMP and JDO, JDBC still remains a simple, fast, and reliable way of storing objects' state in an RDBMS. While conceptually this technology is quite straightforward, its evolution has made it more complex and voluminous. Many books have been trying to explain the main aspects of it over and over again, but the 3rd edition of "JDBC API Tutorial and Reference" goes far beyond that.
The book is divided into two major sections: the Tutorial and the Reference. Actually, there are four tutorials in the Part One: Basic, Advanced, MetaData, and Rowset. Here well-written explanations are followed by clear and detailed examples.
It is remarkable that Part Two, The Reference, is not your typical API reference with simply method signatures or redundant explanations of their arguments. This is an extremely well thought through description of how to use JDBC 3.0 API to achieve a particular goal. Every class has a solid overview, examples, schemas -- everything one needs to get the job done. The book also contains an Appendix for JDBC driver developers and another Appendix covering JDBC 3.0 API changes.
This book provides the most clear and comprehensive JDBC coverage that I have ever seen. It is not just a matter of its size of over 1200 pages, but although the result of a well designed book structure and clear delivery.
Mature and stable.......2003-08-01
Almost all practical commercial deployments of Java involve hooking to a back end database. Of the latter, relational databases are the dominant form. The first version of JDBC arose soon after Java was released, because of this compelling need. Since then, Sun has extended the functionality while still striving to keep its learning curve shallow, as compared to Microsoft's ODBC. Indeed, the latest Java 1.4 Standard Edition includes JDBC 3.0 in its entirety.
To document JDBC 3.0, Sun has put out the third edition of this book. The maturity of JDBC is reflected in its heft. The reference portion is voluminous. The tutorial section is like aged whisky; it goes down smoothly. Sun has had plenty of time to sandpaper rough edges and, based on user feedback, to add popularly requested capabilities.
The attraction of this book is that it describes a mature and stable product. In corporate terms, it is safe and conservative. In other words, you can develop with JDBC according to the book and be highly confident of success. At least insofar as your Java GUI conversing with the database. (The design of a GUI or a database is outside the purview of the book.)
The only JDBC book you will need.......2003-07-16
Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced JDBC programmer you will find useful information in this book. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is a tutorial on using JDBC which makes up four chapters. The tutorial starts with a look at JDBC 1.0. The next chapter looks at the additional features added to JDBC in 2.0 and 3.0. The third tutorial chapter looks at metadata. The final chapter examines the RowSet interface, which is complex enough to need its own chapter.
The remainder of the book (about 800 pages) is a reference containing a chapter for each class or interface in JDBC. Each chapter contains an overview of a class or interface, sections on anything of either special interest or complexity, and then a list of all the methods of the class or interface with complete descriptions. If a section applies to a particular version of JDBC, the version it applies to is clearly marked. The information contained in the reference is much more than you can find in the APIs. The reference section itself is well laid out to make the information you need easy to find.
This is probably the only JDBC book you will ever need. No matter which version of JDBC your database drivers support, you will find your answers in this book. The book is well written with clear explanations and plenty of code samples (which can be downloaded from the Sun web site) . Anyone working with JDBC will want this book by their side while they are coding.
the best JDBC book.......2003-06-26
If you are an experienced or intermediate programmer this is the only book you will need. Almost every bit of the JDBC is explaind. The API in the second part of the book is also very good, it is filled with explanations that the javadoc lacks.
