Book Description
Despite the fact that most parents are employed, how work affects the lives and well-being of parents and their children remains relatively unexplored. Drawing on a recent study of 500 dual-career families in 8 communities across the U.S., this book focuses on how families achieve or fail to attain work-life balance. With its rich diversity of data, findings, and commentary from an interdisciplinary group of scholars, the book provides a valuable resource for academics, policy makers, and working parents.

Rough Trade.......2004-03-01
This is a fascinating book on several levels. The pictures document a classic gay aethestic that survives today, and the text douments what was really behind it.
"Rough Trade" is a gay term that dates back to the 19th Century, and was a term coined by artistocratic gay males whose sexual tastes were toward physically robust, crude working class men and boys. To the effete artistocrats with their soft bodies and socialization, the pure physical lust and crude masculinity of the simple farm boy or laborer was the ultimate sexual delight. The 'sin' of flouting class differences and having wild sex with your so-called 'inferiors' doubled the pleasure for these men.
None other than Oscar Wilde himself described this indulgence as 'feasting with panthers'. It is often forgotten that the public outrage to his sexual activities was as much about his flouting of class barriers as his homosexuality. Wilde's indiscretions on BOTH sides of the class barrier, constantly endulging himself with adolescent street boys, and flouting a Viscount who warned Wilde repeatedly to stop diddling his son.
This book definately provides a peak into the era before gay sexual liberation and gay identity politics. What is often misinterpreted as homophobia is in reality resentment of the masses toiling 12 hour a day for starvation wages so the sons of aristocrats could flit around and endulge the boredom of their idleness by seducing economically desperate working class males.
a worthy addition to any gay man's collection.......2000-01-14
The price is a bit dear but worth it for those interested in pre war gay Britain. Gives insights into a very Edwardian gay couple and as a bonus lots of info about gay men in Britain and where and how they connected in the years before World War 2. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it.

Love and Money.......2004-09-15
Sepia Davis is a wealthy woman and has worked hard to maintain a level head, but officer Paul Healy doesn't think so. Paul believes Sepia is a snob and just out seeking adventure when she goes on a ride along with him, but when Sepia is in danger because of something she witnessed Paul runs to her rescue and is determined to protect her at all cost.
It's a thin line.......2004-07-03
A CLASS APART is a clash of two very different individuals over
lifestyles, views, and emotions. Police officer Paul Healy, from the
working class city of Crawford is focused on becoming a homicide
detective. Sepia Davis, from the more affluent neighboring city of
Compton, was born with the proverbial silver spoon, and for the most
part is a socialite. Sepia is a also an award winning Romance writer,
but is currently writing a mystery which requires assistance from the
local police department.
Paul is the officer assigned to assist Sepia in her research, and from
their initial meeting things do not bode well. Paul's ex-wife left him
and has since remarried someone in Compton who is more class-worthy.
This is one of the reasons Paul's resentment for Sepia and what she
represents is high. But, this attitude could jeopardize all he has
worked to achieve. Sepia is a witness in a high profile killing, her
safety, to Paul's dismay, becomes another part of his assignment and
it increases the tension between them. But this added tension has
nothing to do with his assignment or her book. When Sepia's life is
threatened Paul finally admits there is something about this woman that
calls to him in the most elemental way; but will he lower his
resentment and listen?
Angela Winters has given readers a wonderful who-dun-it, surrounded by
issues which emphasize the pitfalls of stereotyping and show that love
is not classified. Because of the subtle way she presents her lessons
in humanity, this is more than just a quick, entertaining read.

Writing with the low-key stylishness his subject deserves, British academic Graham McCann pays tribute to the working-class Englishman who became "a democratic symbol of gentlemanly grace" to moviegoers worldwide. Aptly subtitled "A Class Apart," the book sympathetically depicts Archie Leach--born into poverty, his mother committed to an asylum when he was nine--reinventing himself as Cary Grant, whose debonair screen persona showed no signs of these difficult origins. A decorous account of Grant's private life (McCann dismisses talk of bisexuality as mere rumor) accompanies cogent descriptions of his performances.
Customer Reviews:
The Finest Estimate of an Inestimable Performer.......2007-02-24
This book would doubtless be better known, and better publicized, were it not published by a reputable university press. Don't mislead yourself, however. There's nothing tedious about McCann's book, which is very well written and measured in its judgments. Those wanting gossip and sensationalism should look elsewhere. Even those who know Grant's background and career will learn new things here. In a word: a splendid interpretation of an insidpensable performer.
The best biography on Cary Garnt I've read.......2006-04-20
It's detailed and well sourced and actually has quotes from people who actually knew him and lived through these events with the man. I felt like I actually had insight to the man rather than the image and the decades of gossip which seems to have been taken as fact by most of the other Cary Garnt biographers. He tells Cary Grant's story respectfully, but doesnt white wash the facts. The anecdotes as told by Cary's friends are fascinting, sometimes hilariously funny and often sad. He approaches the gossip as a researcher would and doesnt try to speculate or parse subjects to support hiw own personal oint of view or agenda.
This is the third biography I've read about Cary Garnt, and compared to the other very light offerings this was by far the best and most comprehensive. I learned for example that Cary Grant was not only a great charmer, but a shrewd businessman who consistently outwitted the studio bosses at every turn. I enjoyed learning about his incredible sense of honor which often times landed him in hot water and led to many of the vindictive rumors we are still hearing today. He hated the gossip columnists at the time and was embroiled in a very long and bitter battle with the likes of Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons, who he once told to mind her GD business. Got to love the guy.
Great book.
Movie star. Quick, who do you think of? Cary Grant........2004-10-21
Especially if your over 50. He looked, played & acted as the movie star he was. Women loved him. Men would have loved to be him. He was more often seduced than the seducer which was part of his charm. He never forgot who he was & where he came from: Archie Leech from Bristol, England. He was amiable & apolitical yet had a streak of independence & courage that led him to be one of the first stars to break with the studio system. That allowed him to be a free agent & pick the movies he wanted to do. It didn't always work out. Sometimes, the movies stank & he was the best thing in them. But most of his movies were money makers & that was really the only thing that counted. He was admired for his independence. He could be difficult to work with but was not tempermental. He was a professional working to perfect his craft as he liked to put it. This obsession with perfection did not work with the women he loved & he left four failed marriages in his wake. This failing apparently never occurred to him.
He didn't have to be pushed into old man roles & retired on his own terms. A class act.
Over-Detailed And Difficult To Stick With.......2003-12-27
I wish I could say I wasn't disappointed in this book, since I was looking forward to a well-researched and engrossing book on a screen legend. However, I had to force myself to finish reading it and came away with very little enjoyment and appreciation for the subject. Very nearly ONE THIRD of the book (the latter portion) is not textual biography, but a glossary, filmography and voluminous footnote after footnote after footnote of data supporting the main body (2/3) of the book. Far too many distracting footnotes referenced on virtually every page of the book were significantly annoying, and in many instances a point was belabored ad infinitum. Many key points of detail and anecdotes relating to admired, classic CG movies weren't present, while others were - sorry - rather beaten to death. Supporting photographs were limited and failed to include more than good shots of the subject at a small, select time of his life. I expected a more linear, cohesive, colloquial narrative unencumbered by redundent grammatical 'precision.' The book was obviously well-researched, but extreme detail does not always do the subject or the audience justice.
THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ ON CARY GRANT!.......2002-01-27
If you want to find out everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - about Cary Grant then this is the book for you. All other books, including the latest biog, are glitzy and frothy and tell you nothing you hadn't already read if you are a big fan. Also some are not as revelationary as they would like to think.
If you are a serious fan then you can't beat this book.

Book Description
Lucy Beresford knows her middle-class family thinks she's married beneath her when she gets together with Rob. He's gorgeous, he's thoughtful, he's clever—but he's undeniably working class. Gradually the differences between Rob and Lucy begin to loom large, as they argue over how the house should be decorated, how the children should be educated, and whether the evening meal should be called "dinner" or "tea." In this funny, contentious, and brilliantly observed novel, Diana Appleyard scratches the surface to reveal the petty snobberies that still exist in most of us.

Such a wonderful book, I read it twice........2005-12-11
A musicology professor of mine recommended I use this book in a presentation I gave on aesthetics. I compared Attali's approach to that of Benjamin and Adorno and found myself highlighting and smiling and nodding. I found this book to be so brilliant and hopeful (where Adorno was so pessimistic) that I used it again in a presentation for another graduate musicology seminar.
If you don't like to read books that use complex sentences and multi-syllabic words, you should not be in higher education in the first place. Attali makes arguments that may seem outlandish, but with more thought and consideration, prove to be intelligent, fresh, and seemingly common sense.
A must read.........2000-12-22
... because it is so outrageous to be brilliantly thought provoking. Sometimes I think he is out to lunch and I am not confident that he understands everything he wrote. (or maybe the translation is not right.) Still, the mythology he presents is detailed and well developed and whether you agree with it or not, is fascinating.
There is a lot of coverage of European classical music in terms of "Who is paying whom" as well as the current recording industry. He also gets some things wrong, such as his coverage of Free Jazz (Carly Bley is black?), to which he nevertheless is sympathetic towards.
Therefore, I don't know how much you can trust his conclusions, but at the same time it gets the reader's mind to consider all sorts of new facets, and that is why this book is great.

Not Literary {wind}.......2000-11-23
Sometimes lazy people like to use phrases like "literary{wind} " to justify their inability to understand difficult topics, or to cover for their own, lacking, vocabularies. The foregoing review did just that. The fact is, sometimes precise thought demands precise language.
Anyway, this book provides valuable insight into the relationship of fringe art/music, and the future of society. Attali postulates that society is founded upon the idea that bad noise must be subverted. Therefore, all forces effecting social change, at some time, have been subverted. Given time though, they find their way into society by way of, here, music, and begin to cause change.
This is a very interesting and well conceived book. A great read for philosophy student and musician alike. It puts a new spin on the effect of music on culture, and the reciprocal relationship between art and society. Good stuff.
In closing, and in response to the previous reviewer, "college isn't taken as seriously as it once was" simply because the hallowed halls are clogged with students who readily dismiss works of sound thought because they don't like having to look up words or work for their own enlightenment.ENDs
Literary Masturbation.......1999-04-06
This text was a required reading for a college course I took, and it basically summarizes why college isn't taken as seriously as it once was. This purely indulgent, pretentious work ruins any chance of an actual point with jumbled phrases such as "...neither an autonomous activity nor an automatic indicator of the economic infrastructure..." Personally, this is thoroughly unreadable and unenjoyable; it was much more of a chore to get through than it was worth. Attali needs to quit with the literary masturbation and realize that while having a large vocabulary is admirable, he should perhaps learn to "eschew obfuscation", pun fully intended.

Book Description
After a seven year run that has seen love, death, violence and college, the cult phenomenon Buffy the Vampire Slayer has finally reached its close.
Adhering to Virgin's successful programme guide format and the style of previous editions, Slayer: The Last Days of Sunnydale contains a complete episode-by-episode guide to the final season – Season Seven – with each episode broken down into recurring categories to draw attention to details that viewers might have missed. Bestselling author Keith Topping analyses the themes of the show, unearths pop culture and soundtrack information, serves up the best lines of dialogue, exposes continuity errors, while still managing to analyse the show's subtext and serious issues. In addition, there are sections on the first six seasons, the extensive media coverage of the series finale, the Internet realm of Buffy and what happens next in the Buffy-verse – all in a style that captures the unique humour of the show.
Vampires, violence, passion, angst and humour – Slayer: The Last Days of Sunnydale is the essential guide to the end of a teen phenomenon.

OK, but kind of critical.......2004-08-25
I really enjoyed this book, yet I found some of the author's opinions getting in the way, and he got some of the details mixed up in the series summary up to season seven in the beginning of the book. The "Did You Know?" sections were awesome and offered a lot of facts about the cast and crew that I had never known before. Some of the critique was kind of harsh, but that's because I thought season seven was extremely good. This book is worthy of 4 stars, but I've read other BtVS books that are much better.I really liked the fact that the author not only gave episode summaries, but also told the reader what was happening at the time the episode aired(Ex. interviews that the cast were involved in,etc.). If you're looking for a book that offers summaries, fun facts, and critique then this book in for you!
Excellent.......2004-07-13
Keith Topping does an excellent job of reviewing Season 7 of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I thoroughly enjoyed reading this guide to the final season of this series.
He has researched the subject very thoroughly and included many quotes from writers and actors. This guide is unbiased and is very consistent with the views that Joss Whedon has expressed in his interviews.
I highly recommend that you buy "Slayer: The Last Days of Sunnydale" instead of the Watcher's Guide. The research is much more thorough and Keith Topping's interpretation of the show is much less biased.

I have to agree with the majority who post about this book that the book is an impressive bricolage of data about all aspects of the application. Certainly having some computer background helped me to understand some technically dense ideas about the various characteristics of Access 2000, but the problem is if you're not a database/computer science person, this book doesn't have enough meaningful examples or interpretation to help you learn. This book is NOT for someone who wants to learn how to develop an Access 2000 Database, and more like a good overview for someone who already is an established database hewer. (Which I suppose is fair since the book posits itself as advanced...)
No a good book.......2005-08-02
This book is not a good book. If you want to learn MS access, stay away from this one. With more than 1000 pages without organization. The author better is a fiction writer than a technical writer.
A disappointment.......2003-06-13
For such a big book, I expected more. I have a decent amount of computer experience, although I had none with Access. The book starts out doing a fairly good job of introducing the reader to the more mundane uses of the program. But I soon realized that if I wanted to put together some more creative applications, I would need to combine Access with structured query language (SQL) and some Visual Basic (VBA) programming.
For instance, I wanted to put together a custom data base for keeping track of my expenditures, and summarize the data in a specific format. I've programmed before - back in the ancient days of mainframes - and looked forward to the challenge of learning something new. And this book contains chapters on SQL and VBA - which is one of the reasons I bought it. But they turned out to be virtually useless. For instance, the book gives you examples of how to use SQL to write very specific kinds of queries, and how to use VBA for very specific programming routines. But there's no explanation of the logic or the programming "grammar" behind the examples, so you can't generalize to create your own queries or routines. Unless your needs happen to coincide with the examples Jennings sees fit to give you, you're fresh out of luck. Oh, yes, he does give you lots of tables of functions and expressions and god-all-knows what else. But they are virtually useless out of context. It's like giving someone a dictionary of the English language, but no grammar book, and then expecting them to learn how to converse.
The sample data base also got a little old after a while. Every example in the book is based on it. I can appreciate that, for the one-foot-in-front-of-the-other types, it might be a teaching technique that works well. But personally, I don't want to spend a lot of time working with someone else's data base; I want to do my own.
This book has been helpful in the sense that it made me realize how much there is to learn to use Access' full potential -- and that I'd better start looking for a much better book to do it with!
No better than mediocre as a reference.......2003-05-15
From my perspective, someone with plenty of computing experience but not much Access knowledge, this book is well below par.
I was hoping for a reference volume that I could quickly dip into to answer questions I have when I am using Access at work. However this book isn't much good at all as a reference. The main problem is the format, it is set out as lessons which you follow step by step. Which is fine if you want to do exactly what they are describing. But if you want to leave the authors path to do something slightly different forget it.
The other thing is that this book is over 1200 pages long. It definitely doesn't need to be that long, lots of the words are completely redundant unless this is your first time using a computer.
Here's an example, picked at random:
'Position the mouse pointer over the copied option group so that the pointer becomes a hand symbol. Hold down the mouse button and drag the option group to a new position.'
With an editor this might have read:
'Drag the copied option group to a new position.'
I bought this because I hadn't been particularly impressed with Access Database Design & Programming, published by O'Reilly, which I had used in the past. I don't have the O'Reilly book anymore, so I can't directly compare. However as I remember my problem with it was that it was too focussed on DB design theory. However if it was only half as good as the books that O'Reilly usually put out it would still definitely be worth a look before buying this one.
OK for ?.......2002-12-10
This book is OK for someone who has never used a database before, but for someone who just needs some basic information on how to total fields it's completly useless.
They have a sample database that you are supposed to work with, but I don't have that kind of time at my job to be expermenting with databases when I'm supposed to be producing data.
