Book Description
This volume brings together Cohen's principle articles on the sociology of tourism, published over the last three decades.
Part one Collects his major theoretical papers, starting with the pioneering articles of the 1970's, which contributed to the opening of the field of tourism for social science research, up to the recent work on the ongoing process of change in contemporary tourism. Part two features the author's work on the many-sided interfaces between tourism and other domains - such as religion, crime and language. Part three includes several case studies, representative of diverse aspects of the author's empirical research.
The introduction places the author's work in the context of the development of the field, while the concluding chapter outlines the challenges that future developments in tourism will pose to its study.

Book Description
Foreign capital flows are believed to be influenced by economic indicators like market size and export intensity, irrespective of the source and the destination countries. This book takes an alternate approach based on the concepts of neighbourhood and extended neighbourhood. Focussing on China, India and the Caribbean, it analyzes foreign capital inflows from the perspective of both the source and destination countries. It delves deep into the determinants of foreign capital, proposing the neighbourhood model to explain the flow of foreign capital and exploring the direct and spillover effects of foreign capital on the destination countries' economy.

Book Description
Planet Simpson is the first book to bring in-depth analysis to that most important pop-cultural institution of the last decade-Fox TV's "The Simpsons"-and use the show as a microcosm of the Western culture it has hilariously (and mercilessly) reflected and influenced. In an age of unprecedented transformation, "The Simpsons" alone has had the depth, intelligence, scope, and, most importantly, humor to chart the links between popular culture and the world we live in. Planet Simpson is broken down into scathingly funny chapters analyzing each major character's relationship to different facets of the American character: Homer Simpson, the ultimate everyman of the American century; Lisa Simpson, the voice of the show's social conscience; Bart Simpson, punk icon; Marge Simpson, maternal voice of moral authority and anchor of Simpsons family values; C. Montgomery Burns, unchecked capitalism personified...and every bit character on down from Barney to Smithers to Krusty the Clown, coupled with intelligent, friendly, and entertaining analysis of the show's greater themes. Going well beyond a critical discussion of a single television program, Planet Simpson will use "The Simpsons" as a window on the culture at large to deliver first-hand reportage of the Internet boom, the alternative-rock explosion, the triumph of irony, the cultural origins of anti-globalization, and other defining events and trends of our accelerated, confounding era.

Hurrah! Intelligent life on TV .......2007-04-16
If you like the Simpsons and appreciate it's humanistic, smart, hip, culturally knowledgable view of the world, then you'll love this book. If you are a disgruntled liberal-hating conservative with no sense of irony and the attention-span of a goldfish, then stay away - you'll hate it and will probably only give it one star.
A witty intelligent look at the culture and a must-read for hardcore fans.
Excellent book.......2007-01-17
This is one of my favorite books that I have purchased. The author does an excellent job of comparing either an episode or a character to the subject that he is comparing it to. He adds quotes from the show in his writing that helps one to enjoy reading this book. If you are a fan of the show I am sure that you'll enjoy this book.
Essay on Gen X, WTO, and other flashbacks from the 90's.......2006-11-14
Turner's book relates a collection of his opinions and personal anecdotes regarding 90's culture/counterculture, and the pivotal role (he argues) the Simpsons played in all of this. While the premise was thought-provoking enough to keep me reading out of curiosity, the book falls short in several ways.
First, you probably won't learn much new about The Simpsons!
Secondly, this book is long and dense; Turner's writing style is not just erudite, but overly sophisticated in a way you'd expect to see from a college student who is really, really, trying to earn that A++ grade. His style often slides back and forth from "academic" to "hipster". You find yourself marveling at his vocabularly... That is, until the umpteenth reference to "American hegemony"... Which brings us to the second problem...
Political bias intrudes all too often. While I'm not at all offended by his taking a liberal perspective on the Simpsons, Turner's unrelenting focus on The Simpsons' supposed fight against "American hegemony" gets old and starts to look downright immature. More importantly, he seems to miss the point -- The Simpsons satire *everybody*, right? The Simpsons writers have always skewered aging hippies and disaffected youth (liberal targets) right along with the "easy" targets such as corporate stooges and lazy Americans.
Turner's impassioned analysis often gets derailed by his own inability to take a break from his own pet concepts. Pages that may have been devoted to something like what The Simpsons says about childhood in America (much could be mined from the whole world of Ralphie, Nelson, Milhouse and others), are instead given to rambling tangents about 90's zeitgeist and such things as the raves and concerts the author attended. In this way (as other reviewers have said here) the book is too often about *Chris Turner*, and not often enough about *The Simpsons*.
Some parts are actually very funny... But it should be noted that these funny parts tend to be in the footnotes, which re-tell in detail various antics from Simpsons episodes that perhaps you haven't seen for awhile... As other reviewers have rightly pointed out, you may as well just put your money toward the DVDs and enjoy it firsthand!
This hefty book is clearly a labor of love. Overall, it's a mildly interesting, sometimes amusing, and often annoying essay. While it's *long* enough to be a good academic treatise on The Simpsons and Society, a disappointing number of pages are consumed by the author's birdwalking socio-political rants and stories.
Pop Culture and The Simpsons - Great Book with Semi-Serious Undertones.......2006-07-26
Perfect book that reflects on the seemingly symbiotic relationship between pop culture and The Simpsons. The author reviews the various characters and situations from the show which reflect the issues of the day in many surprising ways. It gives a view on The Simpsons that most basic viewers never notice. The Simpsons is a lot deeper than you'd imagine and more intricate than only one viewing can show you. Adn in turn, as 'The Simpsons' were a reflection of society, society is increasingly a partial reflection of 'The Simpsons'. Within the pages of this book you can really see how much 'The Simpsons' is a perfect , albeit odd, view of today's realities. The book shows how 'The Simpsons' is a smart show that's funny for everyone from dumb to Einstein. (And based on that bit of horrible English, I'm moving towards the former)Definitely a great pick for a serious Simpsons Fan.
Now if they would just hurry and make that movie they've always talked about...
I liked it, just not all of it........2006-07-13
This isn't a bad book in a sociological sense, just one sided. This Turner guy is a liberal. I actually agreed with about 80% of the authors political positions, and he reminds me why that is the case. He talks with more understanding and education than a typical conservative.
As a book for the sake of entertainment, don't count on it. I'll watch the Simpsons instead of reading about them for entertainment.
I did learn a lot about the show, although all of it would have been available elsewhere. This book, though, is primarily sociological discourse, and it's openly left-wing, so right-wingers will hate it. I'm suprised that it ever got published, and I won't blame anyone for not taking seriously the opinions of a Canadian fanboy. He certainly thinks he knows whats been happening in the minds of the best TV writers on Earth, which happens to coincide perfectly with his views. In that way, he tries to hard, making spurious connections between the writers and sociological situations. It isn't unreasonable, just not totally convincing.
Turner's opinions on big business, family, the War on Drugs and globalization take up as much room in the book as Simpsons trivia. If you're ok with that, read the book. The show DOES have an political and social opinion that's fairly well understood and defended in this book. If you're not into that, just buy the Simpsons on DVD and laugh, like the rest of us.
Product Description
This book was written to provide a methodology for improvisation on the piano. Patterns are analyzed in and notated in all keys. Examples are given to illustrate how and where a fill fits. Then, step by step you can learn how to add the left hand accompaniment based on a lead sheet, or improvise with the right hand. While improvising, patterns may be woven into a beautiful tapestry of sound. Just as a kaleidoscope creates beautiful colorful patterns before your eye, the patterns in this book will enable you to create a kaleidoscope of musical sounds for your ears. Most of the book consists of short examples using familiar tunes.

Not Too Useful.......2007-02-13
I was looking for a book that had some practical info on how to improvise and was disappointed with what I got. The book you're getting is actually 1/12 of the real size, because the author transcribes any example of a "fill" in all 12 keys. For example, she'll give an interval (let's say C to E) and then she'll give a fill for it (such as C-B-C-D-E) and then she'll give that example in all 12 keys. Oh, and as for chord progressions, the grand finale of the book is the I-ii-V chord progression, written out in all keys. If you're looking to spice up your hymns, maybe this is the book for you, but otherwise, you'd be better off looking elsewhere.
Mel Bay's Complete Book of Improvisation, Fills and Chord Progressions by Gail Smith.......2007-02-13
The book explains things very well and gives many examples. It is very easy to follow and then impliment the technique into other songs. It doesn't just give you a few songs to change but the application that can be made to any song and without diffculty. I love this book and it has helped me improve already.
Fills - Expecting too much.......2006-08-26
I wanted to learn how to place fills in the melody by using the cords and/or the notes in the previous bar. Well, Gail expected you to have "Super Fingers". Using eighth notes after eighth notes after eighth notes was too much for me. This is the first book I have ever returned to Amazon.
Book Description
Bombshell spies, slayers, witches and assassins: kick-ass female stars have taken over blockbuster movies like
Charlie's Angels and
Kill Bill as well as prime time TV hits such as
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and
Charmed. These characters kill as quickly as they break down in tears, and beat guys up as easily as they toss them into bed. With very few exceptions, they're young, white, beautiful, straight and skinny. How are young women to respond to these images of women who fight (or bite) back? As the product of corporate media, are these icons of ‘female power’ merely cons?
This one-of-a-kind anthology of new fiction, essays, and comics recognizes the seductiveness as well as the limitations of such contemporary pop culture heroines. Contributors — including Nalo Hopkinson, Larissa Lai, Shary Boyle, Nikki Stafford, Mariko Tamaki, Sonja Ahlers and Sherwin Tjia — critique constructs of female power and invent alternative role models.

Girls Who Opt to Kick Ass Instead of Wiggle It.......2004-07-19
I challenge you to list, in rank order, your favorite ass-kicking males in pop culture. You can select from actors in film and television, people in sports and characters in book and comic books. It's not that hard right?
Okay, so I have another challenge for you. Do the same thing, only this time list only females.
Still thinking?
Still?
Can you even come up with ten? Don't feel bad if you can't. Feel pissed off. Feel short-changed. Ask one question: Why?
It's only been in the fairly recent past that women have started to make an appearance in pop-culture in such a way so as to present examples of strength, combined with wit and, on occasion, super powers. Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Mutants, Slayers and Freaks, edited by Emily Pohl-Weary, is a collection of essays, both prose and drawings, all dedicated to girls who choose to fight back. There are some essays focusing on the more obvious characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (giving Willow due props as well) and Xena: Warrior Princess. More interesting are the historical entries that explain how these kick ass women came to be and the characters that preceded them. Several pieces are fictional and create brand new fighting women, or give readers instructions on how to become one themselves.
Some readers of Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Mutants, Slayers and Freaks will be overwhelmed by the science fiction, the comic book references and the overwhelming amount of attention given to Buffy, but fear not, the book offers some for all. And the section not of your element are written in such a way that even those ignorant of vampire slayers will be able to confidently read about Buffy and maybe even check out her show. You may not run out to buy your first comic, but you will feel new wonder towards Wonder Woman and some general irritation at the metamorphosis she has made in her lifetime from plain old Super Hero to sex-icon Super Hero.
In a total of 36 entries, women are given their due and readers are given an inspiration to either 1) support the few examples that currently exist in the media, 2) create new sheroes in the media and / or 3) become sheroes on their own to inspire women everywhere.
Worth a Bite..........2004-07-13
As always with a collection of writings, it's hard to decide where to stand on the collection as a whole. I daresay that Pohl-Weary did a damned fine job thematically and with the organization (there is a definite sense of, well, sense to the order in which the pieces are presented), but the quality of the works does vary quite a bit.
The highlight, for me, was "'Cuz the Black Chick Always Gets it First," by Candra K. Gill, a solid bit of work on the dynamics of race in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' - it's refreshing to find a fan who can deconstruct a show for its weaknesses, not just its strengths, and balancing both in the same entry was a nice touch.
The lowpoint, for me, was actually an artwork piece. Shary Boyle has a panel of five or six pages, which ran the gamut of a wonderful piece with a frumpy lady flying with birds, to a very angry looking woman with a baseball bat. But the piece that really threw me off was one where three young girls of various racial descent are holding a man pinned in a kneeling position - one little girl holding his hands behind his back, one with her foot on his groin, in a pose that speaks of pressure application, and one with a knife to the man's throat.
Now - I think there was an aim for role-reversal here - the typical (and factual in the majority of cases) white male pedophile. Reversed, this picture would be a disturbing violent piece about a pedophile, a predator, a sick tableau of violence. Instead, we have a sick tableau of violence where three little girls threaten a man's life, and we are left to assume the man has done something bad (since, for all that I can attempt to project here, it's not like one can point a finger at a row of men and say "Normal, normal, pedophile, normal...") Like I said, I think it aimed for role-reversal; it missed.
All in all, however, this was a solid bit of editing - prose and nonfiction both, some graphic novels, some artwork (the rest of the pictures by Shary Boyle, I should note, I quite enjoyed), all of it of a decent enough calibre to be substantive in total.
Definitely worth a bite.

Brilliant.......2002-04-22
A brilliant examination of the contributing factors to, and results of the 1950s Quiz Show scandal.
Much ado about nothing.......1998-01-14
This book satisifies its intended goal; the author gets to brag on himself constantly. From the cover blurb that says "Watch Robert Redford's Quiz Show and then read this book for the true story" to the introduction where the author tells you just how great it was that he uncovered this injustice that was "woven into the fabric of American life", Stone shows exactly what can happen when government in general and one district attorney in specific, is allowed to run unchecked. By his own admission, nothing illegal was done through this "scandal". However, this book details how quiz shows were disemboweled because the government and Stone saw television as a big evil that needed to be taught a lesson. You can't read this book without developing a distrust for the powers that be.

Customer Reviews:
A Very Complete Reference.......2005-04-20
If you are a proficient ASP developer and are familiar with advanced C# progrmming topics like events and delegates, this book gives you a thorough knowledge about server controls. After looking into many ASP.NET books, this is the first book which doesn't waste the reader's time to describe non-related topics.
Just a joy to read, but this is not a "for dummies" book........2005-03-29
This is the de-facto "advanced" book on authoring ASP.NET server controls and components. I read a couple other "for dummies" books to get up to speed, but I still had quite a few unanswered, nagging questions. Well, this is the book to take your development of ASP.NET controls and components to the next level by removing the veil for some of the magic going on behind the scenes.
One of the worst technical books I've encountered.......2005-03-02
It may be a nice reference but in no way it is a good explanation of how to get things done! The authors wrote the book without thinking of what readers might want to see.
This is technical writing not a tutorial. I've read great tech books (like .NET Framework by Jeff Richter) where one doesn't have to read a paragraph twice. This book is not one of those.
It is also very difficult to trace how things are related to each other and where they come from.
Could you make the subject more difficult? No........2004-09-23
I have been a C++ (Visual / MFC/ WinAPI) developer for nigh on 10 years and I think this book is extremely confusing.
I've written my own navigation control in VB and wanted to learn more, in depth, about how to create controls and implement design-time behavior. This book just kills me.
I read the first 3 chapters with a question mark imprinted on my brain. In those first 3 chapters the authors explain (I guess you could call it explain) delegates, page programming model, and event-handling and none of it sinks in. I've read the chapters 2 times and still I'm staring at a question mark.
And, after 3 chapters I expect a sample relating to a control, but here I have nothing.
And I really like Jesse Liberty's books and I see his compliment above. I guess this book is for PURE GENIUSes. So if you're a PURE GENIUS, then you may like this book. Otherwise, keep on searching. Maybe chapter 4 will be better.
I can only hope the question marks go away.
Great book IF you already understand event programming.......2004-04-05
I came to this book with considerable experience in ASP, and with fair experience over the past year with ASP.NET, mainly in C#. I also have some experience with Java and object-oriented programming. I wanted to learn how to create custom web controls, and this is one of the few books on the subject. The authors are members of Microsoft's ASP.NET team, so they know the inside story, and technically, they show their knowledge of the topic.
However, the book basically assumes not only that you know C# thoroughly, but also that you understand the event model that is more along the lines of desktop applications. Chapter three hits you with an abstract discussion of component and event programming that is difficult if you're not already familiar with the topic, and the book never really looks back after that. I struggled through the first thirteen chapters before giving up, not feeling like I have a grasp of how I could build controls. At this point I'll either have to painstakingly go back through much of the book again, hoping to catch on, or else find another resource.
The other problem is that when introducing a topic, the text rarely gives a good explanation of why the topic is important; instead, it jumps into details of interfaces and methods. A good example is in chapter nine, when the book turns to processing postback data. Sure, it's important that the control be able to interact with the data in a form, but what does that mean for the control? An example of how this would work and be important would be key here, but instead, the authors open the section with:
"We'll now look at the postback data processing architecture that enables a control to retrieve form data submitted by a user, update its state, and raise events in response to changes in its state. To participate in postback data processing, a control must implement the IPostBackDataHandler interface and render elements whose HTML name attributes have unique values on the page" (p. 203). The discussion continues with the technical details of implementing the interface. By the time they get to the code sample, it's tough to see how the snippets of code added to the previous example helps handle postback data.
I expect that if you are an experienced C++ and C# applications programmer, you'll find the book a great help and reference. If you're fairly new to programming, or most of your experience is with Web applications, I would look elsewhere (perhaps the O'Reilly book by Lowy, though I haven't read that one so can't endorse it either). I realize that topics like event handling are more advanced, but there should be a book that can convey it understandably to the intermediate-level Web programmer.
