I happen to be part of one of the families discussed in this book. I found it to be quite nice. I wasn't mentioned in the book but my mother, grandma, granpa etc. was. I think Geta did a fabulous job in making this book a success! It took a lot of time to archive this information about my family, and through this book, I am able to know where my ancestors came from and pass the book on to my children in the years to come. thank You.

        Sincerely, Sommer Hayes

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Screwed by Carl Hiaasen.......2007-01-11

My husband got this book from the library and all I heard was him laughing while he read it. We bought it for my daughter who lives in Florida and is an environmental science teacher. Before giving it to her during a recent visit, I had to read it. I too laughed like crazy. Carl has a way of putting all the bad stuff people have done to the state of Florida in a humorous manner but gets his point across at the same time.

3 out of 5 stars Witty and biting, but dated and geo-specific.......2005-06-28

I have read several of Hiaasen's novels and have enjoyed them immensely. From reading this collection of his columns, I now know where he gets many of his ideas for characters and ridiculous plotlines. Truth is truly stranger than fiction in South Florida! Developers run amok, politicians are on the take from everyone, criminals of all stripes don't even bother to hide what they're doing. Hiaasen exposes it all in his inimitably sarcastic way. I did enjoy many of the columns and appreciated Hiaasen's skill. However, most of the columns were from several years ago, with many of them being from the 80s. Also, not having spent a lot of time in South Florida, I couldn't always relate to the issues at hand. I would probably have been satisfied with a collection half as long. But I did enjoy reading about the madness that is life as usual in South Florida.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better Than His Best Novels.......2004-04-03

I wish I could say I was a rabid Carl Hiaasen fan like a lot of people who seem to love all of his novels, because I love to read and love good writing, and Hiaasen's writing style is always excellent. I loved "Tourist Season", "Sick Puppy", and "Stormy Weather", but thought that he was pushing it a little in some of his other novels like "Lucky You" and "Native Tongue" where the plots were, at least in my opinion a little contrived. So when I got this book, which is a collection of his newspaper articles for the Miami Herald, I wasn't sure what I was going to think about it.
It's excellent! I thought his best novels were very good but his true calling is his work as a reporter. The articles are meaningful in the way that he exposes corruption and the destruction of Florida's natural resources, but they're written with a great sarcastic wit. I know a little about South Florida politics and environmental issues, because we always vacation in Key West and you get the news on television from Miami, but you don't need to in order to enjoy this book tremendously. There are too many great articles in this collection to name them all, but the one about the "Incredible Shrinking Palm Trees" in particular is one of the funniest things I've ever read. This book is better than even his best novels, and the shame of it is that all of it is [unfortunately] true.

          5 out of 5 stars A crusader with a sense of humour.......2002-12-06

I love this man's writing! I started with his fiction and having devoured all there was of that at the time I stumbled on his first book of Miami Herald columns. I bought Paradise Screwed as soon as it was out.
The really exciting thing about Carl is that he takes on the corruption and the sleaze and the bizarre goings on in Florida and makes people aware of them through witty yet hard hitting writing. He isn't afraid to make waves and when you read this book you will begin to wonder about the greasing of the wheels in State politics.
He is passionate about his home state and what is happening to it and as a visitor to Florida on more than one occassion, he has really made me think about the affects of inconsiderate development and tourism.
But even if you aren't keen on any of that, the columns are clever and well written, so it's well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars What Michael Moore is to the nation, Hiaasen is to Florida.......2002-03-25

Another collection of "baseball-bat-to-the-forehead" columns in a similar writing style as Moore. Both men use biting satire and their wicked wit to tell you what they think, and are unafraid in doing so. Hiaasen is even more impressive I think because his substantive job is still journalism and yet he can find humor in real people and events as easily as in fiction.

These columns are a selection from over the last 20 years of events in South Florida. You don't have to go back any further than 2 years to Elian Gonzalez and the 2000 presidential election to know that there's enough grist-for-the-mill here to fill much more than one book on these two topics alone. Nevertheless Hiaasen reins himself in and spreads his verbal darts around. Topics covered include "Mayor loco", the soon-to-be-gone Marlins, Chads (not a person, those bits of paper, remember?) Dolphins (both the team and the ones that frequently drown offshore), Race Riots, a con artist doctor and a pet-hating extortionist. That's the more exotic stuff. Then there's the normal South Florida fare of crooked politicians, stupid state officials, assorted mobsters and mafia, drugs, guns, and general mayhem and madness. As Hiaasen said in a recent interview "all the paths of slime and disreputability seem to lead here."

The man is a Florida treasure and for those of us who live through what he writes about his humor is a saving grace. Very few of us can express it the way he does so he is our voice of reason saying yes, it's PARADISE SCREWED allright, but we're still alive we can laugh about it.

The title is Chinese for "so so". Part one, his descriptions of his own life here in Beautiful Country are by far the best part of the book. It resonated with me mightily because it reflects the experiences of my wife (who is Chinese) and of my Chinese friends. Part two was a disappointment. It's not that my views differed from his, it's that they weren't particularly noteworthy. They didn't grab my attention the way occasional essays by Pierre Ryckmans, for example, grab me. Bai Shilu

With wit, charm and insight, Dr. Shouhua Qi admirably meshes personal anecdotes and political commentary in his new book, "Bridging the Pacific: Searching for Cross-Cultural Understanding Between the United States and China."

On a cold day in January 1989, Qi arrived at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport with a $100 bill in his pocket and a goal of pursuing a doctoral degree in English at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, IL.

A spirited and accomplished writer, Qi describes his everyday life experiences which take on new dimensions and challenges: of living in a basement apartment; of walking to the grocery store on a busy street without sidewalks; of working part-time jobs; of getting his driver's license and undergoing the ultimate rite of passage-driving 70 mph on Interstate 55 to Chicago; of buying and sustaining his first car; of bringing his wife and young son to America; and of settling into his new life in the years since.

In essays exploring Sino-American relations, Dr. Qi writes that China, the largest developing nation in the world, is at a crucial stage in its history. While the country needs to broaden its citizen rights and adopt a more democratic system to realize its potential, the reforms must be tailored to Chinese culture and philosophy and occur in an orderly fashion to prevent chaos.

Lighthearted and serious, entertaining and thought-provoking, "Bridging the Pacific" focuses on the need to recognize cross-cultural similarities while overcoming ideological differences.

Fantastic book! I was so enlightened by the author's insights into complexities in US/China relations and cultural differences and so delighted by his enormous sense of humor. I particularly enjoyed his take on big issues from personal angles (Oh, those delicious anecdotes!) and his giving things surprisingly illuminating twists at most unexpected juncutres. The book is a MUST for anyone who is interested in China, cross-cultural understanding, and US/China relations.

          Book Description

Not since that famous Beverly Hills area code was etched into our minds has teen life been given such loving attention. TV's newest hit, A smart, articulate, sexy program showing "real" kids at the very top of their intellectual game, Dawson's Creek set exciting new standards for how television portrays young America. Created by Hollywood sensation Kevin Williamson, it does for the small-screen teen soap opera what his metafilmic Scream did for the slasher flick. In the small town of Capeside, a close-knit group of teenagers hang together and fall apart. Their rites of passage are familiar, classically adolescent, and as we follow Dawson, Pacey, Jen, and Joey through their exciting years we learn that life has everything to do with misbehaving. Covered in They Don't Wanna Wait are the stars: a compelling, captivating, talented bunch who leave the set each day, shaking their heads, marveling at the emotional and intellectual accuracy of the scenes they play. Revealed is what makes the show a nearly sacred experience for its participants and much Dawson Leary has in common with his creator, Kevin Williamson.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Actually there is more analysis than gossip in this book.......2003-07-27

"They Don't Wanna Wait: The Stars of Dawson's Creek" came out after the first two seasons of the recently departed signature show of the WB network. The title, of course, is inspired by the Paula Cole song that served as the theme song for the series and while this book clearly uses the young stars of the show a selling point, it actually provides a lot more insights into the series than you would expect. The first two seasons takes us through the Pacey and Ms. Jacobs, Jen and Dawson, Dawson and Joey, Joey and Jack, Pacey and Andie stages of the series. Authors Kathe Tibbs and Biff L. Peterson offer up standard cast bios of the six principles (the youngsters, not Dawson's parents or Grams), covering how each got involved in acting and was hired for the show, along with various movies in which they had appeared by that point in their careers.

However, despite the fact that "They Don't Wanna Wait" offers up the stars of "Dawson's Creek" as its selling point, these profiles are the second smallest part of the book. The second chapter is devoted to rather a detailed look at the Hollywood writing career creator of "Dawson's Creek," Kevin Williamson. "The Importance of Being Earnest," the third chapter, consists of a pair of critical essays. The first looks at "TV Teens in the 1990s," making the case for how the idyllic teen world of John Hughes films gave way to the demographic spurred youth boom of "My So-Called Life," "Party of Five," "Dawson's Creek," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The second, "Up the Creek: The 'Dawson's' Formula," refutes the dismissal of the series as simply a teenage version of "Melrose Place" ("Payton Place" is you are my age).

The final section of the book is an Episode Guide covering the episodes from the first two seasons. For each Tibbs and Peterson provide the title, writer, director, original airdate, and list of guest stars (Note: Williamson originally used movie titles as the titles for first season episodes but had to change them because of copyright problems; both titles are provided here). They do not simply provide a synopsis of the storyline for each episode, but a running commentary and analysis of what is happening (e.g., arguing Joey is the show's voyeur) that will make these sections of considerably more interest to those who have seen the show rather than the neophyte. When the authors claim that Episode 8, "Road Trip" is to Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" the way "Clueless" is to Jane Austen's "Emma," you have to admit that Tibbs and Peterson are going for more that mere summaries.

Most of the information provided about the cast and creator of "Dawson's Creek" is apparently culled from secondary sources, and each of the first three chapters concludes with a list of references. If Tibbs and Peterson ever actually interviewed Williamson or anybody else associated with the show there is no way of knowing from what is in this book (unless I missed something). I bring this up only because if this is indeed cobbled together completely from other sources you cannot find the seams. Besides, there is more than enough originality in the insights and analysis they provide in the last second chapters of the book. Those who pick up this book because they want to know more about what "Greek God" James Van Der Beek was like growing up or want another color photograph of Katie Holmes or Michelle Williams might be disappointed that the authors move on to more substantive issues than how Meredith Monroe got this acting gig, but I was pretty impressed they went for so much more in this volume. The only serious complaint is that "They Don't Wanna Wait" does not even get the gang out of Capeside High School.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This Book Is Totally Awesome!.......1999-12-10

It was so cool to read all the interesting background information on James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams! And I never knew that Kevin Williamson was really gay--he really is! Know I know why Dawson stands alone in the boat like that--he's a truth-seeker in an ocean of lies! This book tells you all the facts about the most important television show ever filmed. Yeah!

1 out of 5 stars Example of a good horrible book!!!!.......2006-03-24

Lot of good theories, i wouldn't casll it a book of "strategies" though, the BIGGEST turn off is the sample-code, it only ships with .aspx page, no code-behind!!!!!!!!!!! It's all in-line coding (tradition ASP style) and you can not debug anything since there is no solution!!!! If you let IDE handle code-behind, it doesn't behave as expected :( I can not tell you HOW FRUSTRATING it is not to be able to "run" the code, all you can do is make a virtual directory, point it to the folder where you downloaded examples and then "look" the code by entering urls manually!!!! That is it!! It's REALLY annoying and i could've given negative rating but 1 was the lowest so....

anyways, i would not buy anything like this, i got this for free from microsoft seminar (No wonder it's free!! ;-) lolz)

Save your time and money for something better :)

4 out of 5 stars Great architectural help guide, but.......2003-11-29

With ASP.NET 2.0 right around the corner, there's a new book out that will give a needed edge to your arsenal of tools with which to draw from for ASP.NET 1.x. While many in the ASP.NET community will be sticking with the first version of Microsoft's web development platform for some time to come, "Microsoft ASP.NET Coding Strategies with the Microsoft ASP.NET Team" provides a deep, insightful view of architecting, configuring, managing and extending next-gen web applications with ASP.NET.

Still, there are several code examples, albeit in the guise of snippets and clips. Many of those used are cited as being taken straight from the many free ASP.NET projects, like the ASP.NET Forums application, the ASP.NET application blocks and many of the utilities currently used on www.asp.net.

My biggest - and only - criticism of this title is, ironically, its title. Despite what the heading implies, it's not one of those books with hundreds of free scripts that you can plug into your site. It's not a gallery of free code you can rip-and-insert into your site like was available in so many ASP 3.0 books. Rather, it provides a fresh, welcome discussion on the inner-workings and processes of ASP.NET behind-the-scenes. And for that, it's very valuable.

I find it to be a great resource for experienced ASP.NET developers as an architectural guide, more than a code reference, which the title would lead one to believe (at least that's the first impression I got when I bought the book).

The book's high points are Rob Howard's outstanding comprehensive discussion of caching (which is one of the better dialogues available in print), as well as talks about working in the HTTP pipeline, developing custom HTTP handlers, and developing custom server controls.

It also seems that most of the chapters are taken straight from, or based upon, content that already exists on MSDN. While this seems to be a point of contention for many developers, I find that it's nice to have these helpful articles aggregated in a single bound collection.

At any rate, it's a good read, and will augment your knowledge of ASP.NET, what it does, how it does it, and how you can get it to work in your web apps.

4 out of 5 stars excellent, but not enough details.......2003-11-20

I bought "Microsoft ASP.NET Coding Strategies with the Microsoft ASP.NET Team" because I thought I could get some tips and tricks directly from the team who developed ASP.NET. Yes, the book provides useful information. However, it's not enough details nor supported by example. Maybe it is sufficient for them and their team, but not for regular users.
If you want to learn ASP.NET, I highly recommend "ASP.NET Unleashed" by Stephen Walther. Stephen's book is a kind of complement of Matthew and Rob's book.
