Book Description
In Taiwan, small-scale subcontracting factories of thirty employees or less make items for export, like the wooden jewelry boxes that Ping-Chun Hsiung made when she worked in six such factories. These factories are found in rice fields and urban areas, front yards and living rooms, mostly employing married women in line with the government slogan that promotes work in the home"Living Rooms as Factories."
Hsiung studies the experiences of the married women who work in this satellite system of factories, and how their work and family lives have contributed to Taiwan's 9.1 percent GNP growth over the last three decades, the "economic miracle." This vivid portrayal of the dual lives of these women as wives, mothers, daughters-in-law and as manufacturing workers also provides sophisticated analyses of the links between class and gender stratification, family dynamics, state policy, and global restructuring within the process of industrialization.
Hsiung uses ethnographic data to illustrate how, in this system of intersecting capitalist logic and patriarchal practices, some Taiwanese women experience upward mobility by marrying into the owners' family, while others remain home and wage workers. Although women in both groups acknowledge gender inequality, this commonality does not bridge divergent class affiliations. Along with a detailed account of the oppressive labor practices, this book reveals how workers employ clandestine tactics to defy the owners' claims on their labor.

Book Description
Show biz memoir at its name-dropping, bridge-burning, profane best: the music industry’s most outspoken, outrageous, and phenomenally successful executive delivers a rollicking memoir of pop music’s heyday.
During the 1970s and '80s the music business was dominated by a few major labels and artists such as Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand and James Taylor. They were all under contract to CBS Records, making it the most successful label of the era. And, as the company’s president, Walter Yetnikoff was the ruling monarch. He was also the most flamboyant, volatile and controversial personality to emerge from an industry and era defined by sex, drugs and debauchery.
Having risen from working-class Brooklyn and the legal department of CBS, Yetnikoff, who freely admitted to being tone deaf, was an unlikely label head. But he had an uncanny knack for fostering talent and intimidating rivals with his appalling behavior—usually fueled by an explosive combination of cocaine and alcohol. His tantrums, appetite for mind-altering substances and sexual exploits were legendary. In Japan to meet the Sony executives who acquired CBS during his tenure, Walter was assigned a minder who confined him to a hotel room. True to form, Walter raided the minibar, got blasted and, seeing no other means of escape, opened a hotel window and vented his rage by literally howling at the moon.
In Howling at the Moon, Yetnikoff traces his journey as he climbed the corporate mountain, danced on its summit and crashed and burned. We see how Walter became the father-confessor to Michael Jackson as the King of Pop reconstructed his face and agonized over his image while constructing Thriller (and how, after it won seven Grammies, Jackson made the preposterous demand that Walter take producer Quincy Jones’s name off the album); we see Walter, in maniacal pursuit of a contract, chase the Rolling Stones around the world and nearly come to blows with Mick Jagger in the process; we get the tale of how Walter and Marvin Gaye—fresh from the success of “Sexual Healing”—share the same woman, and of how Walter bonds with Bob Dylan because of their mutual Jewishness. At the same time we witness Yetnikoff’s clashes with Barry Diller, David Geffen, Tommy Mottola, Allen Grubman and a host of others. Seemingly, the more Yetnikoff feeds his cravings for power, sex, liquor and cocaine, the more profitable CBS becomes—from $485 million to well over $2 billion—until he finally succumbs, ironically, not to substances, but to a corporate coup. Reflecting on the sinister cycle that left his career in tatters and CBS flush with cash, Yetnikoff emerges with a hunger for redemption and a new reverence for his working-class Brooklyn roots.
Ruthlessly candid, uproariously hilarious and compulsively readable, Howling at the Moon is a blistering You’ll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again of the music industry.
Customer Reviews:
ENDEARING EXCESS.......2005-02-04
This is a review of the Audio CD which is read by Walter himself.
I was compelled to buy this because we so seldom hear from the people at the top - and Walter Yetnikoff was certainly at the top of his game. He was one of the most visible label chiefs in the world, and not an "executive" in a suit as he decries today's industry figures.
What makes this compelling listening is the words come to life as Walter recalls anecdotes with Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger. Unlike most other biographies, he doesn't bore you too much with details of his childhood - and gets right into what readers want to know - what really happened at CBS records during his reign? Was MJ as squeaky clean as he seemed? Walter doesn't disappoint and tells us as much as he can without I suppose, destroying anyone's career. The moments of irony, dry humor and introspect make this ascent and descent of a record mogul story worth buying. Walter was there - he saw, he conquered, he fell. He's lived a few lifetimes, and he makes no apologies for it - remaining a realistic, candid observer of his own life.
Walter Yetnikoff's amazing life story is one worth reading.......2004-06-30
Walter Yetnikoff's "Howling at the Moon" is a great read. The author is stone-cold honest about his history - morphing from a poor kid in Brooklyn to Columbia Law graduate to "Jimmy Olsen greenhorn" in the music business to master business builder to *the* out-of-control legendary wildman of the music business to abrupt sobriety to betrayal, fall, a period in the wilderness and redemption. What a tale.
Where else are you going to get insights on Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Marvin Gaye and Mick Jagger mixed with equally eye-opening passages on Tom Wyman, Norio Ohga, Akio Morita and Bill Paley?
The Paley passages are especially enlightening - the controlling, secretive builder of the Tiffany network and the wildman of CBS/Columbia records were as unlikely a pairing as you could imagine, but Paley appreciated Yetnikoff's undeniable ability to make money and, as Paley says upon taking his leave from CBS, "in this office, that did not go unnoticed."
Despite Yetnikoff's well-documented demons, his track record in the business is unassaible: when he left, CBS/Columbia was still pulling in $450 million a year in *net* profits. True, Yetnikoff's successors had to deal with a more vexing set of assaults on the recorded music business model, but you need to give the guy his due.
Borrrrrrrrrrrrring.......2004-05-13
The least interesting thing about this book is the author. Unfortunately, this is an autobiography. Considering CBS Records' remarkable talent roster during Yetnikoff's tenure, including the Stones, Springsteen, Dylan and Michael Jackson, he recounts only a few rather uninteresting anecdotes about Wacko Jacko, and virtually nothing about the others, instead taking gratuitous potshots at former close associates. Even if you enjoy books about bitter, washed up, egotisical, former drunken cokehead lawyers, this book will put you to sleep. I'm sure there's a very interesting story somewhere in Walter Yetnikoff's experience with CBS. It's not in this book.
Honesty and Self Appraisal.......2004-04-29
It is fitting that this book is not written in "perfect", smooth flowing format - because this is an accounting of a man who was swept up in excess and excitement without giving himself the time to truly "know himself", and thus his life did not unravel in "perfect" smooth flowing format. This is a great book because it relates what hundreds of thousands of people have experienced in the latter 21st century, only it does so in an exagerated and romantic way: an unrelenting climb and push to business success that moved so rapidly and excitedly that spiritual self-fulfillment was often remiss. This is an honest and direct chronicle of a very "hip" life. And now, at last, Yetnikoff is attempting to come to terms with himself, and - to his credit - with no lack of humour and a respectable but not overly synthetic underlying amount of remorse. You may not agree with his excesses and some of the decisions he has made in his life, but you have to admire the journey. The tidbits of info on the major music personalities emphasize the fact that no matter how famous (or infamous) people become - they share many of the same problems, needs, and desires we all have. Thanks, Walter - you produced a good, entertaining and honest read.
The Man Is Brilliant with a capital "B".......2004-04-01
For people who live in the central part of the country, Walter's lack of moral compass may put you off. Setting that aside, this guy has bravado. You can't help but want him on your team. He reminds me of a racier David Geffen. I stayed up VERY late reading it...so be prepared to play hooky the next day.

Exquisite Postmodern Critique of Celebrity-hood.......2001-12-24
This is an excellent, accessible collection of well-written essays on the intersection of sport, celebrity, and culture. In particular, the essays on "Gretzky Nation," "Global Hingis," and Michael Jordan were thought-provoking and did more than just glamourise the world of celebrity athletes. Highly recommended to anyone interested in seeing the cultural relavance of sporting figures in everyday global culture.
Brilliant!.......2001-11-16
Great book. Complete, and thought provoking. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "Global Hingis"!

Customer Reviews:
The glamour of television.......2007-04-20
Tom Tierney's "Glamorous Television Stars" is a lovely edition among his various books depicting stars and fashion. It runs the gamut from Loretta Young's swirling gowns from the '50s to Sarah Jessica Parker in cutting edge fashion from the more current "Sex & The City". There are some beautiful dolls and costumes in this book, including Dinah Shore, Tina Louise, Diahann Carroll, Joan Collins, Vanna White, Cher and Fran Drescher.
The only complaints I could have against this book are the dolls which don't really resemble the stars (the dolls of Susan Lucci and Farrah Fawcett don't look like the actual stars very much) and less than inspiring fashion choices. Linda Evans has a choice of two gowns of similar style from "Dynasty"; why not a Western outfit from "The Big Valley" as an alternate? Heather Locklear's dull outfit from the short-lived series "L.A.X." should have been cut in favor of one of the mini-skirted business suits Heather made famous on "Melrose Place". Likewise, Pamela Anderson wore some outrageous fashions on her syndicated action-adventure series "V.I.P."; why choose to depict a torn T-shirt and cut-off jean shorts from that series?
These are minor quibbles, however. On the whole, "Glamorous Television Stars" is an excellent volume of Tom Tierney's fine Hollywood fashion art and attention to detail.
