Book Description
This study provides an in-depth analysis of the external debt problem of a country--Mexico--that allegedly faces a "debt overhang," which inhibits long-term growth-oriented investment. Issues facing the debtor nation and its commercial bank creditors are simultaneously examined in order to move closer towards an understanding of the situation of debt-distressed developing countries. The need to address these issues on a case-by-case basis is emphasized, opposed to a global approach to solving the debt crisis presently recommended by some. Not only does this work provide a survey of the theoretical literature on the international debt crisis it also provides a way of incorporating simultaneously the concerns of the opposing sides--debtor nations and creditor banks. It will be of interest to economists and policy-makers in international finance and trade and development economics.

Book Description
This edition combines the complete 21st Century Guitar Method 1 with its correlated workbook, Guitar Theory 1, and 5 complete songs from Guitar Song Trax 1. A CD containing all the music examples and complete instruction is included.
Customer Reviews:
This is the guitar method of choice for me.......2007-08-03
I have used Alfred -in fact, I was taught using that method. But I really love this series by Aaron Stang. He is very methodical. The songs are fun and I love the CD. It's so much easier to learn when you can hear what you're trying to do and then copy it! My students really thrive in this series.
I also love that he teaches things like power chords and scales. These are things I never got from the other method books and they are such an important part of what guitar is all about. Yes, every student should learn to read notation - and the book certainly teaches that, but every student also needs to know how the guitar is used in music today. That means power chords and movable chords, scales and riffs.
This book/series covers it all.
A great book.......2005-09-06
I've been using this book for the last three weeks and although I'm not far into it, I've found it very helpful and easy to understand. The CD really helps and the instructions are very clear.

Book Description
The rampant illnesses of our society--including the disintegration of the family, the degradation of the environment, unlimited commercialism, and unrelenting stress--are familiar to us all. For the first time, Stephen Bertman attempts to explain these disparate, overwhelmingly negative phenomena with a single, unifying principle: that the accelerated pace of American society is eroding the essence of our most fundamental values. In 1970, Alvin Toffler identified a psycho-biological disease he called "future shock" caused by "too much change in too short a time." Now Bertman daringly diagnoses an even more serious condition, "hyperculture," a chronic warping of morals and ethics caused by America's addiction to speed. The treatment, he argues in this book, will require nothing less than a drastic slowdown--we must reassert control over the technologies that now dominate us in order to insure a humane future for our children and ourselves. We live, according to Bertman, in a society ruled by the "power of now," a power that gives us instant gratification even as it demands our instantaneous obedience. As a result, we have adapted our lives and values to match the speed-of-light electronic technologies that surround us. But, in so doing, we have paid a high price in spirit and mind. Cut off from the wisdom of the past and too rushed to consider the consequences of our actions, we are caught up in a culture of sensationalism and transience in which the very definitions of personal identity and democracy are being transformed. Hyperculture dares to suggest that the cure for our condition lies not in an "information superhighway" or "third wave information revolution," but in the radical and painful process of decelerating our lives enough to reclaim them. It is a daunting challenge, to be sure, but one on which our happiness and even our survival depend.
Customer Reviews:
This book IS required reading for all Americans........1999-10-11
Bertman gives us a rare blend of deep historical understanding and clarity of view of our own times. Page after page, recognition chimes go off. He has said what we have all felt in our moments of doubt about the breakneck speed of our own lives and the lives of our neighbors. I am recommending this book to all my friends and acquaintances who have any questions at all about why it is we have so much more stuff and so little satisfaction. People all over the country, who are struggling in so many ways to cope or drop out, should find help in this book.
The power of now is the current disease which afflicts us........1998-10-23
Dr. Stephen Bertman, a Classicist, from the University of Windsor in Canada has shone light upon the affliction of modern culture. The speed at which we travel through our daily lives is exposed for what it is able to do. The centripital force that rips at the very fabric of society is examined from the micro to the macro and it is quite alarming to see that what we take for granted is actually part of what damages us. Technology moves faster and faster which pushes the human ability to cope with life to the limits. Culture as we know it is being changed before our eyes and it moves so quickly that we do not have time to adapt. The simplicity of a family gathering is no longer something that the power of now allows us to enjoy, but it pushes us to only live in a superficial realm. At the end there are some sound suggestions to what one is able to do to control the speed at which one travels through daily life. A must read if you are serious about learning how to navigate this constantly changing world. I have not only read the book, but have had the good experience of being a past student of this professor. He lives what he imparts in the book and in the lecture hall. The heights that I have aspired to have been in part due to his teachings. Currently I am working on a PhD in Classics.

Customer Reviews:
It is a fun book!.......1999-09-01
It is a fun book! I have seen the excellent original La Femme Nikita and the pathetic US remade. I love the idea that the book drew a nice comparison between the production/directors/leading actresses of the two movies and TV series. It juxtaposed them with one another providing solid background on how did the whole thing get evolved from a French movie that marginally made it in the US box office to an amazing TV hit series. The episode guide was very precise and gave the reader a good idea of the narrative. More, The Idiot's Guide To Section One is HILARIOUS!! If you are a fan of the TV series, you will find it real handy to have this book when you are in the mood to do some reading about the series or Peta Wilson. One drawback is that there are very few pictures of Peta and they are in black and white. (Just a thought: if the episodes of the La Femme Nikita could be in released in tapes like X-File did, it would be great. Also, I think this series would be even a bigger success, if it could be run on the major network.)
Only get the book if you are a new person to the show!.......1999-08-25
I think you should only get this book if you have not been watching the show since the start of it. A hard core fan would know all of the stuff that is in it. There are not alot of pictures and the pictures that are there are all in b/w.
Nothing New.......1999-08-22
After reading what was being said about the book on this page. I have went out to buy the book, but didn't after looking over the book. I haven't read any backstage gossip, nor anything about a realtionship between Peta and Matthew. Maybe there is another book with the backstage information as well as the information about Peta and Matthew.
The book didn't have anything in it that I haven't read online. I was hoping that it was a book that really lets us get to know the characters behind the masks if you know what I mean. This book is for newcomers that haven't yet seen LFN. The fans that are now starting to see season 1.
Hokey, Crappy photos.......1999-07-02
This book is great for a guide that takes you 3/4 of the way through the second season, but any fan could have written it. The front cover is also pretty packaging... Inside doesn't look like much. There are few images, and few insights.
It's a GREAT book!.......1999-06-18
This book was great! It offered a lot of info. and I enjoyed a whole lot! Definately worth reading! This show is sooo great I'm suprised there aren't more books! It's wonderful!

Customer Reviews:
A book from a REAL trader.......2006-10-17
What I really liked most about this book is that it was written by someone who actually trades for a living instead of a vendor who makes his living off selling courses, classes, and books. Gary Smith took a $2,000 account which he struggled with for 19 years to a $700,000 account after reading hundreds of trading books. How did he do this? By finally quitting trying to go for the big when and focused on gaining money each month. He really made the big money at first by trading S&P futures then when he got in the 6 figure range he switched to mutual funds only because he can not deal with the volitilitu of individual stocks. This book is like a modern day version of Nicolas Darvas's "How I made $2,000,000" it is the true story of how an individual broke the trading code. Here are my key learnings:
1. Trade momentum get in when the market moves up and stay in while it continues to go up, run for your life at the first sign of it dropping.
2. Live and breath the market with the help of CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, magazines, books, and some good news letters,
3. Trade what works for you, whether it be stocks, options, futures, etc.
4. Avoid vendorland in the investment world and focus on educating yourself.
5. The stock market has made 40% of its historical gain from November and December. The best days to trade are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
6. Position trading is better than day trading.(Staying in over night or the week end).
7. Agonize over your losses and learn from them.
8. Watch for divergences in the S&P, NasdaQ, and Dow, and buy when one runs up past the others.
9. THE MARKET TELLS IT'S OWN STORY BEST.Watch buying momentum.
He has an excellent reading list at the back of the book that will enrich you. I also recommend reading Alexander Elders "Trading for a living" and Van Tharps "Trade your way to Financial Freedom" for a complete picture on how to really trade for a living.
Refreshing honesty with no hype.......2006-07-25
This was one of the first books I bought on trading while I was doing it part time. I was struck by all of the parallels between what he had experienced and what I was experiencing in my trading.
I enjoyed his breezy no nonsense style of writing and the fact that he delivers what he promises, how HE trades for a living. I emphasize HE because if you are a trader It is doubtful that you will trade like him...mutual funds with no technical analysis.
Having said that I did benefit from some of his techniques and discovered a few sentiment indicators that I had not used previously.
I would recommend this book as a complement to a good T.A book like Tom O'Briens Timing The Trade. Together you should have most of your bases covered.
Gary Smith Is the Real Deal.......2006-02-26
I first learned about Gary Smith on the floor of the CBOT, where he was something of a living legend to speculators there. This man is the real deal. Yes, he actually knows how to trade, unlike the myriad of charlatans in the trading book business. One of the most important points to emanate from Smith's book is the fact that the man went through years of suffering as he attempted to reach his goal. Trading is not something you can master in a few months. Many people quit lucrative jobs thinking they are going to be the next Jesse Livermore or Nicholas Darvas. Folks, it's not going to happen unless you are prepared to study, work hard and take a series of blows to your trading account and your ego.
It takes years to be a successful off the floor trader/speculator. Gary's book makes a number of excellent points, one of them being that you cannot successfully trade the grains, the softs and the meats off the floor. If you want to be a successful off the floor trader, you must find some type of financial derivative to trade.
Gary writes in rich detail about the various indicators that help him make successful trades. He also has an excellent appendix that lists his favorite books on trading. This is one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of trading. It is a classic in the same league as Reminiscences of a Stock Operator and How I Made a Million Dollars in the Stock Market. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
disjointed, not methodical at all.......2006-01-30
Frankly, I'm a bit surprised over the reviews favoring this book. Yes, it does appear written by someone knowledgeable about the markets; yes, he does reveal *his* methods, but therein lies the problem. What, exactly, are his methods? They are a disjointed mix of different techniques that *he* subjectively uses without really providing a methodical framework for how you can implement those same methods. The book is somewhat like a fellow rambling on and on sitting next to you on a bus, without really showing you HOW to do what he does. Believe me, I picked up the book really *wanting* to believe it could help me and making every effort to make the book *work*. But in the end, I put it back on the bookshelf along with all the other hocum that's out there on trading. Definitely not worth the $40.00 it lists for.
Honest book!.......2005-10-30
Very good book, provides very good concepts on trading. Its biggest virtue is to be honest.
This book could be used as an entry point to Contrarian thinking to later jump to Victor Niederhoffer's books which are more complex.
