Book Description
Despite the enduring rhetorical use of the lessons of history by British politicians to justify present-day policies, the extent to which history has been used as an actual policy input remains a neglected topic. Focusing upon the 1957 Whitehall policy initiative encouraging greater use of history in the policymaking process, this book studies in depth the Treasury and the Foreign Office, the departments making the most positive responses. The findings, enhancing our knowledge of post-1945 Britain, illuminate debates about the nature and use of history in the contemporary world, most notably the relationship between history and policy.

The Treasury is at the centre of management in British central government. It is essential to the economy of the UK and it is still, in many respects, the central department in Whitehall. Richard A. Chapman both clarifies and consolidates existing knowledge about the development of the Treasury's role in public policy making and makes an original contribution to knowledge about the current work of the Treasury. The Contributions Agency and the Royal Mint The Structure and organisation of the Treasury was radically changed in 1995 following a new statement of its aim, mission and objectives. Book Description
This important book suggests a strategy to overcome problems in the delivery of essential services in developing countries – “micro-privatization.” The quality, efficiency and outreach of the services are considerably improved and the costs significantly reduced. Malcolm Harper presents 24 real life case studies from Asia, Africa and Latin America, and also from the USA and Europe, which amply demonstrate that micro-privatization is practical anywhere. The analysis accompanying the case studies identifies the problems encountered and the solutions adopted. Providing a fresh and comparative perspective on alternative strategies to improve the delivery of all types of public services, this book will attract a wide readership among NGO’s and international development agencies and those in the fields of rural development, urban management, public administration, community development and enterprise management.
Book Description
Thomas Craughwell has spent a large portion of his life in the thrall of folklore and apocrypha. Taking a natural step from his urban legend expertise, he examines the "common wisdom" that moms everywhere pass along as truth to see if it is valid or if it should be ignored. Citing legitimate studies and scientific research, Craughwell identifies the useful and helpful, and offers enlightening theories on why these myths emerged in the first place–and where they went right or wrong. In many cases, you'll find the old wives were right on the money, even if their reasoning was half-baked.
Whimsically illustrated throughout, this entertaining and educational guide allows you to make informed decisions, whether it is slurping chicken soup to help a cold (it works), waiting for an hour after eating before swimming (not necessary), believing that a dog's tongue is cleaner than a human's (not true, yuck), or walking under a ladder (dangerous).
Mom always said...
1. Big feet—big "down below."
2. A woman carrying her baby high will have a girl.
3. Chicken soup helps you get over a cold.
Craughwell's verdict...
1. False. Guys with double-digit shoe sizes should stop bragging.
2. False. Knit a pair of blue booties, too, just in case....
3. True. Jewish grandmothers were right all along.

Proving We've Been Lied to All These Years.......2006-03-31
This is an excellent little reference book on high quality paper, excellently laid out that proves a substantial number of old wives tales are pure fiction. It also verifies a significantly smaller number although you would obviously have worked most of these true ones out as they are just common sense such as It's Unhealthy to Hold Back a Sneeze and Listening to Loud Music Causes Deafness.
Again a lot of the wives tales proven to be false and this you would have already worked out through common sense but there are a few proven false that are surprising such as Reading in Dim Light Will Dim Your Eyes, Wet Hair Will Increase Your Chance of a Catching a Cold. As again is the case with tales proven true such as baby snakes are more poisonous than adults.
This book is also good for proving to those, and everyone comes across these people, work colleagues, friends or relatives who insist something is fact which common sense says is not true. With this book you can prove as the book proves through its own evidence that the ridiculous old wives tale is not true, such as Water Goes Down the Drain in Difference Directions Depending on Which Hemisphere Your In (probably because Lisa on the Simpsons said it was so, so therefore to them it has to be) and Swimmers Should Wait an Hour After Eating Before Going Into the Water.
Old Wives Tales is an excellent little book to have on hand to educate yourself and others.
Book Description
The Memoirs of Hector Berlioz has long been considered to be among the best of musical autobiographies.
Like his massive compositions, Berlioz (1803-69) was colorful, eloquent, larger than life. His book is both an account of his important place in the rise of the Romantic movement and a personal testament. He tells the story of his liaison with Harriet Smithson, and his even more passionate affairs of the mind with Shakespeare, Scott, and Byron. Familiar with all the great figures of the age, Berlioz paints brilliant portraits of Liszt, Wagner, Balzac, Weber, and Rossini, among others. And through Berlioz's intimate and detailed self-revelation, there emerges a profoundly sympathetic and attractive man, driven, finally, by his overwhelming creative urges to a position of lonely eminence.
For this new Everyman's edition of
The Memoirs, the translator--the composer's most admired biographer--has completely revised the text and the extensive notes to take into account the latest research.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2005-12-10
This is a rare, surprisingly lucid, firsthand account of the life of one of the most influential and innovative composers in history. Descriptions of contemporaries, the artist's balance of art/business, and the intimate history of specific works (Fantastique, Harold, Faust, Les Troyens, etc) are valuable to those interested in classical music and period history.
Why Not Go Directly To The Source?.......2002-05-05
The inimitable Hector Berlioz was a prolific writer (perhaps he missed his true calling). His memoirs are an irresistible and captivating read, giving us an all too brief window into his life-long struggles, both personally and professionally. Cairns did a bang-up job at translation (no real complaints here) and the Everyman's edition is splendidly printed.
The Importance Of Being Hector: First Thoughts........2002-05-03
Anyone familiar with the works of Oscar Wilde will of course know where the "take-off" above comes from. And how trenchantly - even scathingly - funny that particular work is, even to the point where some folks have fun citing extended passages at will, out loud, just for the "yuks" it contains. Well, add "The Memoirs of Hector Berlioz" to that short list.
I am now barely 100 pages into this screamer, after having recently concluded reading the magisterial and sympathetic two-volume biography of Berlioz by David Cairns (who also provides the perfect translation of these Memoirs). Frankly, I wasn't sure that I could handle "yet more Berlioz" so soon after finishing the Cairns volumes (although Cairns provided plenty of justification, in terms of his ability to pinpoint Berlioz's scathing wit).
I shouldn't have worried.
Berlioz is certainly famous among music lovers, and musicians and composers, for a long list of "firsts": The first to take the proto-Romantic beginnings started so auspiciously by Beethoven to new heights, the first to expand the size (and instruments) of the classical orchestra to something closely resembling today's symphony orchestra, the first to write a detailed study on the uses of the instruments in the orchestra, including the effects of venue acoustics on the orchestra's sound... It's a long list, and this is just a part of it.
But Berlioz was also a brilliant writer. Inter alia, his "feuilletons" (music & arts criticism for the cultural journals of his time) and his "Evenings in the Orchestra" (including several of his better feuilletons) showed both his brilliance as a writer on the arts and his scathing wit. And that wit comes across as well in his Memoirs, as can be evidenced by this example on his very first page:
"Needless to say, I was brought up in the Catholic and Apostolic Church of Rome. This charming religion (so attractive since it gave up burning people) was for seven whole years the joy of my life, and although we have long since fallen out I have always kept most tender memories of it. Indeed, such is its appeal for me that had I the misfortune to be born into the bosom of one of those schisms ponderously hatched by Luther or Calvin I should undoubtedly abjured it the moment I was able..."
It gets even better later on, and the Memoirs are very well served by Cairns's idiomatic translation that so perfectly captures the trenchantly ascerbic writing qualities of which Berlioz was so capable. (Apparently, earlier translations, whether due to "bowdlerization" or simple lack of supporting documents, did not succeed to the same degree in capturing all of these qualities.)
Berlioz started these Memoirs while in his mid-40's and while in London for performances of his works and finding himself with some spare time. From then until the end of his life two decades later, he would add to them, with the express requirement that they be published posthumously. There is no need to "wonder why" at this requirement: He had something to say about nearly everything and everybody in the world of music and culture of his time, and wasn't afraid to "name names." And good for him!
I hope to have more (but not too much more) to say about these alternately hilarious and moving Memoirs once I've finished them. In the meantime, I hope that these brief comments serve to whet your appetite for one of the best books ever written about music by a musician. And a suitably famous one at that. This hardcover version is inexpensive and beautifully bound; a worthwhile addition to every music lover's library.
Bob Zeidler
Excellent - but not the best translation.......1999-10-09
The other reviews pretty much sum up the qualities of Berlioz's writing. Like others, I find is prose more inviting than his music. Immensely candid, entertaining and wonderfully written, it would be a great shame if only musicians were to read it - it's enjoyable on so many levels. The only reason I decided to write this was to urge anyone thinking of buying it to get hold of David Cairns' more modern translation. It reads far more fluently and somehow seems to get inside Berlioz's character in a way that the older translation doesn't. It also has among the appendices a valuable dissection of the contentious points and parts where Berlioz was economical with the truth.
Musician & Story Teller, Berlioz surprises and delights.......1999-02-15
Is this guy for real?! Hector Berlioz seems too amazing to be true: I knew he was a superb music composer but I applaud him even more as an enchanting story teller. I should have guessed that the man who came up with the Symphonie Fantastique (a symphony with a story plot) could recount the extraordinary events of his life with such vivacity and good timing. And he did have some extraordinary events in his life. Exuberant, tortured, starving, successful, in love, angered, whatever the state of Berlioz's life, he lived it fully. At times soap opera-esque (I almost fell over reading about how he plotted to dress up as a maid and kill his faithless fiance), this book was a true joy to read. Thanks, Berlioz!

A Must for Berlioz Fans.......2007-02-03
Berlioz fans probably know that the composer was also a music reviewer and that he wrote famous memoirs. But readers may be surprized to find how well he was able to depict even some small moments from his life. He is very focused on his feelings and is a master of conveying them. A true romantic. Read the chapter about the re-burial of his first wife and be amazed. Reality is often more fascinating than fiction!

Book Description
This volume discusses changes in views and attitudes about the work of teachers and how these sociological views and attitudes have asserted themselves in the last decade. The book is organized in three sections. The first lays a theoretical framework by addressing the notion of class and how it affects views of teachers' work. The second section puts the first section's theory into practice through an illustrative analysis of teachers' lives in America and in England. The final section focuses on the changes that have affected teachers' work in the 1990's and world over.

Book Description
Adored around the world by an extroadinary spread of Generations, from early Monty Python fans to teenagers for whom Fawlty Towersis a cult and who, amazingly, know all the Python catchphrases, John Cleese is the Quintessential English eccentric. Many of his fans see him as the finest comedy writer Britain has ever produced. Others are fascinated by his ventures into pyschotherapy and psychoanalysis, even his dalliance in politics. Cleese encounters is the 1st biography of our most enigmatic star, the awkwardly tall boy from Weston-Super-Mare who nearly became a solicitor, until he discovered Cambridge and the footlights. More than this, it is funny, sympathetic and wide ranging story about one of the Greatest escapes in history.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad considering there was no help from the subject :-).......2004-07-29
This book is in no way the definitive Cleese study, but it does give good background and some insight into Cleese and the characters he developed onscreen. Sometimes those on the periphery of the subject can give good insight because they are, for the most part, unbiased. Pick it up if you have the chance, and see if you can find the characters of Cleese's childhood in his comedy.
Outstanding!.......2000-03-31
Packed with brilliantly researched information, beautifully written, deeply insightful, modest and very British, just like its subject. To be fair, there haven't been many negative reviews of this excellent book, but the few I have seen have, I suspect, come from the more earnest kind of Americans who believe they understand Monty Python, but never have and sadly never will. Only too bad this book is out of print in the USA, but we in Britain can buy the updated paperback on Amazon.co.uk Recommended!
The Worst Book on Pythoniana Ever. Period........1999-12-27
This is the lousiest book you will ever read about John Cleese or any of the Pythons, period.
I tried to give it zero stars, but the system wouldn't let me.
I understand that when Margolis announced he was doing a Cleese bio, Cleese asked his friends not to help Margolis in any way.
It shows. Margolis replaces insight and nuance with trivia and stupid research tricks. He digs up ancient, brief acquaintances of Cleese's and interviews them (like the girl who was an on-site nurse at one of his film sets, stuff like that).
But most of the book is cobbled together from newspaper and magazine articles, glued together with gobs of suspect, sometimes lurid speculation on the part of the author about Cleese's inner life and psychological motivations.
Oh, and did I mention that Margolis is a writer as smug as he is untalented?
Being an incurable Python fan, I could not resist buying this as a remaindered softback, despite being warned by Friends Who Knew Better.
I still felt as mightily snookered as I would have had I paid full retail hardback.
Run away! Run away!
A must for Python/Fawlty fans,get inside the real Cleese.......1999-02-19
John Cleese is arguably the greatest comedian of the 60's to 90's. Best known as a founder of "Monty Python" & "Fawlty Towers",this biography makes fascinating reading and provides many insights into his comic genius. A must for Cleese fans and/or lovers of British comedy.

Absolutely Fabulous!.......2005-10-08
I've reviewed various books for learning Macromedia Flash MX 2004. This is the best. Along with this is "Sams Teach Yourself Macromedia Flash MX 2004". They are both wonderful and each have their own purpose. I started with Sams Teach Yourself Macromedia Flash MX 2004 in 24 Hours and use "...At Your Fingertips..." for an excellent reference guide. I recommend both books.
FLASH MX 2004: At Your Fingertips; Get in, Get Out, Get ..........2004-05-19
Review: FLASH MX 2004: At Your Fingertips; Get in, Get Out, Get Exactly What You Need
The title of this book: FLASH MX 2004 At Your Fingertips; Get in, Get Out, Get Exactly What You Need, really says it all! The book is so well organized and tabbed that the information is truly "at your finger tips". The reader can get in, find exactly what is needed and get out quickly and easily. The problem is that you can never do that with this book! You get in, and in, and in... it's a veritable black hole that sucks you into its instructional depths and keeps you there forever. When your fingers go numb and the book accidentally closes, you realize it's the next day and your brain is about to explode with new and exciting things to try with the program. Well, that may not happen to everyone, but for computer geeks like me, watch yourself! Beginners don't be afraid, you too can be victims! This book is written for every level of user and for both PCs and MACs. The graphics and text couldn't be a better combination unless some how Sham and Jen could transport themselves into your living room to accompany their words and pictures. As applications manuals go, this one's a "keeper"- it keeps you.
FLASH MX 2004: At Your Fingertips; Get in, Get Out, Get Exactly What You Need is composed of five sections and a special inset section all about color (which is actually in color!); 1) Flash Workspace, 2) Authoring Tasks, 3) Scripting Tasks, 4) Testing and Publishing Tasks, and 5) What's New. The color section is all about panels, pickers, spaces and video color. Included with this section is a gallery that shows some really interesting examples that will challenge your understanding of design and development (deselopment - a new word for me).
A nice thing about the interface overview section is the contents outline that delineates Windows versus MAC. Right up front you have the information you need as a specific platform user. Being a MAC user, I knew right off which sections I could skip and didn't have to "double read" any of the sections pertaining to Windows users.
Quick tips and cross-references are listed in the outside page margins that give you chapter and section references for more information, alternatives and related activities. Both Windows and MAC keyboard short cuts are listed in the margins as well, saving an incredible amount of time in finding the short cut keystroke as well as referencing the short cuts at a later time.
FLASH MX 2004: At Your Fingertips; Get in, Get Out, Get Exactly What You Need is crammed full of screen shots and examples that help the reader understand what is being explained. An unusual, but extremely helpful addition to this book is the little black labels that match the text. These quickly draw the reader's eye to the area of the screen shot or graphic being discussed. There is no confusion and no guessing about what is being demonstrated or shown, or where to find the corresponding item.
I found the scripting section to be extremely helpful. While I am still not crazy about writing script, I did like the authors' explanation of scripted animation versus timeline animation and creating timeline flow with scripts. While all of the scripting components are discussed at length (button, checkbox, combobox, list, loader, numericstepper, progressbar, etc), the authors don't forget to add explanations of basic things like spell checking and creating a custom mouse pointer for the beginning user.
For those who are veteran Flash users, the new v2 components (some of which are listed above) make life in the fast developer lane just a little more efficient. FLASH MX 2004: At Your Fingertips; Get in, Get Out, Get Exactly What You Need now has enhanced import options for Adobe PDF and Illustrator files as well as enhanced supports for MP3 meta tags and runtime loading. The de-bugging panel works like a charm and can be manually changed during an SWF run session. The "What's New" Appendix provides a great chart of enhancements and where to find the corresponding information. No long dialogs about new improvements to wade through - just a simple, easy to read chart and a reference to find out more... if you want.
All in all this is a great reference book for FLASH MX 2004. Although the title says "Get In, Get Out, Get Exactly What You Need" - be forewarned. You may get in but getting out is a bit harder! And you will get much more than you need.
Great Reference Book!.......2004-04-16
I absolutely LOVE the new layout in this book. Instead of having to go through pages and pages of explanation to find one specific topic, this Fingertips book is divided into specific topics, with very specific information related to what you are looking for. Using the table of contents, you can easily find what page the tip is on, go to that page, and get the specific you need for that topic. Most tips are on one or two pages. I hope this 'fingertip' idea is used in other application books! Thanks for providing this great reference book!
