Book Description
It is normally assumed that international security regimes such as the United Nations can reduce the risk of war by increasing transparency among adversarial nations. The more adversaries understand each other's intentions and capabilities, the thinking goes, the less likely they are to be led to war by miscalculations and unwarranted fears. But how is transparency provided, how does it actually work, and how effective is it in preserving or restoring peace? In Promoting Peace with Information, Dan Lindley provides the first scholarly answer to these important questions.
Lindley rigorously examines a wide range of cases, including U.N. peacekeeping operations in Cyprus, the Golan Heights, Namibia, and Cambodia; arms-control agreements, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty; and the historical example of the Concert of Europe, which sought to keep the peace following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815. Making nuanced arguments based on extensive use of primary sources, interviews, and field research, Lindley shows when transparency succeeds in promoting peace, and when it fails. His analysis reveals, for example, that it is surprisingly hard for U.N. buffer-zone monitors to increase transparency, yet U.N. nation-building missions have creatively used transparency to refute harmful rumors and foster democracy.
For scholars, Promoting Peace with Information is a major advance into the relatively uncharted intersection of institutionalism and security studies. For policymakers, its findings will lead to wiser peacekeeping, public diplomacy, and nation building.

Valid Conclusions, Original, Missed Important Other Works.......2007-08-01
Information Peacekeeping and Peacekeeping Intelligence are topics of great importance to me, and I have been writing about them since the mid-1990's, while also publishing several books on the topic and reading others, all easily found on Amazon and listed below. Hence I was most disappointed in the overly academic nature of the book.
I reduce it by one star because it does not focus on the transparency needed among predatory immoral corporations as well as covert operations by the United States and others that poison the well and retard possibilities for peace, and because while it is an original work and offers very valuable primary research in the form of numerous interviews, it completely missed the work done between the Brahimi Report and this book's publication.
The book discusses four kinds of transparency:
1) Cooperative (both formal and informal)
2) Ambient
3) Coerced
4) Unilateral (intelligence, confrontational, and proferred)
The author concludes that information is power and that the United Nations continues to be reluctant or unwilling to use this power (I would add that the US military has the same problem--commanders are spending 80% of their time on intelligence & information operations (I2O) but less than one percent of the staff and budget are assigned to this vital mission).
The author identifies the following impediments to UN success in information operations:
1) Staffing not there
2) Doctrine and procedures lacking
3) Bureacratic intertia
4) Continued fear of "intelligence" as evil instead of decision support
The author concludes that United Nations operations of all kinds could benefit from and be more effective if:
1) More information was collected and analyzed, and then shared
2) Transparency operations were an advanced form of presence beyond patrols and static monitoring--a pro-active form of UN operations
3) Strategic communications (the author appears unfamiliar with the term) are mounted against hate-mongering (the first stage of genocide).
The author focuses on information transparency, but does not appear to see budget transparency as one of the most important means of validating policies and beliefs. "It's not real until it's in the budget" is a phrase taught to me by the former custodian of all national security funds in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and I have come to the conclusion that transparency of budgets at all levels is the non-negotiable pre-condition for restoring the trust and engagement of all people in their own governance.
The author does recognize the excellent work published previously,
Peacekeeping and Public Information: Caught in the Crossfire (Cass Series on Peacekeeping, 5)
Below are books that complement this one and that are not, as best I can tell, drawn on in this work:
Intelligence Power in Peace and War
Intelligence Services in the Information Age (Studies in Intelligence Series)
Peacekeeping Intelligence: Emerging Concepts for the Future
Information Operations: All Information, All Languages, All the Time
Peacekeeping Intelligence New Players, Extended Boundaries (Studies in Intelligence)
The New Craft of Intelligence: Personal, Public, & Political--Citizen's Action Handbook for Fighting Terrorism, Genocide, Disease, Toxic Bombs, & Corruption
The following book, at $150, is grotesquely over-priced, but the content, should it ever be more ethically available, appears worthy:
Intelligence for Peace: The Role of Intelligence in Times of Peace (Cass Series on Peacekeeping, 5)
Readers may also wish to search online for:
VIRTUAL INTELLIGENCE: Conflict Avoidance and Resolution Through Information Peacekeeping as published by the US Institute of Peace online
PEACEKEEPING INTELLIGENCE: Leadership Digest 1.0
Information Peacekeeping: The Purest Form of War
I also understand that the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) is moving forward with concepts and doctrine for harmonizing the many Joint Military Analysis Centers that MajGen Patrick Cammaert, NL RN inspired during his tour as Military Advisor to the Secretary General. Separately, I am advancing an effort to engage 120 nations in a discussion of Multinational Information Sharing to be institutionalized through an Office of Information Sharing Treaties and Agreements within any diplomatic service. It is slow going, but this book is another helpful stone in the road to peace through information.

Book Description
The 1934 Minneapolis Teamsters Strike proved to be a pivotal event in 20th century American Labor History. The Teamsters challenged the muscle of big business, as well as the authority of local, state, and federal government, and in the process they changed the vary nature of labor relations in the U.S.
Customer Reviews:
Well researced, but............2005-04-29
I enjoyed this book which is well researched. The chapters titled "Voices" containing oral histories are a very nice insightful touch. Two things do strike me as odd. (1) Farrell Dobbs whose name is almost synonymous with this strike is barely mentioned. (2) Dan Tobin, who was General President of the IBT at the time, is referenced primarily through secondary sources. Did the author not pursue Tobin's papers with the Wisconsin State Historical Society?
Product Description
The 1934 strikes that built the industrial union movement in Minneapolis and helped pave the way for the CIO, recounted by a central leader of that battle. The first in a four-volume series on the class-struggle leadership of the strikes and organizing drives that transformed the Teamsters union in much of the Midwest into a fighting social movement and pointed the road toward independent labor political action.
Customer Reviews:
DON'T MOURN, ORGANIZE!!.......2006-05-20
THIS REVIEW IS ALSO BEING USED FOR TEAMSTER POWER WHICH IS A CONTINUATION OF THE STORY PRESENTED HERE. THE POLITICAL POINTS ARE VALID FOR BOTH BOOKS.
ORGANIZE WALMART! ORGANIZE THE SOUTH! These are the slogans which outline the tasks that the American labor movement, particularly the organized trade union movement under the AFL-CIO and the Change to Win Coalition, need to address. With those tasks in mind it was refreshing for this old militant to re-read Farrell Dobbs' analysis of the fight to organize the truckers in the 1930's. This volume, and an earlier one detailing the struggles to organize truckers in Minneapolis, are little handbooks for model labor organizing. Dobbs himself was instrumental in organizing the truckers of Minneapolis in the great strikes in that city in 1934 and as documented here the later, successful organizing of the over the road drivers in the Midwest which created the modern, powerful Teamsters International Union. He was, more importantly, a supporter of what later in the decade became the Socialist Workers Party- American section of the Trotsky-led Forth International.
Whatever else may be true about Dobbs this man could organize workers. Why? The last sentence in the previous paragraph gives the answer. In the modern labor movement it is not enough to be a militant on the picket line but one must also have a political approach to labor actions. With the merging of corporate and governmental interests on the labor question in the modern state militants better think politically. As the December, 2005 unsuccessful struggle of the transport workers in New York City demonstrated militants better know the enemy and his tactics well. Moreover, these days, unlike in the 1930's when it went without question by advanced workers, it is as important to know there is an enemy. On the other hand think what it would be like to have a political militant like Dobbs organizing the drivers of those 7000 trucks that Wal-Mart owns to distribute its merchandise. You get my drift. Read what he has to say carefully.
To even introduce this militant labor leader of the 1930's is to state the fundamental problem of today's labor leaders. They do not exist in the modern labor movement. Yes, there are militants out there in the rank and file but militant leaders are no longer produced and that is the rub. Unlike the strategy of independent political action which underlined Dobbs' work the strategy of today's labor leaders can be summed up in two words- class collaboration. That is a strategy of dependence by the labor movement on the good will of the `friends of labor', essentially the Democratic Party- not to fight for victory in the streets but by what at times amounts to parliamentary cretinism. Just start to organize Wal-Mart seriously or organize the South and militants will quickly see who their `friends' are.
The natural audience for this book are today's labor activists so the reviewer would draw attention to the following issues that Dobbs and his associates had to confront and which militants today will confront in any serious organizing efforts. (1)The role of the labor bureaucracy in limiting the scope of struggle. (2) The role of governmental mediators, courts, legislation and the above-mentioned `friends of labor' in curtailing the struggle. (3) The role of scabs and others, including government troops, who will try to break the up the struggle. On the positive side- the following should be noted; have your own publicity organ to get out your message; organize other labor and pro-labor sources to assist in strike action; anticipate that governmental and corporate sources will try to `freeze' workers out so have your own transport, commissary and medical operations. Finally, in the words of the old Wobblie song by Joe Hill- "Don't Mourn, Organize!!
A welcome and recommended addition .......2004-12-05
Farrell Dobbs was a coal-yard worker and one of the central leaders of the 1934 strikes when in his twenties. Some forty years later Dobbs was the national secretory of the Socialist Workers Party and wrote down an account of his experiences working in the coal yards and becoming involved in unionist movement organizing the drive to establish Teamsters Local 574 and the rise of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) as an effective nation-wide instrument to better working conditions for men and women like himself. Teamster Rebellion is Dobbs account of the hard-fought strike actions which were often all out battles with law enforcement and hired thugs operating as strike breakers in the employ of the exploitative company owners and such big-business fronts as Citizen Alliance. Teamster Rebellion is a welcome and recommended addition to academic and community library American Labor History collections.

This Book Could Change Your Life.......2003-07-07
In rereading this book I was struck by what a wonderful thing it was that these rank and file workers were able to change history by creating, out of their struggle, an example of revolutionary unionism. It was wonderful for them and is wonderful for us, because it shows what we can do today. This book also tells the story of how Farrell Dobbs learned that he could trust in both the fighting capacity of the working class and the leadership capabilities of its vanguard. Through powerful examples Dobbs describes the dog-eat-dog viciousness of capitalism and contrasts it with the desire on the part of young fighters to break through the backstabbing and open up a road to workers' solidarity. This book could change your life. Amazon may list this book as unavailable from time to time, but it's always available from the Pathfinder z store. Click on "new and used" at the top of the page.
a must for any union fighter.......2002-07-08
Dobbs, a leader of the 1934 Minneapolis Teamster strike, which became a citywide general strike, tells its story. The battles with the companies, cops, strike breakers, and their hangers-on are told with masterful effect. It also shows the rising industrial unions as organizations of working-class struggle, taking on the employers and its government. But the real gem at the heart of this tale is how the unfolding struggle transformed ordinary workers, including Dobbs himself, into extraordinary fighters, thinkers, and revolutionary leaders.

Ever spent time in the Navy? You MUST have this book!.......1999-05-07
When this book first came out, I ordered it immediately. Jeff's humor has been depicted in the pages of Navy Times for years and I had to have the collection. His humor targets all groups and aspects of life. Some people have taken offense at his stabs at their "interest group"(i.e. Coast Guardsmen and Reservists, of which I am one now) but I assure you that their feelings are only due to their lack of ability to look at themselves and laugh. I had the pleasure of serving briefly with Jeff and found him to be one of the finest officers and people I have ever come in contact with. I agree with the previous reviewer in that this should be required reading for anyone in the maritime service - it will help you look at the lighter side of the BS and drudgery. I will DEFINITELY be buying his second book - "The Rest of Broadside".
Required reading for Navy and Marine Corps Personnel!.......1998-08-23
Jeff Bacon is no stranger to Navy and Marine Corps personnel. His cartoon has amused members of the sea services for years. No one within these communities is safe from his witty and humorous barbs. It's like he has a direct line into the minds of the service men and women that he portrays and that he is speaking for you as he takes a jab at others. And when you seem to be the recipient of his latest insightful commentary on some absurd aspect of life in the military you just cannot get mad. I read this book years ago and still catch myself laughing out loud as one of his cartoons pops into my mind. For anyone who has served in the Navy or Marine Corps I would make this required reading. I sincerely hope that Jeff Bacon will bring us more volumes of his unique humor.
Book Description
David Cairns--winner of the Whitbread Biography Award and the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction--has spent his life immersed in Mozart's music, both as a performer and as a listener. This intimate biography sheds new and important light on the composer by placing his operas in the context of his life and his complete musical output. Mozart's unusual childhood as a musical prodigy touring Europe as a performer from an early age is well known. But even more remarkable is that the genius grew up to produce works of increasing maturity and originality. Cairns unravels the many myths surrounding Mozart to reveal the opinionated, passionate, and exceptionally intelligent man behind the legend.
Cairns shows that familiarity with the operas can transform our perception of Mozart's art. He demonstrates that the composer's approach to composition was that of a consummate dramatist. Using the operas as his guide, he traces the steady deepening of Mozart's musical style from his beginnings as a child prodigy, through his coming of age with, in Cairns's opinion, the most Romantic and forward-looking of all Mozart's operas, Idomeneo. He discusses Mozart's later genius as displayed in the three comic operas The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, and in The Magic Flute, the final and greatest triumph of his career.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and informative.......2006-08-26
Cairns does a great job revealing all sorts of detail about each opera while developing some very compelling themes across operas. He is a very accessible and interesting writer, who combines research, the music, and the biographical tidbits all very well. I really recommend this book.

The New Grove Guide to Verdi and His Operas (New Grove Operas)
ASIN: 0195313186 |
Book Description
Each entry in this New Grove series of composers and their operas is based on articles in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, that feature information on the lives of individual composers, their works, their librettists and interpreters, and the places where they performed. These unique books compile the meticulously researched articles into organized narratives, designed to make finding information as easy as possible without sacrificing readability. Each volume is completely up-to-date, and includes a suggested listening guide and an eight-page glossy insert containing relevant illustrations. Each volume is a must-own for lovers of opera and classical music. One of the best known and most admired figures in European music was Wolfgang Amade Mozart. His short but colorful life is of enduring interest, and his works remain central to the repertories of classical music. This book gives a concise and scholarly account of Mozart's activities as a composer of operas. It includes a concise biography, orientated towards the operas; an essay on Mozart's operatic contribution and style, and the antecedents to his operas; a separate synopsis and historical account of each opera; and three essays which bind into narrative form the dictionary entries on librettists, interpreters, and venues. There is a new introduction, a glossary of relevant terms, a list of operatic roles, and a guide to listening.

Although the material in this useful new volume is culled from the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, there is no sense of dry, academic detachment. The "Interpreters" section, for example, concentrates on singers and conductors who created the canonical operas, and the juxtapositions of repertory are fascinating.
Many readers will first be drawn to the excellent synopses of the operas (including the early, unfamiliar works). Julian Rushton's contributions are exemplary. He manages to cover the sprawling plot of The Magic Flute with economy yet still find room to make an interpretive point about the Papageno-Papagena duet and address the issue of antifeminism in this work. His notes on Cosi fan tutte don't neglect the touchy subject of how the opera is supposed to end. Rushton acknowledges the difficulty of ordering the scenes in Act III of The Marriage of Figaro while still keeping the plot foremost.
The book includes a glossary (which, however, lacks an entry for buffo), an index to names of roles, and a few musical examples. Readers will want much more discussion of the performance histories of the works, but will not otherwise be disappointed. The series also includes volumes on Wagner, Puccini, and Verdi. --William R. Braun

Book Description
African Americans have experienced life under the rule of law in quite different contexts from those of whites, and they have written about those differences in poems, songs, stories, autobiographies, novels, and memoirs. This book examines the tradition of American law as it appears in African American literary life, from pre-Revolutionary murder trials to gangsta rap. The experience, and the critique it produces, changes our pictures of both American law and African American literature.
This study reads the already canonical works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century black literature in the context of their responses to and critiques of American legal history. At the same time, it examines little known texts of African American life, from the urban humor of James D. Corrothers, through the early political essays of Chester Himes, to the adventures of black comic book heroes like Steel, Wise Son, and Xero. These are contextualized within specific legislation and case law, from the slave laws of early Virginia to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, from the case of Phillis and Mark in 1755 to the Simpson trials of the mid 1990s.
Finally, the legal texts presented are themselves critiqued by the fictions and legal analyses of the African Americans who lived out their implications in their daily lives. Through a positing of the legal and cultural concepts of privacy, property, identity, desire and citizenship, and the romantic ideals of authenticity, irony, and innocence, Suggs is able to show how our understanding of American law should be influenced by African American conceptions of it as depicted through literature.
This book will appeal to students and scholars of literary and cultural studies, law and literature, American history, as well as to scholars of African American literature and culture.
Jon-Christian Suggs is Professor of English, John Jay College, City University of New York.

A Must Read!.......2007-09-15
Successful Christian Television: Make Your Media Ministry a Reality
First of all, I would like to personally thank Phil Cooke for taking the time to write this book, and to share his wealth of experience and expertise on running a successful television ministry. I found his book full of pragmatic wisdom and insights. In essence, it gave me an accelerated perspective into how to grow and manage a sustainable broadcast ministry in America. I highly recommend this book to every Christian who has a burning desire to learn how to leverage on the medium of broadcast to preach the Gospel of Jesus and to declare His finished work on the cross beyond the walls of the local church. Thanks Phil, you have been a blessing to our international television ministry.

Book Description
Japan is the world power in video games, producing the most popular video hardware and software in the world that has won countless fans worldwide. Now these fans can take a look at the making of their favorite games in Japanese Game Graphics, which goes behind-the-scenes of the most-talked about and popular titles released for Playstation 2 and other consumer videogame hardware. Each of the 26 games covered (including Final Fantasy X2, Soulcalibur 2, and Oni Musha 2) gets its own fully illustrated chapter to describe the game and take readers beyond what is seen on the screen. The artists, illustrators, and creators of each game are extensively interviewed and they themselves describe what is unique about their game, what challenges they had to overcome to create the game, and how the characters and stories were created. They also describe what software and digital techniques (often invented especially for the game) were used to create the look and feel of each game and game world.

Better than it looks!.......2006-01-13
From the cover I expected a fluffy rehash of game desktop wallpapers. Instead, it's packed with lots of great, technical information about the creation of game graphics! Highly recommended for aspiring 3d artists.
Good Intro to Eastern Games Genre.......2005-10-10
I'd probably give this 4 and a half stars out of five but rounded up. I took a punt on it and am pleased i did.
In contrast to the previous poster i think it's a more interesting purchase than Art of Game Worlds (but only if you have some interest in Max/Maya and the process of game-making.)
I'm quite unfamiliar with Japanese games (don't have a PS2) and maybe because of this the artwork seemd quite fresh and exotic to me, more so than many games developed in the US/UK/Australia etc.
The quality of the artwork throughout is very high..this book has serious eyecandy value as well as being an interesting read.
Recommended.
Great imagery, nice overall.......2005-08-15
This book is very well presented, and makes a nice coffee table type addition to anyones collection. The art is great and varied, and the mixture of rendered shots, in-progress shots, concept graphics and screenshots of the art being produced in the various applications is very nice.
The information contained in the book is insightful, and gives many tips and snippets of how the artists and animators achieved certain effects, or managed to come up with the final result. There is actually more information than you would expect, but don't expect to be able to use this book as a guide to producing your own graphics :).
The only niggle I have is that some of the writing (which I presume has been translated from japanese) is very difficult to follow, and on occasion doesn't make much sense :) An example of this is (pg. 106) -start paragraph- "However, perfect drawings were not created right away. CG and the overall design were both created by mutually adjusting the forms. Of course, during the presentation stage, the motions were considered and the model was shown, The model that consisted of visual motions was ehibited and the technically difficult parts were described." -end paragraph-
I also purchased 'The art of game worlds' which I prefer to 'Japanese Game Graphics', although it is less technical.
