Book Description
In this book a distinguished group of contributors discuss the changing political economy of pension reform. They focus on those countries which have launched a significant reframing of their pension system. Each chapter provides a detailed review of recent pension reforms and offers institutional evidence of the extent to which these reforms suggest a redirection of the welfare state towards a more public-private mix of policies. The countries were selected to represent the variety of new directions which mature industrial countries as well as countries in transition have taken.
The book brings to light a number of surprising developments. These include: the observation that pension systems do not conform to pure models of welfare system regimes; that a number of diverse developments have contributed to the extension of private pensions; that an emerging pattern of substituting private for public pensions can be detected but public provision still dominates in transition economies; and that traditional employer-provided private pension schemes are undergoing significant change. One conclusion is that the design of the pension scheme may be more important than the mix of public-private in preventing the growth of inequality among the aged.

Book Description
The most comprehensive and definitive coverage of labor union law ever published.
Labor union laws and regulations can be complicated, inconsistent, conceptually difficult, and relatively obscure. Moreover, because statutes in this area of law are fairly general, courts can disagree about how to interpret them. Now for the first time, the American Bar Association's Section of Labor and Employment Law organizes and clarifies the widely varying laws and regulations governing labor unions with its new treatise Labor Union Law and Regulation.
In one volume, this exhaustive treatise covers all the significant aspects of labor union laws and regulations that are of crucial importance to the life of any labor union, including:
--union membership rights and obligations --collection and expenditure of union finances --union elections --union security --the union's duty of fair representation --interunion relations --and union trusteeships
Seasoned practitioners explore every facet of labor union law and provide incisive analysis and valuable guidance to other practitioners.

From the author: Scholars have not taken adequate account of variation in the interest arbitration process in their research on the effects of interest arbitration on bargaining outcomes. There are two fundamental approaches to interest arbitration, which they term the "judicial prototype" and the "negotiation prototype." The recent cases involving the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association (PBA) of New York City and the city of New York illustrate the differences in these two approaches. There is a relationship between the arbitration prototype and the bargaining power of the parties. A party with greater bargaining power should prefer the negotiation prototype in interest arbitration. The New York City police cases--especially the effects of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001--are analyzed to determine whether changes in the parties' bargaining power affected their approach to interest arbitration.

Book Description
The parallel histories of music and science - from celestial harmony to cosmic dissonance. For centuries, scientists and philosophers believed that the universe was a stately, ordered mechanism, mathematical and musical. The perceived distances between objects in the sky mirrored (and were mirrored by) the spaces between notes that formed chords and scales. The smooth operation of the cosmos created a divine harmony that composers sought to capture. With
The Music of
the Spheres, readers will see how this scientific philosophy emerged, how it was shattered by changing views of the universe and the rise of Romanticism, and to what extent it survives today. From Pythagoras to Newton, Bach to Beethoven, and on into the twentieth century of Einstein, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Cage, and Glass, this is a spellbinding examination of the interwoven fates of science and music throughout history.
Customer Reviews:
Not a definitive exposition but a nice introduction.......2001-06-20
Jamie James did not write, in this work, the definitive exposition on The Music of the Spheres. What is contained in this work is, however, an excellent introduction into the topic in my opinion. Many of the key players are mentioned and a bit of biographical background information is presented with them which provides a good reference point for more reading.
As a good introduction should, this book starts in the ancient past with Pythagoras and Plato and moves right up to the 20th century. There is a bit, perhaps, of editorial bias on some of the characters that have been involved in this topic throughout history; nevertheless, one is not put off on anyone mentioned by the book if someone decided they'd like more than an introductory course in the Music of the Spheres.
As it was my intention, before even reading this book, to look deep into this subject, I was not put off at all by the historical coverage of the topic as opposed to a more practical treatment. It's not an in-depth practical work on the Music of the Spheres, but as an introduction to the topic and coverage of some of the historical and biographical background, I was not left disappointed.
A very interesting read, it fueled the desire to look deeper into the subject and helped shed a little background and perspective on a few of the historical figures connected with the topic. Worth the read, even twice.
Regrettably Concise.......2000-04-24
I began reading this book with the highest of expectations, based both upon the credentials of the author and the reviews contained herein. However, now that I have completed it, I must rate it with some personal disappointment. Although the book is some 230 pages long and covers several millennia worth of history, its structure lends the feeling that it is a collection of condensed articles taken from the pages of periodicals. Anyone who reads Discovery Magazine will immediately recognize this factually succinct trait.
And succinct is what best describes the depth of information presented by this book. It provides a very thorough lineage of relevant historical figures throughout the ages, but sadly it only gives the majority of them a cursory mention. While he devotes alot of attention to the specific numerological devices of Pythagoras and such, very little of their ideas are easily comprehendible according to his fragmented explanations, and the reader must go to an outside source to grasp their true mechanics. The passages concerning musical scales suffers especially from a lack of explanation, and if I had not already possessed an insight into their nature, I would have been utterly befuddled about what Mr. James was trying to tell me.
Further on, the author begins to insert his personal opinions about the people he is describing. In an interesting chronicle of a minor feud between Kepler and Fludd, Mr. James draws sides immediately and nearly dismisses Fludd as a mystic who merely regurgitated archaic knowledge, but only after slight after slight does he admit, seemingly regrettably and with an apologetic tone, that the very crux of Kepler's argument was wrong. And worse still, near the end he offers the opinion that Brahms was the `most cosmic' composer of all time, and then in no way supports his conjecture. It is incredibly frustrating to try and figure out why the author feels the way he does about almost every subject he brings up, an obstacle made even more difficult given the author's semi bombastic, abstruse sentence structure. A notable exception to this is his chapter on Newton, which was the most thorough and intelligible character description offered.
In summation, the phrase `A brief and cursory history of' should be inserted before its title to give any potential reader an accurate idea of what this interesting-yet uneven and biased-account of the dissolution of and between science and music achieves. It mentions fascinating concepts and ideas, but altogether it does little more than refer to them with a glib capacity.
Fabulous!.......1999-12-27
Get inside the mind of Pitagoras and Plato and discover an extraordinary interpretation of music. Then drift away through Reinassence Science till the XX century and find how connected the universe, the music and the human mind are. Music can even start a rebellion, as it happened in Belgica.
A beautifully written history of music and science........1998-07-12
This is a beautifully written exposition of both the harmony between music and science before the Renaissance, and the separation of the two into divergent disciplines after. James captures the beauty of the beliefs of the early musician-scientists, and how their contemplations sought to explain the meaning of life, God, and (like the Unification Theory of today) all existence. It is a fascinating story of how, one by one, scientific proofs separated science from the arts as knowledge increased. The book is well-explained, stimulating to the higher brain, and soothing to the lower brain. (Sorry, but if you get that, then you get it--and the book.) A rare non-fiction in that I never put it down.

Book Description
The past few decades have seen a remarkable surge in Jewish influences on American culture. Entertainers and artists such as Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, and Tony Kushner have heralded new waves of television, film, and theater; a major klezmer revival is under way; bagels are now as commonplace as pizza; and kabalah has become as cool as crystals. Does this broad range of cultural expression accurately reflect what it means to be Jewish in America today?
Bringing together fourteen essays by leading scholars, You Should See Yourself examines the fluctuating representations of Jewishness in a variety of areas of popular culture and high art, including literature, the media, film, theater, music, dance, painting, photography, and stand-up comedy. Contributors explore the evolution that has taken place within these cultural forms, whether transformations have been gradual or sudden, and how we can best explain these changes. Are variations in our understanding of Jewishness the result of general phenomena such as multiculturalism, politics, and postmodernism, or are they the product of more specifically Jewish concerns such as the intermarriage/continuity crisis, religious renewal, and relations between the United States and Israel?
An introduction by Vincent Brook frames the essays by comparing Jewish identity in American culture to the fractured identities that are the norm in postmodern society. Accessible to students and general readers alike, this volume takes an important step toward advancing the discussion of Jewish cultural influences in this country.

Decorating Tips & Photos for Fans of the Show.......2005-05-28
These spin off books from the television decorating shows give the viewer more depth than the show allows or can disappoint. Here I had trouble with the book's format. Some pages crowded five photos together making it hard to see the details. For project how-to, the one-page instructions seem skimpy for ambitions projects like slipcovering a chair or applying fabric to the wall. The 14 pages devoted to a chronological guide of the show's episodes seems pretty self-indulgent.
Despite those criticisms, there are good ideas to be found here. I liked the project of tracing words onto semisheer fabric for a pillow cover. I'd recommend borrowing this book from the library, unless you are a hardcore fan of the show.
Great Idea-Book.......2004-04-22
This is a great book if you're looking for ideas on how to decorate your room. It has plenty of rooms and styles to choose from. I re-did our master bedroom, using a look I saw in here, and it looks fantastic!
"Make It Yours" isn't going to give you tips and techniques on how to do each little thing in the room, but it gives you a good foundation of how to achieve the overall look.
Wish it were longer!!.......2004-03-13
Loved this book! It gave me so many ideas and inspiration, there are a ton of things I want to do in my house now. If you like the show and want to update your house, take a look here. My only complaint was that it was too brief, I wish they'd do more rooms, make it longer. I need more!! Ok, so I'm a little addicted.
One Big Caveat.......2003-11-30
I, too, used to be devoted to the show, but have grown weary of some of the designers with no talent. This book has gorgeous pictures, a myriad of things you can do yourself and does not mercifully feature Paige that much. However, devoting 6 (count them) pages to that hideous bathroom that Hildi covered with artificial flowers was a large dirty trick. I could not believe the ugliness of that bathroom, imagining the steam making those flowers run, and the dust, etc. build up on them. Then, when you tire of that decor, (instantly) the hours it will take to remove the staples and refinish the walls for a new treatment. She does this over and over because she is plain lazy. Just likes to plaster idiotic labels, records and the posies all over walls. I wonder how she would like this treament in her own house. I wouldn't let her near a possession of mine. The book gave Kia, another decorator with no talent, not much space. Considering the hideous rooms she has done, that was not a surprise. Love Vern, Frank, Edward, but the women are off the wall.I still buy the dern books though, can't resist. Not enough range of colors used though, predominantly oranges, rusts, reds, grays and browns. None of which I like or would use. I think I would hire a decorator rather than rely on these people.
Even better than the first book.......2003-09-10
I'm addicted to Trading Spaces and love their books. I bought the first book which was about the show behind the scenes, and I loved it. But this is even better because it's all about decorating ideas shown in rooms from the show. It's kind of like a freeze-frame look at the show because I can stop and study the rooms from TV instead of being frustrated when the video cameras pan a room too quickly. I am seeing a lot of ideas that went right by me when I saw the rooms on TV. There is great information in here and pix of all my favorite rooms.
