Book Description
Daniel A. Smith exposes the truth about the American tax revolt. Contrary to conventional wisdom, recent ballot initiatives to limit state taxes have not been the result of a groundswell of public outrage; rather, they have been carefully orchestrated from the top down by professional tax crusaders: political entrepreneurs with their own mission.
These faux populist initiatives--in contrast to genuine grassroots movements--involve minimal citizen participation. Instead, the tax crusaders hire public relations firms and use special interest groups to do the legwork and influence public opinion. Although they successfully tap into the pervasive anti-tax public mood by using populist rhetoric, these organizations serve corporate interests rather than groups of concerned neighbors. The author shows that direct democracy can, ironically, lead to diminished public involvement in government.
Smith looks at the key players, following the trail of money and power in three important initiatives: Proposition 13 in California (1978), Proposition 2 1/2 in Massachusetts (1980), and Amendment 1 in Colorado (1992). He provides a thorough history of tax limitation movements in America, showing how direct democracy can be manipulated to subvert the democratic process and frustrate the public good.

Book Description
Women's work is central to the social and economic aspirations of the countries of South Asia, yet planners and policy makers frequently overlook women's critical role in the areas of agriculture, industry, and services.
Women and Work in South Asia provides a rich perspective on a topic of growing importance, with essays from both Western and Asian contributors. The essays provide a cross-cultural perspective on women's work in South Asia which integrates macro- and micro-analysis. The contributors examine the inadequacies of official statistics and explore the cultural and socioeconomic position of women at work in the region through a range of case studies.
Contributors: Meena Acharya, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh, Joyce Aschenbrenner, Deipica Bagchi, Kalpana Bardhan, Sabine Felmy, Doranne Jacobson, Joan Mencher, Saraswati Raju, Joke Schrijvers.
Book Description
Lake Wobegon U.S.A. is the eagerly anticipated successor to News From Lake Wobegon (one of the bestselling spoken-word audio ever) and More News From Lake Wobegon. This collection contains 17 touching, exquisitely funny monologues from Garrison Keillor recorded during American Radio Company broadcasts from tour stops all over the country. The tales, says Keillor, are about "the luxury of rhubarb pie, the perils of prophecy, Florian and Myrtle's thrifty vacation, the vapor lights of Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility. . . ." They are also about joy, grief, dreams, luck, and mysteries—about the extraordinary moments of wonder that illuminate our ordinary lives.
Customer Reviews:
lake wobegon .......2007-06-12
Entertaining, lets the listener get out of town for a while.
Do not drive and listen. . ........2005-02-14
Made the mistake of listening to this on a drive to New Orleans. Usually takes two hours. However, when you have to pull the car over and laugh, it can take about three or four hours. Taking out the CD and arriving quicker was not an option - as long as there is a drive-through fast food joint close to the highway. The news from Lake Wobegon has become a letter from home over the past years, and, it will erase any damage you have had from your own family!!
I cannot imagine NOT having this in your collection. It is wonderful.
Full of Hearty Laughs and Poignant Moments.......2004-07-25
If you're not familliar with Garrison Keillor's stories of small-town, Midwestern life, check to see when his program is aired on your local NPR station. His radio program (called A Prarie Home Companion) is full of esoteric music, old fashioned comic sketches, and amusing interviews, but the real treats are his delightfull and insightfull Lake Wobegon yarns, which is what these tapes are full of. If I could give this 4 tape set 6 stars I would, but 5 will have to do. Included is a story about a Sunday school teacher's husband, who gets roped into managing the Christmas pagent at the last minute and must deal with debates over allowing live animals into the church, children with stage fright, and conspiracies to keep local Lutherans from getting into the Catholic church to watch the spectacle. Another favorite is The Six Labors of Father Wilmer, in which a battle between a priest and a parishoner leads to a cleric, in his pajamas, on a 20 foot ladder, at 3 am, trying to rid the church of the evil" of mecury lighting. Of course there's Sweet Corn, in which we learn about the secret aphrodisiac of the Midwest. Another good story is Blue Devils, in which we witness the progress of an overly competitive, all-girl's basketball team through the eyes of anxious parents, who try to make sense of sweet, blonde, little girls--who kiss mothers before joining the game, but are soon seen elbowing enemies to the floor and uttering words that have never been allowed in the house. All in all, there are 17 monologues and some music between stories...making about 5 hours of good, old-fashioned-but-liberal-minded entertainment. If you're looking for another good (probably better!) Keillor set, go for Life These Days. I guarentee you'll crack up.
Woe is Right.......2003-02-06
An old, tired theme. That is what this compilation delivers, and delivers and delivers.
While Mr. Keillor's show was moderately entertaining 15 years ago, it has not kept pace with time. Thus, the stories seem to be replayed on an old, stuck phonographic record, replayed over and over.
If you are a big time Keillor fan, you will probably find this work to be an enjoyable distraction while mixing your Metamucal. However, for anyone who can still think clearly, all these staid stories will just make you run for the can.
Great, just great........2002-08-30
This is one of the best works of Mr. Keillor and I read them all. Please keep writing it.

Southern Harmony.......2005-08-12
An interesting piece of history of the development of earlier American hymnology. Also interesting is, some of the wording is funny.
A brilliant piece of American musical history.......2002-04-15
Southern Harmony is probably the most popular hymnbook in history, having gone through editions in 1835, 1847, and 1854 as well as reprints in 1939, 1966, 1987, and 1993. After 1835, William Walker, its compiler, signed his name "William Walker, ASH"-- that is, Author of Southern Harmony. He was rightly proud of his achievement. The book includes the best of early-nineteenth-century American hymns, including many written by Walker himself. It was an influential source for many subsequent hymnals.
Southern Harmony is a shape-note hymnal, in which different notes have different shapes, enabling easy transposition between keys. The sopranos sing descants; the melodies are in the tenor voice.
And what melodies! The tunes (and lyrics) of this book will stun you with their plain-spoken power and beauty. Some (Amazing Grace, Rock of Ages) are familiar; some (Resignation --"My Shepherd Will Supply My Need"-- and Wondrous Love) are becoming better known; others have been arranged by contemporary musicians such as Alice Parker and Mack Wilberg. Many dozens of others are gems waiting to be mined.
The melodies in this book tend to display their Gaelic origins. Most are based on a pentatonic scale. Many are in minor keys, and many more are modal (especially Dorian, Phrygian, and Mixolydian). Harmonies are primitive but forceful.
This is an important part of our musical heritage. Anyone interested in church music will find Southern Harmony an inspiring collection that amply rewards hours of study.

I thoroughly enjoyed this quiz book.......1998-06-18
I consider myself to be a true cultural idiot, but after taking some of these quizzes I guess my brain is not as warped by TV, movies and music as I thought it was. In some of the categories I only got one answer right-especially the TV Spin-Off one. I highly recommend this book, it was a lot of fun taking the quizzes and a lot of fun going back in time and remembering some of the goofy shows, music and movies I used to think were cool!
Packed with trivia, and a lot of fun!.......1998-03-17
I enjoyed this book tremendously! Some puzzles are real stumpers, and as a movie & TV buff I was hooked. Hope a sequel comes out soon!
Wow---this one is impossible!!.......1998-02-04
This book is truly for the person who is really into TV, movie & music! I couldn't answer most of the questions!! Ex: "Name the Steven Speilberg directed film that features mashed potato replica of Devil Tower" Arghhh!

Fun guide, though not a reference.......2005-04-10
HarperPerennial produced this book in 1995, during the run of the show, so it's not all-inclusive of the show's storylines. It focuses mainly on trivia information about the show and does not contain any sort of episode guide or character guide. It does have Q&As with several of the stars, notable quotes of the characters, lush color photos in the center spread and the sanction of the head-honcho, Aaron Spelling.

Bad Code.......2006-03-18
It's really frustrating to try to learn from a programming book where the author's code doesn't work! None of the examples I tried would actually compile without my having to "fix" his code. In most cases that worked out ok, but in some cases I never really knew if my "fix" was a legitimate way to solve the problem or if it might cause problems later. Not a good way to learn!
I was robbed.......2005-11-20
This is the least useful book I have ever bought. It doesn't have anything useful and didn't answer me any questions I had. No wonder it was so cheap. I spent $9.95 for the book from Amozon, but I feel like I was robbed. I can give it to you for free if you ask for, but I would be guilty if I do, becuase it would waste your valuable time. Look at other's review and I was not the only victim, don't buy this one, it is 100% garbage.
Someone should have proofread this book.......2005-05-27
As an ASP developer who has not used Visual Studio, I found the first chapters of this book very insightful. The author does a good job explaining ASP.NET and its differences with ASP coding.
But if there's one thing that I can't stand in a programming book, it's a lack of proofreading of the code given in the book and poor programming practices displayed. This book, unfortunately, has a lot of that.
An example (from page 216):
Label6.Text = "Final Balance: $" + CalcBalance(Convert.ToInt32(TextBox1.Text),
Convert.ToInt32(TextBox2.Text) / 100,
Convert.ToInt32(TextBox3.Text),
Convert.ToInt16(DropDownList1.SelectedItem.Value)).ToString();
private string CalculateBalance(int Principal, double Rate, int Years, int Period)
{
double result;
double NumToBeRaised = (1 + Rate + Period);
result = Principal * System.Math.Pow(NumToBeRaised, (Years * Period));
return(result.ToString("C"));
}
This is to be a Compound Interest Calculator.
If you enter this code, as given in the book, it won't run. There are several errors:
Error 1) In the calling procedure, it's CalcBalance. In the function, it's CalculateBalance.
Error 2) If you fix that oversight and run it, your result is the same as the given Principal. Why? Because the function calls for a double Rate variable, and yet the calling routine converts the Rate to an int variable. If you change "Convert.ToInt32(TextBox2.Text) / 100" to "Convert.ToDouble(TextBox2.Text) / 100", the result is correct - sort of...
Error 3) The result will be displayed as "$$67,537.12" instead of "$67,537.12". The reason for the double-$ is that the function converts the result to a currency string, but then the calling procedure adds an extra "$".
Fixing these three errors will solve the problems, but obviously no one tried this code before the book was published.
And a couple of picky points just because I'm so irritated with something so glaring as these errors.
Error 4) Since the function returns as a string, why then convert the result to a string in the calling procedure?? It's unnecessary.
Error 5) The code uses default naming of objects instead of taking 1 minute to give some meaningful names, like txtPrincipal instead of TextBox1.
Two stars for having no thought to the simplest details.
Not Really Good for Beginners.......2005-04-22
I expect that this book will help me learn ASP.NET thru VB.NET. I am very frustrated, it didn't really help me to easily understand the simple thought of ASP.NET thru VB.NET. For beginners like me, I will not suggest this book. Much better to browse the web.
This book is just bad.......2005-02-26
I started this book with a background in both VB and classic ASP, with the goal of upgrading my knowledge to ASP.NET. I'll state that I think this book is just bad.
It seems that half the book presupposes that you have extensive knowledge of classic ASP, and the other half assumes that you've never used any sort of scripting language before. The examples are horribly simplistic to the point that they have absolutely no relation to modern web applications. But, you won't understand large parts of the book unless you have a background in programming.
The first two parts (six chapters) could actually be somewhat useful to a true beginner. They start slow and build up some very basic skills.
Part 2 is a little different. Chapter 7 on web forms is fairly decent, but could use to be longer. Chapter 8 on server controls is just poorly written. Chapter 9 on accessing date is AWFUL. It presupposes you have a fairly good background in traditional database access with something like ADO, so it's definitely not for beginners. For instance it compares the DataReader object to a read-only forward-only cursor, but if you don't have a background in data access you aren't going to understand how cursors work. This is right next to where he explains that the password key "Specifies the password to use to log into the SQL Server database." Yeah, DUH. Also, a bulk of the chapter is devoted to working with XML data but the chapter sets out to work with databases. For a 68 page chapter it conveys surprisingly little actual new information. No time is given to explaining how databases have traditionally been accessed and used in actual working applications. I just wanted to scream as I read it.
Chapter 10 on creating custom server controls and chapter 11 on creating web services are very brief introductions to some fairly advanced and complicated topics. They provide simplistic examples and then expect you might be able to actually use the knowledge you gained in the chapters. Yeah right.
Chapter 13 is aimed at beginners on deploying ASP.NET applications. Chapter 14 on tracing and debugging is actually not bad. (Not good either.)
Also the book is based on using Visual Studio .NET. I'll state that I have a bias against using IDEs for simple scripting, so I won't comment on appropriateness here. But be forewarned that three-quarters or more of the examples involve VS.NET.
