Book Description
The behavior of fiscal authorities and its interplay with budgetary institutions is a recent and increasingly important area of economic research, heightened by the move to single currency in Europe. This volume provides a systematic analysis of issues including the determinants of fiscal retrenchment strategies, the role of numerical and procedural rules, the composition of the adjustment, the (dis)similarity of fiscal behavior across countries, the interactions between fiscal and monetary authorities, and the long run factors shaping fiscal behavior and sustainability.

A long-awaited expose with brutally honest title.......2002-06-22
As a former rent-a-peon, I can attest to what Dr. Parker is talking about. Certainly the temporary-staffing industry does NOT want you to read this book.
I think this is a must-read for career counselors and those considering temping. The temp industry wants you to believe that the streets will be paved with gold after you sign on with them. Most of the temps interviewed for this book (and my temp coworkers) have similar views to mine. We've come to regard it as an easy way for companies to exploit workers and tell them they should be happy to have such a wonderful job. Just as Dr. Parker mentions, all too often temps literally are unable to afford searching for regular work. Time off usually means no pay, and there isn't a lot of money to spend on resume, proper interview attire, and the like.
Parker splendidly illustrates the disturbing increase in the proportion of the job market that consists of "contingent work" that has occurred during the past two decades. And he provides evidence that the temp-staffing industry is at least encouraging companies to use such staffing even more...
The downside to Flesh Peddlers is that it isn't for math phobes; there are a lot of numbers to go through and graphs would make it much easier to see what Parker is talking about. It also suffers from typographical errors throughout the text. Also recommended: "Just a Temp" by Kevin Daniel Henson. It is similar to "Flesh Peddlers," but actually is more reader-friendly.
Too academic, from a temp academic........1999-09-15
I found this book laborious, only slightly entertaining. Belongs in academia, but not necessarily for your reading pleasure on temping. If you liked this book, read Temporarily Yours by Wendy Perkins,an original, entertaining, provocative, self-published author/temp activist.

Clay Aiken, the undeniably talented American Idol runner up and self-proclaimed "nerdy, geeky, momma's boy" (and boy, does he love to talk about his momma), has written a strange hybrid of memoir, self-help and religious testimony--and in spite of it being so slight that it feels like it will float right out of your hands--he almost pulls it off. Learning to Sing is a book only his most rabid fans (and admittedly, there are millions of 'em) will be able to fully embrace. Anyone looking for American Idol dirt will have to go elsewhere, as Aiken always takes the high road, whether discussing his Idol experience (given surprisingly short shrift), the torment and damage done by the bullies of his youth, or his fractious, difficult relationship and ultimate estrangement from both his birth father and stepfather. When recounting the origin and progression of his true passion--teaching special needs children--his sincerity and dedication feels real and admirable. Towards the end of Learning to Sing, Aiken's writing teeters from subtly spiritual to zealously polemic, but surely there are worse things for young people (and some adults) to be exposed to than a wildly successful entertainer advising them to embrace their inner nerd, find and follow their passion and treat others with respect and kindness. We should all be so nerdy. --Terry Goodman
Book Description
“My mother prophesied years ago that my voice would take me places. She was certain that there was a reason I was able to sing. I am still discovering what that reason is, what it is that God wants to happen.”
–CLAY AIKEN, from Learning to Sing
When he was a kid singing in his church choir, Clay Aiken never dreamed of becoming a pop music star. His ambition was to be a teacher, maybe even a high school principal. But Clay’s mother was right, and the music that was Clay’s joy in life was destined to lead him to unexpected triumphs.
In Learning to Sing, Clay details what his astonishing success has meant to him. He writes from the heart about his life before and since his instant stardom on American Idol, how he has changed, and how he struggles to adapt to life in the public eye. He speaks candidly about his lonely childhood: the father who abandoned him, the school bullies who tormented him, the mother who taught him to be strong, and the friends and teachers who–more than they ever knew–kept him going. He describes his new high-profile life in Los Angeles– the awards shows, the free clothes, the unfortunate presence of avocado on all the food. More significant, he reveals what he has discovered from diving into the white-hot center of pop culture: what it takes for him to stay true to himself and remember the lessons he learned growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Clay shares his struggle to remain a man his mother can be proud of, and writes about the faith that sustains him today just as it did when he was an awkward, unpopular outsider. “I believe God has a direction for me. He did not give me this life just so I could buy a big house and an SUV. My job is to give back and to be a decent human being no matter how many people cheer my name.”
Clay’s friends–the old ones from North Carolina and the millions of new ones who love his voice–will hold this inspiring memoir as close to their hearts as they do his music. Learning to Sing reminds you that anything is possible. Like a perfect song, it will send your spirit soaring.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-07-07
This is a great book that actually is not about singing. It is about his life in NC and how he has made the hard times in his life into positive experiences. If you need a little inspiration or just want to know more about this amazing guy, read this book!
enjoyable.......2007-01-15
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was written quite well and the large letters was easy to read.
A very well written book !!.......2007-01-09
I didn't watch American Idol, therefore, I had no idea who Clay Aiken was until I heard his singing on radio. I enjoyed his songs so much that I bought his CD. Recently, I learned about this book, decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. This is a biography that is very real and non-intimidating. Clay Aiken didn't have an easy childhood and yet he was able to recount it with such honesty and sense of humor. I also like the fact that although he is young, he is all serious about the importance of being a good person and making a difference. I have the CD version of this book, my 11 year-old daughter and I listened to it in the car and we both enjoy it tremendously. I highly recommend it.
At Times I Thought I Was Reading My Own Story.......2007-01-05
I never thought a book could bring me to tears like this one did. I was looking forward to reading it just curious about the man behind this wonderful voice. His story tells me that his past unfavorable experiences help balance the avalanche of love and adoration pouring out to him now. I think about how intense my feelings have become and then see footage of his Claymates and have to wonder if he becomes overwhelmed. Is there such a thing as too much love for one person?
The sad part is there will be those who are jealous of it and feel the need to trample on this deserved success. While reading this book you begin to feel Clay is right there in the room with you and certainly don't want the book to end because that means he's leaving. He is by no means invisible. If walking on water or running through fire would guarantee a weekend with Clay I would start practicing right now. That officially graduates me from Claymate to Claymaniac. I feel certain this is just the beginning for Clay and want to thank the cosmic forces that brought this soaring positively infectious spirit to our hearts. I try not to question the pure excitement, the euphoria, but just wallow in the wonderfulness of it all. If I wrote our fan fiction the title would be, `For However Long It Last.' Its times like this when it's good to be alive. Thank you Clay for not being afraid... to sing!
reality check.......2006-11-23
I supposed if I'd had known Clay at his youth, I'd probably think he was annoying. It kind of teaches you to give people the benefit of the doubt. Don't judge a book by its cover, basically. Get to know the person inside. For someone with a rough childhood he sure turned out pretty well. I'm sure having faith in God has alot to do with it. He's the kind of person everyone needs in their lives.

Book Description
Arthur Koestler claimed that the sense of humor of the Japanese was like "weak, mint-flavoured tea." Was he right? Are funny bones not part of their anatomy? Is laughter something preferably hidden behind one's hand?
In this eloquent and often deliciously amusing book, Howard Hibbett sets out to prove that, in its own way, Japanese humor is just as robust and varied as other people's. Jokes themselves are notoriously resistant to translation, but in the hands of a subtle interpreter such as Hibbett, funny stories and even puns clear the language barrier in great style. If anything, as E. B. White said of his own works in translation, they may at times "lose something in the original."
Hibbett's study begins in the mists of legend, when the Sun Goddess, sulking in a cave, is supposed to have been lured out by the laughter of lesser gods, assembled to watch a "striptease" performed by another goddess. Echoes of that bawdy laughter, we learn, can still be heard through the ensuing centuries, under the accumulation of more sophisticated wit. This, he shows us, is true not only of the age of frivolity that flowered in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the pleasure quarters of the great cities, but of later periods when a stricter public moral code was imposed from above and laughter was thought unseemly, with people resorting to the private consolation of dirty or irreverent jokes. For a while, in the first half of the twentieth century, it appeared that the Japanese were in danger of losing their sense of humor altogether, especially in literature. But not even war and Westernized intellectuals could entirely suppress the sense of fun that reemerged! , alive and well, in postwar vaudeville and films and comic books. And there Hibbett's narrative ends, as it began -- with a comic strip. Any number of solemn books have been written about "the Japanese character," which ultimately is the subject of his book as well. But here at last is one that, while it informs, never fails to entertain.

After months of tighter-than-CIA secrecy, here is the exclusive inside story of the TV smash Survivor. Its creator, Mark Burnett, calls the show "Gilligan's Island meets Lord of the Flies meets Ten Little Indians meets The Real World," but you knew that. What's new about this book is the view from the other side of the lens. While the contestants gobbled wriggling three-inch beetles and savaged each other, Burnett and company were feverishly running the show and writing this tell-all account. It gives you a better feel than TV can for the natural setting: pristine beaches infested with skin-burrowing bugs that scarred "coquette" Colleen for life; Malaysian field rats attracted by the survivors' food and crawling over them all night; six-foot, yellow-and-black-banded sea kraits (snakes) devouring the rats; 300-pound pythons reeking of rotting meat, poised to drop from trees and eat people.
Except for the crew's hands-down favorite, U.S. Air Force survival trainer Gretchen ("She was wholesome, she was a survivalist, she looked great in a bathing suit"), most of the contestants were nice as pythons. Laid-back Gervase said, "Nothing's dumber than a woman, except maybe a cow," amusing "alpha male" Joel and enraging Jenna, Colleen, and Gretchen (IQ 142). Greg, who stank more than others because he slept in the jungle and got more bug bites, infuriated show host Jeff Probst. Despite "long nights cuddling with Colleen," Greg betrayed her to flirt with the aptly named winner, Rich. "It's like a kitten you find," Greg says of Colleen. "You give it a name, like Fluffy ... you're starving. So you look right in the kitten's eyes and break its neck. Nothing personal." The authors compare gay Rich and homophobe Rudy to the Odd Couple, and Dirk and Sean to "a pair of Malaysian field rats trying to stand up to a yellow-banded krait. The krait, of course was Susan."
The Pagong tribe was young, strong, lazy, and quarrelsome--"MTV's Beach House." The Tagi were older, but a far better team, and so more successful. And the most consistent, cynical, and adaptive contestant won.
Survivor is not just great gossip; it's the most fascinating and massively popular psychology experiment ever conducted. --Tim Appelo

Survivor; a "novel" idea.......2005-02-17
First of all, don't bother purchasing this book until you have seen the series "Survivor: Borneo", because, basically, the book won't have the same meaning to those who have yet to see the series on which it is based (What are you waiting for? Go watch it!). For those who have seen "Borneo", this is an ideal way to relive the moments of Pulau Tiga seen from an entirely different perspective; that of the producer, Mark Burnett. Burnett describes the activities of island life as they occured on the island, making this a descriptive insight into the personalities and personas of each of the 16 castaways as pictured by Burnett. He covers the backround of each "character" by actually attempting to see things from that survivor's point of view. The description of many of the things not shown on TV is quite interesting (to say the least), with backround information provided on the technicalities of the shoot and island living (including not only the cast, but the crew as well). I was extremely disappointed by the rather abrupt end to book, and that the final tribal council, one of the most pivotal moments of the entire series, was so swiftly covered, without even remarking on Sue's "Rat & Snake" speech (Oh good God, you just gotta see it!) or the other jury members' votes. (Now I'm told that all this comes in Burnett's next book, the Survival Guide for the Autrailian Outback. What in God's name is the point of that?). The interview with the million-dollar winner (the sole suvivor) is interesting, but could hardly be called "in-depth". The most important thing about this book, though, is Burnett's analysis of each of the castaway's mentality and strategies, and, like me, those of you who have seen the show and have appreciated the castaways' outer values will be most intrigued by the psychology of their mentality Burnett discusses here. This book is an absolute must-have for any Survivor fans (and any Colleen Haskell fans like me!), but will still be better appreciated by those who are actually familiar with the entire "Borneo" thing.
Great book for a survivor fan!.......2004-04-05
I loved this book. I bought it used off of Borders and had my doubts about it. But it came through. I was written by Mark Burnett while he was on the island as the filming progressed. Mark wrote about the game itself along with insights to what happens behind the scenes. Although the sotry is basically a recap of the show, it also give more. I learned many things like- the production crew and the castways know each other by names and intermingle and also I learned more about each castaway and his or her ideas about the game going into it and afterwards. I totally recommend this book for any fans (and even non-fans!)
A little thin on excitement.......2002-11-21
I thought this book would be a bit spicier than what can go on TV, but I found details and stories to be a bit thin. It was as though the book was an after-thought to the hit show; another piece of merchandise not quite up to snuff. Not a bad book, but I think it could have been better.
Terribly bland retelling of my favorite obsession.......2002-04-16
Well, it sure is obvious, after reading the Survivor: Ultimate Game book, that Mark Burnett has his favorites. For the Colleen, Kelly, Jenna, Gervase fans out there, ignore this book. It seems to dwell mostly on the strange personalities of Sue Hawk, Gretchen Cordy, Greg Buis and Stacey Stillman. Not who I would have picked to write a book about. The troublesome thing about this book is that the same parts seem to be rehashed over and over again, the characters are painted in a light I would have never pictured (nor were they edited that way in the original series) and frankly, the book has about ZERO dialogue, because it was all Mark Burnett chatting about the Survivors.
I'm a hardcore survivor junkie and I was disappointed with this. If you're looking for tidbits on the 1st season, get the DVD. I found it alot more entertaining than the book, and I'm a voracious reader.
Not Too Much Here........2002-02-12
This book is supposedly based upon Mark Burnett's journal of his forty days behind the scenes of the first SURVIVOR. There isn't a whole lot of new information here and there are many typos. Everything in the book is filtered through the mind of Burnett, which has positive and negatives. Positive: readers are given insight into how Burnett felt about the players of the game (he had several favorites and there were a few people he didn't like at all) and it's interesting to see how those feelings may have influenced parts of the show. Negative: much of what Burnett tells is old news, it's as though he was trying to reach a different audience with the book than he was with the show and therefore tried not to offend too many people. The book is simple to read (I flew through it in a day) and fairly entertaining. Fans of the show may enjoy it and it makes a good primer for anyone who has never seen the show.
