These essays tackle the vexing problem of the federal budget—how and why it has grown so large, why most “deficit-reduction” measures are either shams or predestined to fail, and why understanding budget issues is so difficult.

Book Description
Vilimani is an examination of the social and environmental consequences of labor migration in early colonial Tanzania. Sunseri relies on a number of case studies to explore transformations in slavery and porterage, social and work life on plantations and railways, gendered conflict at the household and village level, and how rural social change intersected with the Maji Maji rebellion of 1905. Perhaps half a million men and women entered colonial wage labor circuits during German rule in Tanzania. Framed within the context of industrialization in Germany, this study looks at some of the social consequences of labor migration, the motivations of colonial wage workers, and how labor migrants came to shape many aspects of the colonial economy. Changes in the rural environment that resulted from labor migration are given as much attention as labor struggles at the work site. Vilimani - destined to become the standard work.......2002-05-31
Vilimani is destined to become the standard work on the subject of labour in colonial Tanzania, and is also a significant contribution to the study of rural change in Africa as a whole. Dr. Sunseri's collection and treatment of the evidence is superlative, and his writing is crisp and direct.

Not Everybody Embraces This Method.......2005-04-01
While in most cases, hugs are viewed as positive, there is the very real issue of those who neither like nor want hugs. Forcing people to put up with hugs does not endear them to this; it is just another way of disregarding their needs. Another problem with forcing people to endure hugs it that it only meets the hugger's need. It is also a blatant disregard for the feelings and needs of those who don't want to be hugged in the first place. However, hugs CAN be wonderful if the parties involved are comfortable with each other, like and want this. There are benefits to hugging, and this book does outline them well, but there is also the flip side of the coin which is very rarely discussed.
Hugging is NOT a panacea for all ills. This review is NOT to discount the very real benefits hugging has in many cases, but to address the needs of those who feel differently. How unfortunate that something that has traditionally been perceived as loving and positive can be misapplied into something unnatural and forced.
There are many reasons why there are people who are uncomfortable with and/or dislike hugs. For example, there are some cultures where privacy is encouraged and people are not overly demonstrative. In the cases of many individuals with autism, hugging can be highly unpleasant due to a) onslaught of sensory input and b) it can feel very restrictive. In some one case, a child actually hid from a relative who would sweep down on children with loud displays of affection. From the child's perspective, the hugger looked like a potential attacker and was just too loud. Aversion for hugs is not limited to the shy and autistic population. Not EVERYBODY is demonstrative. Other conditions can also factor into this: being forced to hug and/or endure hugs from people one does not like or know; being told to hug someone "on cue." That makes for a very unnatural response/behavior indeed.
Again, hugging is something that is often one-sided: it meets the hugger's need only and does not address the very real issue of people who don't want hugs under any conditions. I didn't like the bear costumes and felt that undermined the premise of the book. I also didn't like the assumption that when someone initially turns down a hug, they will eventually cave in and go along with it. Donna Williams does a superb job of addressing this very issue in her book, "Autism: An Inside-Out Approach." She outlines the problems that this method CAN have and why it is really not a sure-cure for everybody.

question to paulfer.......2001-09-28
Hey paulfer, what book would you recommend for a complete newbie that wanted to get started with multi-track recording?
Disappointing........2001-01-17
This book is a very quick read, and touches on the most general concepts of digital recording. It packs a lot of information for such a tiny volume (it's only slightly bigger than your wallet), but unfortunately this doesn't leave room for much detail. At best, this book would make a handy quick-reference to keep in your back pocket during recording sessions. But as others here have noted, this is not a book to recommend for newbies who really want to get their feet wet in the fast-moving world of digital recording.
It's good, but don't recommend it to a total newbie.......2000-10-03
Basic Digital Recording is essentially useful. I learned things I didn't know before, and it helped me solve a problem I was having, as well as another I hadn't recognized yet! It's important for me to establish this book's utility right from the start, because most of this review is going to focus on its shortcomings, the reasons for my having given it only a three-star rating. There are two general weaknesses: there are some gaps, and it's not graded. First, the gaps. The biggest omission occurs in the chapter on music software - there's lots about midi, but nary a mention of programs like Cakewalk, Cubase, Vegas, Cool Edit, etc - the software that anyone *not* using midi needs to know about. A beginner would get badly misled by this. When it comes to plug-ins, it talks about VST, but neglects to mention Direct-X, which are hugely useful and popular. Also, the book suffers from a lack of an index, and although there's a glossary, it is sometimes insufficient, not covering technical terms used in the book. Finally there's a less-than-useful British bias to it: it mentions sospubs.co, for instance, but none of the excellent US-based homerecording and professional recording websites. What's the internet for, if not easy access to international sites? As for it not being graded: it's not a course that takes you from zero knowledge to putting together your first demo in 100 graded steps and stages, making it a bit difficult to learn from sometimes. The first chapter, for instance, is very offputting, defining digital audio terms and equipment. If what you were trying to do was get a digital project studio started, you'd still be wondering where to start when you were on page 40 - it probably would have done better to start with the second chapter which covers different recording systems. And despite going to great lengths to define concepts and equipment, the book assumes some prior knowledge of audio recording. Sometimes it reminds me a bit of the all-too-common equipment manual which seems incomprehensible until you finally learn how to use the gear. I'm going to stop at this point, because I don't want to trash the book - that's why I gave it three stars, after all. It's useful, and I learned things from it, so I should sound more grateful perhaps. But I can't help thinking that as the 'basic' digital recording book which it claims to be, it could have been more user-friendly, especially with the beginner in mind.
Solid Technical Information.......2000-04-27
This book provides a good starting point for learning about digital recording. It has a few general chapters on digital music and recording systems and then becomes more specific when discussing soundcard studios, music computers and software and how to create an album.
I was completely behind the trend of digital music, but this book caught me up quickly.

Book Description
This is a book about the public display of death in contemporary culture. It consists of a series of essays on specific cases in which death is displayed in museums and in photography. The essays focus mainly on representations of violence and death in events in recent Israeli history, including the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and the Palestinian Intifada, and on the visual presence of traumatic events in Israeli culture throughout the twentieth century. They show how images of these events both shape and aestheticize the viewer's experience of death.
The book offers a new reading of the work of Walter Benjamin, particularly his essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." Engaging the disciplinary perspectives of philosophy, art history, cultural studies, and photographic theory, the book also draws upon the work of such writers as Jean Baudrillard, Pierre Bourdieu, Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, Jürgen Habermas, Jean-François Lyotard, and Jean-Luc Nancy.
Product Description
The fabulous Golden Age of Radio -- the 1930s & 1940s -- possessed a sense of excitement, purpose & unpredictability that made it one of America's most memorable eras. At the center of it was Norman Corwin, who as writer, director & producer brought an intelligence & eloquence previously unheard over the medium. CBS broadcast Corwin's classic achievements, among them the 1941 "We Hold These Truths" & the VE Day special, "On a Note of Triumph." He worked with great performers like Orson Welles & James Stewart. This is the biography of a man who elevated the art & integrity of broadcasting. It is a detailed, nostalgic remembrance of an unforgettable age, full of the voices & personalities that are part of our golden past. B&W photos.

Customer Reviews:
Poor book.......2007-03-20
I hoped more. It is a very basic book, with elemental examples and no clear directions on the best use of SAS.
Great for real life applications.......2007-01-01
Great book.. It is a great asset to my SAS library.
Too much unecessary detail about reading in data.......2006-11-10
Theres just too much unecessary material in this book about ways to read in data etc. Its all unecessary cos like myself most professional analysts and statisticians have access to SAS enterprise guide, which is incredibly powerful and so much less time consuming. The programming language is only useful for algorithms these days, as most professionals havent got the time to be debugging code all day. The text covers nothing about cluster analysis either which is central to a lot of multi variate analysis.
The mathematics and statistical detail is of far more interest and importance to us in the working environment than reading in of files.
Poor value.......2006-10-14
The book can be helpful to college students, but is of little benefit to more seasoned statisticians. The title notwithstanding, most of its chapters deal with general-purpose SAS programming; the rest (totaling 100-150 pages) offer a very basic review of REG, TTEST, LOGISTIC and FACTOR procedures, something that you can easily find online. (Check out the SAS tutorials offered by UCLA). I like and recommend Ron Cody's other books, but not this overpriced softcover.
Blergh.......2006-09-13
I did not like this book. The organization was abysmal, and I decided to sell it back to the college bookstore for use by future hapless students, because it is not good as a reference guide.
I did not like how the author seemed to gear the book to an audience that is terrified of their computers or anything dealing with *gasp* math.
