Book Description
This study examines how the shared cultural values of employees in a Polish firm influence management attempts top transform organizational practices in a newly privatized factory. By introducing a foreign management approach, Total Quality Management (TQM), the management of this factory presents a potential conflict of values between the employees and the management philosophy. Tracing the historical and contemporary impact of traditional, political and religious influences in Poland and utilizing ethnographic techniques of observation, interviews, and secondary source data, the author identifies four patterns of shared mindsets. These mindsets, insecurity and instability, distrust, reluctance to assume responsibility and a struggle between individualism and collectivism generate resistance to the successful implementation of TQM in this factory.
Organizational studies research has identified cultural differences in values but previous studies have not examined the congruence assessment that employeesmake when confronted with a management intervention, such as TQM. The author finds that an incongruence between societal values and the values the employees perceive are embedded in the TQM approach produced actual outcomes that are not consistent with TQM objectives of empowerment, teamwork, visionary leadership and continuous improvement of quality. Employees demonstrated a reduced sense of empowerment, team goals that are counterproductive to organizational goals, autocratic leadership and an increased focus but not sustainable effort toward improving quality.
The book examines the reasons for these results through detailed description and extensive quotations from employees both inside the Polish firm and throughout Polish society.
Book Description
Why Did Steve Allen Cross the Road?
Steve Allen is a legend among comedians and entertainers. He's been playing to audiences on stage, radio, film, and television for more than fifty years, gaining acclaim for his unique wit and energy. Now for the first time, he shares more than a thousand of his favorite one-liners, anecdotes, limericks, quotes, and other generally funny things. The entries are divided into nearly two hundred categories to make it easy for anyone to find the right laugh for any occasion. If you're faced with the prospect of having to "say a few words," Steve Allen's Private Joke File is the perfect place to look for ideas and inspiration on such topics as awards, drinking, baseball, lawyers, dentists, insurance, marriage, the stock market, and dozens of other subjects. A sampling:
* My wife and I had words, but I never got to use mine!
* If ignorance is bliss, he should die of joy.
* "How are the acoustics here?"
"Great, I can hardly hear you!"
* I learned to rumba very early in life ... I had a tricycle with a loose seat.
* Room for rent, by young lady, freshly plastered.
Steve Allen has also included a number of his favorite essays and monologues. Steve Allen's Private Joke File is great to flip through for fun or for function, and for those of us looking for a good laugh -- to give one or to have one -- it's indispensable.
Customer Reviews:
I loved Steve but this but book is a disappointment:.......2001-08-30
I ADORED Steve Allen. As a child I watched his show. I still remember watching the last television appearance of my hero Lou Costello, doing a solo comedy bit, his famous Army march routine, right after he split with Bud Abbott. I loved Steve Allen's syndicated show in the 60s. And about 10 years ago, I wrote him a letter telling him how much I loved his shows and his book More Funny People which contains marvelous profiles of comedians. I asked him where I could get the first edition, Funny People. About two weeks later I was shocked to open the door to find a UPS deliverman standing there with a BIG box of various autographed Steve Allen books. He had sent them to me FOR FREE -- to me, a journalist and a nobody. Today I am a fulltime ventriloquist -- a professional nobody. And I am amazed by his generosity. So rating this book three stars, especially so soon after his untimely death, is extremely sad for me. I feel like a traitor. But I have to be honest: this book is a HUGE disappointment. From the cover it looks as if he had seen Milton Berle's Private Joke File and decided to quickly put out his own. But unlike Uncle Miltie's thick two volumes of hilarious jokes, you don't sense that these were Steve Allen's best jokes or best collection of humorous material from his actual files. Berle seemed to offer readers the best that he had -- insults, puns, long jokes, roast lines, you name it. It was as if Berle was trying to pass on a legacy. Quite a few of Steve Allen's jokes are puns and other kinds of plays on words. Some are extremely old jokes found in kids joke books. Some are jokes that he apparently did use but are so incredibly dated you wonder if he even had an editor on this project. I always circle joke books and I honestly circled few here; there are SOME gems -- but if the book didn't have the name "Steve Allen" on it, the joke portions would not compare favorably to many other joke books. This book's best part is at the very end: his collection of speeches, monologues and essays. Some are too punny (he truly seems to have been heavily influenced by Groucho Marx and Groucho's plays on words)but some will indeed make you laugh out loud. The contrast between these sections and the supposedly private joke file is huge -- and the boring, done-to-death and dated stuff is not outweighed by the occasional hilarity. In all, Steve Allen's Private Joke File's content does not live up to the brand name. I almost gave this four stars in deference to a comic great. But I had to be honest: if his name was not on it, this would qualify as a VERY weak joke book.
A mixed bag of mostly dated material.......2001-07-29
The late Steve Allen was a very smart and successful entertainer and writer. He is known to have started The Tonight Show and he published shelves full of books and songs. But this collection is lacking in a few areas-and this makes it a frustrating book. First, like Dumbth (another of his popular books), Allen beats the reader over the head with political agendas that severely detract from the reading. Sure, he might be right that TV violence can be bad, but is a joke book really the forum for such diatribes? Also, MANY of the jokes are so dated that the book seems like an antique though it was published just last year (2000). One joke starts: "Color television will be here soon." Another jokes about a vacuum salesman who goes to a house that has only gas and no electricity. Perhaps your great-grandmother will chuckle. Lastly, many of the jokes are so poorly put into context that they are impossible to understand. Some are not even complete one-liners: more like half-liners. A few jokes are sentence fragments. The reader longs for a good set-up and punchline. Many of the jokes smack of situations that were clearly funny to Allen when they occured (in the 50s?) but without having been there, I am left wondering where the humor is. There are several quips about stars of movies from decades ago. If you are not familiar with people like "Otto Preminger," forget trying to read this book. Under the heading of Shakespeare (there's one joke): "Shakespeare wrote a play about Popeye called Merchant of Spinach." That's funny? Clearly not because it's not a clever pun, nor does it make sense. Especially when we know that Popeye didn't sell spinach. He only consumed it. I could come up with puns like this all night. But I am not going to publish them. Also, these are family-oriented (though it would be perfect for a pre-1960s family) and some of the jokes are funnier when the reader tries to find unintended adult humor between the lines. All-in-all, this collection is tame and dated and frustrating, but if you just want to buy your grandparents a nice gift, they will adore this collection. ADDENDUM: To restate what another reviewer mentioned, the monologues and longer passages at the end of the book are actually rather funny because they have a context in which to make true humor.
Miss Steve Allen with a smile.......2001-03-15
He invented in the talk show and was a true gentleman of comedy. This book is a time capsule of what great comedy was in the 50 years steve allen was on the scene. the most imitated man in show business, and the author of countless books, is perhaps the most qualified to give us the ultimate joke book. Not only will the amateur emcee or speech maker find comedic gold to mine, but the fans of Steves classic TV show while find many of his witty monologues and essays. The only negative criticism I'd have of this book is that joke books can be trying to read. It's more a comedic reference than anything else. You won't find yourself curl;ing up by the fire to read one liner after one liner, but the section of monologues provides much before bed delight! If you were saddened by steve's passing, you'll find plenty to sm,ile about here. In short, a great memento of the talent and an even greater comedic resource. Younger comics could learn that wit gets more laughs than vulgarity form this book!

Fill in the Gaps.......2007-01-13
This book is written as a series of concert reviews but it is much more. The author describes events leading up to the concerts and, in some cases, explains why certain concerts were more important to the band's development than others.
I find the ability to follow a particular song's progress from introduction to regular part of the band's set one of the most interesting aspects of this book. If you are interested in the evolution of Led Zeppelin's live set, you will likely enjoy this book. If you're looking for a band biography, you'll probably be happier with "Hammer of the Gods" by Stephen Davis or "Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin - Uncensored" by Richard Cole with Richard Trubo more than this book.
A must for every Zeppelin fan.......2006-11-09
I find this book to be very interesting and so full of information, I think of it as an encyclopedia for all that is Zeppelin. It's a great addition to my collection..
Good new information.......2006-02-20
I own several Led Zep books so it was nice to get my hands on this one by Dave Lewis - one of the band's keepers. The good news for Zep-philes is that there is new information. This book makes a good complement to Luis Rey's Zep concert book (now out-of-print I believe). It doesn't try to be academic but rather anecdotal - so that we get a much better picture of the actual live environment that Zep lived in at the time.
It includes reviews from various news sources and on-the-ground accounts of what happened here and there. Would have been nice if the book was a little longer, but it aims to be concise rather than overwritten.
Lewis also tries to be as balanced as he can be. Sure, there's room to disagree on this and that, but this is a good if not essential companion for Zep collectors keen on learning more on the band's live legacy.
Various Information.......2005-10-13
If you want to know Led Zeppelin, listen their music and see the performance, there is nothing better way.
However the book like this may be helpful to see closely thier works. Led Zeppelin, as you know, they are not present anymore. Books can be a help to get information.
You get the some back story of making each album and each numbers. Most interaseting section is Live Performance reference. You know which number is performed in live. I was surprised there are many numbers, which were mostly my favorites, they are not performed in thier present time.
If you want to know some references in addtion thier albums, take it.
very well written.......2000-06-19
this book was a close up view of how the lifes of led zeppelin was lived during the time from discovery to stardom. it gives a good account of how each member affected the sound of heavy metal. it shows their trials and troubles and the good times to. i talks about how they dealt with groupies and how they meshed well with the bbc so i give this book a good review.

Art Attack: The Midnight Politics of a Guerrilla Artist
ASIN: 0971920613 |
Book Description
"I can say with absolute certainty that none of these -pictures are resident in the White House."-Sean Walsh, Official White House Spokesperson
Artburn is a collection of the best pages from the last five years of Robbie Conal's satirical monthly column in the LA Weekly, updated with background factoids and secret war stories about his subjects, including the likes (and dislikes) of: Dubya, Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft, Rush Limbaugh, Bill, Hillary and Monica, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, even Bill Gates, among others. Artburn includes production shots of the original pages Robbie and his midnight deadline crew perpetrated at the very alternative LA Weekly, and a chapter of images and voices of the denizens themselves. We've even thrown in a dozen late-night remixes that were too hot for the Weekly to print.
Robbie Conal grew up in New York City and became a stone-cold Hippie in San Francisco, landing in a storefront in the Haight Ashbury district in 1964. He did time in Connecticut-with time off for bad behavior in Soho-then moved to Los Angeles, where he now makes street posters and caricatures for the LA Weekly, satirizing politicians of both parties, televangelists, media pundits and global capitalists. Robbie has gained national prominence as the country's premiere poster artist; his work has been featured on "CBS This Morning," "Charlie Rose," and in Time, Newsweek, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and many other national publications. His first book, Art Attack: The Midnight Politics of a Guerilla Artist, was published by HarperPerennial in 1992.
Book Description
By the late 1960s more than a few critics of American culture groused about the condition of television programming and, in particular, the quality and content of television shows for children. In the eyes of the reform-minded, commercial television crassly exploited young viewers; its violence and tastelessness served no higher purpose than the bottom line.
The Children's Television Workshop (CTW) -- and its fresh approach to writing and producing programs for kids -- emerged from this growing concern. Sesame Street -- CTW's flagship, hour-long show -- aimed to demonstrate how television could help all preschoolers, including low-income urban children, prepare for first grade. In this engaging study Robert W. Morrow explores the origins and inner workings of CTW, how the workshop in New York scripted and designed Sesame Street, and how the show became both a model for network television as well as a thorn in its side.
Through extensive archival research and a systematic study of sample programs from Sesame Street's first ten seasons, Morrow tells the story of Sesame Street's creation; the ideas, techniques, organization, and funding behind it; its place in public discourse; and its ultimate and unfortunate failure as an agent of commercial television reform.
Customer Reviews:
The origin and politics of the Children's Television Workshop which fostered Sesame Street to success .......2006-07-23
By the late 1960s many were criticizing the quality and nature of children's television programming: from this criticism emerged Sesame Street, a blend of entertainment and education aimed at reaching a wide audience of preschoolers. Here the origin and politics of the Children's Television Workshop which fostered Sesame Street to success is told in chapters which consider how it emerged to became a flagship of good network programming. Archival research and a study of sample programs from the show's first ten seasons survey its ideas, organization, and what made it stand out from the crowd. At first glance this would seem of interest only to avid show fans; but look again: any student of film, television, sociology and American history will find it intriguing and educational.

Book Description
The popular Microcontroller Application Cookbook "Volume 1" as well as "Volume 2" are included in this two volume set. Each book is based on the BASIC Stamp 2 microcontroller, and includes complete schematic diagrams as well as code samples to help you create working circuits fast.
Book Description
The Microcontroller Application Cookbook is the beginner's sourcebook for "real-world" machine control. It features over 100 schematics and code samples based on the popular BASIC Stamp2 Microcontroller.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-03-13
For someone trying to get into robotics, and/or electronics, this is a great book. It has a bunch of schematics for creating a variety of circuits. This is extremely helpful for people who don't have much, or any experience with circuit design.
I have a bachelors + associates degree in mechanical engineering, with a minimal electrical/electronics background. I found this book to be fairly easy to read. However, the content is lacking. I felt the descriptions of the items could have been better explained/described. Instead the author assumes some knowledge of electronics for many of the circuits. However, much of the info can easily be found on the web.
I think it is a great book, and is a must have for any serious electronics hobbist, or engineer.
OVER PRICED DATA.......2007-02-05
This book is over priced for the simple interface projects or data given. You can get better data for interfaceing hardware to the Basic Stamp from N&V.
Fine for Hobbies, Poor for Design.......2003-10-18
If you wanna make some microcontroller gizmos quickly and simply, this is the book for you. However, if you're more interested in designing an embedded system and need at little help interfacing to the analog world, find a more thourough book written by a hardware or digital systems engineer.
All the included circuits work for prototying, test, and hobby I/O interfacing to the real world, and are easy to understand. But please do not make the mistake of using this book as a design guide for potential consumer/commercial/industrial products or scientific uses.
A grate book.......2002-01-13
This is truly a grate book for the beginners aand amaturs
in stamp circuts, it solved ALL my circut problems, and gave me
a lot of new ideas.. Don't wayt buy it NOW.
Indispensible.......2002-01-13
Of the several books I purchased to learn how to use the Basic Stamp 2 computer, this is the book I keep returning to again and again as a reliable reference. The circuits and program code samples can be directly applied to your projects. The examples are based on integrated circuits and components that are up to date and are, therefore, easy to find and buy.
My only criticism is the title, which really should have contained the term, "Basic Stamp," because that's what the book is about. Some of the circuits might be readily adapted to the PIC or Atmel or other microcontrollers, but this is a essentially Basic Stamp 2 cookbook.
Book Description
C'mon back for Seconds! Volume Two contains all new schematics, code and applications information. It's the second Volume in the popular "Cookbook" series that features the BASIC Stamp 2 microcontroller.
Customer Reviews:
OVER PRICED.......2007-02-05

One step further........2002-09-14
Matt Gilliand's 2. book is just wath I was looking for.
It takes us one step further from the first book.
Personaly I love the motor part with the stepper and Dc motors.
And like book nr one the circuits is easely explained and they
works the first time ... No problems..

Book Description
Included with the popular Microcontroller Application Cookbook, Vol. 2, is the new "Homework Board" (by Parallax). The Homework Board includes a fully functional BASIC Stamp 2 embedded on a printed circuit board, along with a breadboard prototyping area..
You'll need to provide your own DB-9 serial cable (for connecting to your PC's serial port), 9 volt battery, and download the *free* editor software from Parallax's website. The Homework Board is perfect for building many of the circuits contained in both volumes of the Microcontroller Application Cookbook series.
Customer Reviews:
not too bad.......2006-03-19
As advertised, has a selection of partial circuits that can be combined together to give you ideas for projects. Refers back to book one for several of the circuits in book two, so be careful there. The circuit is a Basic Stamp Homework Board, which you can buy separately from Parallax if you want to, though the price bundled with the book isn't bad. The Homework Board has the guts of the stamp built into the board, though, so if you blow it you'd either have to resolder the component or buy a new board. As far as I can tell, there are built in resistors on each of the I/O lines, so there's less chance you'll do that. It comes packaged in a static bag that contains the board and 4 rubber feet that adhere to the bottom of the board. There's also a flyer directing you to Parallax's website for documentation; their website is a little cluttered and kind of hard to find. You'll need to buy a serial cable -- one gotcha is that it can't be a null modem cable; it *must* be a cable where all the pins are routed through. (I spent several hours trying to figure out what I was doing wrong before I realized that was the problem.) Also, I went to a local radio supply store and bought a static mat and a static wrist bracelet so I don't zap my investment.
The example programs that are provided with the circuits are usually pretty useless and repetetive. Most of the time, they're a small loop that toggles a pin or checks a pin before printing a debug message. Though it takes up space, they don't really detract from the book that much.
Something bad about the books is that there is some repetition of the circuits. Given that the books are so small, you'd think they'd be able to come up with unique circuits for every page, but no dice.
Let's see.. I also am using Linux software (bstamp) to program and debug the stamp, which works. I had to download the source and apply a two-line patch. If you're not comfortable rebuilding source or modifying C code, then I'd stick with windows. The Linux stuff doesn't seem to be very actively developed anymore (though it works).
Overall, this board and books (I bought the first book as well) were good. They give you maybe 20 or 25 partial circuits for $20 (at the time I bought it). I think that the Basic Stamp2 processors let me ignore the circuitry that's required to run the processor, but due to the cost (like $30-$50), I won't be buying another. It is a quick and easy way to get playing.
