Editorial and "Kudzu" Comic Strips.......2002-07-06
This book is a combination of Doug Marlette's editorial comic strips and his political "Kudzu" comic strips covering the 1992 presidential election and Clinton's win. In addition, Doug has done several new strips especially for this book. There are also a few pages of text where Doug writes about Faux Bubba's and his thoughts/accounts of the '92 election (including his meeting with Bill Clinton). While it's obvious that Doug voted for Clinton and is left-of-center in his political views, the strips are mostly funny and mostly told from a southerner's prospective.

Book Description
"I saw the word Solipsist while reading the dictionary in 1993. I was living
in NYC at the time and the word defined how the city made me feel. I worked
on this book in several cities all over the world until 1996. The writing is
obsessive and claustrophobic. To be solipsistic is to totally realize the ego
and the nightmare of utter self-possession. I went for it and it swallowed me
whole." --Henry Rollins

Solid & Honest front to back...Great Read........2007-09-13
I had been writing for years when, after a speaking egagement at a university, a student suggested the similarities between Solipsist and the book I was promoting at the time Selections from the Serial Killer Cookbook (The Handbook for America's Youth) This student had said that the only book that spoke them as honestly as Selections from the Serial Killer Cookbook (The Handbook for America's Youth) was Solipsist.
Upon their suggestion, I picked up a copy for myself and was blown away by the way Mr. Rollins writes. The honesty in his writing is amazing. One can feel the emotion dripping from the pages and gripping you as you read. I must agree with the recommendation I was given, brutal, honest and very very good. I also picked up Eye Scream (Rollins, Henry)after reading Solipsist, I also recommend picking up a copy of that. It is a great read as well.
just realize what you're in for.......2004-01-06
I read this book because I was dating a guy who was into this book and Eye Scream. We shared a lot of similar outlooks on society and interaction that we hadn't been able to find in a lot of other people. He seemed to think that Henry Rollins was the author that shared that. I had really high hopes for the book.
The book really drew me in. I kept thinking that on one of these pages he was going to really get it. Here and there there would be a sentence or two that really hit the mark. But when I got to the end and realized that dream wasn't going to come to fruition I was quite disappointed. Everything he said was too much... too far... His unease was too extreme to be identified with. His anger was much the same. **I got the distinct impression that he was trying to write from the outside** He wanted to appeal to the young lost soul. He wanted all those angry youth to identify with them (and I hate the stereotype "angry youth"). But maybe that stereotype he was writing to was exactly that - a stereotype. A stereotype that was too far out to be real for even the most jaded teenager.
Now I'm not saying that it's impossible for someone out there to feel exactly the way he describes, I'm only saying that they are rare to the point of not being able to function in society and they are not him. Henry Rollins leads too successful of a life to have trouble doing the simple things he describes in his books, like making eye contact with a clerk at a store. I've seen him on TV (and I hadn't at the time). Henry Rollins is not writing his own feelings. He's just not.
And some people, like this guy I was dating at the time, probably find comfort in the feelings in the book. They may think they relate to them, as he did -- but what he was doing was extracting and twisting it into ideas he sort of felt. He wasn't that angry or that socially mal-adjusted. He just thought he was, I guess.
So in the end, what I want to leave you with is the idea that this book may make you even more jaded than you started if you have too high of hopes for the connection you expect to feel while reading it. You have to read this realizing that it's not Henry Rollins. It's a character that he has created that is not real, in an attempt to rope in the stereotyped angry youth. If you can keep this straight in your mind, it is excellently poetic -- good enough to keep a quote sheet from. Just don't expect a real, live, honest-to-god spilled soul.
i can not change or hide what i am even if i wantd to...........2003-10-20
when i first read "solipsist" i cried.
yes. i did... i am not some rollins fanatic, but i have to admit that this guy really knows what he is talking about.the way he describes loneliness, pain, humiliation that goes along sometimes with "being real" with women, the alienation that big cities can make you feel...this book sums it all up-in living colour, simple language and gut wrenching honesty.
rollins talks about situations that many of us go through- the need for someone, the sleepless nights after a loved one leaves...
the burning need to know where she is and what she is doing....
but! unlike others, rollins offers different solutions.rollins confronts his fear instead of being over sensitive (although his writing IS very sensitive and intelligent)- rollins offers confrontation instead of fear, long periods of loneliness instead of forced agony in marriage. he does NOT give the easy option.
he tells it like it is:"wonder where your EX is? let me assuer you-she is with someone else".brutal? yes.. but true.
this might not be easy reading, but whenever i was down, whenever i have felt bad about myself-whenever i woke up in the middle of the night- i opened "solipsist".didnt even matter which page ,and started reading.
this book is a MUST for everyone who has ever had a hard time and DIDNT break.
i will close this recommendation with a quote from "solipsist":
AND YOU NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU ARE.
WARRIOR.

The only one of his kind.......2003-08-30
Some people have called this work a little dark and a little self defeating. But I love henry rollin's work mainly because he tends to speak the truth even if its hard to swallow. He is willing to explore the harder parts of his character and in doing so makes some discoveries on the nature of things.

Book Description
GILL discovered Allegory in Humanities was a Subject without a Syllabus, a Topic without a Reading List. To deal with the subject he had to conceive of the Allegorical Mind. To write on the topic his essays had to be original and innovative. Gill redefined "allegory" as "extended figuration." Platonic poetry is allegory. From Sir Orfeo through Keats to Wallace Stevens, allegory is personified abstract things. He agreed with Kant that if things were permanent, then our consciousness is impermanent. Our knowledge of physical objects, mental states, and texts is fragmentary, never total. Rather than Kantian "Categories," which were neither innate or universal, Plato saw psyche in terms of "needs" (appetite, reason, desire). SD Experiments prove our basic needs are fresh air, food and drink, warmth and sensory input. Thirst makes man a beast. Aristotle's claim that art imitated reality is undermined by New Criticism, which denies any concern of art representing reality. Allegories are "Thought Experiments." "World Systems" and fantasy are allegories. If our reality is dependent upon our consciousness, then we are all solipsists. A "Memoir" by his grandmother would be New History. Only through allegory (extended analogy) can we prove Other Minds exist. Gill argues in favor of Memoirs of Solipsists, Fragmentarianism over Totalitarianism, and Pluralism over New Criticism.

"Educational"- a good book........2001-01-10
I thought this showed a different view than what the average person would look at. If you are looking for a book that makes you think then this is it. It will challeng the way you look at sports forever.
Book Description
The series ran not only nine years on radio, but also 20 years on television, making it the all-time longest running prime-time program with continuing characters. It introduced to the American people a cast of characters that quickly took on mythic proportions.
This book discovers what made Gunsmoke unique and why it was so popular. Especially insightful are 74 in-depth interviews and reminiscences by principal performers (Arness, Blake, Weaver, et al.), guest stars (Hartley, O'Connor, Leachman, Reynolds, Conrad, et al.), directors, writers and producers associated with the radio and television programs. A 128-page glossy section contains 241 photographs.
A comprehensive episode-by-episode guide provides reference to over 1,000 radio and television programs, spanning 23 years and includes title, synopsis, air date, cast, director, writer, producer and anecdotal information. Appendices: memorable quotes from the program, TV schedules and awards. Enormous index.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous reference.......2007-09-08
Even if my dog ate the cover off of the book (he only eats books that I love), this is a great reference for the true Gunsmoke fan. Too many folks don't realize that the first 11 years were the best, and they need some reference to those. This is a great history of all of Gunsmoke, not just the TVLAND "scrubbed" version.
Gunsmoke: A Complete History.......2007-03-24
This book is AWESOME. It is filled with the history of Gunsmoke from the radio days through the TWENTY YEARS it was on TV. Also a very interesting history of Dodge City, Kansas.
it rocks.......2006-07-03
I am a huge gunsmoke fan, since it first was shown in 1955. i thought it was interesting on how they auditioned and chose the main charcters, I enjoyed this more than the 50th year, due to the fact that Miss Kitty, was alive and others that were guest star were also. It was not a boring book and the layout was very good. They also had an interview of Roger Ewing (Thad) Which was informative. I highly recommned paying the price for it to all Gunsmoke fans. )
Worthwhile Reading!.......2006-02-26
This was a very good, very well written and very informative book to buy and read.
Janet Nazer
A Valuable Reference for Gunsmoke Fans.......2006-01-03
I never thought I'd ever pay $85 for a book, but this book is worth every penny to anyone who is interested in the Gunsmoke radio and TV show characters and stories. The 836 page book is divided into sections about Gunsmoke history, photos of the cast and supporting crew, episode descriptions, and several appendices. The TV series ran from 1955 to 1975. Reruns are still shown on TVland.
The history tells why they didn't use the radio actors for the TV series and how James Arness was selected to play Matt Dillion. I was surprised to learn that Denver Pyle was a strong candidate for the job.
Among the 126 pictures are Milburn Stone (Doc) when was the bad guy in over 100 B Westerns, Sam the bartender when he played in monster and cowboy movies, photos of guest stars like Charles Bronson, Mariette Hartley, Alex Cord, Loretta Swit, Robert Lansing, Michael Learned, Anne Francis, Ed Asner, George Kennedy, Cloris Leachman, Harry Carey Jr., Katharine Ross, Forrest Tucker, Warren Oates, John Saxon, Bruce Durn, Bette Davis, Gilbert Roland, Lee J. Cobb, Andy Devine, Ralph Bellamy, Jack Elam, Pat Hingle, Gary Busey, Rory Calhoun, and many others. Appendix G lists 14 pages of actors who were on Gunsmoke TV. Appendix A lists 8 pages of famous quotes from Gunsmoke characters. The Gunsmoke history includes 41 pages of interesting reflections by Gunsmoke guest stars and crew.
The TV episode descriptions list the title, date, rerun date, production number, synopsis of plot, and cast members.
There is only a brief mention of a few women in Matt's life besides Kitty. I would have liked to see a brief mention of all the episodes when a woman tried to get herself involved with Matt.
The 44 page index is complete and well done.

Active Server Pages (ASP) is the standard way of doing server-side scripting under Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). ASP offers tight interaction with Microsoft database servers, and isn't as hard to learn as you might think. With a good book at your side--ASP Programming for the Absolute Beginner is one--you can expect to be doing simple ASP work within an hour, and elaborate projects within a few days of experimentation. Progress along the learning curve requires only an open mind and a bit of diligence, as well as some careful guidance from someone who knows both ASP and the requirements of its typical users.
As the title of this book implies, it's meant for someone who's just getting going with ASP, and who in fact has chosen ASP as their first programming language. For that reason, John Gosney doesn't just show how conditional statements are implemented in ASP; he also explains why you'd want a conditional statement in the first place. Readers also learn about related subjects, such as HTML form syntax. Not all the information is elementary: there are full tutorials on connecting to Active Data Objects (ADO) databases and formulating SQL queries. The approach seems to work nicely, on the logic that assuming too little is better than assuming too much. Most programmers will be able to learn all they need to know for most ASP projects from this book. --David Wall
Topics covered: All about Active Server Pages (ASP), from square one (installing IIS 5) to the intermediate level (connecting to databases, executing queries, and presenting nicely formatted results). With several example games, the author illustrates ASP syntax, control structures, interaction with HTML forms, and connectivity to back-end databases.
Book Description
If you are new to programming, want to learn, and want to have fun while you're at it, then this is the book for you. Teaching the major principles of programming in ASP with game programming examples, this user-friendly book is a truly unique learning tool. As you learn to program simple games with ASP, you will acquire the programming skills that you need for more serious applications and will learn how these skills can be put to use in real world scenarios.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction and need some improvement..........2004-01-26
I found this books is very helpful of the programmer who want to learn ASP from the beginner. However you need to know some concept from visual basic, html and some operation task in windows environment. The author explain very clearly and easy to understand. Anyway I found three point that should be change based on my experinece along with this books: 1) If you are install PWS from the windows 98se CD-ROM, it won't work. You need to find this solution from the following hyperlink to the install it successfully: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q246081 the books didn't cover this problem. For windows 2000 it is fine. 2) The code published in the books is too small it made me very difficult to read. 3) The most of the example of the source code is based on the game. The sample code should be focus on the read example that the technology apply for such as the real task that we might face when we get a project on web development. Base on that 3 disadvantage is the reson that I give only 4 start. If there is a future release of this book, I hope this 3 point would be change.
Learn ASP --- THE HARD WAY.......2002-05-20
Learn ASP -- the hard way: by acting as editor for premier press.
I bought this book because I am tired of the dummies/idiots/morons series' condescension, and found some solace in this book. However, the code is contradictory. The same line of code could be reprinted on three different pages and have three minor differences. Even the source included on the cd-rom is different than the book. To the "absolute beginner" these differences seem insignificant until you try to run the code and get only errors. I am learning ASP, but because I have to debug somebody else's code.
There are two great lessons from this book: 1) minor differences in code are crucial, 2) find a book that knows that.
Unfocussed.......2002-02-07
I reviewed this as a possible student textbook because of the examples. However the examples are insufficiently explained, and the games ! Gross !! The books structure is unclear, hopping around with other web-technologies. I would have preferred a clear ASP focus with programming examples in VBScript and in JavaScript. The book by Dr R. Mellor is clearly superior for this market segment.
Excellent if you have no programming background whatsoever!.......2001-12-29
I'm taking a course and we were given the book SAMS "Teach Yourself E-Commerce Programming with ASP". Though I think that will be an excellent reference, I felt it made assumptions that I had some basic programming knowledge beforehand. I was struggling and kind'a lost. I went thorough every book on ASP on the bookstore shelf and I selected this one to help me out. I was looking for "Active Server Page Programming for Dummies, Second Edition". That book was out of stock and I selected Mr. Gosney's book. It's very clear with good exercises. It explains installing both IIS and Personal Web Server. It relates ASP with other apps like Front Page 2000. So far it the best, introductory book that I've found. One can pretty much learn without any additional instructional help.
