          Book Description

With the United States on the way to becoming an almost completely urban nation, the financing of cities has become an issue of great urgency; put simply, American cities do not have enough money. This book examines the role of local fiscal policies and fiscal politics in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America.

            Book Description

The state of Kerala in southern India is notable for the ways in which lower-class mobilization and state intervention have combined to create one of the most successful cases of social and redistributive development in the Third World. In contrast to predictions that labor militancy in developing countries threatens to overload fledgling democratic institutions and derail economic growth, The Labor of Development shows that the political and economic inclusion of industrial and agricultural workers in Kerala set the stage for a democratically negotiated capitalist transformation.

When compared to the other Indian states, Kerala's departure from the national pattern is tied to its history of social movements and highlights the significance of understanding sub-national patterns of democratic consolidation and state building. The case of Kerala provides important theoretical insights into the circumstances under which the expansion of political and social citizenship can become the basis for managing economic change. Using examples from agriculture, industry, and the informal sector, Patrick Heller examines the institutional and political dynamics through which the demands of organized labor and the imperatives of capitalist growth have evolved from a period of open conflict and stagnation to one of class compromise. He also demonstrates that the Kerala model has broad ramifications for understanding the relationship between substantive democracy and market economies in low-income countries.

              Book Description

Adapted in part from the Opportunity in America series of policy briefs, this volume focuses on social and economic mobility in the United States. The authors find that class or family background has a strong effect on individual success. They examine the possible reasons for this relationship, how it has changed over the past century, and the role of the economy, the welfare system, and education in opening up opportunities for the less fortunate.

                Book Description

What is the relation between social class and social justice? This is currently a matter of public as well as academic controversy. While nobody would deny that the distribution of rewards in industrial societies is unequal, there is sharp disagreement about whether this inequality can be justified. Some see existing patterns of social mobility as evidence of inequality of opportunity. Others regard them as meritocratic, simply reflecting the distribution of abilities among the population. This fascinating, interdisciplinary study brings together recent developments in normative thinking about social justice with new empirical findings about educational attainment and social mobility. The result is a path-breaking contribution to our thinking about issues of class and justice, one that will be of interest to both sociologists and political theorists for many years to come.

                  Book Description

Globalization, argue the contributors to this book, has remarkably accelerated social and economic change in modern societies. One such change is manifested in the world of work and careers. This book explores whether the forces of globalization affect the erosion of standard career patterns of mid-career men in twelve OECD countries. Overwhelming evidence against the `individualization of inequality' thesis is provided - it is argued that equality remains largely stratified by factors such as occupational class and educational level, and in some countries has even grown over time.

The contributors illustrate that globalization appears to have influenced the rise of `patchwork' careers in countries where workers have been increasingly less protected by institutional configurations. These countries include Denmark, Mexico, The Netherlands, the UK and the US, as well as post-socialistic countries such as Hungary, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Interestingly, there is no evidence that men's careers have become more erratic in Italy, Spain, Sweden or Germany. Nation-specific institutions, such as welfare regimes, education and training systems and employment relations remain key factors impacting on job mobility patterns.

Using empirical evidence to demonstrate how different policy approaches impact on the employment careers of individuals, this book will be invaluable to academics, students, researchers, practitioners and policymakers seeking to understand the effects of international social change on national contexts.

                    Book Description

The book focuses on the consequences of industrial mobility for optimal public policy. A theoretical framework is introduced: There are several locations with independent governments, industries differ in mobility, and there are local markets for some resources (for instance, labour). The framework allows to explain that governments favour mobile industries in comparison to local immobile industries. Several determinants of industrial policy in favour of mobile industries are considered: Supply of local resources, demand for outputs, asymmetries between industries and locations, emissions, labour mobility, etc. Moreover, it is discussed how industrial policy in favour of mobile industries translates into environmental policy and social policy. The approach and the results are new, the methods are basic.

I love this music and the way Perlman played it. I recently bought this sheet music assuming that it is edited by Perlman since the cover page has "For Itzhak Perlman" on it and somewhere on the website says "by Itzhak Perlman". I was very disappointed to find out that the violin part was not edited, not by Perlman, not by anybody. No fingerings. No bowing. Am I missing something?

No longer just for kids and fanatics, video games have been growing in sophistication and popularity with each passing year and their cultural reach is expanding too - spawning magazines, international conferences, university courses, and blockbuster movies. In Gamers, noted writers, artists, scholars, poets, and programmers talk about what gaming means to them and discuss the growing impact of video games on fashion, fiction, film, and music. Contributors include Richard Powers, Colson Whitehead, Shelley Jackson, Matthew Sharpe, Marc Nesbitt, Daniel Nester, Whitney Pastorek, and Jim Andrews. Essays feature a glittering mix of topics from the esoteric to the purely entertaining: gender identity in relation to gaming, video golf as a meditative exercise, Ms. Pacman versus The Sims, the similarities between writing fiction and programming, the confessions of a video poker junkie, and much more in this witty, wide-screen look at how video games are becoming part of the cultural landscape.

Man, I have read this book beginning to end maybe 10 times.
It is addictive. It reads like a great novel starting with the king stepping down and the princes fighting for the crown.

A must read for comedy addicts and fans of late night

The movie was mildly entertaining, so I decided to check the book out. However, I found myself losing interest in the book quite fast.

The ending result is anti-climatic, of course, since we all know the result of the late-night battle.

The behind the scenes details weren't all that compelling. Just a bunch of head strong, egotistical executives fighting over who they thought deserved Carson's seat as the King of Latenight.

The only insightful part of the book to me was learning how Conan O'brien has won the Late Night show. I had always wondered how such a relative unknown had won the part.

It was a heck of a battle, and some folks didn't exactly play fair. Letterman, by far the more deserving of the "King of Late Night" crown following Carson's unceremonious ousting, tried to win by being the best at what he does. Leno's camp won by using strongarm tactics, bullying, and underhandedness. Even Leno's show "borrows" rather heavily from Dave's old show, partly because his people lured Letterman's chief writers to their side. Leno may be a decent guy (I hear), but his management quite literally stole The Tonight Show for him. Dave was hoping to be let in through the front door, but Leno's camp broke in through a window. The companion HBO movie treatment of this book is also a very entertaining and enlightening dramatization of the basics of this ordeal.

I am a huge Letterman fan and thought Bill Carter spent too much time in this book focusing on Jay Leno.Ive re-read it a couple of times and came up with the same conclusion. The book was far better than that rediculous movie.

                                              Book Description

The field of machine vision has expanded extensively since the First Edition of Machine Vision was published by Academic Press in 1990. As a result, this Second Edition contains significant amounts of new material on artificial neural networks, mathematical morphology, motion, invariance, texture analysis, x-ray inspection, and foreign object detection. Intermediate level vision is examined in depth (especially Hough transforms), and automated visual inspectionis discussed. The author takes care to consider theoretical aspects as well as practical applications, including perspective invariants and robust statistics. Written in a user-friendly style and full of up-to-date methods, Machine Vision, Second Edition will be an essential volume for students and professionals in the field.

                                              Key Features
                                              * Gives considerable emphasis to robust analysis of images to demonstrate how problems of occlusion, noise, distortion, and variability may be overcome
                                              * Introduces Hough transforms as an integral part of the text and shows how they may be applied in a variety of situations
                                              * Presents the topic of robust statistics non-mathematically in the context of vision algorithms
                                              * Considers the role of neural networks in machine vision
                                              * Shows how the concepts of perspective invariance provide basic strategies for 2-D and 3-D vision
                                              * Studies image transformations and the prespective n-point problem systematically to clarify how interpretation may proceed in various geometrical situations
                                              * Pays special attention to the detection of defects, foreign objects, and real-time implementation hardware in consideration of automated visual inspection

4 out of 5 stars Good survey of specific machine vision techniques.......2006-06-17

To begin with, the latest edition of this book was published in 2004, so all reviews dated earlier than that are referring to a previous edition. This book is a good one on issues and algorithms as they pertain to machine vision versus general computer vision. If you want a good general textbook on computer vision try "Computer Vision" by Linda Shapiro. It has all of the background material and a firm foundation in all of the topics you would expect in a course on computer vision. This book also has a section on introductory computer vision topics, I just don't think it is as clear and as comprehensive as Shapiro's book, especially for students.

However, if you want an excellent treatment of the kinds of problems specific to machine vision - the detection of lines, holes, corners, circles, elipses, and polygons, for example, along with specific algorithm details, this book is very good. It also has good sections on pattern matching, motion estimation, and 3D machine vision. I would recommend it especially for those individuals who are already familiar with the basics of computer vision and would like a book on algorithms for solving specific problems in machine vision. I notice that Amazon only shows the table of contents for the previous edition, so I show the table of contents for the new edition next:

5 out of 5 stars Solid Foundation to computer Vision.......2002-02-20

First of all I like this book very much. This book provides a solid and concrete foundation to computer vision from engineering point of view. The basic issues are treated very well in the conceptual and practical levels (e.g. edge detection). I came from a photogrammetry background, which means that the geometric aspects are very dominant in my thinking, and this book emphasize many geometric concepts in computer vision specially the treatment of Hough Transform as a main theme in the book. I recommend this book to the practitioners in spatial sciences (GIS, Remote sensing, Photogrammetry, etc) as well as the general community of computer vision.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2001-08-04

Covers many aspects of vision, from basic image processing through high level scene analysis. It doesn't always go down to the nitty-gritty source code level for every topic, but it does provide the direction to handle most every common machine vision problem. Of the ten or so general machine vision books on my easy-access shelf, this is the one I seem to pull down the most.

4 out of 5 stars Good structured reference, very useful.......2000-06-06

A very clearly structured book which is useful as a reference. Covers a lot of subjects (filtering, detection of shapes [lines, circles, holes and more], pattern matching/recognition, motion, invariants, ...), including the implementation aspects (hard/software). The chapters sometimes do not go much into deep but provide further references. Recommended book!
